On The Other Hand, When Our Mind Is Restless And Upset, The Most Comfortable Physical Facilities Do Not Make Us Happy.

If You Serve Others As Fully As You Can, What You Do Will Be A Source Of Inner Joy.

As A Buddhist, I View Death As A Normal Process, A Reality That I Accept Will Occur As Long As I Remain In This Earthly Existence. Knowing That I Cannot Escape It, I See No Point In Worrying About It. I Tend To Think Of Death As Being Like Changing Your Clothes When They Are Old And Worn Out, Rather Than As Some Final End. Yet Death Is Unpredictable: We Do Not Know When Or How It Will Take Place. So It Is Only Sensible To Take Certain Precautions Before It Actually Happens.

To Be Extremely Self-centred, Only Interested In Your Own Satisfaction, Always Brings Negative Consequences In The Long Run.

I Must Have Dialogue With The Chinese Government, And Dialogue Requires Compromise. Therefore, I'm Speaking For Genuine Self-rule, Not For Independence.

When We Talk About Global Crisis, Or A Crisis Of Humanity, We Cannot Blame A Few Politicians, A Few Fanatics, Or A Few Troublemakers. The Whole Of Humanity Has A Responsibility Because It Is Our Business, Human Business. I Call This A Sense Of Universal Responsibility. That Is A Crucial Point.

You Must Not Procrastinate. Rather, You Should Make Preparations So That Even If You Did Die Tonight, You Would Have No Regrets. If You Develop An Appreciation For The Uncertainty And Imminence Of Death, Your Sense Of The Importance Of Using Your Time Wisely Will Get Stronger And Stronger.

It Is... Very Helpful To Think Of Adversity Not So Much As A Threat To Our Peace Of Mind But Rather As The Very Means By Which Patience Is Attained.

The Nature Of Our Motivation Determines The Character Of Our Work.

We Must Each Lead A Way Of Life With Self-awareness And Compassion, To Do As Much As We Can. Then, Whatever Happens We Will Have No Regrets.

Depression Seems To Be Related To Fear, Anger And Frustration. When You're In A Bad Mood, Even If You Meet With Your Friends, You Don't Take Pleasure In Their Company. But When You're In A Good Mood, Even If Things Go Wrong, You Can Cope With Them Without Difficulty. This Is Why Putting Yourself In A Good Mood, Making A Point Of Developing A Sense Of Loving Kindness Gives You Greater Inner Strength.

If We Make Consistent Effort, Based On Proper Education, We Can Change The World.

A Thousand Candles Can Be Lit From One Candle, However The Life Of The Original Candle Is Not Shortened In The Least.

Even Without A Religion, We Can Become A Good Human Being.

Genuine Human Friendship Is On The Basis Of Human Affection, Irrespective Of Your Position. Therefore, The More You Show Concern About The Welfare And Rights Of Others, The More You Are A Genuine Friend. The More You Remain Open And Sincere, Then Ultimately More Benefits Will Come To You. If You Forget Or Do Not Bother About Others, Then Eventually You Will Lose Your Own Benefit.

Misunderstanding May Arise By Confusing The Buddhist And Scientific Definitions Of Death. Within The Scientific System You Spoke Quite Validly Of The Death Of The Brain And The Death Of Heart. Different Parts Of The Body Can Die Separately. However, In The Buddhist System, The Word Death Is Not Used In That Way. You'd Never Speak Of The Death Of A Particular Part Of The Body, But Rather Of The Death Of An Entire Person. When People Say That A Certain Person Died, We Don't Ask, "well, Which Part Died?"

Buddha Was Speaking About Reality. Reality May Be One, In Its Deepest Essence, But Buddha Also Stated That All Propositions About Reality Are Only Contingent.

One Of The Expressions Of Western Over-reliance On Technology Can Be Seen In The Lack Of Patience In Industrial Society. When You Deal With Technology, Everything Happens At The Touch Of A Button. This Conditions You To Become So Impatient That When You Have An Emotional Or Personal Crisis, You Don't Allow Time For The Solution To Take Effect. This Leads To All Sorts Of Rash Responses, Like Quarrels, Fights And So On.

The Ultimate Source Of My Mental Happiness Is My Peace Of Mind. Nothing Can Destroy This Except My Own Anger.

The Compassion We Feel Normally Is Biased And Mixed With Attachment. Genuine Compassion Flows Towards All Living Beings, Particularly Your Enemies. If I Try To Develop Compassion Towards My Enemy, It May Not Benefit Him Directly, He May Not Even Be Aware Of It. But It Will Immediately Benefit Me By Calming My Mind. On The Other Hand, If I Dwell On How Awful Everything Is, I Immediately Lose My Peace Of Mind.

It's Best Not To Get Too Excited Or Too Depressed By The Ups And Downs Of Life.

When We Face Problems Or Disagreements Today, We Have To Arrive At Solutions Through Dialogue. Dialogue Is The Only Appropriate Method. One-sided Victory Is No Longer Acceptable. We Must Work To Resolve Conflicts In A Spirit Of Reconciliation And Always Keep In Mind The Interests Of Others.

The More We Think Of Others, The Happier We Are. The More We Think Of Ourselves, The More Suffering We Feel.

Whether One Believes In A Religion Or Not, And Whether One Believes In Rebirth Or Not, There Isn't Anyone Who Doesn't Appreciate Kindness And Compassion.

Everyone Wants A Happy Life Without Difficulties Or Suffering. We Create Many Of The Problems We Face. No One Intentionally Creates Problems, But We Tend To Be Slaves To Powerful Emotions Like Anger, Hatred And Attachment That Are Based On Misconceived Projections About People And Things. We Need To Find Ways Of Reducing These Emotions By Eliminating The Ignorance That Underlies Them And Applying Opposing Forces.

The Deep Root Of Failure In Our Lives Is To Think, 'oh How Useless And Powerless I Am.' It Is Essential To Think Strongly And Forcefully, 'i Can Do It,' Without Boasting Or Fretting.

Not Only Can I Not Recall My Experiences In My Previous Lives, Sometimes I Can't Even Remember What I Did Yesterday.

Feelings Of Anger, Bitterness, And Hate Are Negative. If I Kept Those Inside Me, They Would Spoil My Body And My Health. The Are Of No Use.

If An Individual Has A Calm State Of Mind, That Person's Attitudes And Views Will Be Calm And Tranquil Even In The Presence Of Great Agitation.

Happiness Cannot Come From Hatred Or Anger. Nobody Can Say, 'today I Am Happy Because This Morning I Was Angry.' On The Contrary, People Feel Uneasy And Sad And Say, 'today I Am Not Very Happy, Because I Lost My Temper This Morning.'

Each One Of Us Is Responsible For The Whole Of Humankind. We Need To Think Of Each Other Really As Brothers And Sisters And To Be Concerned For Each Other’s Welfare. Rather Than Working Solely To Acquire Wealth, We Need To Do Something Meaningful, Something Directed Seriously Towards The Welfare Of Humanity As A Whole.

To Defy The Authority Of Empirical Evidence Is To Disqualify Oneself As Someone Worthy Of Critical Engagement In A Dialogue.

Only The Development Of Compassion And Understanding For Others Can Bring Us The Tranquility And Happiness We All Seek.

Happiness Doesn't Always Come From A Pursuit. Sometimes It Comes When We Least Expect It.

Buddhism Does Not Accept A Theory Of God, Or A Creator. According To Buddhism, One's Own Actions Are The Creator, Ultimately. Some People Say That, From A Certain Angle, Buddhism Is Not A Religion But Rather A Science Of Mind.

The Point Of Life Is Happiness.

We Must Realize That It Is Best To Focus On Our Oneness, To Re Emphasize What Is The Same About Each Of Us Rather Than Dwell On What Is Different.

We Are Beset By Problems And If We Look For Their Source, We Find They Arise Because Of Our Selfishness, Because We Tend To Pursue Our Own Interests At The Expense Of Others. Our Various Religious Traditions Exist To Help Us Reduce These Problems. They All Teach Ways To Overcome Suffering Through Cultivating Love And Compassion, Tolerance, Patience And Contentment.

Different People Describe Me In A Different Ways. Some Describe Me As The Living Buddha. Nonsense. Some Describe Me As 'god-king.' Nonsense. Some Consider Me As A Demon Or A Wolf In Buddhist Robes. That Also, I Think Nonsense.

Let Us Have That Kind Of Effort From All, Except Those Child Or Handicapped Or Too Old. But The Many People, They Sort Of Have The Opportunity To Create Trouble Or To Create A Good Thing, Now Should Think More Seriously, Should Not Indulge Any Work To Create More Problems.

A Human Being Isn't Meant To Be Some Kind Of Machine Designed Only For Production. No. Human Life Isn't Just For Work.

I Never Dreamt, In My Dream, I'm Dalai Lama.

I Always Emphasize That It Is Much Safer And Better To Keep One's Own Religious Faith. The Other Major Religions Are Thousands Of Years Old And Have Long Traditions.

For The Moment A Lot Of Attention Is Given To Economic Concerns, And These Problems At Hand Easily Eclipse All Others. But The Remedies Proposed For These Problems All Come Out Of Outmoded Ways Of Thinking... The Remedy? Compassion. The Logical Feeling That We Find In Ourselves If We Search Deeply Enough That Has To Be Exercised Toward All Other Living Creatures.

We Can Make This A More Peaceful Century If We Cherish Non-violence And Concern For Others’ Well-being. It Is Possible. If The Individual Is Happier, His Or Her Family Is Happier; If Families Are Happy, Neighborhoods And Nations Will Be Happy. By Transforming Ourselves We Can Change Our Human Way Of Life And Make This A Century Of Compassion.

Concern For Others

So The First Step In Seeking Happiness Is Learning. We First Have To Learn How Negative Emotions And Behaviors Are Harmful To Us And How Positive Emotions Are Helpful.

Look At Children... If They Feel Angry With Someone, They Express It, And Then It Is Finished. They Can Still Play With That Person The Following Day.

Good Human Qualities-honesty, Sincerity, A Good Heart-cannot Be Bought With Money, Nor Can They Be Produced My Machines, But Only By The Mind Itself. We Can Call This The Inner Light, Or God's Blessing, Or Human Qualitity. This Is The Essence Of Mankind.

It's Not Enough To Be Compassionate. You Must Act.

Our Purpose In Life Is To Be Happy. From The Very Core Of Our Being, We Simply Desire Contentment.

I Truly Believe That Compassion Provides The Basis Of Human Survival.

Peace In The World Depends On Peace In The Hearts Of Individuals; This Depends On Each Of Us Practising Ethics By Disciplining Our Negative Thoughts And Emotions, And Developing Basic Spiritual Qualities.

What Is My Religion? Simple. Kindness.

Developing Love And Compassion And Reducing Anger And Spite Is A Universal Activity Which Requires No Faith In Any Religion Whatsoever

Happiness Mainly Comes From Our Own Attitude, Rather Than From External Factors.

One Thing I Want To Make Clear, As Far As My Own Rebirth Is Concerned, The Final Authority Is Myself And No One Else, And Obviously Not China's Communists.

Self-discipline, Although Difficult, And Not Always Easy While Combating Negative Emotions, Should Be A Defensive Measure. At Least We Will Be Able To Prevent The Advent Of Negative Conduct Dominated By Negative Emotion. That Is 'shila', Or Moral Ethics. Once We Develop This By Familiarizing Ourselves With It, Along With Mindfulness And Conscientiousness, Eventually That Pattern And Way Of Life Will Become A Part Of Our Own Life.

I Often Tease Young People About Their Concern For How They Look; More Important Is Inner Beauty - Compassion, Affection And Respect.

When You Think Everything Is Someone Else's Fault, You Will Suffer A Lot. When You Realize That Everything Springs Only From Yourself, You Will Learn Both Peace And Joy.

Action For Happiness Encourages Each Of Us To Live More Compassionately And Put The Happiness Of Others At The Centre Of Our Lives. This Is The Path To Lasting Peace And Happiness

An Ethical Act Is One Which Does Not Harm Others' Experience Or Expectation Of Happiness.

Inner Darkness, Which We Call Ignorance, Is The Root Of Suffering. The More Inner Light That Comes, The More Darkness Will Diminish. This Is The Only Way To Achieve Salvation Or Nirvana.

Everybody Wants A Happy Life And A Peaceful Mind, But We Have To Produce Peace Of Mind Through Our Own Practice.

Anything That Contradicts Experience And Logic Should Be Abandoned.

So Long As We Are Under The Control Of Disturbing Emotions, Real Happiness Is Hard To Find.

In Order To Be Happy We Must First Possess Inner Contentment; And Inner Contentment Doesn't Come From Having All We Want; But Rather From Wanting And Appreciating Being Grateful For All We Have.

I Pray For A More Friendly, More Caring, And More Understanding Human Family On This Planet. To All Who Dislike Suffering, Who Cherish Lasting Happiness, This Is My Heartfelt Appeal.

Any Issue, Including Political, Economic And Religious Activities Human Beings Pursue In This World, Should Be Fully Understood Before We Pass Our Judgement. Therefore, It Is Very Important To Know The Causes. Whatever The Issue, We Should Be Able To See The Complete Picture. This Will Enable Us To Comprehend The Whole Story.

A Genuine Smile Touches Something Fundamental In Us: Our Natural Appreciation Of Kindness.

Compassion Instills A Sense Of Calm, Inner Strength, And A Deep Confidence And Satisfaction

If You Can, Help Others; If You Cannot Do That, At Least Do Not Harm Them.

However Capable And Skillful An Individual May Be, Left Alone, He Or She Will Not Survive. When We Are Sick Or Very Young Or Very Old, We Must Depend On The Support Of Others. There Is No Significant Division Between Us And Other People, Because Our Basic Natures Are The Same. If We Wish To Ensure Everyone's Peace And Happiness, We Need To Cultivate A Healthy Respect For The Diversity Of Our Peoples And Cultures, Founded On An Understanding Of This Fundamental Sameness Of All Human Beings.

Peace Has A Great Deal To Do With Warm-heartednes S And Respect For The Lives Of Others, Avoiding Doing Them Harm And Regarding Their Lives As Being As Precious As Our Own. If, On That Basis, We Can Also Be Of Help To Others, So Much The Better.

No Matter What Part Of The World We Come From, We Are All Basically The Same Human Beings. We All Seek Happiness And Try To Avoid Suffering. We Have The Same Basic Human Needs And Concerns. All Of Us Human Beings Want Freedom And The Right To Determine Our Own Destiny As Individuals And As Peoples. That Is Human Nature.

I Believe Compassion To Be One Of The Few Things We Can Practice That Will Bring Immediate And Long-term Happiness To Our Lives.

You Make Me Happy

In My Childhood, And Particularly When I Take The Responsibility, I Already Have Sort Of Keen Desire, We Must Change Our System. These Days, In Our Materialistic Culture, Many People Are Led To Believe That Money Is The Ultimate Source Of Happiness. Consequently, When They Don’t Have Enough Of It They Feel Let Down. I Believe That Each Individual Should Embark Upon A Spiritual Path That Is Best Suited To His Or Her Mental Disposition, Natural Inclination, Temperament, Belief, Family And Cultural Background.

There Is No Denying That Consideration Of Others Is Worthwhile And That Our Happiness Is Inextricably Bound Up With The Happiness Of Others. There Is No Denying That If Society Suffers, We Ourselves Suffer, And The More Our Hearts And Minds Are Afflicted With Ill-will, The More Miserable We Become. We Can Reject Religion, Ideology, Received Wisdom, But We Cannot Escape The Need For Love And Compassion.
