Basically, The Buddhist Attitude Is That You Should Not Accept Certain Things Through Sheer Faith. And For That You Need A Skeptical Attitude. Buddha Himself Made This Clear To His Followers. He Said You Should Not Accept Those Things I Taught Out Of Respect For Me, But Rather Through Investigation By Yourself.

Americans Are Interested Because They Are Open-minded. They Have An Education System That Teaches Them To Find Out For Themselves Why Things Are The Way They Are. Open-minded People Tend To Be Interested In Buddhism Because Buddha Urged People To Investigate Things - He Didn't Just Command Them To Believe.

Although We Are All The Same In Not Wanting Problems And Wanting A Peaceful Life, We Tend To Create A Lot Of Problems For Ourselves. Encountering Those Problems, Anger Develops And Overwhelms Our Mind, Which Leads To Violence. A Good Way To Counter This And To Work For A More Peaceful World Is To Develop Concern For Others. Then Our Anger, Jealousy And Other Destructive Emotions Will Naturally Weaken And Diminish.

Cultivating Care And Concern For Others Gives Rise To A Kind Of Inner Strength. No Matter What Difficulties Or Problems You Face, In This Wider Context They’ll Seem Less Significant And Troubling To You. The Inner Strength, Self-confidence And Courage You Gain By Focussing On Others’ Needs Instead Of Your Own, Brings With It A Deep, Calm Sense Of Satisfaction.

We Can Reject Everything Else: Religion, Ideology, All Received Wisdom. But We Cannot Escape The Necessity Of Love And Compassion. This, Then, Is My True Religion, My Simple Faith. In This Sense, There Is No Need For Temple Or Church, For Mosque Or Synagogue, No Need For Complicated Philosophy, Doctrine, Or Dogma. Our Own Heart, Our Own Mind, Is The Temple. Compassion Is The Wish For Another Being To Be Free From Suffering; Love Is Wanting Them To Have Happiness.

Media People Should Have Long Noses Like An Elephant To Smell Out Politicians, Mayors, Prime Ministers And Businessmen. We Need To Know The Reality, The Good And The Bad, Not Just The Appearance.

Look At Children. Of Course They May Quarrel, But Generally Speaking They Do Not Harbor Ill Feelings As Much Or As Long As Adults Do. Most Adults Have The Advantage Of Education Over Children, But What Is The Use Of An Education If They Show A Big Smile While Hiding Negative Feelings Deep Inside? Children Don�t Usually Act In Such A Manner. If They Feel Angry With Someone, They Express It, And Then It Is Finished. They Can Still Play With That Person The Following Day.

Great Changes Start With Individuals; The Basis Of World Peace Is Inner Peace In The Hearts Of Individuals.

Material Objects Give Rise To Physical Happiness, While Spiritual Development Gives Rise To Mental Happiness. Since We Experience Both Physical And Mental Happiness, We Need Both Material And Spiritual Development. This Is Why, For Our Own Good And That Of Society We Need To Balance Material Progress With Inner Development.

If You Want To Change The World, First Try To Improve And Bring About Change Within Yourself. That Will Help Change Your Family. From There It Just Gets Bigger And Bigger. Everything We Do Has Some Effect, Some Impact.

For Tibetans, The Real Strength Of Our Struggle Is Truth - Not Size, Money, Or Expertise.

When We Are Angry We Are Blind To Reality. Anger May Bring Us A Temporary Burst Of Energy, But That Energy Is Blind And It Blocks The Part Of Our Brain That Distinguishes Right From Wrong. To Deal With Our Problems, We Need To Be Practical And Realistic. If We Are To Be Realistic, We Need To Use Our Human Intelligence Properly, Which Means We Need A Calm Mind.

We Have Made A Great Effort To Maintain All Levels Of Buddhist Education; It Has Helped Us Have A Kind Of Renaissance, Really.

We Are Social Animals. Others' Suffering Is Ultimately Your Suffering; Their Happiness Is Ultimately Your Happiness.

The Fact That There Is Always A Positive Side To Life Is The One Thing That Gives Me A Lot Of Happiness.

If Indeed The Qualities Such As Love, Patience, Tolerance, And Forgiveness Are What Happiness Consists In, And If It Is Also True That Compassion, Defined As Concern For Others, Is Both The Source And The Fruit Of These Qualities, Then The More We Are Compassionate, The More We Provide For Our Own Happiness.

The Past Is Past, And The Future Is Yet To Come. That Means The Future Is In Your Hands - The Future Entirely Depends On The Present. That Realization Gives You A Great Responsibility.

Just As We Take For Granted The Need To Acquire Proficiency In The Basic Academic Subjects, I Am Hopeful That A Time Will Come When We Can Take It For Granted That Children Will Learn, As Part Of The Curriculum, The Indispensability Of Inner Values: Love, Compassion, Justice, And Forgiveness.

My Main Concern Is Meeting With Public Because My Main Commitment, Main Interest Is Promotion Of Human Value, Human Affection, Compassion And Religious Harmony.

It Is Important To Have Determination And Optimism And Patience. If You Lack Patience, Even When You Face Some Small Obstacle, You Lose Courage. There Is A Tibetan Saying, "even If You Have Failed At Something Nine Times, You Have Still Given It Effort Nine Times." I Think That's Important. Use Your Brain To Analyze The Situation. Do Not Rush Through It, But Think. Once You Decide What To Do About That Obstacle, Then There's A Possibility That You Will Achieve Your Goal.

If You Can, Help Others; If You Cannot Do That, At Least Do Not Harm Them.

Because We All Share This Planet Earth, We Have To Learn To Live In Harmony And Peace With Each Other And With Nature. This Is Not Just A Dream, But A Necessity.

If I Say, "i Am A Monk." Or "i Am A Buddhist," These Are, In Comparison To My Nature As A Human Being, Temporary. To Be Human Is Basic.

It Is Our Enemies Who Provide Us With The Challenge We Need To Develop The Qualities Of Tolerance, Patience And Compassion.

Let Us Cultivate Love And Compassion, Both Of Which Give Life True Meaning. This Is The Religion I Preach. It Is Simple. Its Temple Is The Heart. Its Teaching Is Love And Compassion. When We Meet Real Tragedy In Life, We Can React In Two Ways - Either By Losing Hope And Falling Into Self-destructive Habits, Or By Using The Challenge To Find Our Inner Strength.

For A Better, Happier, More Stable And Civilized Future, Each Of Us Must Develop A Sincere, Warm-hearted Feeling Of Brotherhood And Sisterhood.

If We Want To Save The World, We Must Have A Plan. But No Plan Will Work Unless We Meditate.

If There's Good, Strong Evidence From Science That Such And Such Is The Case And This Is Contrary To Buddhism, Then We Will Change.

When You Encounter Some Problems, If You Point Your Finger At Yourself And Not At Others, This Gives You Control Over Yourself And Calmness In A Situation, Where Otherwise Self-control Becomes Problematic.

Computers Make Me Totally Blank Out.

If The Work Is Worthwhile, Then Whether We Can Complete It Or Not, It's Worth Making The Attempt. That's Why Courage Is Important.

I Feel That Compassionate Thought Is The Most Precious Thing There Is. It Is Something That Only We Human Beings Can Develop. The Many Factors Which Divide Us Are Actually Much More Superficial Than Those We Share. Despite All Of The Things That Differentiate Us - Race, Language, Religion, Gender, Wealth And So On - We Are All Equal Concerning Our Fundamental Humanity.

The Key Point Is Kindness. With Kindness One Will Have Inner Peace. Through Inner Peace, World Peace Can One Day Be A Reality.

If The Mind Is Dominated By Hatred, The Best Part Of The Brain, Which Is Used To Judge Right And Wrong, Does Not Function Properly.

People Should Never Sit Alone For Too Long When They're Crying.

When We Speak Of A Calm State Of Mind Or Peace Of Mind, We Shouldn't Confuse That With An Insensitive State Of Apathy. Having A Calm Or Peaceful State Of Mind Doesn't Mean Being Spaced Out Or Completely Empty. Peace Of Mind Or A Calm State Of Mind Is Rooted In Affection And Compassion And Is Sensitive And Responsive To Others.

We Live Within The Environment. So That Directly Relates With Our Survival, Our Life. So Through That Way, More Concern Of Well Being Of Humanity, Then Naturally Concerned About Environment.

Happiness Is The Highest Form Of Health.

It Is Very Wrong For People To Feel Deeply Sad When They Lose Some Money, Yet When They Waste The Precious Moments Of Their Lives They Do Not Have The Slightest Feeling Of Repentance.

If We Can Cultivate A Concern For Others, Keeping In Mind The Oneness Of Humanity, We Can Build A More Compassionate World.

One Of The Expressions Of Western Over-reliance On Technology Can Be Seen In The Lack Of Patience In Industrial Society. When You Deal With Technology, Everything Happens At The Touch Of A Button. This Conditions You To Become So Impatient That When You Have An Emotional Or Personal Crisis, You Don't Allow Time For The Solution To Take Effect. This Leads To All Sorts Of Rash Responses, Like Quarrels, Fights And So On.

Happiness Is Determined More By One's State Of Mind Than By External Events.

With Genuine Love And Compassion, Another Person's Appearance Or Behavior Has No Affect On Your Attitude.

Peace Must First Be Developed Within An Individual. And I Believe That Love, Compassion, And Altruism Are The Fundamental Basis For Peace. Once These Qualities Are Developed Within An Individual, He Or She Is Then Able To Create An Atmosphere Of Peace And Harmony. This Atmosphere Can Be Expanded And Extended From The Individual To His Family, From The Family To The Community And Eventually To The Whole World.

Hatred, Jealousy, And Fear Hinder Peace Of Mind. When You're Angry Or Unforgiving, For Example, Your Mental Suffering Is Constant. It Is Better To Forgive Than To Spoil Your Peace Of Mind With Ill Feelings.

We Are Beset By Problems And If We Look For Their Source, We Find They Arise Because Of Our Selfishness, Because We Tend To Pursue Our Own Interests At The Expense Of Others. Our Various Religious Traditions Exist To Help Us Reduce These Problems. They All Teach Ways To Overcome Suffering Through Cultivating Love And Compassion, Tolerance, Patience And Contentment.

Man Sacrifices His Health In Order To Make Money. Then He Sacrifices Money To Recuperate His Health.

The Peace Of Mind, Is Very Essential For Our Health. So In That Level, I Think Scientific Finding, Immense Benefit To Get Our Wellness And Eventually Conviction, Peace Of Mind Is Not Just A Luxurious Item, But Peace Of Mind Is Actually Very Important For Our Survival, For Our Healthy Survival.

I Find Hope In The Darkest Of Days, And Focus In The Brightest. I Do Not Judge The Universe.

On A Daily Basis, You Must Take More Care Of Your Mind Than Just Money, Money, Money!

Every Noble Work Is Bound To Face Problems And Obstacles. It Is Important To Check Your Goal And Motivation Thoroughly. One Should Be Very Truthful, Honest, And Reasonable. One's Actions Should Be Good For Others, And For Oneself As Well. Once A Positive Goal Is Chosen, You Should Decide To Pursue It All The Way To The End. Even If It Is Not Realized, At Least There Will Be No Regret.

Everything Is Interconnected. My Interest Is Linked To Everyone Else's. Our Survival And Future Are Linked. Therefore The Destruction Of Your So-called Enemy Is Actually The Destruction Of Your Self.

Tragedy Should Be Utilized As A Source Of Strength.

Ageing Destroys Youth, Sickness Destroys Health, Degeneration Of Life Destroys All Excellent Qualities And Death Destroys Life. Even If You Are A Great Runner, You Cannot Run Away From Death. You Cannot Stop Death With Your Wealth, Through Your Magic Performances Or Recitation Of Mantras Or Even Medicines. Therefore, It Is Wise To Prepare For Your Death.

An Enemy Is Indeed A Precious Teacher.

Many Problems That Confront Us Today Are Created By Man, Whether They Are Violent Conflicts, Destruction Of The Environment, Poverty Or Hunger. These Problems Can Be Resolved Thanks To Human Efforts By Understanding That We Are Brother And Sister And By Developing This Sense Of Closeness. We Must Cultivate A Universal Responsibility Toward Each Other And Extend It To The Planet That We Have To Share.

Peace Starts Within Each One Of Us. When We Have Inner Peace, We Can Be At Peace With Those Around Us. When Our Community Is In A State Of Peace, It Can Share Peace With Neighboring Communities, And So On. When We Feel Love And Kindness Towards Others, It Not Only Makes Others Feel Loved And Cared For, But It Helps Us Also To Develop Inner Happiness And Peace.

The Best Way Of Fulfilling Your Own Interest Is To Take Care Of Others.

In My Childhood, And Particularly When I Take The Responsibility, I Already Have Sort Of Keen Desire, We Must Change Our System. Then As Soon As We Reach India, 1959, At Once We Start Working For Democratization. Now Here If Remain In A Political Sort Of Field, Supreme Leader, At The Same Time Religious Leader, That May Become Hindrance Of Proper Democracy.

Mental Happiness Is More Important Than Physical Comfort. Physical Comfort Comes From The Material. But Material Facilities Cannot Provide You With Peace Of Mind.

The Purpose Of Our Lives Is To Be Happy.

When Reason Ends, Then Anger Begins. Therefore, Anger Is A Sign Of Weakness.

A Generous Heart And Wholesome Actions Lead To Greater Peace.

When We Talk About Global Crisis, Or A Crisis Of Humanity, We Cannot Blame A Few Politicians, A Few Fanatics, Or A Few Troublemakers. The Whole Of Humanity Has A Responsibility Because It Is Our Business, Human Business. I Call This A Sense Of Universal Responsibility. That Is A Crucial Point.

The Question Is Not To Know What Is The Meaning Of Life, But What Meaning I Can Give To My Life.

The Future Will Be In The Hands Of Those Of You Who Belong To The 21st Century. You Have The Opportunity And Responsibility To Build A Better Humanity. Consequently We Lack A Clear Awareness Of The Inner Values That Are The Basis Of A Happy Life.

Follow The Three R's: - Respect For Self. - Respect For Others. - Responsibility For All Your Actions.

I Could Justify Violence Only In This Extreme Case, To Save The Last Living Knowledge Of Buddhism Itself.

Anger Or Hatred Is Like A Fisherman's Hook. It Is Very Important For Us To Ensure That We Are Not Caught By It.

A Compassionate Attitude Opens Our Inner Door, And As A Result It Is Much Easier To Communicate With Others. If There Is Too Much Self-centered Attitude, Then Fear, Doubt And Suspicion Come And As A Result Our Inner Door Closes. Then It Is Very Difficult To Communicate With Others.

Any Issue, Including Political, Economic And Religious Activities Human Beings Pursue In This World, Should Be Fully Understood Before We Pass Our Judgement. Therefore, It Is Very Important To Know The Causes. Whatever The Issue, We Should Be Able To See The Complete Picture. This Will Enable Us To Comprehend The Whole Story.

Real Affection Comes From The Face. Those Political Leaders, When They Meet, They Are Always Hugging, But Not Very Genuine. Deep, Sincerity Comes From Face And Eye.

Compassion Is One Of The Principal Things That Make Our Lives Meaningful. It Is The Source Of All Lasting Happiness And Joy.

On The Other Hand, Hatred, Jealousy And Fear Upset Our Peace Of Mind, Make Us Agitated And Affect Our Body Adversely. Even Our Body Needs Peace Of Mind And Is Not Suited To Agitation. We Cannot Learn Real Patience And Tolerance From A Guru Or A Friend. They Can Be Practiced Only When We Come In Contact With Someone Who Creates Unpleasant Experiences. According To Shantideva, Enemies Are Really Good For Us As We Can Learn A Lot From Them And Build Our Inner Strength.

Inner Peace Is The Key: If You Have Inner Peace, The External Problems Do Not Affect Your Deep Sense Of Peace And Tranquility... Without This Inner Peace, No Matter How Comfortable Your Life Is Materially, You May Still Be Worried, Disturbed Or Unhappy Because Of Circumstances.

It Is My Fundamental Conviction That Compassion - The Natural Capacity Of The Human Heart To Feel Concern For And Connection With Another Human Being - Constitutes A Basic Aspect Of Our Nature Shared By All Human Beings, As Well As Being The Foundation Of Our Happiness. Infinite Altruism Is The Basis Of Peace And Happiness. If You Want Altruism, You Must Control Hate And You Must Practice Patience. The Main Teachers Of Patience Are Our Enemies.

I Am Convinced That Everyone Can Develop A Good Heart And A Sense Of Universal Responsibility With Or Without Religion.
