There Is No Significant Division Between Us And Other People, Because Our Basic Natures Are The Same. If We Wish To Ensure Everyone's Peace And Happiness, We Need To Cultivate A Healthy Respect For The Diversity Of Our Peoples And Cultures, Founded On An Understanding Of This Fundamental Sameness Of All Human Beings.

Conservation Is Not Merely A Question Of Morality, But A Question Of Our Own Survival.

We Have A Largely Materialistic Lifestyle Characterized By A Materialistic Culture. However, This Only Provides Us With Temporary, Sensory Satisfaction, Whereas Long-term Satisfaction Is Based Not On The Senses But On The Mind. That’s Where Real Tranquility Is To Be Found. And Peace Of Mind Turns Out To Be A Significant Factor In Our Physical Health Too.

If One Assumes A Humble Attitude, One's Own Good Qualities Will Increase. Whereas If One Is Proud, One Will Become Jealous Of Others, One Will Look Down On Others, And Due To That There Will Be Unhappiness In Society.

We All Have The Potential To Show Others Love And Affection, But As We Progress In Our Materialistic World, These Values Tend To Remain Dormant. We Can Develop Them On The Basis Of Common Sense, Common Experience And Scientific Findings. The Response To The Recent Tragedy In The Philippines Is An Example Of How Such Values Are Awakened; People Helped Simply Because Others Are Suffering And In Need Of Support.

We Have Always Been A Nation Different From The Chinese. Long Ago We Fought Wars With Them.

Look At Situations From All Angles, And You Will Become More Open.

The World Has Also Learned That Economic Growth, By Itself, Cannot Close The Gap Between Rich And Poor.

Live A Good, Honourable Life. Then When You Get Older And Look Back, You'll Be Able To Enjoy It A Second Time.

We Must Have A Pure, Honest, And Warm-hearted Motivation, And On Top Of That, Determination, Optimism, Hope, And The Ability Not To Be Discouraged. The Whole Of Humanity Depends On This Motivation.

To A Large Extent, Whether You Suffer Depends On How You Respond To A Given Situation.

The Question Of Real, Lasting World Peace Concerns Human Beings, So Basic Human Feelings Are Also At Its Roots. Through Inner Peace, Genuine World Peace Can Be Achieved. In This The Importance Of Individual Responsibility Is Quite Clear; An Atmosphere Of Peace Must First Be Created Within Ourselves, Then Gradually Expanded To Include Our Families, Our Communities, And Ultimately The Whole Planet.

Perhaps Our Teachings Seem Less Religious And More Technical, Like Psychology, So They Are Easier For Secular People To Use.

When You Encounter Some Problems, If You Point Your Finger At Yourself And Not At Others, This Gives You Control Over Yourself And Calmness In A Situation, Where Otherwise Self-control Becomes Problematic.

Sometimes, Whether A Desire Is Excessive Or Negative Depends On The Circumstances Or Society In Which You Live In.

The Ultimate Source Of A Happy Life Is Warm-heartedness. This Means Extending To Others The Kind Of Concern We Have For Ourselves. On A Simple Level We Find That If We Have A Compassionate Heart We Naturally Have More Friends. And Scientists Today Are Discovering That While Anger And Hatred Eat Into Our Immune System, Warm-heartedness And Compassion Are Good For Our Health.

Those Who Like Myself, Consider Themselves To Be Followers Of Buddha, Should Practice As Much As We Can. To Followers Of Other Religious Traditions, I Would Like To Say, 'please Practice Your Own Religion Seriously And Sincerely.' And To Non-believers, I Request You To Try To Be Warm-hearted. I Ask This Of You Because These Mental Attitudes Actually Bring Us Happiness.

Education Is The Proper Way To Promote Compassion And Tolerance In Society. Compassion And Peace Of Mind Bring A Sense Of Confidence That Reduce Stress And Anxiety, Whereas Anger And Hatred Come From Frustration And Undermine Our Sense Of Trust. Because Of Ignorance, Many Of Our Problems Are Our Own Creation. Education, However, Is The Instrument That Increases Our Ability To Employ Our Own Intelligence.

Although We Are All The Same In Not Wanting Problems And Wanting A Peaceful Life, We Tend To Create A Lot Of Problems For Ourselves. Encountering Those Problems, Anger Develops And Overwhelms Our Mind, Which Leads To Violence. A Good Way To Counter This And To Work For A More Peaceful World Is To Develop Concern For Others. Then Our Anger, Jealousy And Other Destructive Emotions Will Naturally Weaken And Diminish.

What We Do And Think In Our Own Lives, Then, Becomes Of Extreme Importance As It Effects Everything We're Connected To.

Material Development Alone Does Not Yield Genuine Inner Peace.

In Pluralistic, Democratic Societies, There Is The Freedom To Adopt The Religion Of Your Choice. This Is Good. This Lets Curious People Like You Run Around On The Loose!

If A Problem Can Be Solved It Will Be. If It Can Not Be Solved There Is No Use Worrying About It.

The Basis Of Human Rights Is Happy Life. Everyone Wants To Lead A Happy Life For Which We Need To Have A Holistic Approach.

How Can We Eliminate The Deepest Source Of All Unsatisfactory Experience? Only By Cultivating Certain Qualities Within Our Mindstream.

At A Fundamental Level, As Human Beings, We Are All The Same; Each One Of Us Aspires To Happiness And Each One Of Us Does Not Wish To Suffer. This Is Why, Whenever I Have The Opportunity, I Try To Draw People's Attention To What As Members Of The Human Family We Have In Common And The Deeply Interconnected Nature Of Our Existence And Welfare.

It Is The Enemy Who Can Truly Teach Us To Practice The Virtues Of Compassion And Tolerance.

Spiritual Practice . . . Involves, On The One Hand, Acting Out Of Concern For Others' Well-being. On The Other, It Entails Transforming Ourselves So That We Become More Readily Disposed To Do So.

The Rationale For Loving Others Is The Recognition Of The Simple Fact That Every Living Being Has The Same Right To And The Same Desire For Happiness, And Not Suffering, And The Consideration That You As One Individual Are One Life Unit As Compared With The Mulititude Of Others In Their Ceaseless Quest For Happiness.

I Make Small Mistakes Every Day. But Major Mistakes? It Doesn't Seem So. I've Examined My Service To The Tibetan People And To Humanity, And I've Done As Much As I Can In My Life.

Within The Framework Of The Buddhist Path, Reflecting On Suffering Has Tremendous Importance Because -realizing The Nature Of Suffering, You Will Develop Greater Resolve To Put An End To The Causes Of Suffering And The Unwholesome Deeds Which Lead To Suffering. And It Will Increase Your Enthusiasm For Engaging In The Wholesome Actions And Deeds Which Lead To Happiness And Joy.

It Is Our Custom To Say That Someone Is 'lucky' Or 'unlucky' If They Meet With Fortunate Or Unfortunate Circumstances, Respectively. It Is, However, Too Simplistic To Think In Terms Of Random 'luck.' Even From A Scientific Point Of View, This Is Not A Sufficient Explanation.

When We Talk About Global Crisis, Or A Crisis Of Humanity, We Cannot Blame A Few Politicians, A Few Fanatics, Or A Few Troublemakers. The Whole Of Humanity Has A Responsibility Because It Is Our Business, Human Business. I Call This A Sense Of Universal Responsibility. That Is A Crucial Point.

If The Basic Human Nature Was Aggressive, We Would Have Been Born With Animal Claws & Huge Teeth -- But Ours Are Very Short, Very Pretty, Very Weak! That Means We Are Not Well Equipped To Be Aggressive Beings. Even The Size Of Our Mouth Is Very Small. So I Think The Basic Nature Of Human Beings Should Be Gentle.

To My Mind, There Are Two Things That, In Life, You Can Do About Death. Either You Can Choose To Ignore It, In Which Case You May Have Some Success In Making The Idea Of It Go Away For A Limited Period Of Time, Or You Can Confront The Prospect Of Your Own Death And Try To Analyze It And, In So Doing, Try To Minimize Some Of The Inevitable Suffering That It Causes. Neither Way Can You Actually Overcome It.

Appearance Is Something Absolute, But Reality Is Not That Way - Everything Is Interdependent, Not Absolute.

Action For Happiness Encourages Each Of Us To Live More Compassionately And Put The Happiness Of Others At The Centre Of Our Lives. This Is The Path To Lasting Peace And Happiness

I Always Believed In Love, Compassion And A Sense Of Universal Respect. Every Human Being Has That Potential.

If You Resort To Violent Methods Because The Other Side Has Destroyed Your Monastery, For Example, You Then Have Lost Not Only Your Monastery, But Also Your Special Buddhist Practices Of Detachment, Love, And Compassion.

I Feel That Compassionate Thought Is The Most Precious Thing There Is. It Is Something That Only We Human Beings Can Develop. And If We Have A Good Heart, A Warm Heart, Warm Feelings, We Will Be Happy And Satisfied Ourselves, And Our Friends Will Experience A Friendly And Peaceful Atmosphere As Well. This Can Be Experienced Community To Community, Country To Country, Continent To Continent.

The Future Will Be In The Hands Of Those Of You Who Belong To The 21st Century. You Have The Opportunity And Responsibility To Build A Better Humanity. This Means Developing Warm-heartednes S In This Very Life, Here And Now. So, Do Whatever Work You Do, But Ask Yourselves Now And Then, 'how Can I Contribute To Human Beings Being Happier And More Peaceful?'

We Are Born And Reborn Countless Number Of Times, And It Is Possible That Each Being Has Been Our Parent At One Time Or Another. Therefore, It Is Likely That All Beings In This Universe Have Familial Connections.

I Think, That In The Twenty-second Century, There Will Be More Female Reincarnations At Female Institutions. Then There'll Be Competition Between Male Lama Institutions And Female Lama Institutions. It'll Be A Positive Sort Of Competition.

Furthermore, I Shall Explain The Nature Of Dharmata: Such A Nature As This Cannot Be Determined To Be Any One Thing. So However You Label It, That Is How It Appears.

Happiness Does Not Come About Only Due To External Circumstances; It Mainly Derives From Inner Attitudes.

Just As We Take For Granted The Need To Acquire Proficiency In The Basic Academic Subjects, I Am Hopeful That A Time Will Come When We Can Take It For Granted That Children Will Learn, As Part Of The Curriculum, The Indispensability Of Inner Values: Love, Compassion, Justice, And Forgiveness.

Other Human Beings Have A Right To Peace And Happiness That Is Equal To Our Own; Therefore We Have A Responsibility To Help Those In Need.

Buddha Himself Taught Different Teachings To Different People Under Different Circumstances. For Some People, There Are Beliefs Based On A Creator. For Others, No Creator. The Only "definitive Truth" For Buddhism Is The Absolute Negation Of Any One Truth As The Definitive Truth.

Reality Is Devoid Of Any Intrinsic Identity That Can Be Captured By Any One Single Proposition - That Is What Buddha Meant By "voidness."

When Ever Buddhism Has Taken Root In A New Land, There Has Been A Certain Variation In The Style In Which It Is Observed. The Buddha Himself Taught Differently According To The Place, The Occasion And The Situation Of Those Who Were Listening To Him.

I Have Never Been Any Place Where I Was Not First Invited. And Upon Invitation, If I Feel That There Is Potential For Making Some Contribution To Humanity, I Will Comply In Spite Of Being Tired.

Children Are Our Greatest Untapped Resource.

All The World’s Major Religions, With Their Emphasis On Love, Compassion, Patience, Tolerance And Forgiveness, Can And Do Promote Inner Values. But The Reality Of The World Today Is That Grounding Ethics In Religion Is No Longer Adequate. This Is Why I Believe The Time Has Come To Find A Way Of Thinking About Spirituality And Ethics That Is Beyond Religion.

We Can Never Obtain Peace In The World If We Neglect The Inner World And Don't Make Peace With Ourselves. World Peace Must Develop Out Of Inner Peace. Without Inner Peace It Is Impossible To Achieve World Peace, External Peace. Weapons Themselves Do Not Act. They Have Not Come Out Of The Blue. Man Has Made Them. But Even Given Those Weapons, Those Terrible Weapons, They Cannot Act By Themselves. As Long As They Are Left Alone In Storage They Cannot Do Any Harm. A Human Being Must Use Them. Someone Must Push The Button. Satan, The Evil Powers, Cannot Push That Button. Human Beings Must Do It.

Compassion Naturally Creates A Positive Atmosphere, And As A Result You Feel Peaceful And Content.

It Does Not Matter Whether You Are A Theist Or Atheist, What Matters Is Sincerity, Forgiveness, And Compassion.

The Egotistical Ambition To Always Want To Earn More Money Harms Both The Company And The Individual Himself. That Is The Biggest Weakness Of Many Managers - The Financial Crisis Has Proven This.

Today, More Than Ever Before, Life Must Be Characterized By A Sense Of Universal Responsibility, Not Only Nation To Nation And Human To Human, But Also Human To Other Forms Of Life.

Compassion And Love Constitute Non-violence In Action. They Are The Source Of All Spiritual Qualities: Forgiveness, Tolerance, All The Virtues. They Give Meaning To Our Activities And Makes Them Constructive. There Is Nothing Amazing About Being Rich Or Highly Educated; Only When The Individual Has A Warm Heart Do These Attributes Become Worthwhile.

The Most Important Thing Is Practice In Daily Life; Then You Can Know Gradually The True Value Of Religion. Doctrine Is Not Meant For Mere Knowledge, But For The Improvement Of Our Minds. In Order To Do That, It Must Be Part Of Our Life. If You Put Religious Doctrine In A Building And When You Leave The Building Depart From The Practices, You Cannot Gain Its Value.

If You Wish To Heal Your Own Sadness Or Anger, Seek To Heal The Sadness Or Anger Of Another. Those Others Are Waiting For You Now. Different Parts Of The Body Can Die Separately. However, In The Buddhist System, The Word Death Is Not Used In That Way. You'd Never Speak Of The Death Of A Particular Part Of The Body, But Rather Of The Death Of An Entire Person. When People Say That A Certain Person Died, We Don't Ask, "well, Which Part Died?"

It Is Not Enough To Be Compassionate. You Must Act. There Are Two Aspects To Action. One Is To Overcome The Distortions And Afflictions Of Your Own Mind, That Is, In Terms Of Calming And Eventually Dispelling Anger. This Is Action Out Of Compassion. The Other Is More Social, More Public. When Something Needs To Be Done In The World To Rectify The Wrongs, If One Is Really Concerned With Benefitting Others, One Needs To Be Engaged, Involved.

If Someone Does Not Smile At You, Be Generous And Offer Your Own Smile. Nobody Needs A Smile More Than The One That Cannot Smile To Others.

In Daily Practice, Reflect On The Benefits Of Love, Compassion And Kindness, Then Reflect On The Disadvantages Of Anger. Such Continuous Contemplation, The Growing Appreciation Of Love, Has The Effect Of Reducing Our Inclination Towards Hatred And Increasing Our Respect For Love. By This Means Even Anger Can Be Diminished.

Buddhism Does Not Accept A Theory Of God, Or A Creator. According To Buddhism, One's Own Actions Are The Creator, Ultimately. Some People Say That, From A Certain Angle, Buddhism Is Not A Religion But Rather A Science Of Mind.

We Have To Have Some Form Of Politics. Politics Is A Form Of Resolving Conflicts. Politics Which Comes From Sincere Motivation Is Constructive.

Everyone Wants A Happy Life Without Difficulties Or Suffering. We Create Many Of The Problems We Face. No One Intentionally Creates Problems, But We Tend To Be Slaves To Powerful Emotions Like Anger, Hatred And Attachment That Are Based On Misconceived Projections About People And Things. We Need To Find Ways Of Reducing These Emotions By Eliminating The Ignorance That Underlies Them And Applying Opposing Forces.

Peace Starts Within Each One Of Us. When We Have Inner Peace, We Can Be At Peace With Those Around Us.

Once A Positive Goal Is Chosen, You Should Decide To Pursue It All The Way To The End. Even If It Is Not Realized, At Least There Will Be No Regret.

The Source Of Peace Is Within Us; So Also The Source Of War. And The Real Enemy Is Within Us, And Not Outside. The Source Of War Is Not The Existence Of Nuclear Weapons Or Other Arms. It Is The Minds Of Human Beings Who Decide To Push The Button And To Use Those Arms Out Of Hatred, Anger Or Greed.

We Need To Strengthen Such Inner Values As Contentment, Patience And Tolerance, As Well As Compassion For Others. Keeping In Mind That It Is Expressions Of Affection Rather Than Money And Power That Attract Real Friends, Compassion Is The Key To Ensuring Our Own Well-being.
