Some People Say That The West Has A Cruel History. These People Also May See The Achievements Of Western Countries - In Terms Of The Economy, Education, Health, And Social Achievements - As A Result Of Exploitation Of Poorer Countries, Including Arab Countries. Western Nations Get Rich By Using Resources Such As Arab Oil. Meanwhile, The Countries Supplying Them Raw Materials Remain Poor. Due To Such Injustices, Jealousies Are Created.

While People Are Often Content To Criticize And Blame Others For What Goes Wrong, Surely We Should At Least Attempt To Put Forward Constructive Ideas. One Thing Is For Certain: Given Human Beings' Love Of Truth, Justice, Peace, And Freedom, Creating A Better, More Compassionate World Is A Genuine Possibility. The Potential Is There.

I Have Found A Much Greater Appreciation Of Buddhism Because I Couldn't Take It For Granted Here In Exile.

Peace Is Not Just The Mere Absence Of Violence Or Disturbance. It's When There Is A Possibility Of Conflict, But You Deliberately Avoid Violence And Adopt Methods To Solve The Problem Through Peaceful Means. That Is Real Peace.

Consider That Not Only Do Negative Thoughts And Emotions Destroy Our Experience Of Peace, They Also Undermine Our Health.

Although You Can Find Certain Differences Among The Buddhist Philosophical Schools About How The Universe Came Into Being, The Basic Common Question Addressed Is How The Two Fundamental Principles-external Matter And Internal Mind Or Consciousness-although Distinct, Affect One Another. External Causes And Conditions Are Responsible For Certain Of Our Experiences Of Happiness And Suffering. Yet We Find That It Is Principally Our Own Feelings, Our Thoughts And Our Emotions, That Really Determine Whether We Are Going To Suffer Or Be Happy.

Peace, In The Sense Of The Absence Of War, Is Of Little Value To Someone Who Is Dying Of Hunger Or Cold. It Will Not Remove The Pain Of Torture Inflicted On A Prisoner Of Conscience. It Does Not Comfort Those Who Have Lost Their Loved Ones In Floods Caused By Senseless Deforestation In A Neighboring Country. Peace Can Only Last Where Human Rights Are Respected, Where The People Are Fed, And Where Individuals And Nations Are Free.

When You Practice Gratefulness, There Is A Sense Of Respect Toward Others.

The Key To Genuine Happiness Is In Our Hands. To Think This Way Is To Discover The Essential Values Of Kindness, Brotherly Love And Altruism. The More Clearly We See The Benefits Of These Values, The More We Will Seek To Reject Anything That Opposes Them; In This Way We Will Be Able To Bring About Inner Transformation.

If You Concern Yourself Mainly With Others, The Broader Your Thinking Becomes, And Life’s Inevitable Difficulties Disturb You Less.

There Is Only One Important Point You Must Keep In Your Mind And Let It Be Your Guide. No Matter What People Call You, You Are Just Who You Are. Keep To This Truth. You Must Ask Yourself How Is It You Want To Live Your Life. We Live And We Die, This Is The Truth That We Can Only Face Alone. No One Can Help Us, Not Even The Buddha. So Consider Carefully, What Prevents You From Living The Way You Want To Live Your Life?

A Good Friend Who Points Out Mistakes And Imperfections And Rebukes Evil Is To Be Respected As If He Reveals The Secret Of Some Hidden Treasure.

The Mind Is Key. If Anything Should Be Considered A God, So To Speak, It Is The Mind, Not Money. A Healthy Positive Mind Is The Utmost Priority. But If We Were To Reverse The Order Of These Priorities, What Would Happen? I Find It Hard To Imagine How A Person With Great Wealth, Bad Health, No Friends, And No Peace Of Mind Could Feel Even Slightly Happy.

Awareness Of Death Is The Very Bedrock Of The Entire Path. Until You Have Developed This Awareness, All Other Practices Are Obstructed.

One Problem With Our Current Society Is That We Have An Attitude Towards Education As If It Is There To Simply Make You More Clever, Make You More Ingenious... Even Though Our Society Does Not Emphasize This, The Most Important Use Of Knowledge And Education Is To Help Us Understand The Importance Of Engaging In More Wholesome Actions And Bringing About Discipline Within Our Minds. For A Person Who Cherishes Compassion And Love, The Practice Of Tolerance Is Essential, And For That, And Enemy Is Indispinsable. So We Should Be Grateful To Our Enemies, For It Is They Who Can Best Help Us To Develop A Tranquil Mind.

We Have To Make A Sustained Effort, Again And Again, To Cultivate The Positive Aspects Within Us.

I Met An American Lady Many Years Ago, Much Distant. Then I Told Her About My Own Difficult Experiences And I Showed Some Genuine Concern. She Responded, "why Are You So Concerned About Me?" We Need More Patience. At A Fundamental Level, We Are The Same Human Brothers And Sisters. Then Forget It. The Human Mind Is Very Strange. Like That.

Genuine Concern

If The Situation Was Such That There Was Only One Learned Lama Or Genuine Practitioner Alive, A Person Whose Death Would Cause The Whole Of Tibet To Lose All Hope Of Keeping Its Buddhist Way Of Life, Then It Is Conceivable That In Order To Protect That One Person It Might Be Justified For One Or 10 Enemies To Be Eliminated If There Was No Other Way.

As Far As Mental Development Is Concerned, We Should Never Be Complacent. We Can Develop Our Minds Infinitely - There Is No Limitation.

Happiness Cannot Come From Hatred Or Anger. Nobody Can Say, 'today I Am Happy Because This Morning I Was Angry.' On The Contrary, People Feel Uneasy And Sad And Say, 'today I Am Not Very Happy, Because I Lost My Temper This Morning.'

True Change Is Within; Leave The Outside As It Is.

Positive Thinking

If We Develop Concern For Other People's Welfare, Share Other People's Suffering, And Help Them, Ultimately We Will Benefit. If We Think Only Of Ourselves And Forget About Others, Ultimately We Will Lose. The More We Care For The Happiness Of Others, The Greater Our Own Sense Of Well-being Becomes.

On A Daily Basis, You Must Take More Care Of Your Mind Than Just Money, Money, Money!

Ultimately, The Human Being Is In The Mercy Of Nature.

The Way To Change Others' Minds Is With Affection, And Not Anger.

Helping Others Is Not Limited To Providing Food, Shelter, And So Forth, But Includes Relieving The Basic Causes Of Suffering And Providing The Basic Causes Of Happiness.

Compassion Is The Wish To See Others Free From Suffering.

If You Shift Your Focus From Oneself To Others, And Think More About Others' Well-being And Welfare, It Has An Immediate Liberating Effect.

Our Prime Purpose In This Life Is To Help Others. And If You Can't Help Them, At Least Don't Hurt Them.

Inner Values Like Friendship, Trust, Honesty And Compassion Are Much More Reliable Than Money - They Always Bring Happiness And Strength.

Sensory Experience Does Not Offset The Intense Pain Or Pleasure We Feel On A Mental Level; It May Distract Us, But Doesn't Overcome It. On The Other Hand, If We Have Peace Of Mind, Even Negative Experiences Do Not Upset Us. Peace Of Mind Is Also Good For Our Physical Health. Medical Experts Have Found That Anger, Hatred And Fear Eat Into Our Immune System. Being Calm And Relaxed Is Better For Our Physical Well-being.

Negative Experiences

It Is Not Only Our Right As Members Of The Global Human Family To Protest When Our Brothers And Sisters Are Being Treated Brutally, But It Is Also Our Duty To Do Whatever We Can To Hep Them.

Pain Can Change You, But That Doesn't Mean It Has To Be A Bad Change. Take That Pain And Turn It Into Wisdom.

If We Human Beings Rely Only On Material Development, We Can’t Be Sure Of A Positive Outcome. Employing Technology Motivated By Anger And Hatred Is Likely To Be Destructive. It Will Only Be Beneficial If We Seek The Welfare Of All Beings. Human Beings Are The Only Species With The Potential To Destroy The World. Because Of The Risks Of Unrestrained Desire And Greed We Need To Cultivate Contentment And Simplicity.

We Live Within The Environment. So That Directly Relates With Our Survival, Our Life. So Through That Way, More Concern Of Well Being Of Humanity, Then Naturally Concerned About Environment.

Too Much Of A Self-centered Attitude Creates Mistrust And Suspicion In Others, Which Can In Turn Lead To Fear. But If You Have More Of An Open Mind, And You Cultivate A Sense Of Concern For Others' Well-being, Then, No Matter What Others' Attitudes Are, You Can Keep Your Inner Peace.

Each Of You Should Feel That You Have Great Potential And That, With Self-confidence And A Little More Effort, Change Really Is Possible If You Want It. If You Feel That Your Present Way Of Life Is Unpleasant Or Has Some Difficulties, Then Don't Look At These Negative Things. See The Positive Side, The Potential, And Make An Effort.

Of Course, There Are Different Truths On Different Levels. Things Are True Relative To Other Things; "long" And "short" Relate To Each Other, "high" And "low," And So On. But Is There Any Absolute Truth? Something Self-sufficient, Independently True In Itself? I Don't Think So.

You Use Force, You Create Fear. Fear Destroys Trust. Trust Is The Basis Of Harmony. The Hardliner Believes Harmony And Unity Can Be Brought By Force. That's Totally Unscientific, Totally Wrong.

If We Looked Down At The World From Space, We Would Not See Any Demarcations Of National Boundaries. We Would Simply See One Small Planet, Just One.

A Balanced And Skillful Approach To Life, Taking Care To Avoid Extremes, Becomes A Very Important Factor In Conducting One's Everyday Existence.

Certain Beliefs Must Accompany Every Action: One Should Act Without Selfishness, Cultivate Compassion For All Living Things, And Develop Respect For Others.

Real Change In Society Must Start From Individual Initiative.

I'm Sure All Of Us Agree That We Need To Overcome Violence, But We First Need To Examine Whether It Has Any Value. From A Strictly Practical Perspective, On Certain Occasions Violence Appears To Be Useful. We Can Solve A Problem Quickly By Force. But This Success Is Often At The Expense Of The Rights And Welfare Of Others. Although One Problem Has Been Solved, The Seed Of Another Has Been Planted.

Change Only Takes Place Through Action, Not Through Meditation And Prayer.

I Do Not See Any Reason Why Animals Should Be Slaughtered To Serve As Human Diet When There Are So Many Substitutes. After All, Man Can Live Without Meat.

Vegetarian Diet

The Real Test Of Compassion Is Not What We Say In Abstract Discussions But How We Conduct Ourselves In Daily Life.

Buddha Was Speaking About Reality. Reality May Be One, In Its Deepest Essence, But Buddha Also Stated That All Propositions About Reality Are Only Contingent. Reality Is Devoid Of Any Intrinsic Identity That Can Be Captured By Any One Single Proposition - That Is What Buddha Meant By "voidness." Therefore, Buddhism Strongly Discourages Blind Faith And Fanaticism.

Our Attitude Towards Suffering Becomes Very Important Because It Can Affect How We Cope With Suffering When It Arises.

I Believe That At Every Level Of Society The Key To A Happier World Is The Growth Of Compassion. We Do Not Need To Become Religious, Nor Do We Need To Believe In An Ideology. All That Is Necessary Is For Each Of Us To Develop Our Good Human Qualities.

More Compassionate Mind, More Sense Of Concern For Other's Well-being, Is Source Of Happiness.

Concern For Others

Peace Must First Be Developed Within An Individual. And I Believe That Love, Compassion, And Altruism Are The Fundamental Basis For Peace. Once These Qualities Are Developed Within An Individual, He Or She Is Then Able To Create An Atmosphere Of Peace And Harmony. This Atmosphere Can Be Expanded And Extended From The Individual To His Family, From The Family To The Community And Eventually To The Whole World.

Today, More Than Ever Before, Life Must Be Characterized By A Sense Of Universal Responsibility, Not Only Nation To Nation And Human To Human, But Also Human To Other Forms Of Life.

Developing Love And Compassion And Reducing Anger And Spite Is A Universal Activity Which Requires No Faith In Any Religion Whatsoever

Each Individual Has A Universal Responsibility To Shape Institutions To Serve Human Needs.

If I Am Only Happy For Myself, Many Fewer Chances For Happiness. If I Am Happy When Good Things Happen To Other People, Billions More Chances To Be Happy!

There Are Two Kinds Of Satisfaction Or Happiness: One Mainly Through Mental Peace; Another Physical Comfort

Medical Science Begin To Notice For Good Health, Peace Of Mind, Self-confidence, Optimism Is Something Very Important. And Also Preventive Measure.

If The Mind Is Dominated By Hatred, The Best Part Of The Brain, Which Is Used To Judge Right And Wrong, Does Not Function Properly.

In Spiritual Growth, It Is Important To Avoid Imbalances Between Academic Or Intellectual Learning And Practical Implementation. Otherwise There Is A Danger That Too Much Intellectualiza Tion Will Kill The More Contemplative Practices And Too Much Emphasis On Practical Implementation Without Study Will Kill The Understanding. There Has Got To Be A Balance.

The Process Of Dying Begins With The Dissolution Of The Elements Within The Body. It Has Eight Stages, Beginning With The Dissolution Of The Earth Element, Then The Water, Fire And Windelements. The Color: Appearance Of A White Vision, Increase Of The Red Element, Black Near-attainment, And Finally The Clear Light Of Death.

Happiness Is Not Something Ready Made. It Comes From Your Own Actions.

Basically, The Buddhist Attitude Is That You Should Not Accept Certain Things Through Sheer Faith. And For That You Need A Skeptical Attitude. Buddha Himself Made This Clear To His Followers. He Said You Should Not Accept Those Things I Taught Out Of Respect For Me, But Rather Through Investigation By Yourself.

For Change To Happen In Any Community, The Initiative Must Come From The Individual.

A Lot Of Problems We Are Facing, Essentially, Man Made Problem. Own Creation. Not Due To Lack Of Intelligence.

Buddha Urged People To Investigate Things - He Didn't Just Command Them To Believe.

Even Modern Medical Researchers Have Come To The Conclusion That Peace Of Mind Is Vital For Good Health.

Until You Have The Inner Discipline That Brings Calmness Of Mind, External Facilities And Conditions Will Never Bring The Joy And Happiness You Seek. On The Other Hand, If You Possess This Inner Quality, Calmness Of Mind, A Degree Of Stability Within, Even If You Lack The Various External Factors That You Would Normally Require To Be Happy, It Will Still Be Possible To Live A Happy And Joyful Life.

When A Person Is In A Miserable Situation, Then, Yes, It Is Difficult To Develop Genuine Compassion Toward Others. That's Why I Find It Difficult To Say To Poor People, "please Have Compassion Toward Millionaires." That's Not Easy.

Good Human Qualities-honesty, Sincerity, A Good Heart-cannot Be Bought With Money, Nor Can They Be Produced My Machines, But Only By The Mind Itself. We Can Call This The Inner Light, Or God's Blessing, Or Human Qualitity. This Is The Essence Of Mankind.

We Need To Understand How Destructive Emotions Affect Us And Constructive Emotions Can Help Us, So That We Can Maintain Our Peace Of Mind.

Of Course, When I Say That Human Nature Is Gentleness, It Is Not 100 Percent So. Every Human Being Has That Nature, But There Are Many People Acting Against Their Nature, Being False.

Whether You Believe In God Or Not Does Not Matter Much, Whether You Believe In Buddha Or Not Does Not Matter So Much; As A Buddhist, Whether You Believe In Reincarnation Or Not Does Not Matter So Much. You Must Lead A Good Life.

After I Handed Over All My Authority, I Feel Now Our Struggle [for Tibet ] Become Much, Much Safer. And Me Personally, The Day I Officially Handed Over, That Night, Very Unusual Sound. I Am Quite Free Now.

So Our Future Is In Our Own Hands. What Greater Free Will Do We Need?

People Should Not Rush To Change Religions. There Is Real Value In Finding The Spiritual Resources You Need In Your Home Religion. Even Secular Humanism Has Great Spiritual Resources; It Is Almost Like A Religion To Me.

Friends, Genuine Friends, Are Attracted By A Warm Heart, Not Money, Not Power. A Genuine Friend Considers You As Just Another Human Being, As A Brother Or Sister, And Shows Affection On That Level, Regardless Of Whether You Are Rich Or Poor, Or In A High Position; That Is A Genuine Friend.

The Point Of Life Is Happiness.

It Seems That For Some People The Idea Of Compassion Entails A Complete Disregard For Or Even A Sacrifice Of Their Own Interests. This Is Not The Case. In Fact, You First Of All Have To Have A Wish To Be Happy Yourself - If You Don't Love Yourself Like That, How Can You Love Others?

Learning Is The First Step In Making Positive Changes Within Yourself. Other Factors Are Conviction, Determination, Action & Effort. Learning & Education Help Develop Conviction About The Need To Change & Increase Your Commitment. Conviction Then Develops Into Determination. Next, Strong Determination Leads To Action: A Sustained Effort To Implement The Changes. This Final Factor Of Effort Is Critical.

So, The Tendency Of Our Childish Nature Is To Take Small Things Too Seriously And Get Easily Offended, Whereas When We Are Confronted With Situations Which Have Long-term Consequences, We Tend To Take Things Less Seriously

The Nature Of Our Motivation Determines The Character Of Our Work.

Hardship, In Forcing Us To Exercise Greater Patience And Forbearance In Daily Life, Actually Makes Us Stronger And More Robust. From The Daily Experience Of Hardship Comes A Greater Capacity To Accept Difficulties Without Losing Our Sense Of Inner Calm. Of Course, I Do Not Advocate Seeking Out Hardship As A Way Of Life, But Merely Wish To Suggest That, If You Relate To It Constructively, It Can Bring Greater Inner Strength And Fortitude.

I've Met Difficulties, But As The Saying Goes: 'wherever You're Happy, You Can Call Home, And Whoever Is Kind To You Is Like Your Parents.' I've Been Happy And At Home In The World At Large. Living A Meaningful Life Isn't Just A Matter Of Money; It's About Dedicating Your Life To Helping Others.

Whether We Love Humanity Or Not, We Must Realize That We Are Part Of It. My Future Depends Entirely On The Future Of Humanity, And So I Am Compelled To Take Care Of Humanity. That Is Why Being Compassionate Is Actually In My Own Best Interest. And A Symptom Of My Own Peace Of Mind Is That I Can Share Comfort With Others Around Me.

There Can Be No Peace As Long As There Is Grinding Poverty, Social Injustice, Inequality, Oppression, Environmental Degradation, And As Long As The Weak And Small Continue To Be Trodden By The Mighty And Powerful.

Like Anyone Else, I Too Have The Potential For Violence; I Too Have Anger In Me. However, I Try To Recall That Anger Is A Destructive Emotion. I Remind Myself That Scientists Now Say That Anger Is Bad For Our Health; It Eats Into Our Immune System. So, Anger Destroys Our Peace Of Mind And Our Physical Health. We Shouldn’t Welcome It Or Think Of It As Natural Or As A Friend.

If We Want To Save The World, We Must Have A Plan. But No Plan Will Work Unless We Meditate.

If You Practice In Accord With Your Individual Capacity, Little By Little You Will Find More Pleasure And Joy In It. As You Gain Inner Strength, Your Positive Actions Will Gain In Profundity And Scope.

One Can Overcome The Forces Of Negative Emotions, Like Anger And Hatred, By Cultivating Their Counter-forces, Like Love And Compassion.

In The Present Circumstances, No One Can Afford To Assume That Someone Else Will Solve Their Problems. Every Individual Has A Responsibility To Help Guide Our Global Family In The Right Direction. Good Wishes Are Not Sufficient; We Must Become Actively Engaged.
