Our Enemies Are Our Greatest Teachers.

From One Point Of View We Can Say That We Have Human Bodies And Are Practicing The Buddha's Teachings And Are Thus Much Better Than Insects. But We Can Also Say That Insects Are Innocent And Free From Guile, Where As We Often Lie And Misrepresent Ourselves In Devious Ways In Order To Achieve Our Ends Or Better Ourselves. From This Perspective, We Are Much Worse Than Insects.

Ours Is Clearly A Pivotal Generation. We Have Global Communication And Yet Confrontation Is More Common Than Dialogue.

Inner Peace Is The Key: If You Have Inner Peace, The External Problems Do Not Affect Your Deep Sense Of Peace And Tranquility... Without This Inner Peace, No Matter How Comfortable Your Life Is Materially, You May Still Be Worried, Disturbed Or Unhappy Because Of Circumstances.

The Question Of Real, Lasting World Peace Concerns Human Beings, So Basic Human Feelings Are Also At Its Roots. Through Inner Peace, Genuine World Peace Can Be Achieved. In This The Importance Of Individual Responsibility Is Quite Clear; An Atmosphere Of Peace Must First Be Created Within Ourselves, Then Gradually Expanded To Include Our Families, Our Communities, And Ultimately The Whole Planet.

Peace Must First Be Developed Within An Individual. And I Believe That Love, Compassion, And Altruism Are The Fundamental Basis For Peace. Once These Qualities Are Developed Within An Individual, He Or She Is Then Able To Create An Atmosphere Of Peace And Harmony. This Atmosphere Can Be Expanded And Extended From The Individual To His Family, From The Family To The Community And Eventually To The Whole World.

When We Speak Of A Calm State Of Mind Or Peace Of Mind, We Shouldn't Confuse That With An Insensitive State Of Apathy. Having A Calm Or Peaceful State Of Mind Doesn't Mean Being Spaced Out Or Completely Empty. Peace Of Mind Or A Calm State Of Mind Is Rooted In Affection And Compassion And Is Sensitive And Responsive To Others.

The Whole Purpose Of Religion Is To Facilitate Love And Compassion, Patience, Tolerance, Humility, And Forgiveness.

There Are So Many Things I Could Say About You But None Of Them Can Describe You Fully. You Are The Beauty I Was Waiting For. The Love Of My Life Of Whom I Dreamed Day And Night.

The Very Purpose Of Our Life Is Happiness, Which Is Sustained By Hope. We Have No Guarantee About The Future, But We Exist In The Hope Of Something Better. Hope Means Keeping Going, Thinking, ‘i Can Do This.’ It Brings Inner Strength, Self-confidence , The Ability To Do What You Do Honestly, Truthfully And Transparently.

During The Day Extend That Attitude To Everyone You Meet. Practice Cherishing The "simplest" Person (clerks, Attendants, Etc) Or People You Dislike.

Of Course, There Are Different Truths On Different Levels. Things Are True Relative To Other Things; "long" And "short" Relate To Each Other, "high" And "low," And So On. But Is There Any Absolute Truth? Something Self-sufficient, Independently True In Itself? I Don't Think So.

Human Beings Are Of Such Nature That They Should Have Not Only Material Facilities But Spiritual Sustenance As Well. Without Spiritual Sustenance, It Is Difficult To Get And Maintain Peace Of Mind.

When We Are Young And Again When We Are Old, We Depend Heavily On The Affection Of Others. Between These Stages We Usually Feel That We Can Do Everything Without Help From Others And That Other People's Affection Is Simply Not Important. But At This Stage I Think It Is Very Important To Keep Deep Human Affection.

Human Potential Is The Same For All. If You Have Will Power, Then You Can Change Anything.

Even More Important Than The Warmth And Affection We Receive, Is The Warmth And Affection We Give. It Is By Giving Warmth And Affection, By Having A Genuine Sense Of Concern For Others, In Other Words Through Compassion, That We Gain The Conditions For Genuine Happiness. More Important Than Being Loved, Therefore, Is To Love.

Continue This Practice No Matter What Happens Or What Anyone Does To You.

Sometimes One Creates A Dynamic Impression By Saying Something, And Sometimes One Creates As Significant An Impression By Remaining Silent.

We Are All Here On This Planet, As It Were, As Tourists. None Of Us Can Live Here Forever. The Longest We Might Live Is A Hundred Years. So While We Are Here We Should Try To Have A Good Heart And To Make Something Positive And Useful Of Our Lives. Whether We Live Just A Few Years Or A Whole Century, It Would Be Truly Regrettable And Sad If We Were To Spend That Time Aggravating The Problems That Afflict Other People, Animals, And The Environment. The Most Important Things Is To Be A Good Human Being.

Learning To Forgive Is Much More Useful Than Merely Picking Up A Stone And Throwing It At The Object Of One's Anger, The More So When The Provocation Is Extreme. For It Is Under The Greatest Adversity That There Exists The Greatest Potential For Doing Good, Both For Oneself And Others.

When I Meet People From Other Cultures I Know That They Too Want Happiness And Do Not Want Suffering, This Allows Me To See Them As Brothers And Sisters.

A Loving Atmosphere In Your Home Is The Foundation For Your Life.

Where Ignorance Is Our Master, There Is No Possibility Of Real Peace.

In Order To Satisfy One Human Stomach, So Many Lives Are Taken Away. We Must Promote Vegetarianism. It Is Extremely Important.

Spiritual Practice . . . Involves, On The One Hand, Acting Out Of Concern For Others' Well-being. On The Other, It Entails Transforming Ourselves So That We Become More Readily Disposed To Do So.

Once Your Mind Is Calm And Full Of Love, There Is No Room For Hatred Or Fear. Others Will Trust You Because Of Your Open Heart.

Democratic Institutions Are Necessary And Very Important, And If I Remained At The Head Of Government, It Could Be An Obstacle To Democratic Practice. Also, If I Were To Remain, Then I Would Have To Join One Of The Parties. If The Dalai Lama Joins One Party, Then That Makes It Hard For The System To Work.

I Don't Know Whether The Universe, With Its Countless Galaxies, Stars And Planets, Has A Deeper Meaning Or Not, But At The Very Least, It Is Clear That We Humans Who Live On This Earth Face The Task Of Making A Happy Life For Ourselves. Therefore, It Is Important To Discover What Will Bring About The Greatest Degree Of Happiness.

Of Course, When I Say That Human Nature Is Gentleness, It Is Not 100 Percent So. Every Human Being Has That Nature, But There Are Many People Acting Against Their Nature, Being False.

Everything You Do Has Some Effect, Some Impact.

In Order To Become Prosperous, A Person Must Initially Work Very Hard, So He Or She Has To Sacrifice A Lot Of Leisure Time.

When The Days Become Longer And There Is More Sunshine, The Grass Becomes Fresh And, Consequently, We Feel Very Happy. On The Other Hand, In Autumn, One Leaf Falls Down And Another Leaf Falls Down. The Beautiful Plants Become As If Dead And We Do Not Feel Very Happy. Why? I Think It Is Because Deep Down Our Human Nature Likes Construction, And Does Not Like Destruction. Naturally, Every Action Which Is Destructive Is Against Human Nature. Constructiveness Is The Human Way. Therefore, I Think That In Terms Of Basic Human Feeling, Violence Is Not Good. Non-violence Is The Only Way.

Follow The Three R's: - Respect For Self. - Respect For Others. - Responsibility For All Your Actions.

On A Daily Basis, You Must Take More Care Of Your Mind Than Just Money, Money, Money!

If There's Good, Strong Evidence From Science That Such And Such Is The Case And This Is Contrary To Buddhism, Then We Will Change.

Any Issue, Including Political, Economic And Religious Activities Human Beings Pursue In This World, Should Be Fully Understood Before We Pass Our Judgement. Therefore, It Is Very Important To Know The Causes. Whatever The Issue, We Should Be Able To See The Complete Picture. This Will Enable Us To Comprehend The Whole Story.

I Feel Many Problems That We Are Facing, Are Man-made Problems, We Have Too Much Emphasis On This Secondary Thing, Forgetting Our Foundation. At Foundation, We Are The Same Human Being And We Are Sharing The Same Planet. Six Billion Human Beings' Future Is My Future And My Future Is Never Separate From The Future Of Six Billion Human Beings.

If You Concern Yourself Mainly With Others, The Broader Your Thinking Becomes, And Life’s Inevitable Difficulties Disturb You Less.

The True Hero Is One Who Conquers His Own Anger And Hatred.

I Think The Problem Is These Basic Sort Of Human Values From Our - From The Beginning, From Birth, Are Not Sort Of Properly Nurtured. So Then Our Mind, Our Brain, Through Education And Also Difference Of Experiences, That Eventually, These Basic Values Or What Are Called Dominant, Not Have The Catching Up Our Intelligence, Experience Growth, That Also Should Grow. Then Our Life Become More Human.

A Compassionate State Of Mind Brings Inner Peace, And Therefore A Healthier Body.

From A Certain Point Of View Our Real Enemy, The True Troublemaker, Is Inside.

For The Moment A Lot Of Attention Is Given To Economic Concerns, And These Problems At Hand Easily Eclipse All Others. But The Remedies Proposed For These Problems All Come Out Of Outmoded Ways Of Thinking... The Remedy? Compassion. The Logical Feeling That We Find In Ourselves If We Search Deeply Enough That Has To Be Exercised Toward All Other Living Creatures.

In Order To Carry A Positive Action We Must Develop Here A Positive Vision.

Change Only Takes Place Through Action, Not Through Meditation And Prayer.

Modern Education Is Premised Strongly On Materialistic Values. It Is Vital That When Educating Our Children's Brains That We Do Not Neglect To Educate Their Hearts, A Key Element Of Which Has To Be The Nurturing Of Our Compassionate Nature.

Wealth Is Not Necessarily A Bad Thing When It Has Been Earned In An Honest Manner And Neither Other Individuals Nor The Environment Suffered For It.

We Need An Approach To Ethics Which Makes No Recourse To Religion And Can Be Equally Acceptable To Those With Faith And Those Without.

Self-rule Means That China Must Stop Its Intensive Effort To Colonize Tibet With Chinese Settlers And Must Allow Tibetans To Hold Responsible Positions In The Government Of Tibet.

Happiness Is The Highest Form Of Health.

Compassion Is Something We Can Count On. Even If We Face Economic Problems And Our Fortunes Decline, We Can Still Share Our Compassion With Our Fellow Human Beings. National And Global Economies Are Subject To Many Ups And Downs, But Through Them All We Can Retain A Compassionate Attitude That Will Carry Us Through.

Mental Happiness Is More Important Than Physical Comfort. Physical Comfort Comes From The Material. But Material Facilities Cannot Provide You With Peace Of Mind.

Every Human Action, Whether It Has Become Positive Or Negative, Must Depend On Motivation.

Those Who Like Myself, Consider Themselves To Be Followers Of Buddha, Should Practice As Much As We Can. To Followers Of Other Religious Traditions, I Would Like To Say, 'please Practice Your Own Religion Seriously And Sincerely.' And To Non-believers, I Request You To Try To Be Warm-hearted. I Ask This Of You Because These Mental Attitudes Actually Bring Us Happiness.

Right From The Moment Of Our Birth, We Are Under The Care And Kindness Of Our Parents, And Then Later On In Our Life When We Are Oppressed By Sickness And Become Old, We Are Again Dependent On The Kindness Of Others. Since At The Beginning And End Of Our Lives We Are So Dependent On Other's Kindness, How Can It Be In The Middle That We Would Neglect Kindness Towards Others?

Whether One Believes In A Religion Or Not, And Whether One Believes In Rebirth Or Not, There Isn't Anyone Who Doesn't Appreciate Kindness And Compassion.

You Must Ask Yourself How Is It You Want To Live Your Life. We Live And We Die, This Is The Truth That We Can Only Face Alone. No One Can Help Us, Not Even The Buddha. So Consider Carefully, What Prevents You From Living The Way You Want To Live Your Life?

Within The Framework Of The Buddhist Path, Reflecting On Suffering Has Tremendous Importance Because -realizing The Nature Of Suffering, You Will Develop Greater Resolve To Put An End To The Causes Of Suffering And The Unwholesome Deeds Which Lead To Suffering. And It Will Increase Your Enthusiasm For Engaging In The Wholesome Actions And Deeds Which Lead To Happiness And Joy.

The Natural Environment Sustains The Life Of All Beings Universally.

Religion, Any Religion, No Matter What Sort Of Wonderful Religion, Never Be Universal. So Now Education Is Universal, So We Have To Sort Of Find Ways And Means Through Education System, From Kindergarten Up To University Level, To Make Awareness These Good Things, The Values, Inner Values.

For Tibetans, The Real Strength Of Our Struggle Is Truth - Not Size, Money, Or Expertise. China Is Much Bigger, Richer, More Powerful Militarily, And Has Much Better Skill In Diplomacy. They Outdo Us In Every Field. But They Have No Justice. We Have Placed Our Whole Faith In Truth And In Justice. We Have Nothing Else, In Principle And In Practice.

Everyone Wants A Happy Life Without Difficulties Or Suffering. We Create Many Of The Problems We Face. No One Intentionally Creates Problems, But We Tend To Be Slaves To Powerful Emotions Like Anger, Hatred And Attachment That Are Based On Misconceived Projections About People And Things. We Need To Find Ways Of Reducing These Emotions By Eliminating The Ignorance That Underlies Them And Applying Opposing Forces.

If Indeed The Qualities Such As Love, Patience, Tolerance, And Forgiveness Are What Happiness Consists In, And If It Is Also True That Compassion, Defined As Concern For Others, Is Both The Source And The Fruit Of These Qualities, Then The More We Are Compassionate, The More We Provide For Our Own Happiness.

Even Modern Medical Researchers Have Come To The Conclusion That Peace Of Mind Is Vital For Good Health.

To Be In Flow Means To Be Totally Absorbed In Whatever One Is Doing At The Moment. It Occurs When One Is Fully Present And Completely Focused On The Task At Hand...flow Can Occur During Any Human Activity, Whether Work Or At Play.

It Is Very Rare Or Almost Impossible That An Event Can Be Negative From All Points Of View.

Suffering Increases Your Inner Strength. Also, The Wishing For Suffering Makes The Suffering Disappear.

Forgiveness Doesn't Mean Forget What Happened. If Something Is Serious And It Is Necessary To Take Counter-measures, You Have To Take Counter-measures.

There Can Be No Peace As Long As There Is Grinding Poverty, Social Injustice, Inequality, Oppression, Environmental Degradation, And As Long As The Weak And Small Continue To Be Trodden By The Mighty And Powerful.

I Don't Want To Convert People To Buddhism - All Major Religions, When Understood Properly, Have The Same Potential For Good.

As Long As We Observe Love For Others And Respect For Their Rights And Dignity In Our Daily Lives, Then Whether We Are Learned Or Unlearned, Whether We Believe In The Buddha Or God, Follow Some Religion Or None At All, As Long As We Have Compassion For Others And Conduct Ourselves With Restraint Out Of A Sense Of Responsibility, There Is No Doubt We Will Be Happy.

It's Not Enough To Be Compassionate. You Must Act.

My Desire To Devolve Authority Has Nothing To Do With A Wish To Shirk Responsibility.

People Once Considered That Religions Were Obsolete And That Material Science Would Solve All Human Problems. Then They Have Become Disillusioned With Materialism And Machinery And Have Realized That Spiritual Sciences Are Also Indispensable For Human Welfare.

Each Of Us In Our Own Way Can Try To Spread Compassion Into People's Hearts. Western Civilizations These Days Place Great Importance On Filling The Human Brain With Knowledge, But No One Seems To Care About Filling The Human Heart With Compassion. This Is What The Real Role Of Religion Is.

As Far As Mental Development Is Concerned, We Should Never Be Complacent. We Can Develop Our Minds Infinitely - There Is No Limitation.

If We Make Consistent Effort, Based On Proper Education, We Can Change The World.

For A Person Who Cherishes Compassion And Love, The Practice Of Tolerance Is Essential, And For That, And Enemy Is Indispinsable. So We Should Be Grateful To Our Enemies, For It Is They Who Can Best Help Us To Develop A Tranquil Mind.

We Have Made A Great Effort To Maintain All Levels Of Buddhist Education; It Has Helped Us Have A Kind Of Renaissance, Really.

Conversion Is Not My Intention. Changing Religion Is Not Easy. You May Develop Some Kind Of Confusion Or Difficulties.

The 20th Century Was The Century Of War And Blood. The 21st Century Is The Century Of Dialogue.

The Way To Overcome Negative Thoughts And Destructive Emotions Is To Develop Opposing, Positive Emotions That Are Stronger And More Powerful.

More Fundamental Than Religion Is Our Basic Human Spirituality. We Have A Basic Human Disposition Towards Love, Kindness And Affection, Irrespective Of Whether We Have A Religious Framework Or Not. When We Nurture This Most Basic Human Resource - When We Set About Cultivating Those Basic Inner Values Which We All Appreciate In Others, Then We Start To Live Spiritually.

We May Be Different Races And Religions But We Are All Part Of The Same Human Family

In Dealing With Those Who Are Undergoing Great Suffering, If You Feel "burnout" Setting In, If You Feel Demoralized And Exhausted, It Is Best, For The Sake Of Everyone, To Withdraw And Restore Yourself. The Point Is To Have A Long-term Perspective.

I Must Have Dialogue With The Chinese Government, And Dialogue Requires Compromise. Therefore, I'm Speaking For Genuine Self-rule, Not For Independence.

When A Problem First Arises, Try To Remain Humble And Maintain A Sincere Attitude, And Be Concerned That The Outcome Is Fair.

With The Realization Of Ones Own Potential And Self-confidence In Ones Ability, One Can Build A Better World. According To My Own Experience, Self-confidence Is Very Important. That Sort Of Confidence Is Not A Blind One; It Is An Awareness Of Ones Own Potential. On That Basis, Human Beings Can Transform Themselves By Increasing The Good Qualities And Reducing The Negative Qualities.

So Long As We Are Under The Control Of Disturbing Emotions, Real Happiness Is Hard To Find.

Inner Disarmament, External Disarmament; These Must Go Together, You See. Peace Is Not Just Mere Absence Of Violence - Genuine Peace Must Start In Each Individual Heart.

Through Constant Familiarity, We Can Definitely Establish New Behavior Patterns, Using Our Tendency To Form Habits To Our Advantage. If We Make A Steady Effort, I Think We Can Overcome Any Form Of Negative Conditioning And Make Positive Changes In Our Lives. But We Need To Remember That Genuine Change Doesn't Happen Overnight.

If You Shift Your Focus From Oneself To Others, And Think More About Others' Well-being And Welfare, It Has An Immediate Liberating Effect.

Look At South Africa, The Former Soviet Union, And The Middle East. They Still Have Many Problems, Setbacks As Well As Breakthroughs, But Basically Changes Have Happened That Were Considered Unthinkable A Decade Ago.

It Is Important That When Pursing Our Own Self-interest We Should Be 'wise Selfish' And Not 'foolish Selfish'. Being Foolish Selfish Means Pursuing Our Own Interests In A Narrow, Shortsighted Way. Being Wise Selfish Means Taking A Broader View And Recognizing That Our Own Long-term Individual Interest Lies In The Welfare Of Everyone. Being Wise Selfish Means Being Compassionate.

Compassion Is The Radicalism Of Our Time.

The Other Is More Social, More Public. When Something Needs To Be Done In The World To Rectify The Wrongs, If One Is Really Concerned With Benefitting Others, One Needs To Be Engaged, Involved.

Through Violence, You May 'solve' One Problem, But You Sow The Seeds For Another.

The Deep Root Of Failure In Our Lives Is To Think, 'oh How Useless And Powerless I Am.' It Is Essential To Think Strongly And Forcefully, 'i Can Do It,' Without Boasting Or Fretting.

External Causes And Conditions Are Responsible For Certain Of Our Experiences Of Happiness And Suffering. Yet We Find That It Is Principally Our Own Feelings, Our Thoughts And Our Emotions, That Really Determine Whether We Are Going To Suffer Or Be Happy.

My Main Hope Is Eventually, In Modern Education Field, Introduce Education About Warm-heartedness, Not Based On Religion, But Based On Common Experience And A Common Sort Of Sense, And Then Scientific Finding.

Unlike Physical Progress, Which Is Subject To Natural Restrictions, The Qualities Of The Mind Can Be Developed Limitlessly.

Infinite Altruism Is The Basis Of Peace And Happiness. If You Want Altruism, You Must Control Hate And You Must Practice Patience. The Main Teachers Of Patience Are Our Enemies.

In The Buddha's Life Story We See The Three Stages Of Practice: Morality Comes First, Then Concentrated Meditation, And Then Wisdom. And We See That The Path Takes Time.

However Capable And Skillful An Individual May Be, Left Alone, He Or She Will Not Survive. When We Are Sick Or Very Young Or Very Old, We Must Depend On The Support Of Others. There Is No Significant Division Between Us And Other People, Because Our Basic Natures Are The Same. If We Wish To Ensure Everyone's Peace And Happiness, We Need To Cultivate A Healthy Respect For The Diversity Of Our Peoples And Cultures, Founded On An Understanding Of This Fundamental Sameness Of All Human Beings.

If You Are Mindful Of Death, It Will Not Come As A Surprise-you Will Not Be Anxious. You Will Feel That Death Is Merely Like Changing Clothes. Consequently, At That Point You Will Be Able To Maintain Your Calmness Of Mind.

There Are Differences Between Us. But It Doesn't Make Sense To Emphasize That, Because My Future And Yours Is Connected With Everyone Else's. So We Have To Take Seriously Our Concern For All Of Humanity. When We Focus On Our Individuality, Humanity Inevitably Suffers. And Once Humanity Suffers, Each One Of Us Will Also Suffer.

Now You Are On The Buddhist Way. Keep Up Your Meditation, As There Is No Instant Illumination. The Mind Moves Slowly Into This. Do Not Become Attached To Your Method. When, In The Course Of Your Meditation, Your Consciousness Will Have Expanded And Been Transformed, You Will Then Recognize That All The Ways Are Valid Ways.

It Is Expressions Of Affection Rather Than Money And Power That Attract Real Friends.

Someone Else's Action Should Not Determine Your Response.

To Foster Inner Awareness, Introspection, And Reasoning Is More Efficient Than Meditation And Prayer.

We Are Social Animals. Others' Suffering Is Ultimately Your Suffering; Their Happiness Is Ultimately Your Happiness.

A Zero Itself Is Nothing, But Without A Zero You Cannot Count Anything; Therefore, A Zero Is Something, Yet Zero.

Use Your Human Intelligence In The Best Way You Can; Transform Your Emotions In A Positive Way.

If You Are Honest, Truthful, And Transparent, People Trust You. If People Trust You, You Have No Grounds For Fear, Suspicion Or Jealousy.

Everyday, Think As You Wake Up, Today I Am Fortunate To Be Alive, I Have A Precious Human Life, I Am Not Going To Waste It.
