If We Use The Brilliant Human Mind In The Wrong Way, It Is Really A Disaster.

Some People Say That The West Has A Cruel History. These People Also May See The Achievements Of Western Countries - In Terms Of The Economy, Education, Health, And Social Achievements - As A Result Of Exploitation Of Poorer Countries, Including Arab Countries. Western Nations Get Rich By Using Resources Such As Arab Oil. Meanwhile, The Countries Supplying Them Raw Materials Remain Poor. Due To Such Injustices, Jealousies Are Created.

Without Changing One's Self, Without Peace In One's Self, World Peace Is Not Possible.

If We Had To Accept The Idea Of An Independent Creator, The Explanations Given In [several Buddhist Texts] Which Completely Refutes The Existence Per Se Of All Phenomena, Would Be Negated.

We Cannot Learn Real Patience And Tolerance From A Guru Or A Friend. They Can Be Practiced Only When We Come In Contact With Someone Who Creates Unpleasant Experiences. According To Shantideva, Enemies Are Really Good For Us As We Can Learn A Lot From Them And Build Our Inner Strength.

There Are Techniques Of Buddhism, Such As Meditation, That Anyone Can Adopt. And, Of Course, There Are Christian Monks And Nuns Who Already Use Buddhist Methods In Order To Develop Their Devotion, Compassion, And Ability To Forgive.

When You Talk You Are Only Repeating Something You Already Know. But, If You Listen You May Learn Something New.

You Must Not Procrastinate. Rather, You Should Make Preparations So That Even If You Did Die Tonight, You Would Have No Regrets. If You Develop An Appreciation For The Uncertainty And Imminence Of Death, Your Sense Of The Importance Of Using Your Time Wisely Will Get Stronger And Stronger.

Religion, Any Religion, No Matter What Sort Of Wonderful Religion, Never Be Universal. So Now Education Is Universal, So We Have To Sort Of Find Ways And Means Through Education System, From Kindergarten Up To University Level, To Make Awareness These Good Things, The Values, Inner Values.

Love And Compassion Are The True Religions To Me. But To Develop This, We Do Not Need To Believe In Any Religion.

We Need More Patience. At A Fundamental Level, We Are The Same Human Brothers And Sisters. Then Forget It. The Human Mind Is Very Strange. Like That.

Genuine Concern

It Is In Everybody's Interest To Seek Those [actions] That Lead To Happiness And Avoid Those Which Lead To Suffering. And Because Our Interests Are Inextricably Linked, We Are Compelled To Accept Ethics As The Indispensable Interface Between My Desire To Be Happy And Yours.

Constructiveness Is The Human Way.

My Desire To Devolve Authority Has Nothing To Do With A Wish To Shirk Responsibility.

It Is Very Important To Generate A Good Attitude, A Good Heart, As Much As Possible. From This, Happiness In Both The Short Term And The Long Term For Both Yourself And Others Will Come.

Some People Get The Impression That Buddhism Talks Too Much About Suffering. In Order To Become Prosperous, A Person Must Initially Work Very Hard, So He Or She Has To Sacrifice A Lot Of Leisure Time. Similarly, The Buddhist Is Willing To Sacrifice Immediate Comfort So That He Or She Can Achieve Lasting Happiness.

May I Examine My Mind In All Actions And As Soon As A Negative State Occurs, Since It Endangers Myself And Others, May I Firmly Face And Avert It.

Basically, The Buddhist Attitude Is That You Should Not Accept Certain Things Through Sheer Faith. And For That You Need A Skeptical Attitude. Buddha Himself Made This Clear To His Followers. He Said You Should Not Accept Those Things I Taught Out Of Respect For Me, But Rather Through Investigation By Yourself.

Our Prime Purpose In Life Is To Serve Others.

A Genuine Transformation That Results From Sustained Concerted Effort Is Long Lasting Because It Has A Firm Foundation.

When The Days Become Longer And There Is More Sunshine, The Grass Becomes Fresh And, Consequently, We Feel Very Happy. On The Other Hand, In Autumn, One Leaf Falls Down And Another Leaf Falls Down. The Beautiful Plants Become As If Dead And We Do Not Feel Very Happy. Why? I Think It Is Because Deep Down Our Human Nature Likes Construction, And Does Not Like Destruction. Naturally, Every Action Which Is Destructive Is Against Human Nature. Constructiveness Is The Human Way. Therefore, I Think That In Terms Of Basic Human Feeling, Violence Is Not Good. Non-violence Is The Only Way.

Self-rule Means That China Must Stop Its Intensive Effort To Colonize Tibet With Chinese Settlers And Must Allow Tibetans To Hold Responsible Positions In The Government Of Tibet.

All Major Religious Traditions Carry Basically The Same Message, That Is Love, Compassion And Forgiveness The Important Thing Is They Should Be Part Of Our Daily Lives.

The Development Of A Kind Heart, Or Feeling Of Closeness For All Human Beings, Does Not Involve Any Of The Kind Of Religiosity We Normally Associate With It...it Is For Everyone, Irrespective Of Race, Religion Or Any Political Affiliation.

My Faith Helps Me Overcome Such Negative Emotions And Find My Equilibrium.

A Mind Committed To Compassion Is Like An Overflowing Reservoir - A Constant Source Of Energy, Determination, And Kindness.

Without Inner Peace It Is Impossible To Have World Peace.

For Change To Happen In Any Community, The Initiative Must Come From The Individual.

The More You Think About Your Own Self, The More Self-centred You Are, The More Trouble Even Small Problems Can Create In Your Mind. The Stronger Your Sense Of 'i', The Narrower The Scope Of Your Thinking Becomes; Then Even Small Obstacles Become Unbearable. On The Other Hand, If You Concern Yourself Mainly With Others, The Broader Your Thinking Becomes, And Life's Inevitable Difficulties Disturb You Less.

If You Think You Are Too Small To Make A Difference, Try Sleeping With A Mosquito.

As Human Beings We Have The Same Experience Of Destructive And Constructive Emotions. We Also Have A Human Mind Capable Of Developing Wisdom. We All Have The Same Buddha Nature.

Any Issue, Including Political, Economic And Religious Activities Human Beings Pursue In This World, Should Be Fully Understood Before We Pass Our Judgement. Therefore, It Is Very Important To Know The Causes. Whatever The Issue, We Should Be Able To See The Complete Picture. This Will Enable Us To Comprehend The Whole Story.

Our Visit To This Planet Is Short, So We Should Use Our Time Meaningfully, Which We Can Do By Helping Others Wherever Possible. And If We Cannot Help Others, At Least We Should Try Not To Create Pain And Suffering For Them.

A Zero Itself Is Nothing, But Without A Zero You Cannot Count Anything; Therefore, A Zero Is Something, Yet Zero.

The Great Benefit Of Science Is That It Can Contribute Tremendously To The Alleviation Of Suffering At The Physical Level, But It Is Only Through The Cultivation Of The Qualities Of The Human Heart And The Transformation Of Our Attitudes That We Can Begin To Address And Overcome Our Mental Suffering...

If We Can Cultivate A Concern For Others, Keeping In Mind The Oneness Of Humanity, We Can Build A More Compassionate World.

There Are Only Two Days In The Year That Nothing Can Be Done. One Is Called Yesterday And The Other Is Called Tomorrow. Today Is The Right Day To Love, Believe, Do And Mostly Live.

Just One Small Positive Thought In The Morning Can Change Your Whole Day.

The Mind Is Key. If Anything Should Be Considered A God, So To Speak, It Is The Mind, Not Money. A Healthy Positive Mind Is The Utmost Priority. But If We Were To Reverse The Order Of These Priorities, What Would Happen? I Find It Hard To Imagine How A Person With Great Wealth, Bad Health, No Friends, And No Peace Of Mind Could Feel Even Slightly Happy.

It Is My Fundamental Conviction That Compassion - The Natural Capacity Of The Human Heart To Feel Concern For And Connection With Another Human Being - Constitutes A Basic Aspect Of Our Nature Shared By All Human Beings, As Well As Being The Foundation Of Our Happiness. All Ethical Teachings, Whether Religious Or Nonreligious, Aim To Nurture This Innate And Precious Quality, To Develop It And To Perfect It.

It Is Not Enough Simply To Wish That Love And Compassion Should Increase In Us. We Need To Make A Sustained Effort, Again And Again, To Cultivate The Positive Aspects Within Us - And The Key Here Is Constant Familiarity. The Nature Of Human Thoughts And Emotions Is Such That The More You Engage In Them, The More You Consciously Develop Them, The More Powerful They Become.

Peace Of Mind Is The Basis Of A Healthy Body And A Healthy Mind; So Peace Of Mind, A Calm Mind, Is Very, Very Important.

Feelings Of Anger, Bitterness, And Hate Are Negative. If I Kept Those Inside Me, They Would Spoil My Body And My Health. The Are Of No Use.

A Mind Wishing To Benefit Other People And Other Sentient Beings Is The Very Basis Of Peace And Happiness.

The Truly Good Gaze Upon Everything With Love And Understanding.

When We Speak Of A Calm State Of Mind Or Peace Of Mind, We Shouldn't Confuse That With An Insensitive State Of Apathy. Having A Calm Or Peaceful State Of Mind Doesn't Mean Being Spaced Out Or Completely Empty. Peace Of Mind Or A Calm State Of Mind Is Rooted In Affection And Compassion And Is Sensitive And Responsive To Others.

One Who Is Caught In Thought Loses One's Original Nature. All He Knows Are Words And Descriptions. When He Sees The Actual Thing, He Fails To Perceive It.

Internal Peace Is An Essential First Step To Achieving Peace In The World. How Do You Cultivate It? It's Very Simple. In The First Place By Realizing Clearly That All Mankind Is One, That Human Beings In Every Country Are Members Of One And The Same Family.

Once You Encourage The Thought Of Compassion In Your Mind, Once It Becomes Active, Then Your Attitude Towards Others Changes Automatically.

On Every Level Of Human Life, Compassion Is The Key Thing.

If Your Heart Has Peace, Nothing Can Disturb You.

Although We Are All The Same In Not Wanting Problems And Wanting A Peaceful Life, We Tend To Create A Lot Of Problems For Ourselves. Encountering Those Problems, Anger Develops And Overwhelms Our Mind, Which Leads To Violence. A Good Way To Counter This And To Work For A More Peaceful World Is To Develop Concern For Others. Then Our Anger, Jealousy And Other Destructive Emotions Will Naturally Weaken And Diminish.

You're Happy When You Help Others Become Happy.

Once You Have A Genuine Sense Of Concern For Others, There’s No Room For Cheating, Bullying Or Exploitation.

Tragedy Should Be Utilized As A Source Of Strength.

Painful Experiences

I Love Smiles. That Is A Fact. How To Develop Smiles? There Are A Variety Of Smiles. Some Smiles Are Sarcastic. Some Smiles Are Artificial-diplomatic Smiles. These Smiles Do Not Produce Satisfaction, But Rather Fear Or Suspicion. But A Genuine Smile Gives Us Hope, Freshness. If We Want A Genuine Smile, Then First We Must Produce The Basis For A Smile To Come.

True Happiness Comes From Having A Sense Of Inner Peace And Contentment, Which In Turn Must Be Achieved By Cultivating Altruism, Love And Compassion, And By Eliminating Anger, Selfishness And Greed.

Many Of The Earth's Habitats, Animals, Plants, Insects And Even Micro-organisms That We Know To Be Rare May Not Be Known At All By Future Generations. We Have The Capability And The Responsibility To Act; We Must Do So Before It Is Too Late.

Although Individuals May Be Highly Intelligent, They Are Sometimes Dogged By Skepticism And Doubts. They Are Clever, But They Tend To Be Hesitant And Skeptical And Are Never Really Able To Settle Down. These People Are The Least Receptive.

You Can Develop The Right Attitude Toward Others If You Have Kindness, Love And Respect For Them, And A Clear Realization Of The Oneness Of All Human Beings.

From A Certain Point Of View Our Real Enemy, The True Troublemaker, Is Inside.

If The Work Is Worthwhile, Then Whether We Can Complete It Or Not, It's Worth Making The Attempt. That's Why Courage Is Important.

I'd Rather Be Kind Than Right. You Can Always Be Kind.

If Each Of Us Can Learn To Relate To Each Other More Out Of Compassion, With A Sense Of Connection To Each Other And A Deep Recognition Of Our Common Humanity, And More Important, To Teach This To Our Children, I Believe That This Can Go A Long Way In Reducing Many Of The Conflicts And Problems That We See Today.

The Very Purpose Of Our Life Is To Seek Happiness.

We May Now Have Reached A Point Where This Gap In Our Make-up Has Become Unsustainable; Partly Because What In The Past Would Have Counted As Material Plenty Has Become The Norm For The Majority In Much Of The World; And Partly Because The Slow Retreat Of Religion That Coincided With The Spread Of A Capitalist Economy Has Left A Gaping Hole In Millions Of People's Lives. Some Consider Me As A Living Buddha. That's Nonsense. That's Silly. That's Wrong. If They Consider Me A Simple Buddhist Monk, However, That's Probably Okay.

Someone Else's Action Should Not Determine Your Response.

Happiness Cannot Come From Hatred Or Anger. Nobody Can Say, 'today I Am Happy Because This Morning I Was Angry.' On The Contrary, People Feel Uneasy And Sad And Say, 'today I Am Not Very Happy, Because I Lost My Temper This Morning.'

The More Adept We Become At Cultivating An Altruistic Attitude, The Happier We Will Feel And The More Comfortable Will Be The Atmosphere Around Us. But If Our Emotions Fluctuate Wildly And We Easily Give In To Hatred And Jealousy, Even Our Friends Will Avoid Us. So Even For People With No Spiritual Beliefs, It Is Important To Have A Peaceful Mind.

Wisdom Is The Best Guide And Faith Is The Best Companion.

In Disagreements With Loved Ones, Deal Only With The Current Situation. Don't Bring Up The Past.

People Have To Learn To Think About Animals In A Different Way, As Sentient Beings Who Love Life And Fear Death. I Urge Everyone Who Can To Adopt A Compassionate Vegetarian Diet.

Look At Children. Of Course They May Quarrel, But Generally Speaking They Do Not Harbor Ill Feelings As Much Or As Long As Adults Do. Most Adults Have The Advantage Of Education Over Children, But What Is The Use Of An Education If They Show A Big Smile While Hiding Negative Feelings Deep Inside? Children Don�t Usually Act In Such A Manner. If They Feel Angry With Someone, They Express It, And Then It Is Finished. They Can Still Play With That Person The Following Day.

Lack Of Understanding Of The True Nature Of Happiness, It Seems To Me, Is The Principal Reason Why People Inflict Sufferings On Others. They Think Either That The Other's Pain May Somehow Be A Cause Of Happiness For Themselves Or That Their Own Happiness Is More Important, Regardless Of What Pain It May Cause. But This Is Shortsighted. No One Truly Benefits From Causing Harm To Another Sentient Being. . . . . In The Long Run Causing Others Misery And Infringing Their Rights To Peace And Happiness Result In Anxiety, Fear, And Suspicion Within Oneself.

We Should Reflect On The Idea That Since The Beginning Of Time Sentient Beings Have Been Mentally Unstable Because They Have Been Slaves Of Delusion, They Lack The Eye Of Wisdom To See The Path Leading To Nirvana And Enlightenment, And They Lack The Necessary Guidance Of A Spiritual Teacher. Moment By Moment They Are Indulging In Negative Actions, Which Will Eventually Bring About Their Downfall.
