I Believe Compassion To Be One Of The Few Things We Can Practice That Will Bring Immediate And Long-term Happiness To Our Lives. I'm Not Talking About The Short-term Gratification Of Pleasures Like Sex, Drugs Or Gambling (though I'm Not Knocking Them), But Something That Will Bring True And Lasting Happiness. The Kind That Sticks.

In Our Concern For Others, We Worry Less About Ourselves. When We Worry Less About Ourselves An Experience Of Our Own Suffering Is Less Intense. What Does This Tell Us? Firstly, Because Our Every Action Has A Universal Dimension, A Potential Impact On Others' Happiness, Ethics Are Necessary As A Means To Ensure That We Do Not Harm Others. Secondly, It Tells Us That Genuine Happiness Consists In Those Spiritual Qualities Of Love, Compassion, Patience, Tolerance And Forgiveness And So On. For It Is These Which Provide Both For Our Happiness And Others' Happiness.

Reason Well From The Beginning And Then There Will Never Be Any Need To Look Back With Confusion And Doubt.

I Believe That The Time Has Come For Women To Take More Active Roles In All Domains Of Human Society, In An Age In Which Education And The Capacities Of The Mind, Not Physical Strength, Define Leadership. This Could Help Create A More Equitable And Compassionate Society.

I Truly Believe That Compassion Provides The Basis Of Human Survival.

Self Satisfaction Alone Cannot Determine If A Desire Or Action Is Positive Or Negative. The Demarcation Between A Positive And A Negative Desire Or Action Is Not Whether It Gives You A Immediate Feeling Of Satisfaction, But Whether It Ultimately Results In Positive Or Negative Consequences.

Inner Peace Is The Key: If You Have Inner Peace, The External Problems Do Not Affect Your Deep Sense Of Peace And Tranquility... Without This Inner Peace, No Matter How Comfortable Your Life Is Materially, You May Still Be Worried, Disturbed Or Unhappy Because Of Circumstances.

Laughing In Full Abandonment Is Very Good For Your Health.

Whether We Consider The Individual, Family, Local, National Or International Level, Peace Must Arise From Inner Peace. For Example, Making Prayers For Peace While Continuing To Harbor Anger Is Futile. Training The Mind And Overcoming Your Anger Is Much More Effective Than Mere Prayer. Anger, Hatred And Jealousy Never Solve Problems, Only Affection, Concern And Respect Can Do That.

It Is Natural That We Face Obstacles In Pursuit Of Our Goals. But If We Remain Passive, Making No Effort To Solve The Problems We Meet, Conflicts Will Arise And Hindrances Will Grow. Transforming These Obstacles Into Opportunities Is A Challenge To Our Human Ingenuity.

Overcoming Negative Tendencies And Enhancing Positive Potential Are The Very Essence Of The Spiritual Path.

The Proper Use Of Our Intelligence And Knowledge Is To Effect Changes From Within To Develop A Good Heart.

If Someone Does Not Smile At You, Be Generous And Offer Your Own Smile. Nobody Needs A Smile More Than The One That Cannot Smile To Others.

The Buddha Gave Equal Opportunities To Women. But We, Even As Followers Of Buddha, Neglected That.

We Have A Natural Creative Ability And It Is Very Important To Realize This.

Although It Is Difficult To Pinpoint The Physical Base Or Location Of Awareness, It Is Perhaps The Most Precious Thing Concealed Within Our Brains. And It Is Something That The Individual Alone Can Feel And Experience. Each Of Us Cherishes It Highly, Yet It Is Private.

Humans Are Not Machines-we Are Something More. We Have Feeling And Experience. Material Comforts Are Not Sufficient To Satisfy Us. We Need Something Deeper-human Affection.

(because) The Notion Of Absolute Truth Is Difficult To Sustain Outside The Context Of Religion, Ethical Conduct Is Not Something We Engage In Because It Is Somehow Right In Itself But Because, Like Ourselves, All Others Desire To Be Happy And To Avoid Suffering. Given That This Is A Natural Disposition, Shared By All, It Follows That Each Individual Has A Right To Pursue This Goal. Accordingly, I Suggest That One Of The Things Which Determines Whether An Act Is Ethical Or Not Is Its Effect On Others' Experience Or Expectation Of Happiness.

The Highest Happiness Is When One Reaches The Stage Of Liberation, At Which There Is No More Suffering.

The Greater The Force Of Your Compassion, The Greeater Your Resilience In Confronting Hardships.

Our Visit To This Planet Is Short, So We Should Use Our Time Meaningfully, Which We Can Do By Helping Others Wherever Possible. And If We Cannot Help Others, At Least We Should Try Not To Create Pain And Suffering For Them.

Through Difficult Experiences, Life Sometimes Becomes More Meaningful.

I Feel Like My Life Is Something Purposeful. Many People Have Told Me That After They Listen To My Talk, Some Point Which I Made, They Got Certain Ideas And Their Whole Life Is Changed. They Are Happier.

Hardship, In Forcing Us To Exercise Greater Patience And Forbearance In Daily Life, Actually Makes Us Stronger And More Robust. From The Daily Experience Of Hardship Comes A Greater Capacity To Accept Difficulties Without Losing Our Sense Of Inner Calm. Of Course, I Do Not Advocate Seeking Out Hardship As A Way Of Life, But Merely Wish To Suggest That, If You Relate To It Constructively, It Can Bring Greater Inner Strength And Fortitude.

The Mind Must Be Developed By You Alone. There Is No Way For Others To Do The Work And For You To Reap The Results. Reading Someone Else's Blueprint Of Mental Progress Will Not Transfer Its Realizations To You. You Have To Develop Them Yourself.

Peace Has A Great Deal To Do With Warm-heartednes S And Respect For The Lives Of Others, Avoiding Doing Them Harm And Regarding Their Lives As Being As Precious As Our Own. If, On That Basis, We Can Also Be Of Help To Others, So Much The Better.

In The Final Analysis, The Hope Of Every Person Is Simply Peace Of Mind.

Religion, Any Religion, No Matter What Sort Of Wonderful Religion, Never Be Universal. So Now Education Is Universal, So We Have To Sort Of Find Ways And Means Through Education System, From Kindergarten Up To University Level, To Make Awareness These Good Things, The Values, Inner Values.

There Is Nothing I Can't Live Without. I Learned This Attitude When I Was A Child.

Only The Development Of Compassion And Understanding For Others Can Bring Us The Tranquility And Happiness We All Seek.

When Selflessness Is Seen In Objects, The Seed Of Cyclic Existence Is Destroyed.

When A Certain Community Is Destroyed, In Reality It Destroys A Part Of All Of Us. So There Should Be A Clear Recognition That The Entire Humanity Is Just One Family. Any Conflict Within Humanity Should Be Considered As A Family Conflict. We Must Find A Solution Within This Atmosphere.

The Problems We Face Today, Violent Conflicts, Destruction Of Nature, Poverty, Hunger, And So On, Are Human-created Problems Which Can Be Resolved Through Human Effort, Understanding And The Development Of A Sense Of Brotherhood And Sisterhood. We Need To Cultivate A Universal Responsibility For One Another And The Planet We Share.

Religion Does Not Mean Just Precepts, A Temple, Monastery, Or Other External Signs, For These As Well As Hearing And Thinking Are Subsidiary Factors In Taming The Mind.

I Think Governments Can't Do Much.

So Long As Space Remains So Long As Sentient Beings' Suffering Remains I Will Remain In Order To Help, In Order To Serve.

We Are Working As Hard As We Can; We Are Preparing Ourselves As Carefully As We Can; We Fully Intend To Make Our Contribution To The World In The Coming Century.

Look At Children... If They Feel Angry With Someone, They Express It, And Then It Is Finished. They Can Still Play With That Person The Following Day.

Not To Identify Oneself With Something, Or To Associate Things With The 'me,' And To See That The Idea That There Is A 'me,' Which Is Distinct From Things, Is A Delusion.

The Chinese Government Wants Me To Say That For Many Centuries Tibet Has Been Part Of China. Even If I Make That Statement, Many People Would Just Laugh. And My Statement Will Not Change Past History. History Is History.

Dangerous Consequences Will Follow When Politicians And Rulers Forget Moral Principles. Whether We Believe In God Or Karma, Ethics Is The Foundation Of Every Religion.

Ageing Destroys Youth, Sickness Destroys Health, Degeneration Of Life Destroys All Excellent Qualities And Death Destroys Life. Even If You Are A Great Runner, You Cannot Run Away From Death. You Cannot Stop Death With Your Wealth, Through Your Magic Performances Or Recitation Of Mantras Or Even Medicines. Therefore, It Is Wise To Prepare For Your Death.

Be Gentle With The Earth.

The Creation Of A More Peaceful And Happier Society Has To Begin From The Level Of The Individual, And From There It Can Expand To One's Family, To One's Neighborhood, To One's Community And So On.

Whether We Live Just A Few Years Or A Whole Century, It Would Be Truly Regrettable And Sad If We Were To Spend That Time Aggravating The Problems That Afflict Other People, Animals, And The Environment. The Most Important Things Is To Be A Good Human Being.

But When It Comes To Democratic Political Parties, I Prefer That Monks And Nuns Not Join Them - In Order To Ensure Proper Democratic Practice.

Cats, Dogs, And Some I Mean, Birds, Many Species Of Mammals, They Also Have The Sort Of Potential To Show Affection Firstly Because Of The Biological Factor.

Peace Does Not Come Through Prayer, We Human Beings Must Create Peace.

Compassion Can Be Roughly Defined In Terms Of A State Of Mind That Is Nonviolent, Nonharming, And Nonaggressive. It Is A Mental Attitude Based On The Wish For Others To Be Free Of Their Suffering And Is Associated With A Sense Of Commitment, Responsibility, And Respect Towards Others.

Everything Is Interconnected. My Interest Is Linked To Everyone Else's. Our Survival And Future Are Linked. Therefore The Destruction Of Your So-called Enemy Is Actually The Destruction Of Your Self.

An Ethical Act Is One Which Does Not Harm Others' Experience Or Expectation Of Happiness.

There Is A True Feminist Movement In Buddhism That Relates To The Goddess Tārā. Following Her Cultivation Of Bodhicitta, The Bodhisattva's Motivation, She Looked Upon The Situation Of Those Striving Towards Full Awakening And She Felt That There Were Too Few People Who Attained Buddhahood As Women. So She Vowed, 'i Have Developed Bodhicitta As A Woman. For All My Lifetimes Along The Path I Vow To Be Born As A Woman, And In My Final Lifetime When I Attain Buddhahood, Then, Too, I Will Be A Woman.'

The Motivation Of All Religious Practice Is Similar: Love, Sincerity, Honesty. The Way Of Life Of Practically All Religious Persons Is Consistent. The Teachings Of Tolerance, Love, And Compassion Are The Same.

In Twenty Years' Time I'll Be Eighty-three, Just An Old Man With A Stick Moving Like A Sloth Bear. While I'm Alive, I Am Fully Committed To Autonomy, And I Am The Person Who Can Persuade The Tibetan People To Accept It.

Even When We Have Physical Hardships, We Can Be Very Happy.

Each Of Us Wants The Best For Our Family And Loved Ones. We All Experience Pain When We Suffer Loss And Joy When We Achieve What We Seek. On This Fundamental Level, Religion, Ethnicity, Culture, And Language Make No Difference.

It Is The Enemy Who Can Truly Teach Us To Practice The Virtues Of Compassion And Tolerance.

We Can Live Without Religion And Meditation, But We Cannot Survive Without Human Affection.

If Scientific Analysis Were Conclusively To Demonstrate Certain Claims In Buddhism To Be False, Then We Must Accept The Findings Of Science And Abandon Those Claims.

The Affection Is Mainly Biological Factor. Then Further Sort Of Strengthening, That Religion Helps.

If You Have Peace Of Mind, When You Meet With Problems And Difficulties They Won’t Disturb Your Inner Peace. You’ll Be Able To Employ Your Human Intelligence More Effectively. But, If Your Mental State Is Disturbed, Full Of Emotion, It Is Very Difficult To Cope With Problems, Because The Mind That Is Full Of Emotion Is Biased, Unable To See Reality. So Whatever You Do Will Be Unrealistic And Naturally Fail.

The Question Is Not To Know What Is The Meaning Of Life, But What Meaning I Can Give To My Life.

Compassion Is Concern Of Others' Well Being.

I Must Have Dialogue With The Chinese Government, And Dialogue Requires Compromise. Therefore, I'm Speaking For Genuine Self-rule, Not For Independence.

True Compassion Is Universal In Scope. It Is Accompanied By A Feeling Of Responsibility.

The Various Features And Aspects Of Human Life, Such As Longevity, Good Health, Success, Happiness, And So Forth, Which We Consider Desirable, Are All Dependent On Kindness And A Good Heart.

Conservation Is Not Merely A Question Of Morality, But A Question Of Our Own Survival.

The Only Way To Fail Is To Quit.

In My Childhood, I Had A Religious Assistant Who Always Told Me, If You Can Really Laugh With Full Abandonment, It's Very Good For Your Health.

Basically, The Buddhist Attitude Is That You Should Not Accept Certain Things Through Sheer Faith. And For That You Need A Skeptical Attitude. Buddha Himself Made This Clear To His Followers. He Said You Should Not Accept Those Things I Taught Out Of Respect For Me, But Rather Through Investigation By Yourself.

To Be Kind, Honest And Have Positive Thoughts; To Forgive Those Who Harm Us And Treat Everyone As A Friend; To Help Those Who Are Suffering And Never To Consider Ourselves Superior To Anyone Else: Even If This Advice Seems Rather Simplistic, Make The Effort Of Seeing Whether By Following It You Can Find Greater Happiness.

Blessings Don’t Come From Outside, But From Within. Whatever Blessings We Receive Are The Result Of Our Own Efforts And Positive Actions.

Delusions Are States Of Mind Which, When They Arise Within Our Mental Continuum, Leave Us Disturbed, Confused And Unhappy. Therefore, Those States Of Mind Which Delude Or Afflict Us Are Called 'delusions.'

Judge Your Success By What You Had To Give Up In Order To Get It.

Continue This Practice No Matter What Happens Or What Anyone Does To You.

We Must Not Lose Our Trust In The Power Of Truth. Everything Is Always Changing In The World.

Do Not Let The Behavior Of Others Destroy Your Inner Peace.

Democratic Institutions Are Necessary And Very Important, And If I Remained At The Head Of Government, It Could Be An Obstacle To Democratic Practice. Also, If I Were To Remain, Then I Would Have To Join One Of The Parties. If The Dalai Lama Joins One Party, Then That Makes It Hard For The System To Work.

If Indeed The Qualities Such As Love, Patience, Tolerance, And Forgiveness Are What Happiness Consists In, And If It Is Also True That Compassion, Defined As Concern For Others, Is Both The Source And The Fruit Of These Qualities, Then The More We Are Compassionate, The More We Provide For Our Own Happiness.

One Interesting Thing About Greed Is That Although The Underlying Motive Is To Seek Satisfaction, The Irony Is That Even After Obtaining The Object Of Your Desire You Are Still Not Satisfied. The True Antidote Of Greed Is Contentment.

If One's Cause Is Supported By Sound Reasoning, There Is No Point In Using Violence. It Is Those Who Have No Motive Other Than Selfish Desire And Who Cannot Achieve Their Goal Through Logical Reasoning Who Rely On Force.

Attachment Constrains Our Vision So That We Are Not Able To See Things From A Wider Perspective.

World Peace Begins With Inner Peace.

Learning To Forgive Is Much More Useful Than Merely Picking Up A Stone And Throwing It At The Object Of One's Anger, The More So When The Provocation Is Extreme. For It Is Under The Greatest Adversity That There Exists The Greatest Potential For Doing Good, Both For Oneself And Others.

It Is Important Not To Allow Ourselves To Be Put Off By The Magnitude Of Others' Suffering. The Misery Of Millions Is Not A Cause For Pity. Rather It Is A Cause For Compassion.

Chairman Mao Once Said That Political Power Comes From The Barrel Of A Gun. He Was Only Partly Right: Power That Comes From The Barrel Of A Gun Can Be Effective Only For A Short Time. In The End, Peoples Love For Truth, Justice, Freedom, And Democracy Will Triumph. No Matter What Governments Do, The Human Spirit Will Always Prevail.

Yet Animals Have No Religion, No Constitution. Basic Nature Has Endowed Them With The Faculty Of Discernment. It Is The Same For Humans.

Yet Even The Rich Have Their Own Kind Of Suffering, Anxiety, Doubt, And Fear. So In Many Cases, Wealthy People Aren't Happy! And Once Those With Material Wealth Encounter Small Difficulties, Their Amount Of Mental Suffering Is Sometimes Bigger Than It Is For Those Who Have Faced Such Difficulties Every Day.

Without Freedom, Creativity Cannot Flourish. The Right To Freedom Is Crucial To Progress In Any Society; And The Context Is Having A Sense Of Global Responsibility.

One Can Be Deceived By Three Types Of Laziness: Of Indolence, Which Is The Wish To Procrastinate; The Laziness Of Inferiority, Which Is Doubting Your Capabilities; And The Laziness That Is Attachment To Negative Actions, Or Putting Great Effort Into Non-virtue.

Developing Love And Compassion And Reducing Anger And Spite Is A Universal Activity Which Requires No Faith In Any Religion Whatsoever
