It Is Difficult To Violently Suppress People In The Long Run, As The Example Of The Soviet Union And The Eastern European Countries Has Shown.

I Have Three Commitments. Number One Commitment Is Promotion Of Human Value. Number Two Commitment Is Promotion Of Race Harmony. Number Three Commitment Is About Tibet. My Retirement Is The Third Commitment. The Previous Two Commitments, To My Death, I Have Committed.

All The World’s Major Religions, With Their Emphasis On Love, Compassion, Patience, Tolerance And Forgiveness, Can And Do Promote Inner Values. But The Reality Of The World Today Is That Grounding Ethics In Religion Is No Longer Adequate. This Is Why I Believe The Time Has Come To Find A Way Of Thinking About Spirituality And Ethics That Is Beyond Religion.

A Great Rock Is Not Disturbed By The Wind; The Mind Of A Wise Man Is Not Disturbed By Either Honor Or Abuse.

If We Wish To Ensure Everyone’s Peace And Happiness We Need To Cultivate A Healthy Respect For The Diversity Of Our Peoples And Cultures, Founded On An Understanding Of This Fundamental Sameness Of All Human Beings

If You Are Mindful Of Death, It Will Not Come As A Surprise-you Will Not Be Anxious. You Will Feel That Death Is Merely Like Changing Clothes. Consequently, At That Point You Will Be Able To Maintain Your Calmness Of Mind.

Spirit Is A Land Of High White Peaks And Glittering Jewel-like Lakes And Flowers. Life Is Sparse And Sounds Travel Great Distances.

Up To Now My Involvement In The Tibetan Freedom Struggle Has Been Part Of My Spiritual Practice, Because The Issues Of The Survival Of The Buddha Teaching And The Freedom Of Tibet Are Very Much Related. In This Particular Struggle, There Is No Problem With Many Monks And Nuns, Including Myself, Joining.

The Most Important Thing Is To Have A Sense Of Responsibility, Commitment, And Concern For Each Of Our Fellow Human Beings.

When We Speak Of A Calm State Of Mind Or Peace Of Mind, We Shouldn't Confuse That With An Insensitive State Of Apathy. Having A Calm Or Peaceful State Of Mind Doesn't Mean Being Spaced Out Or Completely Empty. Peace Of Mind Or A Calm State Of Mind Is Rooted In Affection And Compassion And Is Sensitive And Responsive To Others.

I Call The Light And High Aspects Of My Being Spirit And The Dark And Heavy Aspects Soul. Soul Is At Home In The Deep, Shaded Valleys. Heavy Torpid Flowers Saturated With Black Grow There. The Rivers Flow Like Warm Syrup. They Empty Into Huge Oceans Of Soul. Spirit Is A Land Of High White Peaks And Glittering Jewel-like Lakes And Flowers. Life Is Sparse And Sounds Travel Great Distances. There Is Soul Music, Soul Food, And Soul Love... People Need To Climb The Mountain Not Simple Because It Is There But Because The Soulful Divinity Needs To Be Mated With The Spirit.

Buddhahood Is A State Free Of All Obstructions To Knowledge And Disturbing Emotions. It Is The State In Which The Mind Is Fully Evolved.

One Who Is Caught In Thought Loses One's Original Nature. All He Knows Are Words And Descriptions. When He Sees The Actual Thing, He Fails To Perceive It.

The Key To Genuine Happiness Is In Our Hands. To Think This Way Is To Discover The Essential Values Of Kindness, Brotherly Love And Altruism. The More Clearly We See The Benefits Of These Values, The More We Will Seek To Reject Anything That Opposes Them; In This Way We Will Be Able To Bring About Inner Transformation.

The Greatest Antidote To Insecurity & Sense Of Fear Is Compassion. It Brings One Back To The Basis Of One's Inner Strength.

It Is Not Enough To Be Compassionate. You Must Act. There Are Two Aspects To Action. One Is To Overcome The Distortions And Afflictions Of Your Own Mind, That Is, In Terms Of Calming And Eventually Dispelling Anger. This Is Action Out Of Compassion. The Other Is More Social, More Public. When Something Needs To Be Done In The World To Rectify The Wrongs, If One Is Really Concerned With Benefitting Others, One Needs To Be Engaged, Involved.

People Often Expect The Other Person To Respond First In A Positive Way, Instead Of Taking The Initiative To Create That Possibility. I Feel That's Wrong; It Can Act As A Barrier That Just Promotes A Feeling Of Isolation From Others. To Overcome Feelings Of Isolation And Loneliness, Your Underlying Attitude Makes A Tremendous Difference - Approaching Others With The Thought Of Compassion In Your Mind Is The Best Way.

If We Can Manage To Refrain From Harming Others In Our Everyday Actions And Words, We Can Start To Give More Serious Attention To Actively Doing Good, And This Can Be A Source Of Great Joy And Inner Confidence. We Can Benefit Others Through Our Actions By Being Warm And Generous Toward Them, By Being Charitable, And By Helping Those In Need.

I Do Not Understand Men. They Spend Their Lives To Use Their Health To Make Money And Then They Spend Their Money To Restore Their Health.

There Is A Saying In Tibetan That "at The Door Of The Miserable Rich Man Sleeps The Contented Beggar". The Point Of This Saying Is Not That Poverty Is A Virtue, But That Happiness Does Not Come With Wealth, But From Setting Limits To One's Desires, And Living Within Those Limits With Satisfaction.

If You Want To Change The World, First Try To Improve And Bring About Change Within Yourself. That Will Help Change Your Family. From There It Just Gets Bigger And Bigger. Everything We Do Has Some Effect, Some Impact.

Anger And Hatred Cannot Bring Harmony. The Noble Task Of Arms Control And Disarmament Cannot Be Accomplished By Confrontation And Condemnation. Hostile Attitudes Only Serve To Heat Up The Situation, Whereas A True Sense Of Respect Gradually Cools Down What Otherwise Could Become Explosive. We Must Recognize The Frequent Contradictions Between Short-term Benefit And Long-term Harm.

Black Power If The Motive Is Good, And There Are No Other Possibilities, Then Seen Most Deeply It [violence] Is Nonviolence, Because Its Aim Is To Help Others.

Unless The Direction Of Science Is Guided By A Consciously Ethical Motivation, Especially Compassion, Its Effects May Fail To Bring Benefit. They May Indeed Cause Great Harm.

I Think When Tragic Things Happen It Is On Surface. It Is Like The Ocean. One The Surface A Waves And Sometimes The Wave Is Very Serious And Strong. But It Comes And Goes, Comes And Goes, And Underneath, The Ocean Always Remains Calm. Tibetans Have A Saying: "if Bad News Comes To You Listen Here" (points To The Right Ear) "and Let It Our Here" (points To The Left Ear).

I Only Escaped From Tibet Because I Feared My People Would Resort To Desperate Violence If The Chinese Took Me As Their Prisoner.

It Is Also Possible Within This Lifetime To Enhance The Power Of The Mind, Enabling One To Reaccess Memories From Previous Lives. Such Recollection Tends To Be More Accessible During Meditative Experiences In The Dream State. Once One Has Accessed Memories Of Previous Lives In The Dream State, One Gradually Recalls Them In The Waking State.

When Invitation Come, Then I Inquire Just To See New Place Or Seeing Just The One Sort Of Family, Then Not Much Interest.

We Must Recognize That All Beings Want The Same Thing We Want. This Is The Way To Achieve A True Understanding, Unfettered By Artificial Consideration.

My Belief Is That The Various Religious Traditions Have Great Potential To Increase Compassion, The Sense Of Caring For One Another, And The Spirit Of Reconciliation. However, I Believe That A Human Being, Without Religious Faith, Can Be A Very Good Person - Sincere, A Good Heart, Having A Sense Of Concern For Others - Without Belief In A Particular Religious Faith.

A Disciplined Mind Leads To Happiness, And An Undisciplined Mind Leads To Suffering.

Climate Change Has Been Immense Difficulties Of Pains Or Illness Or Hard Life On This Planet. So Through That Way, You Have Sense Of Concern Of The Well Being, Not Sky, Not Just The Environment Itself.

Look At Children. Of Course They May Quarrel, But Generally Speaking They Do Not Harbor Ill Feelings As Much Or As Long As Adults Do. Most Adults Have The Advantage Of Education Over Children, But What Is The Use Of An Education If They Show A Big Smile While Hiding Negative Feelings Deep Inside? Children Don�t Usually Act In Such A Manner. If They Feel Angry With Someone, They Express It, And Then It Is Finished. They Can Still Play With That Person The Following Day.

The Nature Of Our Motivation Determines The Character Of Our Work.

As Human Beings, We Are Only Able To Survive In Dependence Upon The Co-operation, Help And Kindness Of Other Fellow Humans.

If One's Life Is Simple, Contentment Has To Come.

...it Becomes Clear That, Given Our Diversity, No Single Religion Satisfies All Humanity. ... And Since The Majority Does Not Practice Religion, I Am Concerned To Try To Find A Way To Serve All Humanity Without Appealing To Religious Faith.

When The Days Become Longer And There Is More Sunshine, The Grass Becomes Fresh And, Consequently, We Feel Very Happy. On The Other Hand, In Autumn, One Leaf Falls Down And Another Leaf Falls Down. The Beautiful Plants Become As If Dead And We Do Not Feel Very Happy. Why? I Think It Is Because Deep Down Our Human Nature Likes Construction, And Does Not Like Destruction. Naturally, Every Action Which Is Destructive Is Against Human Nature. Constructiveness Is The Human Way. Therefore, I Think That In Terms Of Basic Human Feeling, Violence Is Not Good. Non-violence Is The Only Way.

Everyone Wants To Be Happy; Happiness Is A Right. And While On A Secondary Level Differences Exist Of Nationality, Faith, Family Background, Social Status And So On, More Important Is That On A Human Level We Are The Same. None Of Us Wants To Face Problems, And Yet We Create Them By Stressing Our Differences. If We See Each Other Just As Fellow Human Beings, There'll Be No Basis For Fighting Or Conflict Between Us.

Rulers Come And Go. It's The People Who Are The Real Rulers Of The Country.

I Hold The View That Death Is Rather Like Changing One's Clothes When They Are Torn And Old. It Is Not An End In Itself. Yet Death Is Unpredictable-you Do Not Know When And Howt It Will Take Place.

At A Personal Level, As A Buddhist Practitioner, I Deliberately Visualize And Think About Death In My Daily Practice. Death Is Not Separated From Our Lives. Due To My Research And Thoughts About Death, I Have Some Guarantee And Some Conviction That It Will Be A Positive Experience.

An Ethical Act Is One Which Does Not Harm Others' Experience Or Expectation Of Happiness.

Once We Have A Firm Practice Of Compassion Our State Of Mind Becomes Stronger Which Leads To Inner Peace, Giving Rise To Self-confidence, Which Reduces Fear. This Makes For Constructive Members Of The Community. Self-centredness On The Other Hand Leads To Distance, Suspicion, Mistrust And Loneliness, With Unhappiness As The Result.

Your Motivation Should Be Sincere And Your Life Should Be Of Benefit To Some People. That Is The Main Thing. Don't Care After My Death.

Individuality Is Very Important For A Full Human Life.

The First Beneficiary Of Compassion Is Always Oneself. When Compassion, Or Warmheartedness, Arises In Us And Our Focus Shifts Away From Our Own Narrow Self-interest, It Is As If We Open An Inner Door. It Reduces Fear, Boosts Confidence And Brings Us Inner Strength. By Reducing Distrust, It Opens Us To Others And Brings Us A Sense Of Connection To Others, And Sense Of Purpose And Meaning In Life.

We Have Made A Great Effort To Maintain All Levels Of Buddhist Education; It Has Helped Us Have A Kind Of Renaissance, Really.

People Assume That Happiness Stems From Collecting Things Outside Of Yourself, Whereas True Happiness Stems From Removing Things From Inside Of Yourself

I Consider Non-violence To Be Compassion In Action. It Doesn’t Mean Weakness, Cowering In Fear, Or Simply Doing Nothing. It Is To Act Without Violence, Motivated By Compassion, Recognising The Rights Of Others.

According To Buddhist Psychology Most Of Our Troubles Stem From Attachment To Things That We Mistakenly See As Permanent.

Universal Responsibility Is The Key To Human Survival. It Is The Best Foundation For World Peace.

Americans Are Interested Because They Are Open-minded. They Have An Education System That Teaches Them To Find Out For Themselves Why Things Are The Way They Are. Open-minded People Tend To Be Interested In Buddhism Because Buddha Urged People To Investigate Things - He Didn't Just Command Them To Believe.

Depression Seems To Be Related To Fear, Anger And Frustration. When You're In A Bad Mood, Even If You Meet With Your Friends, You Don't Take Pleasure In Their Company. But When You're In A Good Mood, Even If Things Go Wrong, You Can Cope With Them Without Difficulty. This Is Why Putting Yourself In A Good Mood, Making A Point Of Developing A Sense Of Loving Kindness Gives You Greater Inner Strength.

The Ultimate Source Of A Happy Life Is Warm-heartedness. This Means Extending To Others The Kind Of Concern We Have For Ourselves. On A Simple Level We Find That If We Have A Compassionate Heart We Naturally Have More Friends. And Scientists Today Are Discovering That While Anger And Hatred Eat Into Our Immune System, Warm-heartedness And Compassion Are Good For Our Health.

Ultimately, The Decision To Save The Environment Must Come From The Human Heart. The Key Point Is A Call For A Genuine Sense Of Universal Responsibility That Is Based On Love, Compassion And Clear Awareness.

Basically, From The Viewpoint Of Real Human Value We Are All The Same.

Some People, Sweet And Attractive, And Strong And Healthy, Happen To Die Young. They Are Masters In Disguise Teaching Us About Impermanence.

I Do Not Judge The Universe.

I Think In Many Ways Narrow Minded-attitudes Lead To Extreme Thinking.

On Love, Not Harming Others, And Respecting All Beings. Even Animals Have These Elements In Their Behavioral Patterns. We Should Start By Observing How Animals Act. They Are Honest And Appreciate It When We Are Honest With Them. If You Present Something Nice To An Animal In One Hand While Hiding A Rope In The Other, The Creature Will Know Your Intention. Yet Animals Have No Religion, No Constitution. Basic Nature Has Endowed Them With The Faculty Of Discernment. It Is The Same For Humans.

Go At Least Once A Year To A Place You've Never Been Before.

Nothing Comes Into Being Without A Cause And When All The Conditions Are Created, There Is Nothing That Can Prevent The Consequence.

We Should Practice By Showing One Another Love And Helping One Another. It Is A Mistake To Pursue Happiness And To Seek To The Avoid Suffering By Deceiving And Humiliating Other People. We Must Try To Achieve Happiness And Eliminate Suffering By Being Good-hearted And Well-behaved.

This Is My Simple Religion. There Is No Need For Temples; No Need For Complicated Philosophy. Our Own Brain, Our Own Heart Is Our Temple; The Philosophy Is Kindness.

One Of The Most Effective Ways To Overcome Anxiety Is To Try To Shift The Focus Of Attention Away From Self And Toward Others. When We Succeed In This, We Find That The Scale Of Our Own Problems Diminishes. This Is Not To Say We Should Ignore Our Own Needs Altogether, But Rather That We Should Try To Remember Others' Needs Alongside Our Own, No Matter How Pressing Ours May Be

When I Talk To A Few Thousand People, I Just Feel I Am Talking To An Old Friend. Like That. I Never Felt Some Kind Of Distance, So Therefore, I Feel One Source Of Happiness. In That Kind Of Atmosphere, My Experience Seems Some Benefit To Some People.

You Are The People Who Are Shaping A Better World. One Of The Secrets Of Inner Peace Is The Practice Of Compassion.

Compassion Is Concern Of Others' Well Being.

Anger, Hatred And Jealousy Never Solve Problems, Only Affection, Concern And Respect Can Do That.

Some Feel That You Lose Your Independence If You Don't Let Your Mind Just Wander Where It Wants To, If You Try To Control It. But That Is Not The Case. If Your Mind Is Proceeding In The Correct Way, One Already Has The Correct Opinion. But If Your Mind Is Proceeding In An Incorrect Way, Then It's Necessary, Definitely, To Exercise Control.

There Is A Common Perception That Compassion Is, If Not Actually An Impediment, At Least Irrelevant To Professional Life. If You Have A Particular Faith Or Religion, That Is Good. But You Can Survive Without It.

Without Mutual Tolerance Emerging As The Foundation, Terrible Situations Like Those Of Tibet And Sri Lanka, Bosnia And Rwanda, Can Never Be Effectively Improved.

If The Situation Was Such That There Was Only One Learned Lama Or Genuine Practitioner Alive, A Person Whose Death Would Cause The Whole Of Tibet To Lose All Hope Of Keeping Its Buddhist Way Of Life, Then It Is Conceivable That In Order To Protect That One Person It Might Be Justified For One Or 10 Enemies To Be Eliminated If There Was No Other Way.

All Living Beings Have Experience Of Pleasure And Pain, And We Are Among Them. What Makes Human Beings Different Is That We Have A Powerful Intelligence And A Much Greater Ability To Achieve Happiness And Avoid Suffering. Real Happiness And Friendship Come Not From Money Or Even Knowledge, But From Warm-heartednes S. Once We Recognize This We Will Be More Inclined To Cultivate It.

Fear, Hatred, And Suspicion Narrow Your Mind - Compassion Opens It.

Of Course, When I Say That Human Nature Is Gentleness, It Is Not 100 Percent So. Every Human Being Has That Nature, But There Are Many People Acting Against Their Nature, Being False.

Real Affection Comes From The Face. Those Political Leaders, When They Meet, They Are Always Hugging, But Not Very Genuine. Deep, Sincerity Comes From Face And Eye.

In Buddhism, Both Learning And Practice Are Extremely Important, And They Must Go Hand In Hand. Without Knowledge, Just To Rely On Faith, Faith, And More Faith Is Good But Not Sufficient. So The Intellectual Part Must Definitely Be Present. At The Same Time, Strictly Intellectual Development Without Faith And Practice, Is Also Of No Use. It Is Necessary To Combine Knowledge Born From Study With Sincere Practice In Our Daily Lives. These Two Must Go Together.

Delusions Are States Of Mind Which, When They Arise Within Our Mental Continuum, Leave Us Disturbed, Confused And Unhappy. Therefore, Those States Of Mind Which Delude Or Afflict Us Are Called 'delusions.'

In Some Respects I Have Been The Most Unlucky Because I Have Spent More Time Living As A Refugee Outside My Country Than I Have Spent In Tibet. On The Other Hand, It Has Been Very Rewarding For Me To Live In A Democracy And To Learn About The World In A Way That We Tibetans Had Never Known Before.

Only Through Kindness And Love Can Peace Of Mind Be Achieved.

Learning Is The First Step In Making Positive Changes Within Yourself. Other Factors Are Conviction, Determination, Action & Effort. Learning & Education Help Develop Conviction About The Need To Change & Increase Your Commitment. Conviction Then Develops Into Determination. Next, Strong Determination Leads To Action: A Sustained Effort To Implement The Changes. This Final Factor Of Effort Is Critical.

The Highest Happiness Is When One Reaches The Stage Of Liberation, At Which There Is No More Suffering.

Peace Is Not Just The Mere Absence Of Violence Or Disturbance. It's When There Is A Possibility Of Conflict, But You Deliberately Avoid Violence And Adopt Methods To Solve The Problem Through Peaceful Means. That Is Real Peace.

Neither Social Conditioning Nor Education Nor Ideology Affects This. >from The Very Core Of Our Being, We Simply Desire Contentment. Therefore, It Is Important To Discover What Will Bring About The Greatest Degree Of Happiness.

The World Has Also Learned That Economic Growth, By Itself, Cannot Close The Gap Between Rich And Poor.

If One Assumes A Humble Attitude, One's Own Good Qualities Will Increase. Whereas If One Is Proud, One Will Become Jealous Of Others, One Will Look Down On Others, And Due To That There Will Be Unhappiness In Society.

Our Ancient Experience Confirms At Every Point That Everything Is Linked Together, Everything Is Inseparable.

It Is In Everybody's Interest To Seek Those [actions] That Lead To Happiness And Avoid Those Which Lead To Suffering. And Because Our Interests Are Inextricably Linked, We Are Compelled To Accept Ethics As The Indispensable Interface Between My Desire To Be Happy And Yours.

A Sense Of Contentment Is Crucial To Being Happy. Physical Health, Material Wealth And Friends Contribute To This, But Contentment Governs Our Relations With Them All.

Despite All Philosophical Differences, All Major World Religions Have The Same Potential To Create Good Human Beings.

Today Different Ethnic Groups And Different Nations Come Together Due To Common Sense.

Through Constant Familiarity, We Can Definitely Establish New Behavior Patterns, Using Our Tendency To Form Habits To Our Advantage. If We Make A Steady Effort, I Think We Can Overcome Any Form Of Negative Conditioning And Make Positive Changes In Our Lives. But We Need To Remember That Genuine Change Doesn't Happen Overnight.

We Must Recognize That The Suffering Of One Person Or One Nation Is The Suffering Of Humanity.

Better Grounded Emotionally Through Patience, We Become Stronger Mentally And Spiritually, And Tend To Be Healthier Physically.

Basically, A Human Being Is A Social Animal. So, If You Create Some Short Moment Of Happiness For People, You Get Deep Satisfaction.

Happiness Arises As A Result Of Different Causes And Conditions. If You Harm Someone Out Of Anger, You May Feel Some Superficial Satisfaction, But Deep Down You Know It Was Wrong. Your Confidence Will Be Undermined. However, If You Have An Altruistic Attitude, You’ll Feel Comfortable And Confident In The Presence Of Others.

More Fundamental Than Religion Is Our Basic Human Spirituality. We Have A Basic Human Disposition Towards Love, Kindness And Affection, Irrespective Of Whether We Have A Religious Framework Or Not. When We Nurture This Most Basic Human Resource - When We Set About Cultivating Those Basic Inner Values Which We All Appreciate In Others, Then We Start To Live Spiritually.

It Is The State Of Mind Of The Person Wielding The Instrument That Determines To What End It Will Be Put.

Conversion Is Not My Intention. Changing Religion Is Not Easy. You May Develop Some Kind Of Confusion Or Difficulties.
