Don't Try To Use What You Learn From Buddhism To Be A Buddhist; Use It To Be A Better Whatever-you-al Ready-are.

I Am Just One Human Being.

When I Look At Birds And Animals, Their Survival Is Without Rules, Without Conditions, Without Organization. But Mothers Take Good Care Of Their Offspring. That's Nature. In Human Beings Also, Parents - Particularly Mothers - And Children Have A Special Bond. Mother's Milk Is A Sign Of This Affection. We Are Created That Way. The Child's Survival Is Entirely Dependent On Someone Else's Affection. So, Basically, Each Individual's Survival Or Future Depends On Society. We Need These Human Values.

From The Viewpoint Of Absolute Truth, What We Feel And Experience In Our Ordinary Daily Life Is All Delusion. Of All The Various Delusions, The Sense Of Discrimination Between Oneself And Others Is The Worst Form, As It Creates Nothing But Unpleasantness For Both Sides. If We Can Realize And Meditate On Ultimate Truth, It Will Cleanse Our Impurities Of Mind And Thus Eradicate The Sense Of Discrimination. This Will Help To Create True Love For One Another. The Search For Ultimate Truth Is, Therefore, Vitally Important.

This Is My Simple Religion. There Is No Need For Temples; No Need For Complicated Philosophy. Our Own Brain, Our Own Heart Is Our Temple; The Philosophy Is Kindness.

Attachment Constrains Our Vision So That We Are Not Able To See Things From A Wider Perspective.

We Need To Understand How Destructive Emotions Affect Us And Constructive Emotions Can Help Us, So That We Can Maintain Our Peace Of Mind.

True Friendship Develops Not As A Result Of Money Or Power But On The Basis Of Genuine Human Affection.

Happiness That Depends Mainly On Physical Pleasure Is Unstable; One Day It's There, The Next Day It May Not Be.

I'm Not Talking About The Short-term Gratification Of Pleasures Like Sex, Drugs Or Gambling (though I'm Not Knocking Them), But Something That Will Bring True And Lasting Happiness. The Kind That Sticks.

Out Of 6 Billion Humans, The Troublemakers Are Just A Handful.

On The Other Hand, When There Is No Sound Reason That Concessions Should Be Made To You But Mainly Your Own Desire, Then Reason Cannot Work And You Have To Rely On Force. Thus Using Force Is Not A Sign Of Strength But Rather A Sign Of Weakness.

Love Is Wanting Others To Be Happy.

All Beings Come From A Mother's Womb. We Should Have A Clear Realization Of The Oneness Of All Humanity.

There Are Techniques Of Buddhism, Such As Meditation, That Anyone Can Adopt. And, Of Course, There Are Christian Monks And Nuns Who Already Use Buddhist Methods In Order To Develop Their Devotion, Compassion, And Ability To Forgive.

Scientists Are Coming To Recognise The Effects Of The Mind On Physical Health. The Sense Of Relaxation Associated With Inner Peace Involves Not Only Being Physically At Ease. Most Adults Have The Advantage Of Education Over Children, But What Is The Use Of An Education If They Show A Big Smile While Hiding Negative Feelings Deep Inside? Children Don�t Usually Act In Such A Manner. If They Feel Angry With Someone, They Express It, And Then It Is Finished. They Can Still Play With That Person The Following Day.

I Have Been Clear In My Position For Quite A While, But The Chinese Have Not Responded. Therefore, We Are Now In The Process Of Holding A Referendum On Our Policy Among All The Tibetan Community In Exile And Even Inside Tibet, To Check Whether The Majority Thinks We Are On The Right Track.

I Am Not Promoting Buddhism. I Am Promoting Human Values.

Choose To Be Optimistic, It Feels Better.

If A Person's Basic State Of Mind Is Serene And Calm, Then It Is Possible For This Inner Peace To Overwhelm A Painful Physical Experience. On The Other Hand, If Someone Is Suffering From Depression, Anxiety, Or Any Form Of Emotional Distress, Then Even If He Or She Happens To Be Enjoying Physical Comforts, He Will Not Really Be Able To Experience The Happiness That These Could Bring.

Use Your Human Intelligence In The Best Way You Can; Transform Your Emotions In A Positive Way.

A Positive State Of Mind Is Not Merely Good For You, It Benefits Everyone With Whom You Come Into Contact, Literally Changing The World.

Violence Will Only Increase The Cycle Of Violence.

If You Have Peace Of Mind, When You Meet With Problems And Difficulties They Won’t Disturb Your Inner Peace. You’ll Be Able To Employ Your Human Intelligence More Effectively. But, If Your Mental State Is Disturbed, Full Of Emotion, It Is Very Difficult To Cope With Problems, Because The Mind That Is Full Of Emotion Is Biased, Unable To See Reality. So Whatever You Do Will Be Unrealistic And Naturally Fail.

I Do Not See Any Reason Why Animals Should Be Slaughtered To Serve As Human Diet When There Are So Many Substitutes. After All, Man Can Live Without Meat. It Is Only Some Carnivorous Animals That Have To Subsist On Flesh. Killing Animals For Sport, For Pleasure, For Adventures, And For Hides And Furs Is A Phenomenon Which Is At Once Disgusting And Distressing. There Is No Justification In Indulging In Such Acts Of Brutality . . . Life Is As Dear To A Mute Creature As It Is To A Man. Just As One Wants Happiness And Fears Pain, Just As One Wants To Live And Not To Die, So Do Other Creatures.

Peace Is The Only Way For The Survival Of Humanity

Smile If You Want A Smile From Another Face.

We Share The Earth Not Only With Our Fellow Human Beings, But With All The Other Creatures.

The Very Purpose Of Religion Is To Control Yourself, Not To Criticise Others.

Basically, From The Viewpoint Of Real Human Value We Are All The Same.

Those Who Don't Have A Life Filled With Luxury May Have A Home Filled With Compassion, Based On Their Choice To Be Content And To Practice Self-discipline. Even When We Have Physical Hardships, We Can Be Very Happy.

The Only Way To Fail Is To Quit.

Through Violence, You May 'solve' One Problem, But You Sow The Seeds For Another.

Basically, Therefore, We Should Approach Others Openly, Recognizing Each Person As Another Human Being Just Like Ourselves. There Is Not Much Difference Between Us All.

There Should Be Pluralism - The Concept Of Many Religions, Many Truths. But We Must Also Be Careful Not To Become Nihilistic.

The Real Test Of Compassion Is Not What We Say In Abstract Discussions But How We Conduct Ourselves In Daily Life.

Today, Due To The Massive Chinese Population Transfer, The Nation Of Tibet Truly Faces The Threat Of Extinction, Along With Its Unique Cultural Heritage Of Buddhist Spirituality.

China Has To Go Along With World Trends. That's Democracy, Liberty, Individual Freedom. China Sooner Or Later Has To Go That Way. It Cannot Go Backward.

Responsibility Does Not Only Lie With The Leaders Of Our Countries Or With Those Who Have Been Appointed Or Elected To Do A Particular Job. It Lies With Each Of Us Individually.

I Feel That The Essence Of Spiritual Practice Is Your Attitude Toward Others. When You Have A Pure, Sincere Motivation, Then You Have Right Attitude Toward Others Based On Kindness, Compassion, Love And Respect.

If The Basic Human Nature Was Aggressive, We Would Have Been Born With Animal Claws & Huge Teeth -- But Ours Are Very Short, Very Pretty, Very Weak! That Means We Are Not Well Equipped To Be Aggressive Beings. Even The Size Of Our Mouth Is Very Small. So I Think The Basic Nature Of Human Beings Should Be Gentle.

The Most Important Benefit Of Patience Consists In The Way It Acts As A Powerful Antidote To The Affliction Of Anger.

Compassion Is The Wish To See Others Free From Suffering.

The Many Factors Which Divide Us Are Actually Much More Superficial Than Those We Share. Despite All Of The Things That Differentiate Us - Race, Language, Religion, Gender, Wealth And So On - We Are All Equal Concerning Our Fundamental Humanity.

Friends, Genuine Friends, Are Attracted By A Warm Heart, Not Money, Not Power. A Genuine Friend Considers You As Just Another Human Being, As A Brother Or Sister, And Shows Affection On That Level, Regardless Of Whether You Are Rich Or Poor, Or In A High Position; That Is A Genuine Friend.

I Am Sometimes Sad When I Hear The Personal Stories Of Tibetan Refugees Who Have Been Tortured Or Beaten. Some Irritation, Some Anger Comes. But It Never Lasts Long. I Always Try To Think At A Deeper Level, To Find Ways To Console.

There Is A True Feminist Movement In Buddhism That Relates To The Goddess Tārā. Following Her Cultivation Of Bodhicitta, The Bodhisattva's Motivation, She Looked Upon The Situation Of Those Striving Towards Full Awakening And She Felt That There Were Too Few People Who Attained Buddhahood As Women. So She Vowed, 'i Have Developed Bodhicitta As A Woman. For All My Lifetimes Along The Path I Vow To Be Born As A Woman, And In My Final Lifetime When I Attain Buddhahood, Then, Too, I Will Be A Woman.'

Happiness Doesn't Always Come From A Pursuit. Sometimes It Comes When We Least Expect It.

I Always Tell People That Religious Institutions And Political Institutions Should Be Separate. So While I'm Telling People This, I Myself Continue With Them Combined. Hypocrisy!

The Source Of Peace Is Within Us; So Also The Source Of War. And The Real Enemy Is Within Us, And Not Outside. The Source Of War Is Not The Existence Of Nuclear Weapons Or Other Arms. It Is The Minds Of Human Beings Who Decide To Push The Button And To Use Those Arms Out Of Hatred, Anger Or Greed.

First One Must Change. I First Watch Myself, Check Myself, Then Expect Changes From Others.

I Believe That The Time Has Come For Women To Take More Active Roles In All Domains Of Human Society, In An Age In Which Education And The Capacities Of The Mind, Not Physical Strength, Define Leadership. This Could Help Create A More Equitable And Compassionate Society.

There Is No Self-interest Completely Unrelated To Others' Interests. Due To The Fundamental Interconnectedness Which Lies At The Heart Of Reality, Your Interest Is Also My Interest. His Holiness Pope John Paul Ii Was A Determined And Deeply Spiritual Minded Person For Whom I Had Great Respect And Admiration. His Experience In Poland, Then A Communist Country, And My Own Difficulties With Communists, Gave Us An Immediate Common Ground

The Greater The Level Of Calmness Of Our Mind, The Greater Our Peace Of Mind, The Greater Our Ability To Enjoy A Happy And Joyful Life.

Genuine Human Friendship Is On The Basis Of Human Affection, Irrespective Of Your Position. Not So Long Ago People Believed In Ideologies, Systems, And Institutions To Save All Societies. Today, They Have Given Up Such Hopes And Have Returned To Relying On The Individual, On Individual Freedom, Individual Initiative, Individual Creativity.

Remember That The Best Relationship Is One In Which Your Love For Each Other Exceeds Your Need For Each Other.

Today, The World Is So Small And So Interdependent That The Concept Of War Has Become Anachronistic, An Outmoded Approach. As A Rule, We Always Talk About Reform And Changes. Among The Old Traditions, There Are Many Aspects That Are Either Ill-suited To Our Present Reality Or Are Counterproductive Due To Their Shortsightedness. These, We Have Consigned To The Dustbin Of History. War Too Should Be Relegated To The Dustbin Of History.

To Develop Patience, You Need Someone Who Willfully Hurts You. Such People Give Us Real Opportunities To Practice Tolerance. They Test Our Inner Strength In A Way That Even Our Guru Cannot. Basically, Patience Protects Us From Being Discouraged.

If You Wish To Experience Peace, Provide Peace For Another. If You Wish To Know That You Are Safe, Cause Another To Know That They Are Safe. If You Wish To Better Understand Seemingly Incomprehensible Things, Help Another To Better Understand. If You Wish To Heal Your Own Sadness Or Anger, Seek To Heal The Sadness Or Anger Of Another.

If We Don't Understand Phenomena, We Are More Likely To Do Things To Harm Ourselves And Others.

This Shows That An Appreciation For Peace Of Mind Is In Our Blood.

Since We Desire The True Happiness That Is Brought About By A Calm Mind, And Such Peace Of Mind Arises Only From Having A Compassionate Attitude, We Need To Make A Concerted Effort To Develop Compassion.

If Your Life Becomes Only A Medium Of Production, Then Many Of The Good Human Values And Characteristics Will Be Lost.

For The Moment A Lot Of Attention Is Given To Economic Concerns, And These Problems At Hand Easily Eclipse All Others. But The Remedies Proposed For These Problems All Come Out Of Outmoded Ways Of Thinking... The Remedy? Compassion. The Logical Feeling That We Find In Ourselves If We Search Deeply Enough That Has To Be Exercised Toward All Other Living Creatures.

If One's Life Is Simple, Contentment Has To Come.

This Generation Has A Responsibility To Reshape The World. Start The Task Even If It Will Not Be Fulfilled In Your Lifetime. Even If It Seems Hopeless Now, Never Give Up. Offer A Positive Vision, With Enthusiasm And Joy, And An Optimistic Outlook.

People Have To Learn To Think About Animals In A Different Way, As Sentient Beings Who Love Life And Fear Death. I Urge Everyone Who Can To Adopt A Compassionate Vegetarian Diet.

For Tibetans, The Real Strength Of Our Struggle Is Truth - Not Size, Money, Or Expertise. China Is Much Bigger, Richer, More Powerful Militarily, And Has Much Better Skill In Diplomacy. They Outdo Us In Every Field. But They Have No Justice. We Have Placed Our Whole Faith In Truth And In Justice. We Have Nothing Else, In Principle And In Practice.
