We Have A Largely Materialistic Lifestyle Characterized By A Materialistic Culture. However, This Only Provides Us With Temporary, Sensory Satisfaction, Whereas Long-term Satisfaction Is Based Not On The Senses But On The Mind. That’s Where Real Tranquility Is To Be Found. And Peace Of Mind Turns Out To Be A Significant Factor In Our Physical Health Too.

Just As Compassion Is The Wish That All Sentient Beings Be Free Of Suffering, Loving-kindness Is The Wish That All May Enjoy Happiness.

Tragedy Should Be Utilized As A Source Of Strength.

The More We Are Concerned For The Well Being Of Others, The Closer We Will Feel To Each Other.

(because) The Notion Of Absolute Truth Is Difficult To Sustain Outside The Context Of Religion, Ethical Conduct Is Not Something We Engage In Because It Is Somehow Right In Itself But Because, Like Ourselves, All Others Desire To Be Happy And To Avoid Suffering. Given That This Is A Natural Disposition, Shared By All, It Follows That Each Individual Has A Right To Pursue This Goal. Accordingly, I Suggest That One Of The Things Which Determines Whether An Act Is Ethical Or Not Is Its Effect On Others' Experience Or Expectation Of Happiness.

I Have Never Been Any Place Where I Was Not First Invited. And Upon Invitation, If I Feel That There Is Potential For Making Some Contribution To Humanity, I Will Comply In Spite Of Being Tired.

The Very Purpose Of Religion Is To Control Yourself, Not To Criticize Others. Rather, We Must Criticize Ourselves. How Much Am I Doing About My Anger? About My Attachment, About My Hatred, About My Pride, My Jealousy? These Are The Things Which We Must Check In Daily Life.

Firstly, As A Buddhist Monk, I Hold That Violence Is Not Good. Secondly, I Am A Firm Believer In The Gandian Ethic Of Passive Resistance. And Thirdly, In Reality, Violence Is Not Our Strength.

Anger And Hatred Are The Real Enemies That We Must Confront And Defeat, Not The 'enemies' Who Appear From Time To Time In Our Lives.

It Is Worthwhile For One To Make An Effort To Achieve Happiness. Just As The Purpose Of A Plant Is To Grow, So It Is That The Main Purpose Of Every Human Being Is To Survive And To Grow Until Death.

Forget The Failures. Keep The Lessons.

We Need To Employ A Secular Approach To Ethics, Secular In The Indian Sense Of Respecting All Religious Traditions And Even The Views Of Non-believers In An Unbiased Way. Secular Ethics Rooted In Scientific Findings, Common Experience And Common Sense Can Easily Be Introduced Into The Secular Education System. If We Can Do That There Is A Real Prospect Of Making This 21st Century An Era Of Peace And Compassion.

From One Point Of View We Can Say That We Have Human Bodies And Are Practicing The Buddha's Teachings And Are Thus Much Better Than Insects. But We Can Also Say That Insects Are Innocent And Free From Guile, Where As We Often Lie And Misrepresent Ourselves In Devious Ways In Order To Achieve Our Ends Or Better Ourselves. From This Perspective, We Are Much Worse Than Insects.

We Cannot Hope To Die Peacefully If Our Lives Have Been Full Of Violence, Or If Our Minds Have Mostly Been Agitated By Emotions Like Anger, Attachment, Or Fear. So If We Wish To Die Well, We Must Learn How To Live Well: Hoping For A Peaceful Death, We Must Cultivate Peace In Our Mind, And In Our Way Of Life.

True Happiness Comes From Having A Sense Of Inner Peace And Contentment, Which In Turn Must Be Achieved By Cultivating Altruism, Love And Compassion, And By Eliminating Anger, Selfishness And Greed.

I'd Rather Be Kind Than Right. You Can Always Be Kind.

The Most Important Thing Is To Have A Sense Of Responsibility, Commitment, And Concern For Each Of Our Fellow Human Beings.

Whether We Live Just A Few Years Or A Whole Century, It Would Be Truly Regrettable And Sad If We Were To Spend That Time Aggravating The Problems That Afflict Other People, Animals, And The Environment. The Most Important Things Is To Be A Good Human Being.

The Essence Of All Religions Is Love, Compassion, And Tolerance. Kindness Is My True Religion. The Clear Proof Of A Person's Love Of God Is If That Person Genuinely Shows Love To Fellow Human Beings.

The Problem Isn't Materialism As Such. Rather It Is The Underlying Assumption That Full Satisfaction Can Arise From Gratifying The Senses Alone. Unlike Animals Whose Quest For Happiness Is Restricted To Survival And To The Immediate Gratification Of Sensory Desires, We Human Beings Have The Capacity To Experience Happiness At A Deeper Level Which, When Achieved, Can Overwhelm Unhappy Experiences.

I Believe Deeply That We Must Find A New Spirituality... In Such A Way That All People Of Good Will Could Adhere To It... We Ought To Promote This Concept With The Help Of Scientists... It Could Lead Us To What We Are Looking For.

If One's Life Is Simple, Contentment Has To Come. Simplicity Is Extremely Important For Happiness. Having Few Desires, Feeling Satisfied With What You Have, Is Very Vital: Satisfaction With Just Enough Food, Clothing, And Shelter To Protect Yourself From The Elements.

There Is Soul Music, Soul Food, And Soul Love.

I Think Technology Really Increased Human Ability, But Technology Cannot Produce Compassion.

The Death Penalty Fulfills A Preventive Function, But It Is Also Very Clearly A Form Of Revenge. It Is An Especially Severe Form Of Punishment Because It Is So Final. The Human Life Is Ended And The Executed Person Is Deprived Of The Opportunity To Change, To Restore The Harm Done Or Compensate For It.

I Am Convinced That Human Nature Is Basically Affectionate And Good. If Our Behavior Follows Our Kind And Loving Nature, Immense Benefits Will Result, Not Only For Ourselves, But Also For The Society To Which We Belong. I Generally Refer To This Sort Of Love And Affection As A Universal Religion. Everyone Needs It, Believers As Much As Non-believers. This Attitude Constitutes The Very Basis Of Morality.

On A Daily Basis, You Must Take More Care Of Your Mind Than Just Money, Money, Money!

One Can Be Deceived By Three Types Of Laziness: Of Indolence, Which Is The Wish To Procrastinate; The Laziness Of Inferiority, Which Is Doubting Your Capabilities; And The Laziness That Is Attachment To Negative Actions, Or Putting Great Effort Into Non-virtue.

We Can't Be Useful To Ourselves Unless We're Useful To Others .... Anyone Concerned Only By His Own Well-being Will Suffer Eventually. Anyone Concerned With The Well-being Of Others Takes Care Of Himself Without Even Thinking About It. Even If We Decide To Remain Selfish. Let Us Be Intelligently Selfish - Let Us Help Others.

We Begin From The Recognition That All Beings Cherish Happiness And Do Not Want Suffering. It Then Becomes Both Morally Wrong And Pragmatically Unwise To Pursue Only One's Own Happiness Oblivious To The Feelings And Aspirations Of All Others Who Surround Us As Members Of The Same Human Family. The Wiser Course Is To Think Of Others When Pursuing Our Own Happiness.

Education Is The Way To Achieve Far-reaching Results, It Is The Proper Way To Promote Compassion And Tolerance In Society.

There Is Only One Important Point You Must Keep In Your Mind And Let It Be Your Guide. No Matter What People Call You, You Are Just Who You Are. Keep To This Truth. You Must Ask Yourself How Is It You Want To Live Your Life. We Live And We Die, This Is The Truth That We Can Only Face Alone. No One Can Help Us, Not Even The Buddha. So Consider Carefully, What Prevents You From Living The Way You Want To Live Your Life?

It Is Not Only Our Right As Members Of The Global Human Family To Protest When Our Brothers And Sisters Are Being Treated Brutally, But It Is Also Our Duty To Do Whatever We Can To Hep Them.

By Developing A Sense Of Concern For Others' Well-being, Then No Matter What Others' Attitudes Are, You Can Keep Inner Peace.

One Can Overcome The Forces Of Negative Emotions, Like Anger And Hatred, By Cultivating Their Counter-forces, Like Love And Compassion.

Attachment Constrains Our Vision So That We Are Not Able To See Things From A Wider Perspective.

If We Can Refrain From Harming Others In Our Actions & Words, We Can Start To Give Serious Attention To Actively Doing Good.

It Is My Fundamental Belief That All Human Beings Share The Same Basic Aspirations: That We All Want Hapiness And That We All Share Suffering. Asians, Just Like Americans, Europeans, And The Rest Of The World, Share A Desire To Live Life To Its Fullest, To Better Ourselves And The Lives Of Our Loved Ones.

Nowadays, We Are Confronted By A Huge Gap Between Rich And Poor. This Is Not Only Morally Wrong, But Practically A Mistake. It Leads To The Rich Living In Anxiety And The Poor Living In Frustration, Which Has The Potential To Lead To More Violence. We Have To Work To Reduce This Gap. It's Truly Unfair That Some People Should Have So Much While Others Go Hungry.

When We Face Problems With Compassion, Sincerity, And Good Motivation, Our Solutions May Take Longer, But Ultimately They Are Better.

It Is Felt That A Disciplined Mind Leads To Happiness And An Undisciplined Mind Leads To Suffering, And In Fact It Is Said That Bringing About Discipline Within One's Mind Is The Essence Of The Buddha's Teaching.

We Must Work To Resolve Conflicts In A Spirit Of Reconciliation And Always Keep In Mind The Interests Of Others. We Cannot Destroy Our Neighours! We Cannot Ignore Their Interests!

You Cant Help Someone Just By Making A Wish To Do So, You Have To Take Action.

According To My Own Experience, The Highest Level Of Inner Calm Comes From The Development Of Love And Compassion. The More Concerned We Are With The Happiness Of Others, The More We Increase Our Own Well-being. Friendliness And Warmth Towards Others Allow Us To Relax And Help Us To Dispel Any Sense Of Fear Or Insecurity So We Can Overcome Whatever Obstacles We Face.

One Thing I Want To Make Clear, As Far As My Own Rebirth Is Concerned, The Final Authority Is Myself And No One Else, And Obviously Not China's Communists.

An Affectionate Disposition Not Only Makes The Mind More Peaceful And Calm, But It Affects Our Body In A Positive Way Too. On The Other Hand, Hatred, Jealousy And Fear Upset Our Peace Of Mind, Make Us Agitated And Affect Our Body Adversely. Even Our Body Needs Peace Of Mind And Is Not Suited To Agitation. This Shows That An Appreciation For Peace Of Mind Is In Our Blood.

Old Friends Pass Away, New Friends Appear. It Is Just Like The Days. An Old Day Passes, A New Day Arrives. The Important Thing Is To Make It Meaningful: A Meaningful Friend - Or A Meaningful Day.

One Who Is Caught In Thought Loses One's Original Nature. All He Knows Are Words And Descriptions. When He Sees The Actual Thing, He Fails To Perceive It.

My Earnest Request Is That You Practice Love And Kindness Whether You Believe In A Religion Or Not

In Order To Become Prosperous, A Person Must Initially Work Very Hard, So He Or She Has To Sacrifice A Lot Of Leisure Time.

Lack Of Understanding Of The True Nature Of Happiness, It Seems To Me, Is The Principal Reason Why People Inflict Sufferings On Others. They Think Either That The Other's Pain May Somehow Be A Cause Of Happiness For Themselves Or That Their Own Happiness Is More Important, Regardless Of What Pain It May Cause. But This Is Shortsighted. No One Truly Benefits From Causing Harm To Another Sentient Being. . . . . In The Long Run Causing Others Misery And Infringing Their Rights To Peace And Happiness Result In Anxiety, Fear, And Suspicion Within Oneself.

It Is Important Not To Allow Ourselves To Be Put Off By The Magnitude Of Others' Suffering. The Misery Of Millions Is Not A Cause For Pity. Rather It Is A Cause For Compassion.

My Message Is The Practice Of Compassion, Love And Kindness.

Freedom Is The Real Source Of Human Happiness And Creativity. Irrespective Of Whether You Are A Believer Or Nonbeliever, Whether Buddhist, Christian, Or Jew, The Important Thing Is To Be A Good Human Being.

Once We Have A Firm Practice Of Compassion Our State Of Mind Becomes Stronger Which Leads To Inner Peace, Giving Rise To Self-confidence, Which Reduces Fear. This Makes For Constructive Members Of The Community. Self-centredness On The Other Hand Leads To Distance, Suspicion, Mistrust And Loneliness, With Unhappiness As The Result.

Without Inner Peace It Is Impossible To Achieve World Peace, External Peace. Weapons Themselves Do Not Act. They Have Not Come Out Of The Blue. Man Has Made Them. But Even Given Those Weapons, Those Terrible Weapons, They Cannot Act By Themselves. As Long As They Are Left Alone In Storage They Cannot Do Any Harm. A Human Being Must Use Them. Someone Must Push The Button. Satan, The Evil Powers, Cannot Push That Button. Human Beings Must Do It.

People Often Expect The Other Person To Respond First In A Positive Way, Instead Of Taking The Initiative To Create That Possibility. I Feel That's Wrong; It Can Act As A Barrier That Just Promotes A Feeling Of Isolation From Others. To Overcome Feelings Of Isolation And Loneliness, Your Underlying Attitude Makes A Tremendous Difference - Approaching Others With The Thought Of Compassion In Your Mind Is The Best Way.
