Human Beings By Nature Want Happiness And Do Not Want Suffering. With That Feeling Everyone Tries To Achieve Happiness And Tries To Get Rid Of Suffering, And Everyone Has The Basic Right To Do This. In This Way, All Here Are The Same, Whether Rich Or Poor, Educated Or Uneducated, Easterner Or Westerner, Believer Or Non-believer, And Within Believers Whether Buddhist, Christian, Jewish, Muslim, And So On. Basically, From The Viewpoint Of Real Human Value We Are All The Same.

I Really Feel That Some People Neglect And Overlook Compassion Because They Associate It With Religion. Of Course, Everyone Is Free To Choose Whether They Pay Religion Any Regard, But To Neglect Compassion Is A Mistake Because It Is The Source Of Our Own Well-being.

It Is The State Of Mind Of The Person Wielding The Instrument That Determines To What End It Will Be Put.

It Is My Fundamental Conviction That Compassion - The Natural Capacity Of The Human Heart To Feel Concern For And Connection With Another Human Being - Constitutes A Basic Aspect Of Our Nature Shared By All Human Beings, As Well As Being The Foundation Of Our Happiness. All Ethical Teachings, Whether Religious Or Nonreligious, Aim To Nurture This Innate And Precious Quality, To Develop It And To Perfect It.

We Are Born And Reborn Countless Number Of Times, And It Is Possible That Each Being Has Been Our Parent At One Time Or Another. Therefore, It Is Likely That All Beings In This Universe Have Familial Connections.

Hardship, In Forcing Us To Exercise Greater Patience And Forbearance In Daily Life, Actually Makes Us Stronger And More Robust. From The Daily Experience Of Hardship Comes A Greater Capacity To Accept Difficulties Without Losing Our Sense Of Inner Calm. Of Course, I Do Not Advocate Seeking Out Hardship As A Way Of Life, But Merely Wish To Suggest That, If You Relate To It Constructively, It Can Bring Greater Inner Strength And Fortitude.

Peace In The World Relies On Individuals Finding Inner Peace.

Each One Of Us Is Responsible For The Whole Of Humankind. We Need To Think Of Each Other Really As Brothers And Sisters And To Be Concerned For Each Other’s Welfare. Rather Than Working Solely To Acquire Wealth, We Need To Do Something Meaningful, Something Directed Seriously Towards The Welfare Of Humanity As A Whole.

Now Is The Time When Your Action Is Practice.

I'm Now Nearly 79. At 16 I Took Responsibility For Tibet And Lost My Freedom. At 24 I Lost My Country And Became A Refugee. I've Met Difficulties, But As The Saying Goes: 'wherever You're Happy, You Can Call Home, And Whoever Is Kind To You Is Like Your Parents.' I've Been Happy And At Home In The World At Large. Living A Meaningful Life Isn't Just A Matter Of Money; It's About Dedicating Your Life To Helping Others.

Human Beings Will Continue To Deceive And Overpower One Another. Basically, Everyone Exists In The Very Nature Of Suffering, So To Abuse Or Mistreat Each Other Is Futile. The Foundation Of All Spiritual Practice Is Love. That You Practice This Well Is My Only Request.

Buddhism Does Not Accept A Theory Of God, Or A Creator. According To Buddhism, One's Own Actions Are The Creator, Ultimately. Some People Say That, From A Certain Angle, Buddhism Is Not A Religion But Rather A Science Of Mind.

A Genuine Transformation That Results From Sustained Concerted Effort Is Long Lasting Because It Has A Firm Foundation.

The More Adept We Become At Cultivating An Altruistic Attitude, The Happier We Will Feel And The More Comfortable Will Be The Atmosphere Around Us. But If Our Emotions Fluctuate Wildly And We Easily Give In To Hatred And Jealousy, Even Our Friends Will Avoid Us. So Even For People With No Spiritual Beliefs, It Is Important To Have A Peaceful Mind.

Moving Towards Better Rather Than Moving Away From Bad Is An Attitude Of Embracing Life Rather Than Rejecting It.

I Always Tell My Western Friends That It Is Best To Keep Your Own Tradition. Changing Religion Is Not Easy And Sometimes Causes Confusion. You Must Value Your Tradition And Honor Your Own Religion.

When You Lose, Don't Lose The Lesson.

Like Anyone Else, I Too Have The Potential For Violence; I Too Have Anger In Me. However, I Try To Recall That Anger Is A Destructive Emotion. I Remind Myself That Scientists Now Say That Anger Is Bad For Our Health; It Eats Into Our Immune System. So, Anger Destroys Our Peace Of Mind And Our Physical Health. We Shouldn’t Welcome It Or Think Of It As Natural Or As A Friend.

Study And Practice Are Both Very Important, But They Must Go Hand In Hand. Faith Without Knowledge Is Not Sufficient. Faith Needs To Be Supported By Reason. However Intellectual Understanding That Is Not Applied In Practice Is Also Of Little Use. Whatever We Learn From Study We Need To Apply Sincerely In Our Daily Lives.

We Can Live Without Religion And Meditation, But We Cannot Survive Without Human Affection.

The Key To Genuine Happiness Is In Our Hands. To Think This Way Is To Discover The Essential Values Of Kindness, Brotherly Love And Altruism. The More Clearly We See The Benefits Of These Values, The More We Will Seek To Reject Anything That Opposes Them; In This Way We Will Be Able To Bring About Inner Transformation.

In Today’s Interconnected And Globalized World, It Is Now Commonplace For People Of Dissimilar World Views, Faiths And Races To Live Side By Side. It Is A Matter Of Great Urgency, Therefore, That We Find Ways To Cooperate With One Another In A Spirit Of Mutual Acceptance And Respect.

What We Do And Think In Our Own Lives, Then, Becomes Of Extreme Importance As It Effects Everything We're Connected To.

If Humanity Is To Survive, Happiness And Inner Balance Are Crucial. Otherwise The Lives Of Our Children And Their Children Are More Likely To Be Unhappy, Desperate And Short. Material Development Certainly Contributes To Happiness - To Some Extent - And A Comfortable Way Of Life. But This Is Not Sufficient. To Achieve A Deeper Level Of Happiness We Cannot Neglect Our Inner Development.

No Matter What Part Of The World We Come From, We Are All Basically The Same Human Beings. We All Seek Happiness And Try To Avoid Suffering. We Have The Same Basic Human Needs And Concerns. All Of Us Human Beings Want Freedom And The Right To Determine Our Own Destiny As Individuals And As Peoples. That Is Human Nature.

Some People Consider The Practice Of Love And Compassion Is Only Related To Religious Practice And If They Are Not Interested In Religion They Neglect These Inner Values. But Love And Compassion Are Qualities That Human Beings Require Just To Live Together.

All Religions Try To Benefit People, With The Same Basic Message Of The Need For Love And Compassion, For Justice And Honesty, For Contentment.

Until You Have The Inner Discipline That Brings Calmness Of Mind, External Facilities And Conditions Will Never Bring The Joy And Happiness You Seek. On The Other Hand, If You Possess This Inner Quality, Calmness Of Mind, A Degree Of Stability Within, Even If You Lack The Various External Factors That You Would Normally Require To Be Happy, It Will Still Be Possible To Live A Happy And Joyful Life.

Our Visit To This Planet Is Short, So We Should Use Our Time Meaningfully, Which We Can Do By Helping Others Wherever Possible. And If We Cannot Help Others, At Least We Should Try Not To Create Pain And Suffering For Them.

Human Potential Is The Same For All. Your Feeling, 'i Am Of No Value', Is Wrong. Absolutely Wrong. You Are Deceiving Yourself. We All Have The Power Of Thought — So What Are You Lacking? If You Have Will-power , Then You Can Do Anything. It Is Usually Said That You Are Your Own Master.

Believe In Yourself

All Religion Teaches The Virtues Of Love, Altruism And Patience, While Showing Us How To Discipline And Transform Ourselves To Achieve Inner Peace And A Kind Heart. Therefore, They Are Worthy Of Our Respect.

So Our Future Is In Our Own Hands. What Greater Free Will Do We Need?

While It Is All Very Well To Distinguish Happiness That Is Transient From That Which Is Lasting, Between Ephemeral And Genuine Happiness, The Only Happiness It Is Meaningful To Speak Of When A Person Is Dying From Thirst Is Access To Water.

When We Speak Of A Calm State Of Mind Or Peace Of Mind, We Shouldn't Confuse That With An Insensitive State Of Apathy. Having A Calm Or Peaceful State Of Mind Doesn't Mean Being Spaced Out Or Completely Empty. Peace Of Mind Or A Calm State Of Mind Is Rooted In Affection And Compassion And Is Sensitive And Responsive To Others.

I Only Escaped From Tibet Because I Feared My People Would Resort To Desperate Violence If The Chinese Took Me As Their Prisoner.

Although Under Particular Circumstances, The Violence Method - Any Method - Can Be Justified, Nevertheless Once You Commit Violence, Then Counterviolence Will Be Returned.

Our Most Valuable Teachers Are Our Enemies.while Our Friends Can Help Us In Many Ways, Only Our Enemies Can Provide Us With The Challenge We Need To Develop Tolerance, Patience, And Compassionthree Virtues Essential For Building Character, Developing Peace Of Mind, And Bringing Us True Happiness.

Overcoming Negative Tendencies And Enhancing Positive Potential Are The Very Essence Of The Spiritual Path.

As Far As Mental Development Is Concerned, We Should Never Be Complacent. We Can Develop Our Minds Infinitely - There Is No Limitation.

True Spirituality Is A Mental Attitude You Can Practice At Any Time.

It Is A Question Of Our Own Peace And Mental Stability.

It Is Not Just A Person's Physical Constitution, Their Intellegence, Their Education, Or Even Their Social Conditioning That Enables Them To Withstand Hardship. Much More Significant Is Their Inner Development. And While Some May Be Able To Survive Through Sheer Willpower, The Ones Who Suffer The Least Are Those Who Have A High Degree Of Patience And Courage In The Face Of Adversity.

Patience As We Wait To Take Action Is A Kind Of Compassionate Mind. Impatience On The Other Hand Can Be A Source Of Failure.

Love, Compassion And Concern For Others Are Real Sources Of Happiness. If You Have These In Abundance, You Will Not Be Disturbed Even By The Most Uncomfortable Circumstances. If You Nurse Hatred, However, You Will Not Be Happy Even In The Lap Of Luxury. Thus, If We Really Want Happiness, We Must Widen The Sphere Of Love. This Is Both Religious Thinking And Basic Common Sense.

If You The Owner Of The Dog, Really Showing Not Just Food But Real Affection, Then Dog Very Much Appreciate. Isn't It?

Nonviolence Is The Only Way. Even If You Achieve Your Goal By Violent Means There Are Always Side Effects, And These Can Be Worse Than The Problem. Violence Is Against Human Nature.

The Wiser Course Is To Think Of Others When Pursuing Our Own Happiness.

Compassion Is One Of The Principal Things That Make Our Lives Meaningful. It Is The Source Of All Lasting Happiness And Joy.

I'm Sure All Of Us Agree That We Need To Overcome Violence, But We First Need To Examine Whether It Has Any Value. From A Strictly Practical Perspective, On Certain Occasions Violence Appears To Be Useful. We Can Solve A Problem Quickly By Force. But This Success Is Often At The Expense Of The Rights And Welfare Of Others. Although One Problem Has Been Solved, The Seed Of Another Has Been Planted.

From The Viewpoint Of Absolute Truth, What We Feel And Experience In Our Ordinary Daily Life Is All Delusion. Of All The Various Delusions, The Sense Of Discrimination Between Oneself And Others Is The Worst Form, As It Creates Nothing But Unpleasantness For Both Sides. If We Can Realize And Meditate On Ultimate Truth, It Will Cleanse Our Impurities Of Mind And Thus Eradicate The Sense Of Discrimination. This Will Help To Create True Love For One Another. The Search For Ultimate Truth Is, Therefore, Vitally Important.

Sometimes, Whether A Desire Is Excessive Or Negative Depends On The Circumstances Or Society In Which You Live In.

In Disagreements With Loved Ones, Deal Only With The Current Situation. Don't Bring Up The Past.

My Brain And My Heart Are My Temples. My True Religion Is Kindness.

Unfortunately, Love And Compassion Have Been Omitted From Too Many Spheres Of Social Interaction For Too Long. Usually Confined To Family And Home, Their Practice In Public Life Is Considered Impractical, Even Naive. This Is Tragic.

We All Have The Potential To Show Others Love And Affection, But As We Progress In Our Materialistic World, These Values Tend To Remain Dormant. We Can Develop Them On The Basis Of Common Sense, Common Experience And Scientific Findings. The Response To The Recent Tragedy In The Philippines Is An Example Of How Such Values Are Awakened; People Helped Simply Because Others Are Suffering And In Need Of Support.

With Realization Of One's Own Potential And Self-confidence In One's Ability, One Can Build A Better World.

Basically, From The Viewpoint Of Real Human Value We Are All The Same.

Prayer Alone Will Not Make A Happy Life. A Happy Life Must Be Built. You Must Act.

The Greater The Level Of Calmness Of Our Mind, The Greater Our Peace Of Mind, The Greater Our Ability To Enjoy A Happy And Joyful Life.

People Often Expect The Other Person To Respond First In A Positive Way, Instead Of Taking The Initiative To Create That Possibility. I Feel That's Wrong; It Can Act As A Barrier That Just Promotes A Feeling Of Isolation From Others. To Overcome Feelings Of Isolation And Loneliness, Your Underlying Attitude Makes A Tremendous Difference - Approaching Others With The Thought Of Compassion In Your Mind Is The Best Way.

We Must Generate Courage Equal To The Size Of The Difficulties We Face.

An Affectionate Disposition Not Only Makes The Mind More Peaceful And Calm, But It Affects Our Body In A Positive Way Too. On The Other Hand, Hatred, Jealousy And Fear Upset Our Peace Of Mind, Make Us Agitated And Affect Our Body Adversely. Even Our Body Needs Peace Of Mind And Is Not Suited To Agitation. This Shows That An Appreciation For Peace Of Mind Is In Our Blood.

Tolerance And Patience Should Not Be Read As Signs Of Weakness. They Are Signs Of Strength.

As Our Own Peace Of Mind Grows, So The Atmosphere Around Us Becomes More Peaceful.

Without Religion, Also There Is A Way, It Could Be This Way, Through Education, Through Scientific Findings, Then You Get Conviction. Not Necessarily Really Love Other, But For Their Own Interest They Are Showing Love, Compassion To Other Like That.

Helping Others Is Not Limited To Providing Food, Shelter, And So Forth, But Includes Relieving The Basic Causes Of Suffering And Providing The Basic Causes Of Happiness.

As Human Beings, We Are Only Able To Survive In Dependence Upon The Co-operation, Help And Kindness Of Other Fellow Humans.

If The Dalai Lama Joins One Party, Then That Makes It Hard For The System To Work.

Kindness And A Good Heart Are The Foundation For Success In This Life, Progress On The Spiritual Path, And The Fulfillment Of Our Aspirations. Our Need For Them Is Not Limited To Any Specific Time, Place, Society, Or Culture.

If An Individual Has A Calm State Of Mind, That Person's Attitudes And Views Will Be Calm And Tranquil Even In The Presence Of Great Agitation.

I Do Not See Any Reason Why Animals Should Be Slaughtered To Serve As Human Diet When There Are So Many Substitutes. After All, Man Can Live Without Meat. It Is Only Some Carnivorous Animals That Have To Subsist On Flesh. Killing Animals For Sport, For Pleasure, For Adventures, And For Hides And Furs Is A Phenomenon Which Is At Once Disgusting And Distressing. There Is No Justification In Indulging In Such Acts Of Brutality . . . Life Is As Dear To A Mute Creature As It Is To A Man. Just As One Wants Happiness And Fears Pain, Just As One Wants To Live And Not To Die, So Do Other Creatures.

According To Accounts Of The Buddha's Life, It Would Seem That He Had A Very Deep Relationship With Nature. He Was Not Born In The Royal Palace But In A Park, Under A Sala Tree. He Attained Complete Enlightenment Under The Bodhi Tree And Left This Earth To Enter Parinirvana, Again, Between Three Sala Trees. It Would Seem That The Buddha Was Very Fond Of Trees.

If Science Proves Facts That Conflict With Buddhist Understanding, Buddhism Must Change Accordingly. We Should Always Adopt A View That Accords With The Facts.

Happiness Is The Highest Form Of Health.

If We Make Consistent Effort, Based On Proper Education, We Can Change The World.

We Believe In Self Creation. That's Why Buddhists Believe In The Four Noble Truths.

I Never Dreamt, In My Dream, I'm Dalai Lama.

There Is A Saying In Tibetan That "at The Door Of The Miserable Rich Man Sleeps The Contented Beggar". The Point Of This Saying Is Not That Poverty Is A Virtue, But That Happiness Does Not Come With Wealth, But From Setting Limits To One's Desires, And Living Within Those Limits With Satisfaction.

Although Violence And The Use Of Force May Appear Powerful And Decisive, Their Benefits Are Short-lived. Violence Can Never Bring A Lasting And Long Term Resolution To Any Problem, Because It Is Unpredictable And For Every Problem It Seems To Solve, Others Are Created. On The Other Hand, Truth Remains Constant And Will Ultimately Prevail.

On Every Level Of Human Life, Compassion Is The Key Thing.

A Positive Future Cannot Emerge From The Mind Of Anger Of Despair

The Only "definitive Truth" For Buddhism Is The Absolute Negation Of Any One Truth As The Definitive Truth.

Compassion And Tolerance Are Not A Sign Of Weakness, But A Sign Of Strength.

It Is Our Enemies Who Provide Us With The Challenge We Need To Develop The Qualities Of Tolerance, Patience And Compassion.

Anything That Contradicts Experience And Logic Should Be Abandoned.

The Affection Is Mainly Biological Factor. Then Further Sort Of Strengthening, That Religion Helps.

On The Other Hand, If Someone Is Suffering From Depression, Anxiety, Or Any Form Of Emotional Distress, Then Even If He Or She Happens To Be Enjoying Physical Comforts, He Will Not Really Be Able To Experience The Happiness That These Could Bring.

There Is No Self-interest Completely Unrelated To Others' Interests. Due To The Fundamental Interconnectedness Which Lies At The Heart Of Reality, Your Interest Is Also My Interest. From This It Becomes Clear That "my" Interest And "your" Interest Are Intimately Connected. In A Deep Sense, They Converge.

We Are Driven By Self-interest, It’s Necessary To Survive. But We Need Wise Self-interest That Is Generous And Co-operative, Taking Others’ Interests Into Account. Co-operation Comes From Friendship, Friendship Comes From Trust, And Trust Comes From Kind-heartedness. Once You Have A Genuine Sense Of Concern For Others, There’s No Room For Cheating, Bullying Or Exploitation.

Hatred, Jealousy And Excessive Attachment Cause Suffering And Agitation. I Feel Compassion Can Help Us Overcome These Disturbances And Let Us Return To A Calm State Of Mind. Compassion Is Not Just Being Kind To Your Friend. That Involves Attachment Because It Is Based On Expectation. Compassion Is When You Do Something Good Without Any Expectations - Based On Realizing That "the Other Person Is Also Just Like Me".

I Think When Religions Such As Hinduism And Buddhism - As Well As Christianity And Judaism - Were Founded, At That Time Societies Were Generally Male-dominated. So, Therefore This Social Notion Also Influenced Religion.

They Are Looking To You For Guidance, For Help, For Courage, For Strength, For Understanding, And For Assurance At This Hour. Most Of All, They Are Looking To You For Love.

Through Training There Is Knowledge. You Can Produce Compassion, Love, Forgiveness. You Can Change Yourself.
