Classically, There Are Three Ways In Which Humans Try To Find Transcendence--religious Meaning--apart From God As Revealed Through The Cross Of Jesus: Through The Ecstasy Of Alcohol And Drugs, Through The Ecstasy Of Recreational Sex, Through The Ecstasy Of Crowds. Church Leaders Frequently Warn Against The Drugs And The Sex, But At Least, In America, Almost Never Against The Crowds.

All The Persons Of Faith I Know Are Sinners, Doubters, Uneven Performers. We Are Secure Not Because We Are Sure Of Ourselves But Because We Trust That God Is Sure Of Us.

The Moment The Organic Unity Of Belief And Behaviour Is Damaged In Any Way, We Are Incapable Of Living Out The Full Humanity For Which We Were Created.

If People Don't Know Their Pastor, It's Easy To Put The Pastor On A Pedestal And Depersonalize Him Or Her. It's Also Easy For Pastors, Who Don't Know Their Congregations, Simply To Classify Congregants As Saved Or Unsaved, Involved Or Not Involved, Tithers Or Non-tithers.

If We Get Our Information From The Biblical Material There Is No Doubt That The Christian Life Is A Dancing, Leaping, Daring Life.

The Only Opportunity You Will Ever Have To Live By Faith Is In The Circumstances You Are Provided This Very Day: This House You Live In, This Family You Find Yourself In, This Job You Have Been Given, The Weather Conditions That Prevail At The ...moment.

We Cannot Be Too Careful About The Words We Use; We Start Out Using Them And They End Up Using Us.

Church Is The Textured Context In Which We Grow Up In Christ To Maturity. But Church Is Difficult. Sooner Or Later, Though, If We Are Serious About Growing Up In Christ, We Have To Deal With Church. I Say Sooner.

The Religious Leader Is The Most Untrustworthy Of Leaders; In No Other Station Do We Have So Many Opportunities For Pride, Covetousness And Lust, And With So Many Excellent Disguises To Keep Such Ignobility From Being Found Out And Called To Account.

There Are No Experts In The Company Of Jesus. We Are All Beginners, Necessarily Followers, Because We Don’t Know Where We Are Going.

Industrialized Nations Acquire Appetites For More And More Luxuries And Higher And Higher Standards Of Living, And Increasing Numbers Of People Are Made Poor And Hungry. The Spirit Works Through Community. Somebody Will Have A Stupid, Screwy Idea. That's Okay. The Point Of Having Creeds And Confessions And Traditions Is To Keep Us In Touch With The Obvious Errors.

Neither The Adventure Of Goodness Nor The Pursuit Of Righteousness Gets Headlines.

If We Don't Understand How Metaphor Works We Will Misunderstand Most Of What We Read In The Bible. No Matter How Carefully We Parse Our Hebrew And Greek Sentences, No Matter How Precisely We Use Our Dictionaries And Trace Our Etymologies, No Matter How Exactly We Define The Words On The Page, If We Do Not Appreciate The Way A Metaphor Works We Will Never Comprehend The Meaning Of The Text.

Sabbath Is That Uncluttered Time And Space In Which We Can Distance Ourselves From Our Own Activities Enough To See What God Is Doing.

People Learn To Shop For Churches; There Is No Loyalty To The Church. They're Consumers Being Attracted To One Product Or Another. I Think It's Sacrilege, To Tell You The Truth, It Really Is.

Wisdom Is The Art Of Living Skillfully In Whatever Actual Conditions We Find Ourselves.

It Is Not Easy To Convey A Sense Of Wonder, Let Alone Resurrection Wonder, To Another. It’s The Very Nature Of Wonder To Catch Us Off Guard, To Circumvent Expectations And Assumptions. Praying Puts Us At Risk Of Getting Involved In God's Conditions. Be Slow To Pray. Praying Most Often Doesn't Get Us What We Want But What God Wants, Something Quite At Variance With What We Conceive To Be In Our Best Interests.

I Will Not Try To Run My Own Life Or The Lives Of Others; That Is God's Business.

Our Father In Heaven, Reveal Who You Are. Set The World Right; Do What's Best - As Above, So Below. Keep Us Alive With Three Square Meals. Keep Us Forgiven With You And Forgiving Others. Keep Us Safe From Ourselves And The Devil. You're In Charge!

God Is The Larger Context And Plot In Which Our Stories Find Themselves.

To Follow Jesus Implies That We Enter Into A Way Of Life That Is Given Character And Shape And Direction By The One Who Calls Us. To Follow Jesus Means Picking Up Rhythms And Ways Of Doing Things That Are Often Unsaid But Always Derivative From Jesus, Formed By The Influence Of Jesus. To Follow Jesus Means That We Can't Separate What Jesus Is Saying From What Jesus Is Doing And The Way That He Is Doing It. To Follow Jesus Is As Much, Or Maybe Even More, About Feet As It Is About Ears And Eyes" (the Way Of Jesus, Eugene H. Peterson, 22).

Pity Can Be Nearsighted And Condescending; Shared Suffering Can Be Dignifying And Life-changing.

Every Call To Worship Is A Call Into The Real World.... I Encounter Such Constant And Widespread Lying About Reality Each Day And Meet With Such Skilled And Systematic Distortion Of The Truth That I'm Always In Danger Of Losing My Grip On Reality. The Reality, Of Course, Is That God Is Sovereign And Christ Is Savior. The Reality Is That Prayer Is My Mother Tongue And The Eucharist My Basic Food. The Reality Is That Baptism, Not Myers-briggs, Defines Who I Am.

The Minute The Church And Pastors Start Saying What Do People Want And Then Giving It To Them, We Betray Our Calling. We're Called To Have People Follow Jesus. We're Called To Have People Learn How To Forgive Their Enemies.

The Bible Is Not A Script For A Funeral Service, But It Is The Record Of God Always Bringing Life Where We Expected To Find Death. Everywhere It Is The Story Of Resurrection.

The Vocation Of Pastor Has Been Replaced By The Strategies Of Religious Entrepreneurs With Business Plans.

Religion Is A Very Scary Thing, Because A Pastor Is In A Position Of Power. And If You Use That Power Badly, You Ruin People's Lives, And You Ruin Your Own Life.

You're Here To Be Light... Shine! Be Generous With Your Lives.

The Task Of The Prophet Is Not To Smooth Things Over But To Make Things Right.

The Way Of Jesus Cannot Be Imposed Or Mapped — It Requires An Active Participation In Following Jesus As He Leads Us Through Sometimes Strange And Unfamiliar Territory, In Circumstances That Become Clear Only In The Hesitations And Questionings, In The Pauses And Reflections Where We Engage In Prayerful Conversation With One Another And With Him.

If You Keep The Sabbath, You Start To See Creation Not As Somewhere To Get Away From Your Ordinary Life, But A Place To Frame An Attentiveness To Your Life.

If You Don't Take A Sabbath, Something Is Wrong. You're Doing Too Much, You're Being Too Much In Charge. You've Got To Quit, One Day A Week, And Just Watch What God Is Doing When You're Not Doing Anything.

No Life Of Faith Can Be Lived Privately. There Must Be Overflow Into The Lives Of Others.

Repentance Is A Realization That What God Wants From You And What You Want From God Are Not Going To Be Achieved By Doing The Same Old Things, Thinking The Same Old Thoughts. Repentance Is A Decision To Follow Jesus Christ And Become His Pilgrim In The Path Of Peace. Repentance Is The Most Practical Of All Words And The Most Practical Of All Acts. It Is A Feet-on-the-ground-kind-of-word. It Puts A Person In Touch With The Reality That God Creates.

That's Why I Tell Stories: To Create Readiness, To Nudge The People Toward Receptive Insight. In Their Present State They Can Stare Till Doomsday And Not See It, Listen Till They're Blue In The Face And Not Get It.

One Way To Define Spiritual Life Is Getting So Tired And Fed Up With Yourself You Go On To Something Better, Which Is Following Jesus.

American Culture Is Probably The Least Christian Culture That We've Ever Had Because It Is So Materialistic And It's So Full Of Lies. The Whole Advertising World Is Just, It's Just Intertwined With Lies, Appealing To The Worst Of The Instincts We Have.

My Job Is Not To Solve People's Problems Or Make Them Happy, But To Help Them See The Grace Operating In Their Lives.

I Cannot Fail To Call The Congregation To Worship God, To Listen To His Word, To Offer Themselves To God.
