The Only Opportunity You Will Ever Have To Live By Faith Is In The Circumstances You Are Provided This Very Day: This House You Live In, This Family You Find Yourself In, This Job You Have Been Given, The Weather Conditions That Prevail At The ...moment.

If You Don't Take A Sabbath, Something Is Wrong. You're Doing Too Much, You're Being Too Much In Charge. You've Got To Quit, One Day A Week, And Just Watch What God Is Doing When You're Not Doing Anything.

Feelings Are Great Liars. If Christians Worshipped Only When They Felt Like It, There Would Be Precious Little Worship. We Think That If We Don’t Feel Something There Can Be No Authenticity In Doing It. But The Wisdom Of God Says Something Different: That We Can Act Ourselves Into A New Way Of Feeling Much Quicker Than We Can Feel Ourselves Into A New Way Of Acting. Pity Is One Of The Noblest Emotions Available To Human Beings; Self-pity Is Possibly The Most Ignoble . . . . [it] Is An Incapacity, A Crippling Emotional Disease That Severely Distorts Our Perception Of Reality . . . A Narcotic That Leaves Its Addicts Wasted And Derelict.

Christians Don't Simply Learn Or Study Or Use Scripture; We Assimilate It, Take It Into Our Lives In Such A Way That It Gets Metabolized Into Acts Of Love, Cups Of Cold Water, Missions Into All The World, Healing And Evangelism And Justice In Jesus' Name, Hands Raised In Adoration Of The Father, Feet Washed In Company With The Son.

God Made My Life Complete When I Placed All The Pieces Before Him. When I Got My Act Together, He Gave Me A Fresh Start. Now I'm Alert To God's Ways; I Don't Take God For Granted. Every Day I Review The Ways He Works; I Try Not To Miss A Trick. I Feel Put Back Together, And I'm Watching My Step. God Rewrote The Text Of My Life When I Opened The Book Of My Heart To His Eyes.

The Spirit Works Through Community. Somebody Will Have A Stupid, Screwy Idea. That's Okay. The Point Of Having Creeds And Confessions And Traditions Is To Keep Us In Touch With The Obvious Errors.

Repentance Is A Realization That What God Wants From You And What You Want From God Are Not Going To Be Achieved By Doing The Same Old Things, Thinking The Same Old Thoughts. You Don't Make Your Words True By Embellishing Them With Religious Lace. In Making Your Speech Sound More Religious, It Becomes Less True.

The Silence That Makes It Possible To Hear God Speak Also Makes It Possible For Us To Hear The World's Words For What They Really Are - Tinny And Unconvincing Lies.

We Let Ourselves Be Formed By These Formative Stories, And Especially As We Listen To The Stories That Jesus Tells, Get A Feel For The Way He Does It, The Way He Talks, The Way He Treats People, The Jesus Way.

Like The Sacramental Use Of Water And Bread And Wine, Friendship Takes What's Common In Human Experience And Turns It Into Something Holy.

The Most Important Thing A Pastor Does Is Stand In A Pulpit Every Sunday And Say, 'let Us Worship God.' If That Ceases To Be The Primary Thing I Do In Terms Of My Energy, My Imagination, And The Way I Structure My Life, Then I No Longer Function As A Pastor.

Prayer Is The Disciplined Refusal To Act Before God Acts.

I Believe God Takes The Things In Our Lives - Family, Background, Education - And Uses Them As Part Of His Calling. It Might Not Be To Become A Pastor. But I Don't Think God Wastes Anything.

I Don't Want To End Up A Bureaucrat In The Time-management Business For God Or A Librarian Cataloguing Timeless Truths. Salvation Is Kicking In The Womb Of Creation Right Now, Any Time Now. Pay Attention.

Spirituality Is No Different From What Weve Been Doing For Two Thousand Years Just By Going To Church And Receiving The Sacraments, Being Baptized, Learning To Pray, And Reading Scriptures Rightly. Its Just Ordinary Stuff.

I Think Pastors Are The Worst Listeners. We're So Used To Speaking, Teaching, Giving Answers. We Must Learn To Be Quiet, Quit Being So Verbal, Learn To Pay Attention To What's Going On, And Listen.

Neither The Adventure Of Goodness Nor The Pursuit Of Righteousness Gets Headlines.

One Way To Define Spiritual Life Is Getting So Tired And Fed Up With Yourself You Go On To Something Better, Which Is Following Jesus.

Isn't It Interesting That All Of The Biblical Prophets And Psalmists Were Poets?

This Is The Genesis Origin Of Who We Are: Dust - Dust That The Lord God Used To Make Us A Human Being. If We Cultivate A Lively Sense Of Our Origin And Nurture A Sense Of Continuity With It, Who Knows, We May Also Acquire Humility.

The Way Of Jesus Cannot Be Imposed Or Mapped — It Requires An Active Participation In Following Jesus As He Leads Us Through Sometimes Strange And Unfamiliar Territory, In Circumstances That Become Clear Only In The Hesitations And Questionings, In The Pauses And Reflections Where We Engage In Prayerful Conversation With One Another And With Him.

Pastors Are Highly Susceptible To The Sin Of Sloth.

Count Yourself Lucky, How Happy You Must Be - You Get A Fresh Start, Your Slate's Wiped Clean. Count Yourself Lucky - God Holds Nothing Against You And You're Holding Nothing Back From Him.

It Is Easier To Find Guides, Someone To Tell You What To Do, Than Someone To Be With You In A Discerning, Prayerful Companionship As You Work It Out Yourself. This Is What Spiritual Direction Is.

To Follow Jesus Implies That We Enter Into A Way Of Life That Is Given Character And Shape And Direction By The One Who Calls Us. To Follow Jesus Means Picking Up Rhythms And Ways Of Doing Things That Are Often Unsaid But Always Derivative From Jesus, Formed By The Influence Of Jesus. To Follow Jesus Means That We Can't Separate What Jesus Is Saying From What Jesus Is Doing And The Way That He Is Doing It. In High School I Was Very Much Involved In Poetry. You Cannot Read A Poem Quickly. There's Too Much Going On There. There Are Rhythms And Alliterations. You Have To Read Poetry Slow, Slow, Slow To Absorb It All.

Go Out Into The World Uncorrupted, A Breath Of Fresh Air In This Squalid And Polluted Society. Provide People With A Glimpse Of Good Living And Of The Living God.

Pastors Need To Know What's Going On In The World And What Has Been Going On For 4,000 Years. We Need A Way To Read Scripture Which Is Imaginative, Interpretive.

"sabbath Is Not Primarily About Us Or How It Benefits Us; It Is About God, And How God Forms Us. It Is Not, In The First Place, About What We Do Or Don't Do; It Is About God - Completing And Resting And Blessing And Sanctifying. These Are All Things That We Don't Know Much About......but It Does Mean Stopping And Being Quiet Long Enough To See - Open-mouthed - With Wonder - Resurrection Wonder.....we Cultivate The "fear Of The Lord". Our Souls Are Formed By What We Cannot Work Up Or Take Charge Of. We Respond And Enter Into What The Resurrection Of Jesus Continues To Do."
