It's Essential For Us To Develop An Imagination That Is Participatory. Art Is The Primary Way In Which This Happens. It's The Primary Way In Which We Become What We See Or Hear.

Pastors Need To Know What's Going On In The World And What Has Been Going On For 4,000 Years. We Need A Way To Read Scripture Which Is Imaginative, Interpretive.

The Religious Leader Is The Most Untrustworthy Of Leaders; In No Other Station Do We Have So Many Opportunities For Pride, Covetousness And Lust, And With So Many Excellent Disguises To Keep Such Ignobility From Being Found Out And Called To Account.

O God, When My Faith Gets Overladen With Dust, Blow It Clean With The Wind Of Your Spirit. When My Habits Of Obedience Get Stiff And Rusty, Anoint Them With The Oil Of Your Spirit. Restore The Enthusiasm Of My First Love For You.

If People Don't Know Their Pastor, It's Easy To Put The Pastor On A Pedestal And Depersonalize Him Or Her. It's Also Easy For Pastors, Who Don't Know Their Congregations, Simply To Classify Congregants As Saved Or Unsaved, Involved Or Not Involved, Tithers Or Non-tithers.

Worship Does Not Satisfy Our Hunger For God; It Whets Our Appetite.

When You Are Part Of A Megachurch You Have No Responsibility To Anybody Else.

Jesus Almost Never Talked In Terms Of Explaining. He Was Always Using Enigmatic Stories And Difficult Metaphors. He Was Always Pulling People Into Some Kind Of Participation.

Classically, There Are Three Ways In Which Humans Try To Find Transcendence--religious Meaning--apart From God As Revealed Through The Cross Of Jesus: Through The Ecstasy Of Alcohol And Drugs, Through The Ecstasy Of Recreational Sex, Through The Ecstasy Of Crowds. Church Leaders Frequently Warn Against The Drugs And The Sex, But At Least, In America, Almost Never Against The Crowds.

The Gospel Is Never About Everybody Else; It Is Always About You, About Me. The Gospel Is Never Truth In General; It's Always A Truth In Specific. The Gospel Is Never A Commentary On Ideas Or Cultures Or Conditions; It's Always About Actual Persons, Actual Pains, Actual Troubles, Actual Sin; You, Me; Who You Are And What You've Done; Who I Am And What I've Done.

I Don't Want To End Up A Bureaucrat In The Time-management Business For God Or A Librarian Cataloguing Timeless Truths. Salvation Is Kicking In The Womb Of Creation Right Now, Any Time Now. Pay Attention.

To Follow Jesus Implies That We Enter Into A Way Of Life That Is Given Character And Shape And Direction By The One Who Calls Us. To Follow Jesus Means Picking Up Rhythms And Ways Of Doing Things That Are Often Unsaid But Always Derivative From Jesus, Formed By The Influence Of Jesus. To Follow Jesus Means That We Can't Separate What Jesus Is Saying From What Jesus Is Doing And The Way That He Is Doing It. Pity Is One Of The Noblest Emotions Available To Human Beings; Self-pity Is Possibly The Most Ignoble . . . . [it] Is An Incapacity, A Crippling Emotional Disease That Severely Distorts Our Perception Of Reality . . . A Narcotic That Leaves Its Addicts Wasted And Derelict.

But The Wisdom Of God Says Something Different: That We Can Act Ourselves Into A New Way Of Feeling Much Quicker Than We Can Feel Ourselves Into A New Way Of Acting. Worship Is An Act That Develops Feelings For God, Not A Feeling For God That Is Expressed In An Act Of Worship.

The Hard Work Of Sowing Seed In What Looks Like Perfectly Empty Earth Has A Time Of Harvest. All Suffering, Pain, Emptiness, Disappointment Is Seed: Sow It In God And He Will, Finally, Bring A Crop Of Joy From It.

God Is The Larger Context And Plot In Which Our Stories Find Themselves.

In High School I Was Very Much Involved In Poetry. You Cannot Read A Poem Quickly. There's Too Much Going On There. There Are Rhythms And Alliterations. You Have To Read Poetry Slow, Slow, Slow To Absorb It All.

American Culture Is Probably The Least Christian Culture That We've Ever Had Because It Is So Materialistic And It's So Full Of Lies. The Whole Advertising World Is Just, It's Just Intertwined With Lies, Appealing To The Worst Of The Instincts We Have.

A Person Has To Get Fed Up With The Ways Of The World Before He, Before She Acquires An Appetite For The World Of Grace.

There Is Something About Christmas That Requires A Rug Rat. Little Kids Make Christmas Fun. I Wonder If Could Rent One For The Holidays. When I Was Tiny We Would By A Real Tree And Stay Up Late Drinking Hot Chocolate And Finding Just The Right Place For The Special Decorations.

Christians Don't Simply Learn Or Study Or Use Scripture; We Assimilate It, Take It Into Our Lives In Such A Way That It Gets Metabolized Into Acts Of Love, Cups Of Cold Water, Missions Into All The World, Healing And Evangelism And Justice In Jesus' Name, Hands Raised In Adoration Of The Father, Feet Washed In Company With The Son.

God Made My Life Complete When I Placed All The Pieces Before Him. When I Got My Act Together, He Gave Me A Fresh Start. Now I'm Alert To God's Ways; I Don't Take God For Granted. My Job Is Not To Solve People's Problems Or Make Them Happy, But To Help Them See The Grace Operating In Their Lives.

Prayer Gets Us In On What God Is Doing.

This Kingdom Of God Life Is Not A Matter Of Waking Up Each Morning With A List Of Chores Or An Agenda To Be Tended To, Left On Our Bedside Table By The Holy Spirit For Us While We Slept. We Wake Up Already Immersed In A Large Story Of Creation And Covenant, Of Israel And Jesus, The Story Of Jesus And The Stories That Jesus Told. We Let Ourselves Be Formed By These Formative Stories, And Especially As We Listen To The Stories That Jesus Tells, Get A Feel For The Way He Does It, The Way He Talks, The Way He Treats People, The Jesus Way.

No Life Of Faith Can Be Lived Privately. There Must Be Overflow Into The Lives Of Others.

Religion Is A Very Scary Thing, Because A Pastor Is In A Position Of Power. And If You Use That Power Badly, You Ruin People's Lives, And You Ruin Your Own Life.

I Believe God Takes The Things In Our Lives - Family, Background, Education - And Uses Them As Part Of His Calling. It Might Not Be To Become A Pastor. But I Don't Think God Wastes Anything.

When We Sin And Mess Up Our Lives, We Find That God Doesn't Go Off And Leave Us- He Enters Into Our Trouble And Saves Us.

Every Call To Worship Is A Call Into The Real World.... I Encounter Such Constant And Widespread Lying About Reality Each Day And Meet With Such Skilled And Systematic Distortion Of The Truth That I'm Always In Danger Of Losing My Grip On Reality. The Reality, Of Course, Is That God Is Sovereign And Christ Is Savior. The Reality Is That Prayer Is My Mother Tongue And The Eucharist My Basic Food. The Reality Is That Baptism, Not Myers-briggs, Defines Who I Am.

There Is Nothing Terribly Difficult In The Bible - At Least In A Technical Way. The Bible Is Written In Street Language, Common Language. Most Of It Was Oral And Spoken To Illiterate People. They Were The First Ones To Receive It. So When We Make Everything Academic, We Lose Something.

Too Much Of The World's Happiness Depends On Taking From One To Satisfy Another. To Increase My Standard Of Living, Someone In Another Part Of The World Must Lower His. The Worldwide Crisis Of Hunger That We Face Today Is A Result Of That Method Of Pursuing Happiness. Industrialized Nations Acquire Appetites For More And More Luxuries And Higher And Higher Standards Of Living, And Increasing Numbers Of People Are Made Poor And Hungry. It Doesn't Have To Be That Way.

The Life Of Faith Is A Daily Exploration Of The Constant And Countless Ways In Which Gods Grace And Love Are Expereinced

Praying Puts Us At Risk Of Getting Involved In God's Conditions. Be Slow To Pray. Praying Most Often Doesn't Get Us What We Want But What God Wants, Something Quite At Variance With What We Conceive To Be In Our Best Interests.

Repentance Is A Realization That What God Wants From You And What You Want From God Are Not Going To Be Achieved By Doing The Same Old Things, Thinking The Same Old Thoughts. Repentance Is A Decision To Follow Jesus Christ And Become His Pilgrim In The Path Of Peace. Repentance Is The Most Practical Of All Words And The Most Practical Of All Acts. It Is A Feet-on-the-ground-kind-of-word. It Puts A Person In Touch With The Reality That God Creates.

People Learn To Shop For Churches; There Is No Loyalty To The Church. They're Consumers Being Attracted To One Product Or Another. I Think It's Sacrilege, To Tell You The Truth, It Really Is.

All The Persons Of Faith I Know Are Sinners, Doubters, Uneven Performers. We Are Secure Not Because We Are Sure Of Ourselves But Because We Trust That God Is Sure Of Us.

When We Submit Our Lives To What We Read In Scripture, We Find That We Are Not Being Led To See God In Our Stories But Our Stories In God's. God Is The Larger Context And Plot In Which Our Stories Find Themselves.

That's Why I Tell Stories: To Create Readiness, To Nudge The People Toward Receptive Insight. In Their Present State They Can Stare Till Doomsday And Not See It, Listen Till They're Blue In The Face And Not Get It.

Pastors Are Highly Susceptible To The Sin Of Sloth.

Wisdom Is The Art Of Living Skillfully In Whatever Actual Conditions We Find Ourselves.

Prayer Is The Disciplined Refusal To Act Before God Acts.

Sloth Is Most Often Evidenced In Busyness ... In Frantic Running Around, Trying To Be Everything To Everyone, And Then Having No Time To Listen Or Pray, No Time To Become The Person Who Is Doing These Things.
