The Gospel Is Never A Commentary On Ideas Or Cultures Or Conditions; It's Always About Actual Persons, Actual Pains, Actual Troubles, Actual Sin; You, Me; Who You Are And What You've Done; Who I Am And What I've Done.

There's Nobody Who Doesn't Have Problems With The Church, Because There's Sin In The Church. But There's No Other Place To Be A Christian Except The Church.

Like The Sacramental Use Of Water And Bread And Wine, Friendship Takes What's Common In Human Experience And Turns It Into Something Holy.

To Follow Jesus Implies That We Enter Into A Way Of Life That Is Given Character And Shape And Direction By The One Who Calls Us. To Follow Jesus Means Picking Up Rhythms And Ways Of Doing Things That Are Often Unsaid But Always Derivative From Jesus, Formed By The Influence Of Jesus. To Follow Jesus Means That We Can't Separate What Jesus Is Saying From What Jesus Is Doing And The Way That He Is Doing It. To Follow Jesus Is As Much, Or Maybe Even More, About Feet As It Is About Ears And Eyes" (the Way Of Jesus, Eugene H. Peterson, 22).

Praying Puts Us At Risk Of Getting Involved In God's Conditions. Be Slow To Pray. Praying Most Often Doesn't Get Us What We Want But What God Wants, Something Quite At Variance With What We Conceive To Be In Our Best Interests.

Pastors Are Highly Susceptible To The Sin Of Sloth.

I Will Not Try To Run My Own Life Or The Lives Of Others; That Is God's Business.

If We Don't Understand How Metaphor Works We Will Misunderstand Most Of What We Read In The Bible. No Matter How Carefully We Parse Our Hebrew And Greek Sentences, No Matter How Precisely We Use Our Dictionaries And Trace Our Etymologies, No Matter How Exactly We Define The Words On The Page, If We Do Not Appreciate The Way A Metaphor Works We Will Never Comprehend The Meaning Of The Text.

Classically, There Are Three Ways In Which Humans Try To Find Transcendence--religious Meaning--apart From God As Revealed Through The Cross Of Jesus: Through The Ecstasy Of Alcohol And Drugs, Through The Ecstasy Of Recreational Sex, Through The Ecstasy Of Crowds. Church Leaders Frequently Warn Against The Drugs And The Sex, But At Least, In America, Almost Never Against The Crowds.

Feelings Are Great Liars. If Christians Worshipped Only When They Felt Like It, There Would Be Precious Little Worship. We Think That If We Don’t Feel Something There Can Be No Authenticity In Doing It. But The Wisdom Of God Says Something Different: That We Can Act Ourselves Into A New Way Of Feeling Much Quicker Than We Can Feel Ourselves Into A New Way Of Acting. Worship Is An Act That Develops Feelings For God, Not A Feeling For God That Is Expressed In An Act Of Worship.

Prayer Is The Disciplined Refusal To Act Before God Acts.

Love Is Not A Word That Describes My Feelings; It Is Not A Technique By Which I Fulfill My Needs; It Is Not An Ideal, Abstract And Pure, On Which I Meditate Or Discourse. It Is Acting In Correspondence With Or In Response To God In Relation To Persons.

Repentance Is A Realization That What God Wants From You And What You Want From God Are Not Going To Be Achieved By Doing The Same Old Things, Thinking The Same Old Thoughts. Repentance Is A Decision To Follow Jesus Christ And Become His Pilgrim In The Path Of Peace. Repentance Is The Most Practical Of All Words And The Most Practical Of All Acts. It Is A Feet-on-the-ground-kind-of-word. It Puts A Person In Touch With The Reality That God Creates.

We've All Met A Certain Type Of Spiritual Person. She's A Wonderful Person. She Loves The Lord. She Prays And Reads The Bible All The Time. But All She Thinks About Is Herself. She's Not A Selfish Person. But She's Always At The Center Of Everything She's Doing.

I Think Pastors Are The Worst Listeners. We're So Used To Speaking, Teaching, Giving Answers. We Must Learn To Be Quiet, Quit Being So Verbal, Learn To Pay Attention To What's Going On, And Listen.

Count Yourself Lucky, How Happy You Must Be - You Get A Fresh Start, Your Slate's Wiped Clean. Count Yourself Lucky - God Holds Nothing Against You And You're Holding Nothing Back From Him.

Worship Does Not Satisfy Our Hunger For God; It Whets Our Appetite.

The Way Of Jesus Cannot Be Imposed Or Mapped — It Requires An Active Participation In Following Jesus As He Leads Us Through Sometimes Strange And Unfamiliar Territory, In Circumstances That Become Clear Only In The Hesitations And Questionings, In The Pauses And Reflections Where We Engage In Prayerful Conversation With One Another And With Him.

I Didn't Write Because I Had Anything To Say, But In Order To Find Out What There Was To Say.

The Role Of The Pastor Is To Embody The Gospel. And Of Course To Get It Embodied, Which You Can Only Do With Individuals, Not In The Abstract.

There Is Nothing Terribly Difficult In The Bible - At Least In A Technical Way. The Bible Is Written In Street Language, Common Language. Most Of It Was Oral And Spoken To Illiterate People. They Were The First Ones To Receive It. So When We Make Everything Academic, We Lose Something.

My Job Is Not To Solve People's Problems Or Make Them Happy, But To Help Them See The Grace Operating In Their Lives.

You Don't Make Your Words True By Embellishing Them With Religious Lace. In Making Your Speech Sound More Religious, It Becomes Less True.

People Are Not Problems To Be Solved. They Are Mysteries To Be Explored.

Spirituality Is No Different From What Weve Been Doing For Two Thousand Years Just By Going To Church And Receiving The Sacraments, Being Baptized, Learning To Pray, And Reading Scriptures Rightly. Its Just Ordinary Stuff.

We Wake Up Already Immersed In A Large Story Of Creation And Covenant, Of Israel And Jesus, The Story Of Jesus And The Stories That Jesus Told. We Let Ourselves Be Formed By These Formative Stories, And Especially As We Listen To The Stories That Jesus Tells, Get A Feel For The Way He Does It, The Way He Talks, The Way He Treats People, The Jesus Way.

Wisdom Is The Art Of Living Skillfully In Whatever Actual Conditions We Find Ourselves.

O God, When My Faith Gets Overladen With Dust, Blow It Clean With The Wind Of Your Spirit. When My Habits Of Obedience Get Stiff And Rusty, Anoint Them With The Oil Of Your Spirit. Restore The Enthusiasm Of My First Love For You.

The Poor Are Not A Problem To Be Solved But A People To Join.

Sloth Is Most Often Evidenced In Busyness ... In Frantic Running Around, Trying To Be Everything To Everyone, And Then Having No Time To Listen Or Pray, No Time To Become The Person Who Is Doing These Things.

There Are No Experts In The Company Of Jesus. We Are All Beginners, Necessarily Followers, Because We Don’t Know Where We Are Going.

People Learn To Shop For Churches; There Is No Loyalty To The Church. They're Consumers Being Attracted To One Product Or Another. I Think It's Sacrilege, To Tell You The Truth, It Really Is.

Prayer Gets Us In On What God Is Doing.

When We Sin And Mess Up Our Lives, We Find That God Doesn't Go Off And Leave Us- He Enters Into Our Trouble And Saves Us.

If You Don't Take A Sabbath, Something Is Wrong. You're Doing Too Much, You're Being Too Much In Charge. You've Got To Quit, One Day A Week, And Just Watch What God Is Doing When You're Not Doing Anything.

Too Much Of The World's Happiness Depends On Taking From One To Satisfy Another. To Increase My Standard Of Living, Someone In Another Part Of The World Must Lower His. The Worldwide Crisis Of Hunger That We Face Today Is A Result Of That Method Of Pursuing Happiness. Industrialized Nations Acquire Appetites For More And More Luxuries And Higher And Higher Standards Of Living, And Increasing Numbers Of People Are Made Poor And Hungry. It Doesn't Have To Be That Way.

When We Submit Our Lives To What We Read In Scripture, We Find That We Are Not Being Led To See God In Our Stories But Our Stories In God's. God Is The Larger Context And Plot In Which Our Stories Find Themselves.

Isn't It Interesting That All Of The Biblical Prophets And Psalmists Were Poets?

That's Why I Tell Stories: To Create Readiness, To Nudge The People Toward Receptive Insight. In Their Present State They Can Stare Till Doomsday And Not See It, Listen Till They're Blue In The Face And Not Get It.

Our Father In Heaven, Reveal Who You Are. Set The World Right; Do What's Best - As Above, So Below. Keep Us Alive With Three Square Meals. Keep Us Forgiven With You And Forgiving Others. Keep Us Safe From Ourselves And The Devil. You're In Charge!

The Only Opportunity You Will Ever Have To Live By Faith Is In The Circumstances You Are Provided This Very Day: This House You Live In, This Family You Find Yourself In, This Job You Have Been Given, The Weather Conditions That Prevail At The ...moment.

Religion Is A Very Scary Thing, Because A Pastor Is In A Position Of Power. And If You Use That Power Badly, You Ruin People's Lives, And You Ruin Your Own Life.

Exile (being Where We Don't Want To Be With People We Don't Want To Be With) Forces A Decision: Will I Focus My Attention On What Is Wrong With The World And Feel Sorry For Myself? Or Will I Focus My Energies On How I Can Live At My Best In This Place I Find Myself?...'i Will Do My Best With What Is Here.'

I Don't Want To End Up A Bureaucrat In The Time-management Business For God Or A Librarian Cataloguing Timeless Truths. Salvation Is Kicking In The Womb Of Creation Right Now, Any Time Now. Pay Attention.

The Minute The Church And Pastors Start Saying What Do People Want And Then Giving It To Them, We Betray Our Calling. We're Called To Have People Follow Jesus. We're Called To Have People Learn How To Forgive Their Enemies.

If People Don't Know Their Pastor, It's Easy To Put The Pastor On A Pedestal And Depersonalize Him Or Her. It's Also Easy For Pastors, Who Don't Know Their Congregations, Simply To Classify Congregants As Saved Or Unsaved, Involved Or Not Involved, Tithers Or Non-tithers.

Worship Is An Act That Develops Feelings For God, Not A Feeling For God That Is Expressed In An Act Of Worship.

The Spirit Works Through Community. Somebody Will Have A Stupid, Screwy Idea. That's Okay. The Point Of Having Creeds And Confessions And Traditions Is To Keep Us In Touch With The Obvious Errors.

The Life Of Faith Is A Daily Exploration Of The Constant And Countless Ways In Which Gods Grace And Love Are Expereinced

I Cannot Fail To Call The Congregation To Worship God, To Listen To His Word, To Offer Themselves To God.

Waiting Means Going About Our Assigned Tasks, Confident That God Will Provide The Meaning And The Conclusions.

The Latin Words Humus, Soil/earth, And Homo, Human Being, Have A Common Derivation, From Which We Also Get Our Word 'humble.' This Is The Genesis Origin Of Who We Are: Dust - Dust That The Lord God Used To Make Us A Human Being. If We Cultivate A Lively Sense Of Our Origin And Nurture A Sense Of Continuity With It, Who Knows, We May Also Acquire Humility.

When You Are Part Of A Megachurch You Have No Responsibility To Anybody Else.

One Of The Reasons That Christians Read Scripture Repeatedly And Carefully Is To Find Out Just How God Works In Jesus Christ So That We Can Work In The Name Of Jesus Christ.
