Pastors Need To Know What's Going On In The World And What Has Been Going On For 4,000 Years. We Need A Way To Read Scripture Which Is Imaginative, Interpretive.

Real Faith Is Refined In The Fires And Storms Of Pain.

Repentance Is A Realization That What God Wants From You And What You Want From God Are Not Going To Be Achieved By Doing The Same Old Things, Thinking The Same Old Thoughts. Repentance Is A Decision To Follow Jesus Christ And Become His Pilgrim In The Path Of Peace. Repentance Is The Most Practical Of All Words And The Most Practical Of All Acts. It Is A Feet-on-the-ground-kind-of-word. It Puts A Person In Touch With The Reality That God Creates.

Religion Is A Very Scary Thing, Because A Pastor Is In A Position Of Power. And If You Use That Power Badly, You Ruin People's Lives, And You Ruin Your Own Life.

Every Call To Worship Is A Call Into The Real World.... I Encounter Such Constant And Widespread Lying About Reality Each Day And Meet With Such Skilled And Systematic Distortion Of The Truth That I'm Always In Danger Of Losing My Grip On Reality. The Reality, Of Course, Is That God Is Sovereign And Christ Is Savior. The Reality Is That Prayer Is My Mother Tongue And The Eucharist My Basic Food. The Reality Is That Baptism, Not Myers-briggs, Defines Who I Am.

If You Keep The Sabbath, You Start To See Creation Not As Somewhere To Get Away From Your Ordinary Life, But A Place To Frame An Attentiveness To Your Life.

People Are Not Problems To Be Solved. They Are Mysteries To Be Explored.

When You Are Part Of A Megachurch You Have No Responsibility To Anybody Else.

We Cannot Be Too Careful About The Words We Use; We Start Out Using Them And They End Up Using Us.

Our Father In Heaven, Reveal Who You Are. Set The World Right; Do What's Best - As Above, So Below. Keep Us Alive With Three Square Meals. Keep Us Forgiven With You And Forgiving Others. Keep Us Safe From Ourselves And The Devil. You're In Charge!

The Vocation Of Pastor Has Been Replaced By The Strategies Of Religious Entrepreneurs With Business Plans.

If People Don't Know Their Pastor, It's Easy To Put The Pastor On A Pedestal And Depersonalize Him Or Her. It's Also Easy For Pastors, Who Don't Know Their Congregations, Simply To Classify Congregants As Saved Or Unsaved, Involved Or Not Involved, Tithers Or Non-tithers.

The Gospel Is Never About Everybody Else; It Is Always About You, About Me. The Gospel Is Never Truth In General; It's Always A Truth In Specific. The Gospel Is Never A Commentary On Ideas Or Cultures Or Conditions; It's Always About Actual Persons, Actual Pains, Actual Troubles, Actual Sin; You, Me; Who You Are And What You've Done; Who I Am And What I've Done.

Jesus Almost Never Talked In Terms Of Explaining. He Was Always Using Enigmatic Stories And Difficult Metaphors. He Was Always Pulling People Into Some Kind Of Participation.

Prayer Gets Us In On What God Is Doing.

The Silence That Makes It Possible To Hear God Speak Also Makes It Possible For Us To Hear The World's Words For What They Really Are - Tinny And Unconvincing Lies.

A Person Has To Get Fed Up With The Ways Of The World Before He, Before She Acquires An Appetite For The World Of Grace.

The Most Important Thing A Pastor Does Is Stand In A Pulpit Every Sunday And Say, 'let Us Worship God.' If That Ceases To Be The Primary Thing I Do In Terms Of My Energy, My Imagination, And The Way I Structure My Life, Then I No Longer Function As A Pastor.

In High School I Was Very Much Involved In Poetry. You Cannot Read A Poem Quickly. There's Too Much Going On There. There Are Rhythms And Alliterations. You Have To Read Poetry Slow, Slow, Slow To Absorb It All.

Spirituality Is No Different From What Weve Been Doing For Two Thousand Years Just By Going To Church And Receiving The Sacraments, Being Baptized, Learning To Pray, And Reading Scriptures Rightly. Its Just Ordinary Stuff.

Neither The Adventure Of Goodness Nor The Pursuit Of Righteousness Gets Headlines.

Count Yourself Lucky, How Happy You Must Be - You Get A Fresh Start, Your Slate's Wiped Clean. Count Yourself Lucky - God Holds Nothing Against You And You're Holding Nothing Back From Him.

If You Don't Take A Sabbath, Something Is Wrong. You're Doing Too Much, You're Being Too Much In Charge. You've Got To Quit, One Day A Week, And Just Watch What God Is Doing When You're Not Doing Anything.

People Learn To Shop For Churches; There Is No Loyalty To The Church. They're Consumers Being Attracted To One Product Or Another. I Think It's Sacrilege, To Tell You The Truth, It Really Is.

The Life Of Faith Isn't Meant For Tourists. It's Meant For Pilgrims.

That's Why I Tell Stories: To Create Readiness, To Nudge The People Toward Receptive Insight. In Their Present State They Can Stare Till Doomsday And Not See It, Listen Till They're Blue In The Face And Not Get It.

Worship Does Not Satisfy Our Hunger For God; It Whets Our Appetite.

Sloth Is Most Often Evidenced In Busyness ... In Frantic Running Around, Trying To Be Everything To Everyone, And Then Having No Time To Listen Or Pray, No Time To Become The Person Who Is Doing These Things.

The Latin Words Humus, Soil/earth, And Homo, Human Being, Have A Common Derivation, From Which We Also Get Our Word 'humble.' This Is The Genesis Origin Of Who We Are: Dust - Dust That The Lord God Used To Make Us A Human Being. If We Cultivate A Lively Sense Of Our Origin And Nurture A Sense Of Continuity With It, Who Knows, We May Also Acquire Humility.

Classically, There Are Three Ways In Which Humans Try To Find Transcendence--religious Meaning--apart From God As Revealed Through The Cross Of Jesus: Through The Ecstasy Of Alcohol And Drugs, Through The Ecstasy Of Recreational Sex, Through The Ecstasy Of Crowds. Church Leaders Frequently Warn Against The Drugs And The Sex, But At Least, In America, Almost Never Against The Crowds.

The Only Opportunity You Will Ever Have To Live By Faith Is In The Circumstances You Are Provided This Very Day: This House You Live In, This Family You Find Yourself In, This Job You Have Been Given, The Weather Conditions That Prevail At The ...moment.

The Role Of The Pastor Is To Embody The Gospel. And Of Course To Get It Embodied, Which You Can Only Do With Individuals, Not In The Abstract.

Like The Sacramental Use Of Water And Bread And Wine, Friendship Takes What's Common In Human Experience And Turns It Into Something Holy.

I Don't Want To End Up A Bureaucrat In The Time-management Business For God Or A Librarian Cataloguing Timeless Truths. Salvation Is Kicking In The Womb Of Creation Right Now, Any Time Now. Pay Attention.

O God, When My Faith Gets Overladen With Dust, Blow It Clean With The Wind Of Your Spirit. When My Habits Of Obedience Get Stiff And Rusty, Anoint Them With The Oil Of Your Spirit. Restore The Enthusiasm Of My First Love For You.

I Believe God Takes The Things In Our Lives - Family, Background, Education - And Uses Them As Part Of His Calling. It Might Not Be To Become A Pastor. But I Don't Think God Wastes Anything.

There's Nobody Who Doesn't Have Problems With The Church, Because There's Sin In The Church. But There's No Other Place To Be A Christian Except The Church.

God Made My Life Complete When I Placed All The Pieces Before Him. When I Got My Act Together, He Gave Me A Fresh Start. Now I'm Alert To God's Ways; I Don't Take God For Granted. Every Day I Review The Ways He Works; I Try Not To Miss A Trick. I Feel Put Back Together, And I'm Watching My Step. God Rewrote The Text Of My Life When I Opened The Book Of My Heart To His Eyes.

Pity Can Be Nearsighted And Condescending; Shared Suffering Can Be Dignifying And Life-changing.

To Follow Jesus Implies That We Enter Into A Way Of Life That Is Given Character And Shape And Direction By The One Who Calls Us. To Follow Jesus Means Picking Up Rhythms And Ways Of Doing Things That Are Often Unsaid But Always Derivative From Jesus, Formed By The Influence Of Jesus. To Follow Jesus Means That We Can't Separate What Jesus Is Saying From What Jesus Is Doing And The Way That He Is Doing It. To Follow Jesus Is As Much, Or Maybe Even More, About Feet As It Is About Ears And Eyes" (the Way Of Jesus, Eugene H. Peterson, 22).

Isn't It Interesting That All Of The Biblical Prophets And Psalmists Were Poets?

Praying Puts Us At Risk Of Getting Involved In God's Conditions. Be Slow To Pray. Praying Most Often Doesn't Get Us What We Want But What God Wants, Something Quite At Variance With What We Conceive To Be In Our Best Interests.

Wisdom Is The Art Of Living Skillfully In Whatever Actual Conditions We Find Ourselves.

Exile (being Where We Don't Want To Be With People We Don't Want To Be With) Forces A Decision: Will I Focus My Attention On What Is Wrong With The World And Feel Sorry For Myself? Church Is The Textured Context In Which We Grow Up In Christ To Maturity. But Church Is Difficult. Sooner Or Later, Though, If We Are Serious About Growing Up In Christ, We Have To Deal With Church. I Say Sooner.

The Poor Are Not A Problem To Be Solved But A People To Join.

I Get Asked, 'what Do You Miss Most About Being A Pastor?' I Think It's The Intimacy, The Incredible Gift Of Intimacy. You Go Through Death With Somebody, With Their Families, And There's An Intimacy That Comes Through That That Is Just Incomparable.

The Way Of Jesus Cannot Be Imposed Or Mapped — It Requires An Active Participation In Following Jesus As He Leads Us Through Sometimes Strange And Unfamiliar Territory, In Circumstances That Become Clear Only In The Hesitations And Questionings, In The Pauses And Reflections Where We Engage In Prayerful Conversation With One Another And With Him.

The Word 'christian' Means Different Things To Different People. To One Person It Means A Stiff, Upright, Inflexible Way Of Life, Colorless And Unbending. To Another It Means A Risky, Surprised-filled Adventure, Lived Tiptoe At The Edge Of Expectation...if We Get Our Information From The Biblical Material, There Is No Doubt That The Christian Life Is A Dancing, Leaping, Daring Life.

It Is Easier To Find Guides, Someone To Tell You What To Do, Than Someone To Be With You In A Discerning, Prayerful Companionship As You Work It Out Yourself. This Is What Spiritual Direction Is.

The Task Of The Prophet Is Not To Smooth Things Over But To Make Things Right.

The Religious Leader Is The Most Untrustworthy Of Leaders; In No Other Station Do We Have So Many Opportunities For Pride, Covetousness And Lust, And With So Many Excellent Disguises To Keep Such Ignobility From Being Found Out And Called To Account.

Pastors Are Highly Susceptible To The Sin Of Sloth.

It Is Not Easy To Convey A Sense Of Wonder, Let Alone Resurrection Wonder, To Another. It’s The Very Nature Of Wonder To Catch Us Off Guard, To Circumvent Expectations And Assumptions. Wonder Can’t Be Packaged, And It Can’t Be Worked Up. It Requires Some Sense Of Being There And Some Sense Of Engagement.

Stories Are Verbal Acts Of Hospitality.

It's Essential For Us To Develop An Imagination That Is Participatory. Art Is The Primary Way In Which This Happens. It's The Primary Way In Which We Become What We See Or Hear.

There Are No Experts In The Company Of Jesus. We Are All Beginners, Necessarily Followers, Because We Don’t Know Where We Are Going.

I Will Not Try To Run My Own Life Or The Lives Of Others; That Is God's Business.

One Of The Reasons That Christians Read Scripture Repeatedly And Carefully Is To Find Out Just How God Works In Jesus Christ So That We Can Work In The Name Of Jesus Christ.

I Think Pastors Are The Worst Listeners. We're So Used To Speaking, Teaching, Giving Answers. We Must Learn To Be Quiet, Quit Being So Verbal, Learn To Pay Attention To What's Going On, And Listen.

The Hard Work Of Sowing Seed In What Looks Like Perfectly Empty Earth Has A Time Of Harvest. All Suffering, Pain, Emptiness, Disappointment Is Seed: Sow It In God And He Will, Finally, Bring A Crop Of Joy From It.

No Life Of Faith Can Be Lived Privately. There Must Be Overflow Into The Lives Of Others.

Feelings Are Great Liars. If Christians Worshipped Only When They Felt Like It, There Would Be Precious Little Worship. We Think That If We Don’t Feel Something There Can Be No Authenticity In Doing It. But The Wisdom Of God Says Something Different: That We Can Act Ourselves Into A New Way Of Feeling Much Quicker Than We Can Feel Ourselves Into A New Way Of Acting. Worship Is An Act That Develops Feelings For God, Not A Feeling For God That Is Expressed In An Act Of Worship.
