I Came Out With A Book Called The True Secret Of Writing: Connecting Life With Language. It's A Book That Describes How Writing Is A Practice And How My Teaching Is Part Of That Practice. I Direct The Writing And Create Books But Underneath, There's Always The River Of Practice Happening. No Good, No Bad. Just Do It.

The First Thing Is How Awful Cancer Was, The Experience. When You First Go Through It, You're Just Trying To Survive. But When I Wrote About It, I Really Digested It. It Was Unbearable But I Had Practice Behind Me.

I Had Cancer For Fourteen Months And Wrote A Memoir About The Experience.

The Things That Make You A Functional Citizen In Society - Manners, Discretion, Cordiality - Don't Necessarily Make You A Good Writer. Writing Needs Raw Truth, Wants Your Suffering And Darkness On The Table, Revels In A Cutting Mind That Takes No Prisoners.

First Thoughts Have Tremendous Energy. The Internal Censor Usually Squelches Them, So We Live In The Realm Of Second And Third Thoughts, Thoughts On Thought, Twice And Three Times Removed From The Direct Connection Of The First Fresh Flash.

The Odd Thing Is, That I Wrote The Great Spring While I Had Cancer And It's Not About Cancer. It Was After I Was Done With Cancer That I Wrote A Book About It.

It's Okay To Embark On Writing Because You Think It Will Get You Love. At Least It Gets You Going, But It Doesn't Last. After A While You Realize That No One Cares That Much. Then You Find Another Reason: Money. You Can Dream On That One While The Bills Pile Up. Then You Think: "well, I'm The Sensitive Type. I Have To Express Myself." Do Me A Favor. Don't Be So Sensitive. Be Tough. It Will Get You Further Along When You Get Rejected. Finally, You Just Do It Because You Happen To Like It.

In The West, A Teacher Imparts Knowledge To A Student. In The East, A Teacher Transmits Nothing More Or Less Than His Or Her Being.

When You Bring The Darkness To The Table, It Doesn't Rule You Or Hurt Other People, But When We Keep It Secret, It's Dangerous.

I Don't Think Everyone Wants To Create The Great American Novel, But We All Have A Dream Of Telling Our Stories-of Realizing What We Think, Feel, And See Before We Die. Writing Is A Path To Meet Ourselves And Become Intimate.

I Often Wonder If All The Writers Who Are Alcoholics Drink A Lot Because They Aren't Writing. It Is Not Because They Are Writers That They Are Drinking, But Because They Are Writers Who Are Not Writing.

Out Of This Fertile Soil Bloom Our Poems And Stories. But This Does Not Come All At Once. It Takes Time. Continue To Turn Over And Over The Organic Details Of Your Life Until Some Of Them Fall Through The Garbage Of Discursive Thoughts To The Solid Ground Of Black Soil.

You Don't Need To Go To A Therapist, You Don't Need To Do All Kinds Of Things. If You Want To Write, You Physically Have To Do It.

Stress Is Basically A Disconnection From The Earth, A Forgetting Of The Breath. Stress Is An Ignorant State. It Believes That Everything Is An Emergency. Nothing Is That Important. Just Lie Down.

Let's Say I've Directed That [writing] Energy Into Writing My Latest Book But Suddenly, I Really Want To Write About An Onion. I Don't Say To Myself, "no, You Have Stay On The Subject," Because I Know That The Longer I Stay On The Subject The More Boring I Get. So Even Though I Couldn't Bear Writing About Cancer, I Faced It Every Day.

I Am Free To Write The Worst Junk In The World.

Literature Gives Us The Great Gift Of The Present Moment.

Actually, Every Time We Begin, We Wonder How We Did It Before, Each Time Is A New Journey With No Maps.

We Have To Accept Ourselves In Order To Write. Now None Of Us Does That Fully: Few Of Us Do It Even Halfway. Don’t Wait For One Hundred Percent Acceptance Of Yourself Before You Write, Or Even Eight Percent Acceptance. Just Write. The Process Of Writing Is An Activity That Teaches Us About Acceptance.

You Practice Whether You Want To Or Not. You Don't Wait Around For Inspiration And A Deep Desire To Run ... That's How Writing Is Too ... One Of The Main Aims In Writing Practice Is To Learn To Trust Your Own Mind And Body; To Grow Patient And Nonaggressive.

This Is What Metaphor Is. It Is Not Saying That An Ant Is An Elephant. Perhaps; Both Are Alive. No. Metaphor Is Saying The Ant Is An Elephant. Now, Logically Speaking, I Know There Is A Difference. It Used To Be With Chocolate. I Would Put Chocolate In My Studio And Say, "you Know, Nat, There's This Chocolate You Can Have If You Get Over There." And Usually If I Got Over There, I Would Start Writing. Sometimes I Need Get Out Of The House And Go To A Café And Write. Sometimes I'll Write With Other Friends To Get Myself Going. And Sometimes I Just Say "ok, Nat, Enough. Go One Hour. Keep Your Hand Going." I'll Do Whatever It Takes.

While I Had Cancer, I Wrote These Twenty-two Personal Essays About How I Lived My Life Backed By Zen And Writing.

A Responsibility Of Literature Is To Make People Awake, Present, Alive. If The Writer Wanders, Then The Reader, Too, Will Wander.

We Never Graduate From First Grade. Over And Over, We Have To Go Back To The Beginning.

You Don't Know What You're Doing. You're Just Hoping That People Won't Make Fun Of You. I Had No Idea How It Would Turn Out.

So Writing Is Not Just Writing. It Is Also Having A Relationship With Other Writers. And Don't Be Jealous, Especially Secretly. That's The Worst Kind. If Someone Writes Something Great, It's Just More Clarity In The World For All Of Us.

Use Loneliness. Its Ache Creates Urgency To Reconnect With The World. Take That Aching And Use It To Propel You Deeper Into Your Need For Expression - To Speak, To Say Who You Are.

I Read Eve Ensler And Thought It Was Fabulous. Not Only That, But It Was Really The Only Thing I Could Relate To About Cancer.

You'll Lose Your Reader If You Are Vague, Not Clear, And Not Present. We Love Details, Personal Connections, Stories.

What Writing Practice, Like Zen Practice Does Is Bring You Back To The Natural State Of Mind...the Mind Is Raw, Full Of Energy, Alive And Hungry. It Does Not Think In The Way We Were Brought Up To Think-well-mann Ered, Congenial.

Every Moment Is Enormous And It Is All We Have.

I Have Students That I Tell, "if Your Book Doesn't Sell Or You Can't Publish It, Write Another Book. Quit Sitting Around." The Publishing World Is A Business, But It's Not Any Big Deal. An Editor Is Not Your Guru. Your Agent Is Not Your Guru.

Use Original Detail In Your Writing. Life Is So Rich, If You Can Write Down The Real Details Of The Way Things Were And Are, You Hardly Need Anything Else.

When We Write We Begin To Taste The Texture Of Our Own Mind

Nobody Cares Much Whether You Write Or Not. You Just Have To Do It

If You Are Not Afraid Of The Voices Inside You, You Will Not Fear The Critics Outside You.
