It Is Simply That Person's Time. Ours Will Come In This Lifetime Or The Next. No Matter. Continue To Practice.

We Walk Through So Many Myths Of Each Other And Ourselves; We Are So Thankful When Someone Sees Us For Who We Are And Accepts Us.

First, Consider The Pen You Write With. It Should Be A Fast-writing Pen Because Your Thoughts Are Always Much Faster Than Your Hand. You Don't Want To Slow Up Your Hand Even More With A Slow Pen. A Ballpoint, A Pencil, A Felt Tip, For Sure, Are Slow. Go To A Stationery Store And See What Feels Good To You. Try Out Different Kinds. Don't Get Too Fancy And Expensive. I Mostly Use A Cheap Sheaffer Fountain Pen, About $1.95.... You Want To Be Able To Feel The Connection And Texture Of The Pen On Paper.

Finally, If You Want To Write, You Have To Just Shut Up, Pick Up A Pen, And Do It. I'm Sorry There Are No True Excuses. This Is Our Life. Step Forward. Maybe It's Only For Ten Minutes. That's Okay. To Write Feels Better Than All The Excuses.

Friends Open The Door For Me To Write. Then I Get Paid Attention To And It Allows Me To Write Other Books. The Great Spring And The Thirtieth Anniversary Of Bones Just Came Out And While I'm Happy And Excited About That, I've Already Finished A New Book. That's What Practice Does. You Don't Get Caught.

Life Is Not Orderly. No Matter How We Try To Make It So, Right In The Middle Of It We Die, Lose A Leg, Fall In Love, Or Drop A Jar Of Applesauce.

Poems Are Taught As Though The Poet Has Put A Secret Key In His Words And It Is The Reader's Job To Find It. Poems Are Not Mystery Novels.

In Writing Practice, There's No Direction. You Enter Your Own Mind And Follow It Where It Takes You. We Have A Great Need To Connect With Our Own Mind And Our Own True Self. And All Of Us Have A Story To Tell.

Learning To Write Is Not A Linear Process. There Is No Logical A-to-b-to-c Way To Become A Good Writer. One Neat Truth About Writing Cannot Answer It All. There Are Many Truths. To Do Writing Practice Means To Deal Ultimately With Your Whole Life.

You Live And Then You Die, I Thought. It's Good To Have Some Good Times.

When You Write, Don't Say, "i'm Going To Write A Poem." That Attitude Will Freeze You Right Away. Sit Down With The Least Expectation Of Yourself; Say, "i Am Free To Write The Worst Junk In The World."

Watch Yourself. Every Minute We Change. It Is A Great Opportunity. At Any Point, We Can Step Out Of Our Frozen Selves And Our Ideas And Begin Fresh.

One Poem Or Story Doesn't Matter One Way Or The Other. It's The Process Of Writing And Life That Matters.

We Are Searching For The Core Of Our Lives; Our Culture Intuits That Writing, That Ancient Activity, Might Be The Pathway...awakening Does Not Feed Ego's Needs And Desires; It Pulverizes The Self. Our Society Couldn't Knowingly Bear Such Reduction, So We've Tricked Ourselves Into The Same Path But Call It Writing.

Whether We Know It Or Not, We Transmit The Presence Of Everyone We Have Ever Known, As Though By Being In Each Other's Presence We Exchange Our Cells, Pass On Some Of Our Lifeforce, And Then We Go On Carrying That Person In Our Body, Not Unlike Springtime When Certain Plants In Fields We Walk Through Attach Their Seeds In The Form Of Small Burrs To Our Socks, Our Pants, Our Caps, As If To Say, 'go On, Take Us With You, Carry Us To Root In Another Place.' This Is How We Survive Long After We Are Dead. This Is Why It Is Important Who We Become, Because We Pass It On.

I Honor English Majors. It's A Dumb Thing To Major In. It Leads Nowhere. It's Good To Be Dumb, It Allows Us To Love Something For No Reason. That's The Best Kind Of Love.

So Even Though I Couldn't Bear Writing About Cancer, I Faced It Every Day.

We Always Worry That We Are Copying Someone Else, That We Don't Have Our Own Style. Don't Worry. Writing Is A Communal Act. Contrary To Popular Belief, A Writer Is Not Prometheus Alone On A Hill Full Of Fire. We Are Very Arrogant To Think We Alone Have A Totally Original Mind. We Are Carried On The Backs Of All The Writers Who Came Before Us. We Live In The Present With All The History, Ideas, And Soda Pop Of This Time. It All Gets Mixed Up In Our Writing.

As Writers We Need To Crack Open Language.

I Consider Writing Practice A True Zen Practice Because It All Comes Back At You. You Can't Fool Anyone Because It's On The Page.

Use Loneliness. Its Ache Creates Urgency To Reconnect With The World. Take That Aching And Use It To Propel You Deeper Into Your Need For Expression - To Speak, To Say Who You Are.

Tulips Come Up In Spring For No Reason. Of Course, You Planted Bulbs And Now In April The Earth Warms Up. But Why? For No Reason Except Gravity. Why Gravity? For No Reason. And Why Did You Plant Red Tulip Bulbs To Begin With? For Beauty, Which Is Itself And Has No Reason. So The World Is Empty. Things Rise And Fall For No Reason. And What A Great Opportunity That Is! You Can Start Writing Again At Any Minute. Let Go Of All Your Failures And Sit Down And Write Something Great. Or Write Something Terrible And Feel Great About It.

Be Awake To The Details Around You, But Don't Be Self-conscious.

When You Are Not Writing, You Are A Writer Too. It Doesn't Leave You.

Don't Let Yourself Be Thrown Away....continue On No Matter What....continue To Make A Positive Effort For The Good.

Understand That Writing Is Like An Athletic Activity. To Play Tennis Well, You Expect To Keep Practicing, But For Some Reason With Writing, You Think You Should Come Out Fresh The First Time.

I Hear People Say They're Going To Write. I Ask, When? They Give Me Vague Statements. Indefinite Plans Get Dubious Results. Really You Don't Need More Information. If You've Lived Twenty Years, You Probably Have Enough Material For The Rest Of Your Life

This Is Your Life. You Are Responsible For It. You Will Not Live Forever. Don't Wait.

The Harder You Chase Something, The Faster You Go And The Less You're Able To Let Life Meet Life. If You're Having Difficulty Coming Up With New Ideas, Then Slow Down.

Women Are Wonderful, But They Get So Caught Up About Their Body. We Need To Unhook From Worrying So Much. When I Don't Feel Good, I Look In The Mirror And Think I Look Fat And Miserable. But When I Feel Good And Whole, I'm Not Worried About My Body Because I'm Living In It. It Doesn't Become An Object.

Writers End Up Writing About Their Obsessions. Things That Haunt Them; Things They Can’t Forget; Stories They Carry In Their Bodies Waiting To Be Released.

Our Bodies Are Garbage Heaps: We Collect Experience, And From The Decomposition Of The Thrown-out Eggshells, Spinach Leaves, Coffee Grinds, And Old Steak Bones Out Of Our Minds Come Nitrogen, Heat, And Very Fertile Soil. Out Of This Fertile Soil Bloom Our Poems And Stories. But This Does Not Come All At Once. It Takes Time. Continue To Turn Over And Over The Organic Details Of Your Life Until Some Of Them Fall Through The Garbage Of Discursive Thoughts To The Solid Ground Of Black Soil.

Clarity And Perseverance Are Difficult In American Society Because The Basis Of Capitalism Is Greed And Dissatisfaction.

Ultimately, Writing Is About Trusting Your Own Mind. It Is An Act Of Discovery.

Creativity Exists In The Present Moment. You Can't Find It Anywhere Else.

There's An Old Adage In Writing: 'don't Tell, But Show.' Writing Is Not Psychology. We Do Not Talk 'about' Feelings. Instead The Writer Feels And Through Her Words Awakens Those Feelings In The Reader. The Writer Takes The Reader's Hand And Guides Him Through The Valley Of Sorrow And Joy Without Ever Having To Mention Those Words.

If You Feel Bored Or Uncomfortable As You're Writing, Ask Yourself What's Bothering You And Write About That. Sometimes Your Creative Energy Is Like Water In A Kinked Hose, And Before Thoughts Can Flow On The Topic At Hand, You Have To Straighten The Hose By Attending To Whatever Is Preoccupying You.

Actually, When I Look At My Old Notebooks, I Think I Have Been A Bit Self-indulgent And Have Given Myself Too Much Time To Meander In My Discursive Thoughts. I Could Have Cut Through Sooner. Yet It Is Good To Know About Our Terrible Selves, Not Laud Or Criticize Them, Just Acknowledge Them. Then, Out Of This Knowledge, We Are Better Equipped To Make A Choice For Beauty, Kind Consideration And Clear Truth. We Make This Choice With Our Feet Firmly On The Ground. We Are Not Running Wildly After Beauty With Fear At Our Backs.
