Stress Is Basically A Disconnection From The Earth, A Forgetting Of The Breath.

Our Bodies Are Garbage Heaps: We Collect Experience, And From The Decomposition Of The Thrown-out Eggshells, Spinach Leaves, Coffee Grinds, And Old Steak Bones Out Of Our Minds Come Nitrogen, Heat, And Very Fertile Soil. Out Of This Fertile Soil Bloom Our Poems And Stories. But This Does Not Come All At Once. It Takes Time. Continue To Turn Over And Over The Organic Details Of Your Life Until Some Of Them Fall Through The Garbage Of Discursive Thoughts To The Solid Ground Of Black Soil.

You'll Lose Your Reader If You Are Vague, Not Clear, And Not Present. We Love Details, Personal Connections, Stories.

Because I've Been Doing My Practice For So Long, I Knew What To Do Even Under Really Hard Circumstances.

The Muscles Of Writing Are Not So Visible, But They Are Just As Powerful: Determination, Attention, Curiosity, A Passionate Heart.

I Consider Writing Practice A True Zen Practice Because It All Comes Back At You. You Can't Fool Anyone Because It's On The Page.

To Encounter A Fine Book And Have Time To Read It Is A Wonderful Thing.

In The Past Few Years I've Assigned Books To Be Read Before A Student Attends One Of My Weeklong Seminars. I Have Been Astonished By How Few People -- People Who Supposedly Want To Write -- Read Books, And If They Read Them, How Little They Examine Them.

You Don't Need To Go To A Therapist, You Don't Need To Do All Kinds Of Things. If You Want To Write, You Physically Have To Do It.

It Is Odd That We Never Question The Feasibility Of A Football Team Practicing Long Hours For One Game; Yet In Writing We Rarely Give Ourselves The Space For Practice.

We Must Remember That Everything Is Ordinary And Extraordinary. It Is Our Minds That Either Open Or Close.

Clarity And Perseverance Are Difficult In American Society Because The Basis Of Capitalism Is Greed And Dissatisfaction.

Have Compassion For Yourself When You Write. There Is No Failure - Just A Big Field To Wander In.

Let's Say I've Directed That [writing] Energy Into Writing My Latest Book But Suddenly, I Really Want To Write About An Onion. I Don't Say To Myself, "no, You Have Stay On The Subject," Because I Know That The Longer I Stay On The Subject The More Boring I Get. So, If My Mind Wants To Write About An Onion, It Might Be A Deeper Way To Go Into What I'm Working On, Even Though It Might Seem Irrelevant. This Is How I've Learned To Follow My Mind.

Whether We Know It Or Not, We Transmit The Presence Of Everyone We Have Ever Known, As Though By Being In Each Other's Presence We Exchange Our Cells, Pass On Some Of Our Lifeforce, And Then We Go On Carrying That Person In Our Body, Not Unlike Springtime When Certain Plants In Fields We Walk Through Attach Their Seeds In The Form Of Small Burrs To Our Socks, Our Pants, Our Caps, As If To Say, 'go On, Take Us With You, Carry Us To Root In Another Place.' This Is How We Survive Long After We Are Dead. This Is Why It Is Important Who We Become, Because We Pass It On.

Trust In What You Love, Continue To Do It, And It Will Take You Where You Need To Go. And Don't Worry Too Much About Security. You Will Eventually Have A Deep Security When You Begin To Do What You Want.

I Often Wonder If All The Writers Who Are Alcoholics Drink A Lot Because They Aren't Writing. It Is Not Because They Are Writers That They Are Drinking, But Because They Are Writers Who Are Not Writing.

Use Loneliness. Its Ache Creates Urgency To Reconnect With The World. Take That Aching And Use It To Propel You Deeper Into Your Need For Expression - To Speak, To Say Who You Are.

This Is What Metaphor Is. It Is Not Saying That An Ant Is An Elephant. Perhaps; Both Are Alive. No. Metaphor Is Saying The Ant Is An Elephant. Now, Logically Speaking, I Know There Is A Difference. If You Put Elephants And Ants Before Me, I Believe That Every Time I Will Correctly Identify The Elephant And The Ant. So Metaphor Must Come From A Very Different Place Than That Of The Logical, Intelligent Mind. It Comes From A Place That Is Very Courageous, Willing To Step Out Of Our Preconceived Ways Of Seeing Things And Open So Large That It Can See The Oneness In An Ant And In An Elephant.

In The End, You Have To Just Sit Down, Shut Up, And Write.

I Think Book Publishing Is Fun, But I Also Know I've Been Very Lucky.

Finally, One Just Has To Shut Up, Sit Down, And Write.

Writing Is The Act Of Discovery.

Choose Your Tools Carefully, But Not So Carefully That You Get Uptight Or Spend More Time At The Stationery Store Than At Your Writing Table.

Sometimes People Say To Me, “i Want To Write, But I Have Five Kids, A Full-time Job, A Wife Who Beats Me, A Tremendous Debt To My Parents,” And So On. I Say To Them, “there Is No Excuse. If You Want To Write, Write. This Is Your Life. You Are Responsible For It. You Will Not Live Forever. Don’t Wait. Make The Time Now, Even If It Is Ten Minutes Once A Week."

And Why Did You Plant Red Tulip Bulbs To Begin With? For Beauty, Which Is Itself And Has No Reason. So The World Is Empty. Things Rise And Fall For No Reason. And What A Great Opportunity That Is! You Can Start Writing Again At Any Minute. Let Go Of All Your Failures And Sit Down And Write Something Great. Or Write Something Terrible And Feel Great About It.

We Always Worry That We Are Copying Someone Else, That We Don't Have Our Own Style. Don't Worry. Writing Is A Communal Act. The Things That Make You A Functional Citizen In Society - Manners, Discretion, Cordiality - Don't Necessarily Make You A Good Writer. Writing Needs Raw Truth, Wants Your Suffering And Darkness On The Table, Revels In A Cutting Mind That Takes No Prisoners.

Writing Can Teach Us The Dignity Of Speaking The Truth.

Don't Let Yourself Be Thrown Away....continue On No Matter What....continue To Make A Positive Effort For The Good.

Poetry Has Never Been A Favorite American Pastime.

We Have To Accept Ourselves In Order To Write. Now None Of Us Does That Fully: Few Of Us Do It Even Halfway. Don’t Wait For One Hundred Percent Acceptance Of Yourself Before You Write, Or Even Eight Percent Acceptance. Just Write. The Process Of Writing Is An Activity That Teaches Us About Acceptance.

Anything We Fully Do Is An Alone Journey.

If You Feel Bored Or Uncomfortable As You're Writing, Ask Yourself What's Bothering You And Write About That.
