We Breed Dogs To Be More Social Than The Wolf. There Is Very Interesting Research That Has Been Done With A Wolf And A Domestic Dog. If You Have A Tamed Wolf And You Have Him Sit In Front Of The Experimenter Or Stand In Front Of His Master And His Two Dishes, One To The Right, One To The Left – So That The Dog Or Wolf See The Food Put In The Left Hand Dish But The Owner Points To The Right – The Domesticated Will Go Where Owner Points, Whereas The The Wolf Goes Right Where He Saw The Meat Thing Put. In Other Words, In A Dog Social Cue From A Master Can Override Where He Saw The Being Placed.

Cats Are Great With Clicker Training. There's A Great Video You Can Get Called "clicker Magic". There's A Scene In That Video Where A Cat Is Trained To Go Through A Mini Dog Agility Course - It's All Done With Food Motivation And Clicker Training. You Can Train Them To Do All Sorts Of Thing.

The Thing About Being Autistic Is That You Gradually Get Less And Less Autistic, Because You Keep Learning, You Keep Learning How To Behave. It's Like Being In A Play; I'm Always In A Play.

Some Autistic Children Cannot Stand The Sound Of Certain Voices. I Have Come Across Cases Where Teachers Tell Me That Certain Children Have Problems With Their Voice Or Another Person's Voice. This Problem Tends To Be Related To High-pitched Ladies' Voices.

My Mother Was Always Expanding My Art Skills And Getting Me To Paint Different Things. You Always Got To Push Some. And, I Mean, I Learned Basic Things Like Getting Up On Time, How To Shop - You Know, You Don't Touch Things In A Store You're Not Going To Buy. These Things Were Taught Very Young. I Don't See Today Enough Of This Basic, You Know, Basic Skill Teaching.

Animals Are Like Autistic Savants. In Fact, I'd Go So Far As To Say That Animals Might Actually Be Autistic Savants. Animals Have Special Talents Normal People Don't, The Same Way Autistic People Have Special Talents Normal People Don't; And At Least Some Animals Have Special Forms Of Genius Normal People Don't, The Same Way Some Autistic Savants Have Special Forms Of Genius. I Think Most Of The Time Animal Genius Probably Happens For The Same Reason Autistic Genius Does: A Difference In The Brain Autistic People Share With Animals.

In Special Education, There's Too Much Emphasis Placed On The Deficit And Not Enough On The Strength.

How Do You Have A Think In Pictures? Well, You Have To Sort The Pictures Into Categories. You Know, For Example, A Dog Knows That, You Know, There's Good People And There's Bad People. And I Talked To A Lady The Other Day Where Her Dog Was Afraid Of People With White Beards Because She Had Adopted Him From An Animal Shelter And Somebody With A White Beard Had Abused Him. And This Dog Was Now Afraid Of Everybody That Had A White Beard. That Was The Bad Category.

Now There Are A Few Things With A Shelter - Like With Noise Control, Don't Face Dog Runs Facing Each Other That Tends To Encourage Barking. The Problem You've Got Is That The Kind Of Materials That Absorb Noise Are Difficult To Clean. One Of The Biggest Problems In The Design Of Animal Shelters Is That Animals Are Barking And It's Like The Sound Of A Jet Plane Taking Off.

I'm Seeing Too Many Kids Where They Get Fixated On Their Own Autism. I'd Rather Have Them Get Fixated That They Like Programming Computers Or They Like Art Or They Want To Sing In The Church Choir Or They Want To Train Dogs, You Know, Something That They Can Turn Into A Career.

I Use My Mind To Solve Problems And Invent Things.

People On The Autism Spectrum Don't Think The Same Way You Do. In My Life, People Who Made A Difference Were Those Who Didn't See Labels, Who Believed In Building On What Was There. These Were People Who Didn't Try To Drag Me Into Their World, But Came Into Mine Instead.

I Think A Brain Can Be Made "more Thinking" Or Made "more Emotional." At What Point Does This Become Abnormal? Autism In Its Milder Variants, I Think, Is Part Of Normal Human Variation.

I've Been On Antidepressants For Years, And It Worked To Stop My Anxiety And Didn't Limit Creativity. Some Of The Best Work I've Done, In Fact, Is After I Started Taking The Antidepressants.

If They Want Something, Then They Need To Learn To Request That Thing.

You Can Be Honest Without Sharing Your Opinions On Everything.

Language Just Gradually Came In, One Or Two Stressed Words A Time. Before Then, I Would Just Scream. I Couldn't Talk. I Couldn't Get My Words Out. So The Only Way I Could Tell Someone What I Wanted Was To Scream. If I Didn't Want To Wear A Hat, The Only Way I Knew To Communicate Was Screaming And Throwing It On The Floor.

One Of The Ways To Reduce That Barking Would Be To Have Volunteers Come In Especially For Hte For The Dogs And Take Each Dog Out For 45 Minutes Each Day And Spend Quality Time With The Person - That Would Help Reduce The Stress And In Fact, One Of My Students Did A Study On That.

I'm Seeing Too Many Kind Of Socially Awkward Kids That Get Through Schools And Then They Can't Hold A Job Because They Haven't Learned The Discipline Of Get Up In The Morning.

From A Scientific Standpoint, Aspergers And Autism Are One Syndrome. Aspergers Is Part Of The Autism Spectrum, Not A Separate Disorder.

You Take Somebody - One Person Has Definitely Got Autism, You Got Another Person That Maybe Has Some Of Those Traits And Maybe There's Some Anxiety, Depression, Some Epilepsy Or Something In The Family History. I Can Think Back To When I Was In High School, This Is 40 Years Ago, I Could Name Kids In My High School Class And College Class That, Today, Would Be Diagnosed As Aspergers.

To Understand Animal Thinking You've Got To Get Away From A Language.

The Thing Is, Autism Is All Different, You Know, Variables. You Can See These Things In Horses And Cattle, And I Think That Some Of These People Are Just Really Good At Picking Up These Signals, But They Don't Realize It.

I'm Seeing Too Many Geeky, Nerdy Kids Get Addicted To Video Games And They're Going Nowhere. It's Making Me Crazy.

I Believe That The Best Way To Create Good Living Conditions For Any Animal, Whether It's A Captive Animal Living In A Zoo, A Farm Animal Or A Pet, Is To Base Animal Welfare Programs On The Core Emotion Systems In The Brain. My Theory Is That The Environment Animals Live In Should Activate Their Positive Emotions As Much As Possible, And Not Activate Their Negative Emotions Any More Than Necessary. If We Get The Animal's Emotions Rights, We Will Have Fewer Problem Behaviors... All Animals And People Have The Same Core Emotion Systems In The Brain.

Normal People Have An Incredible Lack Of Empathy. If You Have A 2-year-old Who Is Non-verbal, Don't Wait Until You Get A Diagnosis At 4. The Child Needs One-on-one Teaching With An Effective Teacher Now. This Can Be A Grandmother Or A Teacher Or Someone From The Community. Grandmothers Are Especially Great. There Are A Lot Of Grannies Around. Go To Your Church For Help.

I'm A Big Believer In Getting Kids Involved In Things Where There's A Shared Interest Because That's Where They Can Have Friends.

When I Was Diagnosed, Mothers Were Blamed For Causing Autism. There Was No Autism Support. They'd Put Autistic Kids In Institutions. I Had Severe Autism. But My Mom Wouldn't Accept That. I Was Put In Speech Therapy. My Mother Was Always Pushing Me To Do Stuff.

I Played Around With Vegetarianism Back In The '70s. One Thing, My Physiology Just Got To Have Animal Protein. I Get Hypoglycemic, I Get All Light-headed Unless I Eat Animal Protein.

I Think Sometimes Parents And Teachers Fail To Stretch Kids. My Mother Had A Very Good Sense Of How To Stretch Me Just Slightly Outside My Comfort Zone.

I Know A Lot Of Animal Communicators And I Think A Lot Of Them Are Just Good Behaviorists Because They Pick Up On A Lot Little Posture Things Like How The Eyes Look, The Posture Of The Cat Ears, Is It Tense? They're Picking Up Just A Lot Of Their Body Cues From The Dog, The Cat Or The Horse.

I'm A Child Of The 50s. I Was Expected To Have Table Manners. There Needs To Be Some Expectations For Behavior. I'm Seeing Some Children Today, They Don't Push Them Enough.

One Of The Places Where Research Is Needed Is All The Sensory Problems. And You Get Sensory Problems Not Just With Autism, But With Dyslexia, Learning Problems, Adhd, Attention Deficit, You Know, Things Like Sound Sensitivity, Problems With Fluorescent Lighting.

A Real Common Problem With A Lot Of Animals Is That Guys Are Bad, Hate To Say It, But They Will Tune Into Some Big Feature Like The Glasses, Maybe The Beard, Baseball Hats, You Know Some Unique Feature Like That. I've Got A Lot Of People That Are Really Good At Taming Animals And Working With Animals; And They Can't Explain How They Do. They Just Get A Feeling From The Animal.

I Think Using Animals For Food Is An Ethical Thing To Do, But We've Got To Do It Right. We've Got To Give Those Animals A Decent Life, And We've Got To Give Them A Painless Death. We Owe The Animal Respect.

What Parents And Teachers And Caregivers Did With Me That Actually Worked And A Lot Of That Was The Old Fashion 50s Upbringing. They Just Gave The Instruction When I Did Something Wrong - Life Was More Structured. So Basically It's [my Work] Based On Experiences With Me That Worked And It Was Teachers And Parents That Made Me Have Those Experiences.
