But If We Were To Reverse The Order Of These Priorities, What Would Happen? I Find It Hard To Imagine How A Person With Great Wealth, Bad Health, No Friends, And No Peace Of Mind Could Feel Even Slightly Happy.

If You Serve Others As Fully As You Can, What You Do Will Be A Source Of Inner Joy.

I Am Like A Wounded Animal In A Remote Isolated Place - How Wonderful! - How Happy!

To My Mind, There Are Two Things That, In Life, You Can Do About Death. Either You Can Choose To Ignore It, In Which Case You May Have Some Success In Making The Idea Of It Go Away For A Limited Period Of Time, Or You Can Confront The Prospect Of Your Own Death And Try To Analyze It And, In So Doing, Try To Minimize Some Of The Inevitable Suffering That It Causes. Neither Way Can You Actually Overcome It.

To Be In Flow Means To Be Totally Absorbed In Whatever One Is Doing At The Moment. It Occurs When One Is Fully Present And Completely Focused On The Task At Hand...flow Can Occur During Any Human Activity, Whether Work Or At Play.

Soul Is At Home In The Deep, Shaded Valleys. Heavy Torpid Flowers Saturated With Black Grow There. The Rivers Flow Like Warm Syrup. They Empty Into Huge Oceans Of Soul.

A Generous Heart And Wholesome Actions Lead To Greater Peace.

The Practice Of Patience Guards Us Against Losing Our Presence Of Mind. It Enables Us To Remain Undisturbed, Even When The Situation Is Really Difficult. It Gives Us A Certain Amount Of Inner Peace, Which Allows Us Some Self-control, So That We Can Choose To Respond To Situations In An Appropriate And Compassionate Manner, Rather Than Being Driven By Our Disturbing Emotions.

Peace Has A Great Deal To Do With Warm-heartednes S And Respect For The Lives Of Others, Avoiding Doing Them Harm And Regarding Their Lives As Being As Precious As Our Own. If, On That Basis, We Can Also Be Of Help To Others, So Much The Better.

Buddha Was Speaking About Reality. Reality May Be One, In Its Deepest Essence, But Buddha Also Stated That All Propositions About Reality Are Only Contingent. Reality Is Devoid Of Any Intrinsic Identity That Can Be Captured By Any One Single Proposition - That Is What Buddha Meant By "voidness." Therefore, Buddhism Strongly Discourages Blind Faith And Fanaticism.

A Compassionate Attitude Opens Our Inner Door, And As A Result It Is Much Easier To Communicate With Others. If There Is Too Much Self-centered Attitude, Then Fear, Doubt And Suspicion Come And As A Result Our Inner Door Closes. Then It Is Very Difficult To Communicate With Others.

If Someone Has A Gun And Is Trying To Kill You, It Would Be Reasonable To Shoot Back With Your Own Gun.

It Is The State Of Mind Of The Person Wielding The Instrument That Determines To What End It Will Be Put.

In The Present Circumstances, No One Can Afford To Assume That Someone Else Will Solve Their Problems. Every Individual Has A Responsibility To Help Guide Our Global Family In The Right Direction. Good Wishes Are Not Sufficient; We Must Become Actively Engaged.

My Call For A Spiritual Revolution Is Not A Call For A Religious Revolution. Nor Is It A Reference To A Way Of Life That Is Somehow Otherworldly, Still Less To Something Magical Or Mysterious. Rather It Is A Call For A Radical Reorientation Away From Our Habitual Preoccupation With Self. It Is A Call To Turn Toward The Wider Community Of Beings With Whom We Are Connected, And For Conduct Which Recognizes Others' Interests Alongside Our Own.

A Loving Atmosphere In Your Home Is The Foundation For Your Life.

If Scientific Analysis Were Conclusively To Demonstrate Certain Claims In Buddhism To Be False, Then We Must Accept The Findings Of Science And Abandon Those Claims.

We Can't Blame The Entire Muslim Society Because Of The Mischievous Acts Of A Few Individuals. Therefore, At The General Public Level We Must Cultivate The Notion Of Not Just One Religion, One Truth, But Pluralism And Many Truths. We Can Change The Atmosphere, And We Can Modify Certain Ways Of Thinking.

Compassion And Love Give Meaning To Our Activities And Makes Them Constructive.

As Far As Mental Development Is Concerned, We Should Never Be Complacent. We Can Develop Our Minds Infinitely - There Is No Limitation.

One Can Overcome The Forces Of Negative Emotions, Like Anger And Hatred, By Cultivating Their Counter-forces, Like Love And Compassion.

(because) The Notion Of Absolute Truth Is Difficult To Sustain Outside The Context Of Religion, Ethical Conduct Is Not Something We Engage In Because It Is Somehow Right In Itself But Because, Like Ourselves, All Others Desire To Be Happy And To Avoid Suffering. Given That This Is A Natural Disposition, Shared By All, It Follows That Each Individual Has A Right To Pursue This Goal. Accordingly, I Suggest That One Of The Things Which Determines Whether An Act Is Ethical Or Not Is Its Effect On Others' Experience Or Expectation Of Happiness.

I Have Three Commitments. Number One Commitment Is Promotion Of Human Value. Number Two Commitment Is Promotion Of Race Harmony. Number Three Commitment Is About Tibet. My Retirement Is The Third Commitment. The Previous Two Commitments, To My Death, I Have Committed.

Physical Comforts Cannot Subdue Mental Suffering, And If We Look Closely, We Can See That Those Who Have Many Possessions Are Not Necessarily Happy. In Fact, Being Wealthy Often Brings Even More Anxiety.

When Selflessness Is Seen In Objects, The Seed Of Cyclic Existence Is Destroyed.

The Lessons We Have Begun To Learn Make Me Hopeful, That Human Beings Will Become Friendlier, More Harmonious, Less Harmful. Compassion And The Seeds Of Peace Will Be Able To Flourish. Unlike An External Enemy, The Inner Enemy Cannot Regroup And Launch A Comeback Once It Has Been Destroyed From Within.

Anger Cannot Be Overcome By Anger. If Someone Is Angry With You, And You Show Anger In Return, The Result Is A Disaster. You Must Lead A Good Life. And A Good Life Does Not Mean Just Good Food, Good Clothes, Good Shelter. These Are Not Sufficient. A Good Motivation Is What Is Needed: Compassion, Without Dogmatism, Without Complicated Philosophy; Just Understanding That Others Are Human Brothers And Sisters And Respecting Their Rights And Human Dignity.

China Can Keep Her Troops On The External Frontiers Of Tibet, And Tibetans Will Pledge To Accept The Appropriate Form Of Union With China.

A Mind Committed To Compassion Is Like An Overflowing Reservoir - A Constant Source Of Energy, Determination, And Kindness.

Some Consider Me As A Living Buddha. That's Nonsense. That's Silly. That's Wrong. If They Consider Me A Simple Buddhist Monk, However, That's Probably Okay.

My Own Share Making Contribution [to The The Well-being Of Humanity]. So I Never Feel I Am Something Special.

Because The Existing Education System Is Oriented Towards Materialistic Goals We Need To Pay Special Attention To Inner Values Such As Tolerance, Forgiveness, Love And Compassion.

I'd Rather Be Kind Than Right. You Can Always Be Kind.

The Key To Human Happiness Lies Within Our Own State Of Mind, And So Too Do The Primary Obstacles To That Happiness.

Human Beings Are Of Such Nature That They Should Have Not Only Material Facilities But Spiritual Sustenance As Well. Without Spiritual Sustenance, It Is Difficult To Get And Maintain Peace Of Mind.

We Should Practice By Showing One Another Love And Helping One Another. It Is A Mistake To Pursue Happiness And To Seek To The Avoid Suffering By Deceiving And Humiliating Other People. We Must Try To Achieve Happiness And Eliminate Suffering By Being Good-hearted And Well-behaved.

Every Human Actions Becomes Dangerous When It Is Deprived Of Human Feeling. When They Are Performed With Feeling And Respect For Human Values, All Activities Become Constructive.

I Have Been Confronted With Many Difficulties Throughout The Course Of My Life, And My Country Is Going Through A Critical Period. But I Laugh Often, And My Laughter Is Contagious. When People Ask Me How I Find The Strength To Laugh Now, I Reply That I Am A Professional Laugher.

I Find That Because Of Modern Technological Evolution And Our Global Economy, And As A Result Of The Great Increase In Population, Our World Has Greatly Changed: It Has Become Much Smaller. However, Our Perceptions Have Not Evolved At The Same Pace; We Continue To Cling To Old National Demarcations And The Old Feelings Of 'us' And 'them'.

If Science Proves Some Belief Of Buddhism Wrong, Then Buddhism Will Have To Change. In My View, Science And Buddhism Share A Search For The Truth And For Understanding Reality. If You Utilize Obstacles Properly, Then They Strengthen Your Courage, And They Also Give You More Intelligence, More Wisdom.

I Believe That The Basic Nature Of Human Beings Is Gentle And Compassionate. It Is Therefore In Our Own Interest To Encourage That Nature, To Make It Live Within Us, To Leave Room For It To Develop. If On The Contrary We Use Violence, It Is As If We Voluntarily Obstruct The Positive Side Of Human Nature And Prevent Its Evolution.

We Consider That The Lives Of All Beings Are Just As Precious As Our Own, And Through This We Develop A Sense Of Concern For Others.

It Is Important To Direct Our Intelligence With Good Intentions. Without Intelligence, We Cannot Accomplish Very Much. Without Good Intentions, The Way We Exercise Of Our Intelligence May Have Destructive Results.

Despite All Philosophical Differences, All Major World Religions Have The Same Potential To Create Good Human Beings.

When We Speak Of A Calm State Of Mind Or Peace Of Mind, We Shouldn't Confuse That With An Insensitive State Of Apathy. Having A Calm Or Peaceful State Of Mind Doesn't Mean Being Spaced Out Or Completely Empty. Peace Of Mind Or A Calm State Of Mind Is Rooted In Affection And Compassion And Is Sensitive And Responsive To Others.

Although Attempting To Bring About World Peace Through The Internal Transformation Of Individuals Is Difficult, It Is The Only Way.

There Are Five Billion Human Beings And In A Certain Way I Think We Need Five Billion Different Religions.

Each Individual Has A Universal Responsibility To Shape Institutions To Serve Human Needs.

Peace Starts Within Each One Of Us. When We Have Inner Peace, We Can Be At Peace With Those Around Us. When Our Community Is In A State Of Peace, It Can Share Peace With Neighboring Communities, And So On. When We Feel Love And Kindness Towards Others, It Not Only Makes Others Feel Loved And Cared For, But It Helps Us Also To Develop Inner Happiness And Peace.

We Need To Employ A Secular Approach To Ethics, Secular In The Indian Sense Of Respecting All Religious Traditions And Even The Views Of Non-believers In An Unbiased Way. Secular Ethics Rooted In Scientific Findings, Common Experience And Common Sense Can Easily Be Introduced Into The Secular Education System. If We Can Do That There Is A Real Prospect Of Making This 21st Century An Era Of Peace And Compassion.

They Outdo Us In Every Field. But They Have No Justice. We Have Placed Our Whole Faith In Truth And In Justice. We Have Nothing Else, In Principle And In Practice.

To Me There Is No Difference Whether President, Beggar, Or King.

With The Realization Of Ones Own Potential And Self-confidence In Ones Ability, One Can Build A Better World. According To My Own Experience, Self-confidence Is Very Important. That Sort Of Confidence Is Not A Blind One; It Is An Awareness Of Ones Own Potential. On That Basis, Human Beings Can Transform Themselves By Increasing The Good Qualities And Reducing The Negative Qualities.

Happiness Cannot Come From Hatred Or Anger. Nobody Can Say, 'today I Am Happy Because This Morning I Was Angry.' On The Contrary, People Feel Uneasy And Sad And Say, 'today I Am Not Very Happy, Because I Lost My Temper This Morning.'

Just Because They're Not On Your Road Doesn't Mean They've Gotten Lost.

I Always Tell My Western Friends That It Is Best To Keep Your Own Tradition. Changing Religion Is Not Easy And Sometimes Causes Confusion. You Must Value Your Tradition And Honor Your Own Religion.

It Is Necessary To Help Others, Not Only In Our Prayers, But In Our Daily Lives. If We Find We Cannot Help Others, The Least We Can Do Is To Desist From Harming Them.

If We Lose Our Hope, That's Our Real Disaster!

Painful Experiences

According To My Own Experience, The Highest Level Of Inner Calm Comes From The Development Of Love And Compassion. The More Concerned We Are With The Happiness Of Others, The More We Increase Our Own Well-being. Friendliness And Warmth Towards Others Allow Us To Relax And Help Us To Dispel Any Sense Of Fear Or Insecurity So We Can Overcome Whatever Obstacles We Face.

I Think The Person Who Has Had More Experience Of Hardships Can Stand More Firmly In The Face Of Problems Than The Person Who Has Never Experienced Suffering. From This Angle Then, Some Suffering Can Be A Good Lesson For Life.

With A Basic Understanding Of All Humans As Brothers And Sisters, We Can Appreciate The Usefulness Of Different Systems And Ideologies That Can Accommodate Different Individuals And Groups With Different Cultural Heritages, Having Different Dispositions And Tastes. Each Person Has The Right To Choose Whatever Is Most Suitable, On The Basis Of A Deep Understanding Of All Others As Brothers And Sisters.

There Are Two Kinds Of Satisfaction Or Happiness: One Mainly Through Mental Peace; Another Physical Comfort

We Can Never Obtain Peace In The World If We Neglect The Inner World And Don't Make Peace With Ourselves. World Peace Must Develop Out Of Inner Peace. Without Inner Peace It Is Impossible To Achieve World Peace, External Peace. Weapons Themselves Do Not Act. They Have Not Come Out Of The Blue. Man Has Made Them. But Even Given Those Weapons, Those Terrible Weapons, They Cannot Act By Themselves. As Long As They Are Left Alone In Storage They Cannot Do Any Harm. A Human Being Must Use Them. Someone Must Push The Button. Satan, The Evil Powers, Cannot Push That Button. Human Beings Must Do It.

If You Help And Serve Others, You Will Ultimately Gain.

Love And Compassion Are Necessities, Not Luxuries. Without Them Humanity Cannot Survive.

Although It Is Difficult To Pinpoint The Physical Base Or Location Of Awareness, It Is Perhaps The Most Precious Thing Concealed Within Our Brains. And It Is Something That The Individual Alone Can Feel And Experience. Each Of Us Cherishes It Highly, Yet It Is Private.

To Defy The Authority Of Empirical Evidence Is To Disqualify Oneself As Someone Worthy Of Critical Engagement In A Dialogue.
