I Am Sometimes Sad When I Hear The Personal Stories Of Tibetan Refugees Who Have Been Tortured Or Beaten. Some Irritation, Some Anger Comes. But It Never Lasts Long. I Always Try To Think At A Deeper Level, To Find Ways To Console.

The Laws Of Reasoning Consist Of The Ground, The Path, And The Result. ...suffering Is In The Mind. How We Perceive Happiness Determines Our Suffering Or Not.

Through Awareness, You Get A Certain Attitude. That's The Way, You See, To Achieve More Peaceful, More Compassion, More Friendship Through That Way.

What Acts As A Far More Effective Circumstance For Generating Compassion And What, In Fact, Rouses Us From Our Comfortable Meditation Seat Is Actually Seeing Or Hearing Others - Encountering Others Directly, Not Just Conceptually In Our Imagination.

Yet, When We Face Problems With Compassion, Sincerity, And Good Motivation, Our Solutions May Take Longer, But Ultimately They Are Better.

And It Will Increase Your Enthusiasm For Engaging In The Wholesome Actions And Deeds Which Lead To Happiness And Joy.

The Colors Of Light Are Infinite Through Refraction, Yet They All Come From The Same Source. Thus I Cannot Detach Myself From The Wickedest Soul, Nor Fail To Identify With The Most Virtuous.

I Think Every Human Being, Born From Mother, And At Least The Next Few Years, You See, Received Immense Affection From Our Mother. So The Child's First Experience In This Lifetime At The Beginning, I Think That Immense Affection From Other Is In Our Blood. So Therefore, The Whole Rest Of Life, Other People Show You Smile, Genuine Sort Of Closeness Feeling. You Feel Happy. Even Animals Also Like That.

There Are Two Kinds Of Happiness - The Temporary Pleasure Derived Primarily From Material Comfort Alone And Another More Enduring Comfort That Results From The Thorough Transformation And Development Of The Mind. We Can See In Our Own Lives That The Latter Form Of Happiness Is Superior Because When Our Mental State Is Calm And Happy, We Can Easily Put Up With Minor Pains And Physical Discomforts. On The Other Hand, When Our Mind Is Restless And Upset, The Most Comfortable Physical Facilities Do Not Make Us Happy.

No Material Object, However Beautiful Or Valuable, Can Make Us Feel Loved, Because Our Deeper Identity And True Character Lie In The Subjective Nature Of The Mind.

The Future Will Be In The Hands Of Those Of You Who Belong To The 21st Century. You Have The Opportunity And Responsibility To Build A Better Humanity. This Means Developing Warm-heartednes S In This Very Life, Here And Now. So, Do Whatever Work You Do, But Ask Yourselves Now And Then, 'how Can I Contribute To Human Beings Being Happier And More Peaceful?'

Many Of The Earth's Habitats, Animals, Plants, Insects And Even Micro-organisms That We Know To Be Rare May Not Be Known At All By Future Generations. We Have The Capability And The Responsibility To Act; We Must Do So Before It Is Too Late.

A Compassionate Attitude Opens Our Inner Door, And As A Result It Is Much Easier To Communicate With Others. If There Is Too Much Self-centered Attitude, Then Fear, Doubt And Suspicion Come And As A Result Our Inner Door Closes. Then It Is Very Difficult To Communicate With Others.

It Is Important That When Pursing Our Own Self-interest We Should Be 'wise Selfish' And Not 'foolish Selfish'. Being Foolish Selfish Means Pursuing Our Own Interests In A Narrow, Shortsighted Way. Being Wise Selfish Means Taking A Broader View And Recognizing That Our Own Long-term Individual Interest Lies In The Welfare Of Everyone. Being Wise Selfish Means Being Compassionate.

On Those Days When I Can Spend A Few Hours Getting Some Understanding, I Feel Fulfilled. I Feel As If I Have Made Good Use Of My Time.

Any Issue, Including Political, Economic And Religious Activities Human Beings Pursue In This World, Should Be Fully Understood Before We Pass Our Judgement. Therefore, It Is Very Important To Know The Causes. Whatever The Issue, We Should Be Able To See The Complete Picture. This Will Enable Us To Comprehend The Whole Story.

As Far As Ignorance Is Concerned, Not Just Buddhism, Every Religion Recognizes It As The Source Of Suffering.

Chairman Mao Once Said That Political Power Comes From The Barrel Of A Gun. He Was Only Partly Right: Power That Comes From The Barrel Of A Gun Can Be Effective Only For A Short Time. In The End, Peoples Love For Truth, Justice, Freedom, And Democracy Will Triumph. No Matter What Governments Do, The Human Spirit Will Always Prevail.

Hatred, Jealousy, And Fear Hinder Peace Of Mind. When You're Angry Or Unforgiving, For Example, Your Mental Suffering Is Constant. It Is Better To Forgive Than To Spoil Your Peace Of Mind With Ill Feelings.

With The Realization Of Ones Own Potential And Self-confidence In Ones Ability, One Can Build A Better World. According To My Own Experience, Self-confidence Is Very Important. That Sort Of Confidence Is Not A Blind One; It Is An Awareness Of Ones Own Potential. On That Basis, Human Beings Can Transform Themselves By Increasing The Good Qualities And Reducing The Negative Qualities.

If There Is Love, There Is Hope That One May Have Real Families, Real Brotherhood, Real Equanimity, Real Peace. If The Love Within Your Mind Is Lost And You See Other Beings As Enemies, Then No Matter How Much Knowledge Or Education Or Material Comfort You Have, Only Suffering And Confusion Will Ensue.

The Purpose Of Our Lives Is To Be Happy. We Live In Hope, Which Means Looking Forward To Something Good. And There Are Increasing Scientific Findings That Both Our Physical And Mental Well-being Depend On Our Peace Of Mind.

When We Talk About Global Crisis, Or A Crisis Of Humanity, We Cannot Blame A Few Politicians, A Few Fanatics, Or A Few Troublemakers. The Whole Of Humanity Has A Responsibility Because It Is Our Business, Human Business. I Call This A Sense Of Universal Responsibility. That Is A Crucial Point.

Action For Happiness Encourages Each Of Us To Live More Compassionately And Put The Happiness Of Others At The Centre Of Our Lives. This Is The Path To Lasting Peace And Happiness

Initially, Terrorism Was A Certain Mixture Of Politics, Economics, And Religion. Now, It Seems That Terrorism Is More Individual And Done To Avenge Personal Grudges. So There Are Two Kinds Of Terrorism.

To Develop Patience, You Need Someone Who Willfully Hurts You. Such People Give Us Real Opportunities To Practice Tolerance. They Test Our Inner Strength In A Way That Even Our Guru Cannot. Basically, Patience Protects Us From Being Discouraged.

Hostile Attitudes Only Serve To Heat Up The Situation, Whereas A True Sense Of Respect Gradually Cools Down What Otherwise Could Become Explosive. We Must Recognize The Frequent Contradictions Between Short-term Benefit And Long-term Harm.

There Are Techniques Of Buddhism, Such As Meditation, That Anyone Can Adopt.

Genuine Peace Is Based On Inner Peace, Because You Cannot Build Peace On The Basis Of Anger

Happiness Mainly Comes From Our Own Attitude, Rather Than From External Factors.

Compassion Is Of Little Value If It Just Remains An Idea. It Must Motivate How We Respond To Others And Be Reflective In All Our Thoughts And Actions

If You Make Your Best Effort To Be Kinder, Nurture Compassion, Make The World A Better Place, Then You Can Say 'at Least I've Done My Best.

There Are Differences Between Us. But It Doesn't Make Sense To Emphasize That, Because My Future And Yours Is Connected With Everyone Else's. So We Have To Take Seriously Our Concern For All Of Humanity. When We Focus On Our Individuality, Humanity Inevitably Suffers. And Once Humanity Suffers, Each One Of Us Will Also Suffer.

Afflictive Emotions - Our Jealousy, Anger, Hatred, Fear - Can Be Put To An End. When You Realize That These Emotions Are Only Temporary, That They Always Pass On Like Clouds In The Sky, You Also Realize They Can Ultimately Be Abandoned.

Generosity Is The Most Natural Outward Expression Of An Inner Attitude Of Compassion And Loving-kindness .

Anger Or Hatred Is Like A Fisherman's Hook. It Is Very Important For Us To Ensure That We Are Not Caught By It.

People Once Considered That Religions Were Obsolete And That Material Science Would Solve All Human Problems. Then They Have Become Disillusioned With Materialism And Machinery And Have Realized That Spiritual Sciences Are Also Indispensable For Human Welfare.

If You Want To Change The World, First Try To Improve And Bring About Change Within Yourself. That Will Help Change Your Family. From There It Just Gets Bigger And Bigger. Everything We Do Has Some Effect, Some Impact.

The Practice Of Patience Guards Us Against Losing Our Presence Of Mind. It Enables Us To Remain Undisturbed, Even When The Situation Is Really Difficult. Because Of The Great Differences In Our Ways Of Thinking, It Is Inevitable That We Have Different Religions And Faiths. Each Has Its Own Beauty. And It Is Much Better That We Live Together On The Basis Of Mutual Respect And Mutual Admiration.

Fear, Hatred, And Suspicion Narrow Your Mind - Compassion Opens It.

I Believe Compassion To Be One Of The Few Things We Can Practice That Will Bring Immediate And Long-term Happiness To Our Lives. I'm Not Talking About The Short-term Gratification Of Pleasures Like Sex, Drugs Or Gambling (though I'm Not Knocking Them), But Something That Will Bring True And Lasting Happiness. People Need To Climb The Mountain Not Simple Because It Is There But Because The Soulful Divinity Needs To Be Mated With The Spirit.

When We Are Motivated By Compassion And Wisdom, The Results Of Our Actions Benefit Everyone, Not Just Our Individual Selves Or Some Immediate Convenience. When We Are Able To Recognize And Forgive Ignorant Actions Of The Past, We Gain Strength To Constructively Solve The Problems Of The Present.

I Want To Be Just A Pure Spiritual Leader.

Because My Main Concern Is The Tibetan Buddhist Culture, Not Just Political Independence, I Cannot Seek Self-rule For Central Tibet And Exclude The 4 Million Tibetans In Our Two Eastern Provinces Of Amdo And Kham.

The Proper Use Of Our Intelligence And Knowledge Is To Effect Changes From Within To Develop A Good Heart.

Basically, From The Viewpoint Of Real Human Value We Are All The Same.

The First Beneficiary Of Compassion Is Always Oneself. When Compassion, Or Warmheartedness, Arises In Us And Our Focus Shifts Away From Our Own Narrow Self-interest, It Is As If We Open An Inner Door. It Reduces Fear, Boosts Confidence And Brings Us Inner Strength. By Reducing Distrust, It Opens Us To Others And Brings Us A Sense Of Connection To Others, And Sense Of Purpose And Meaning In Life.

We Often Add To Our Pain And Suffering By Being Overly Sensitive, Over-reacting To Minor Things, And Sometimes Taking Things Too Personally.

I Would Like To Explain The Meaning Of Compassion, Which Is Often Misunderstood. Genuine Compassion Is Based Not On Our Own Projections And Expectations, But Rather On The Rights Of The Other: Irrespective Of Whether Another Person Is A Close Friend

The Real Destroyer Of Inner Peace Is Fear And Distrust. Fear Develops Frustration, Frustration Develops Anger, Anger Develops Violence.

The Practice Of Altruism Is The Authentic Way To Live As A Human Being, And It Is Not Just For Religious People. As Human Beings, Our Purpose Is To Live Meaningful Lives, To Develop A Warm Heart. There Is Meaning In Being Everyone's Friend. The Real Source Of Peace Amongst Our Families, Friends And Neighbours Is Love And Compassion.

People Think Of Animals As If They Were Vegetables, And That Is Not Right. We Have To Change The Way People Think About Animals. I Encourage The Tibetan People And All People To Move Toward A Vegetarian Diet That Doesn’t Cause Suffering.

There Is Nothing That Does Not Get Easier Through Cultivation. The Buddhas Of The Past Started Out As Ordinary Beings. They Were Not Buddhas In The Beginning. The Path To Buddhahood Is Traversed Only Through Gradually Developing More And More Courage And Determination -then It Is Attained.

Like A Lamp, Dispelling The Darkness Of Ignorance

Whenever There Is A Challenge, There Is Also An Opportunity To Face It, To Demonstrate And Develop Our Will And Determination.

Because The Existing Education System Is Oriented Towards Materialistic Goals We Need To Pay Special Attention To Inner Values Such As Tolerance, Forgiveness, Love And Compassion.

Whether We Are Rich Or Poor, Educated Or Uneducated, Whatever Our Nationality, Colour, Social Status Or Ideology May Be, The Purpose Of Our Lives Is To Be Happy

When We Think Carefully, We See That The Brief Elation We Experience When Appeasing Sensual Impulses May Not Be Very Different From What The Drug Addict Feels When Indulging His Or Her Habit. Temporary Relief Is Soon Followed By A Craving For More. And In Just The Same Way That Taking Drugs In The End Only Causes Trouble, So, Too, Does Much Of What We Undertake To Fulfill Our Immediate Sensory Desires.

The Ultimate Source Of A Happy Life Is Warm-heartedness. This Means Extending To Others The Kind Of Concern We Have For Ourselves. On A Simple Level We Find That If We Have A Compassionate Heart We Naturally Have More Friends. And Scientists Today Are Discovering That While Anger And Hatred Eat Into Our Immune System, Warm-heartedness And Compassion Are Good For Our Health.

Have No Discrepancy Between What You Say, What You Are And What You Do.
