I Think That It Was Really Rock-and-roll Stars, Women Who Were Breaking Boundaries With Their Bodies And Their Voices And Their Beings And Their Music. I Spent A Lot Of Time At Concerts,just Watching Women Rock Out. They Expressed So Much Of What I Believed Could Be Possible.

My Relationship To The Desecration Of The Earth Was Very Theoretical And Intellectual Until I Got Sick. I Could Never Watch Anything About Polar Bears Dying Or The Death Of Bees. There Were Certain Things I Knew I Couldn't Go Near Because They Were Too Devastating. But I Don't Think Until I Got Cancer Did I Get It In My Body, What Was Happening To The Earth. I Finally Went: "oh! Earth! Organism!"

But My Body Was Telling Its Story. I Have Read A Lot Of Stuff About Cancer. I Needed This Book. I Wish I'd Had This Book When I Had Cancer. I Wanted Someone To Be Talking To Me About "fart Floors." I Wanted Somebody Telling Me What It Was Like To Have A Colostomy Bag. I Felt So Alone. And If You're A Person Who's Been Traumatized By Past Abuse, It's So Potentially Re-traumatizing. You Slip Right Into "oh My God, This Is The Only Person This Has Happened To Before" Mentality: "i'm Especially Bad And I Have Especially Bad Cancer..."

People Didn't Feel So Much Shame Around It And That They Didn't Feel So Much Humiliation Around It. And The Other Thing That People Have Given Me A Lot Of Feedback About - Something I'm Very Excited About - Is All The Stuff Around Chemo As An "empathetic Warrior."

To Have Insurance And Have A Diagnosis And To Have Doctors, I Just Felt It Would Be Immoral On Some Level To Complain.

It Really Occurred To Me At A Certain Point: Women Have Not Been Embodied. Feminism Has Not Been Embodied. It Hasn't Gotten Into Us In A Way Where It Is So Undeniable That There Is Nothing To Prove. Do You Know What I Mean? That We Are So In Our Feminist Skin, So To Speak, That We Are That World Now.

For Many Years Now, I Feel Like My Own Body Struggle Has Been Linked And Connected With Women I Meet In The World. I Think We're In This Together.

I Think It Was A Realization Of This Cancer, An Understanding Of The Broader Implications Of What Cancer Is. The Greed, The Ravaging Of Lands And Seas For Profit, The Taking Of Things That Don't Belong To Us; What We've Done To The Environment In This Fast-paced, Careless Hunger. I Think All Of That Was Happening In My Body.

I Really Believe That Is Helping People. I've Been Talking To Oncologists About How We Can Re-frame And Re-think The Chemo Process, So It Becomes A Much More Spiritual, Psychological Journey. Where People Really Could Burn Away What Needs To Be Burned Away. It's Happening Anyway. Why Not Frame It In A Psychological Way Where It Can Serve As A Transformation?

We Can't Walk Where We Want To Walk Or Be Who We Want To Be Or Dress The Way We Want To Dress Or Go Anywhere Any Time Of Day. I Am Talking About The Freedom That Comes With Just Knowing That You're Okay, And That You Have Value And You Have Identity, And You Don't Have To Keep Proving Yourself.

Well, The Tyranny Of Masculinity And The Tyranny Of Patriarchy I Think Has Been Much More Deadly To Men Than It Has To Women. It Hasn’t Killed Our Hearts. It’s Killed Men’s Hearts. It’s Silenced Them, It’s Cut Them Off.

The Cancer In Me Became An Awareness Of The Cancer That Is Everywhere. The Cancer Of Cruelty, The Cancer Of Carelessness, The Cancer Of Greed.

Women Not Only Get Violated, But Then We Take On The Struggle To End It Too... As A Man, How Could The Destruction Of Women Be Anything To You But Devastating? Think About The Fact That The Women Being Hurt Are Your Mothers, Daughters, Sisters.

Anorexia Was My Attempt To Have Control Over My Body And Manipulate My Body And Starve My Body And Shape My Body. It Was Not A Very Good Relationship. It Was The Sort Of Relationship My Father Had To My Body. It Was A Tyrannical, "you'll Do What I Tell You" Relationship.

We Have To Get Ourselves Out Of This Syndrome Of Trauma And Being Re-traumatised. Art Releases This Energy. It Exposes Us To Wonder Again, And Magic Again, And Ambiguity - All The Things We Need To Really Keep Going And Fighting And Resisting In These Times.

I Think What All Of Us Have In Common Is That We've Been Taught And Trained And Programmed To Focus On Fixing And Mutilating Ourselves. That's A Core Reason Why Women Do Not Have Power In The World.

I Feel Very Passionate That We Need Cat Scanners In Every Country In The World. There's Not A Cat Scanner In All Of Eastern Congo. People Don't Use The Word "cancer" Because They Don't Get Diagnosed. They Just Die.

Three Of The Ten Principles Governing The City Of Joy Are (a) Tell The Truth, (b) Stop Waiting To Be Rescued, And (c) Give Away What You Want The Most.

What I Would Argue Is That Real Spirituality Is The Ability To Keep Encountering Two Opposite Thoughts At The Same Time And Still Maintain Some Kind Of Morality And Perspective In The World. Once You Are Diagnosed With Cancer, Time Changes. It Both Speeds Up Insanely And Stops Altogether.

I Think That Anytime You Get Clear About What Your Mission Is Or What Your Focus Wants To Be, Things Start To Come Together In Your Life.

I Think We Are Seeing The Absolute And Utter Collapse Of Male Politicians In This [u.s] Country And We're Seeing What The Underpinnings Of The Power Structure Are, Which Are Sexist Underpinnings.

People Need To Dance. I'd Say Dance At Least Twice A Day. That's How To Get Your Energy Up And How You Keep You Revolutionary Spirit Going. It's Emma Goldman Who Said, "any Revolution Where I Can't Dance Is Not My Revolution." I Think That's The Revolution We Want.

You Know I Think So Many Of Us Live Outside Our Bodies. My Dream Is That People Will Find A Way Back Home, Into Their Bodies, To Connect With The Earth, To Connect With Each Other, To Connect With The Poor, To Connect With The Broken, To Connect With The Needy, To Connect With People Calling Out All Around Us, To Connect With The Beauty, Poetry, The Wildness.

The World Has Done That Already - Possessed The Congo And Pillaged Her And Dominated Her And Robbed Her Of Agency And Occupation. Love Is Something Else, Something Rising And Contagious And Surprising. It Isn't Aware Of Itself. It Isn't Keeping Track. It Isn't Something You Sign For. It's Endless And Generous And Enveloping. It's In The Drums, In The Voices, In The Bodies Of The Wounded Made Suddenly Whole, By The Music, By Each Other, Dancing.

I Think To Be Cut Off From Your Heart Is The Greatest Tyranny In The World.

One Of The Things I Think About When We Talk About A Violence,and Relationship To Spirituality Is That It Seems To Me When You Take Something From Someone That Isn't Yours Or You Hurt Someone Else, Fundamentally, You Actually Do That To Yourself. You Actually Unmake Yourself, You Work Against Your Own Being And Your Own Matter.

When You Rape, Beat, Maim, Mutilate, Burn, Bury, And Terrorize Women, You Destroy The Essential Life Energy On The Planet.

Each Time I Had Five Hours Of The Poison Going Into Me, I Just Pictured Everything That Needed To Be Burned Away. I Pictured Wars, I Pictured The Things My Father Had Done To Me, I Pictured Brutality, And When It Was Over, I Am Light.

My Commitment Originated In My Own Story And My Own Relationship To Violence.

I Got To A Nine-hour Surgery, I Lost Lots Of Body Parts And Rearranged, I Got Really Months Of Infection That I Lost 30 Pounds. But The Idea Of Pumping Poison Into My Bloodstream Just - I Couldn't, I Couldn't.

We Get Off Track. Capitalism Takes Us Off Track. You Get Off The "real" And Get On The "wheel." The "wheel" Becomes The Winning And Losing, The Succeeding And Failing, The "i Will Achieve." All That Stuff Becomes So Preoccupying, Particularly If You're Born With Low Self-esteem, Or No Sense Of Yourself, Or Even If You're Just Born In The Consumer Culture. It's Very Powerful.

I Live With That Contradiction Daily. It Is A Constant Struggle. I Struggle Very Deeply. I Don't Think I've Said This To Anyone, But I've Wondered If I Just Want To Give Up This World And Live In The Congo And Just Be There. But I Don't Think That's What They Need From Me.

If You Look At Capitalism And Patriarchy, They're Both Such Hierarchical, Competitive, Oneupmanship Systems. Dancing Insists We Take Up Space, And Though It Has No Set Direction, We Go There Together. Dance Is Dangerous, Joyous, Sexual, Holy, Disruptive, And Contagious And It Breaks The Rules. It Can Happen Anywhere, At Anytime, With Anyone And Everyone, And It's Free. Dance Joins Us And Pushes Us To Go Further And That Is Why It's At The Center Of One Billion Rising.

Good Is Towing The Line, Being Behaved, Being Quiet, Being Passive, Fitting In, Being Liked, And Great Is Being Messy, Having A Belly, Speaking Your Mind, Standing Up For What You Believe In, Fighting For Another Paradigm, Not Letting People Talk You Out Of What You Know To Be True.

Wouldn't It Be Incredible If Everyone Could Be Purged, Somehow, Of The Projected Not-them Badness That They Internalized And Perhaps Have Acted Out Because Their Souls Have Been So Damaged? What Happens When Someone Throws You Against A Wall Or Tells You You're A Jackass Or Puts You Down Or Calls You Bad Names? It Goes Into Your Body. We Hold It In Our Body. If We Don't Have A Way To Let That Go And Release That, It Becomes Sickness Eventually.

There Is Just So Much Excess In Terms Of The Market For Self-remodeling. I Think Most Women Are Perfectly Gorgeous And Beautiful The Way They Are.

What I'm Really Interested In Is Freedom.

Dancing In Public Spaces And Moving Your Body Freely In A Public Space Is Reclaiming What Was Taken From You When You Were Violated. The Energy Of That - You Can't Capture It, You Can't Own It. Capitalists Can't Buy It.it Can't Be Sold. It Can't Be Monetized. And That's Why I Think It's So Powerful.

Maybe Being Good Isn't About Getting Rid Of Anything. Maybe Being Good Has To Do With Living In The Mess In The Frailty In The Failures In The Flaws. Maybe What I Tried To Get Rid Of Is The Goodest Part Of Me. Think Passion. Think Age. Think Round. Maybe Good Is About Developing The Capacity To Live Fully Inside Everything. Our Body Is Our Country, The Only City, The Only Village, The Only Every We Will Ever Know.

Women Are The Primary Resource Of The Planet. They Give Birth, We Come From Them. They Are Mothers, They Are Visionaries, They Are The Future. If We Can Figure Out How To Make Women Feel Safe And Honor Women, It Would Be Parallel Or Equal To Honoring Life Itself.

I Think We Have To Get Bolder. Why After Fukushima Didn't We All Go Out And Shut Down All The Nuclear Power Plants And Stay There Until It Happened?
