I Don't Just Mean The Obvious Differences, Like How An English Woodland Is Different From A Central American Rain Forest, Or Comparing Tracts Of West Coast Redwoods To The Saguaro Forests Of The American Southwest... They Each Have Their Own Gossip, Their Own Sound, Their Own Rustling Whispers And Smells. A Voice Speaks Up When You Enter Their Acres That Can't Be Mistaken For One You'd Hear Anyplace Else, A Voice True To Those Particular Tress, Individual Rather Than Of Their Species.

As Far As I'm Concerned, The Only Difference Between Fact And What Most People Call Fiction Is About Fifteen Pages In The Dictionary.

It Reminded Me Of That Tongue-in-cheek Quick History Of Art I'd Overheard...used To Be People Couldn't Draw Very Well, Then They Could, And Now They Can't Again.

There Was Too Much Going On Here -- Too Much That Strayed From Odd All The Way Over Into Seriously Weird.

A Long Time Ago A Bunch Of People Reached A General Consensus As To What's Real And What's Not And Most Of Us Have Been Going Along With It Ever Since.

My Characters Seem Real Because They Are Drawn From The Realities Of My Life. I Didn't Have To Research Their Pain; I Just Tapped Into My Own.

The Thing To Remember When You're Writing Is, It's Not Whether Or Not What You Put On Paper Is True. It's Whether It Wakes A Truth In Your Reader.

The Old Gods And Their Magics Did Not Dwindle Away Into Murky Memories Of Brownies And Little Fairies More At Home In A Disney Cartoon; Rather, They Changed. The Coming Of Christ And Christians Actually Freed Them. They Were No Longer Bound To People's Expectations But Could Now Become Anything That They Could Imagine Themselves To Be. They Are Still Here, Walking Among Us. We Just Don't Recognize Them Anymore.

Labels Don't Mean Much To Me One Way Or Another -- Except When They Close The Minds Of Potential Readers. I'd Much Rather We Do Away With Genres And Simply File Everything Under Fiction. I Know It Can Work -- One Of My Favourite Record Stores (waterloo Music In Austin) Simply Files Everything Alphabetically And No One Seems To Have Much Problem Finding What They're Looking For.

I Believe A Good Writer Can Write A Good Book With Any Sort Of Character, In Any Sort Of Setting, But I Prefer To Write About The Outsider. It Might Just Be Because I've Been One (or Perceived Myself To Be One) For So Much Of My Life. But The Simple Fact Of Being Marginalized Immediately Brings Conflict To A Story Before The Narrative Even Begins, And That's Gold For A Writer Because It Means That Your Character Already Has Depth Before Events Begin To Unfold.

It May Sound Trite, But Using The Weapons Of The Enemy, No Matter How Good One's Intentions, Makes One The Enemy.

Remember The Quiet Wonders. The World Has More Need Of Them Than It Has For Warriors.

One Expected Growth, Change; Without It, The World Was Less, The Well Of Inspiration Dried Up, The Muses Fled.

An Now The Silences Come In A Single Lifetime, In A Single Year... When Species Die, Leaving A Silent Space In The World Song That Can Never Be Filled.

People Want To Know Those Details. They Think It Gives Them Greater Insight Into A Piece Of Art, But When They Approach A Painting In Such A Manner, They Are Belittling Both The Artist’s Work And Their Own Ability To Experience It. Each Painting I Do Says Everything I Want To Say On Its Subject And In Terms Of That Painting, And Not All The Trivia In The World Concerning My Private Life Will Give The Viewer More Insight Into It Than What Hangs There Before Their Eyes. Frankly, As Far As I’m Concerned, Even Titling A Work Is An Unnecessary Concession.

How Hard Would It Be To Ask Children What They See In Their Heads? How Big Should The House Be In Comparison To The Family Standing In Front Of It? What Is It About The Anatomy Of The People That Doesn't Look Right? Then Let Them Try It Again. Teach Them To Learn How To See And Ask Questions.

What Do They Say About Meeting A Bear In The Woods? Oh Right, You Shouldn't. And To Make Sure You Don't, You Should Make A Lot Of Noise So That They'll Will Know Where You Are And Keep Their Distance Because, Supposedly, They're As Nervous Of Us As We Are Of Them. Which Is All Goo, Except This Bear Doesn't Seem The Least Bit Nervous. He's Giving Me A Look Like I'm Goldilocks, Ate His Porridge, Broke His Chair, Slept In His Bed, And Now It's Payback Time."- Widdershins

I Do Believe In An Everyday Sort Of Magic -- The Inexplicable Connectedness We Sometimes Experience With Places, People, Works Of Art And The Like; The Eerie Appropriateness Of Moments Of Synchronicity; The Whispered Voice, The Hidden Presence, When We Think We're Alone.

I Write On A Computer, But I've Run The Complete Gambit. When I Was Very Young, I Wrote With A Ballpoint Pen In School Notebooks. Then I Got Pretentious And Started Writing With A Dip Pen On Parchment (i Wrote At Least A Novel-length Poem That Way). Moved On To A Fountain Pen. Then A Typewriter, Then An Electric Self-correct. Then Someone Gave Me A Word Processor And I Was Amazed At Being Able To Fit Ten Pages On One Of Those Floppy Discs.

The Trouble With Advice Is That It's Usually Something You Don't Want To Hear.

Inside Us Lies Every Possibility That Is Available To A Sentient Being. Every Darkness, Every Light. It Is The Choices We Make That Decide Who Or What We Will Be.

Wondering’s Healthy. Broadens The Mind. Opens You Up To All Sorts Of Stray Thoughts And Possibilities.

The Problem With Children Is That You Have To Put Up With Their Parents.

What I Want To Do Is Travel Deep And Deeper Into The Dreamlands, To Find That Place That I Know Is Waiting For Me Here. My Home.

The Thing I Like So Much About Short Stories Is That There Isn't As Much Of An Investment Of Time So I'm Free To Experiment More. If It Doesn't Work Out, I've Only Lost A Week Or Two Of Work. If I Screw Up A Novel I've Lost At Least A Year's Worth Of Work. But The Nice Thing Is That Those Experiments With Short Stories Can Be Carried Over To Novels When The Experiments Do Work.

Not Everything Has To Mean Something. Some Things Just Are.

But That's What We All Are-just Stories. We Only Exist By How People Remember Us, By The Stories We Make Of Our Lives. Without The Stories, We'd Just Fade Away.

Growing Up, I'd Already Decided I Wanted To Be A Beatnik. A Bohemian Poet, I Thought. Or A Musician. Maybe An Artist. I'd Dress In Black Turtlenecks And Smoke Gitanes. I'd Listen To Cool Jazz In Clubs, Getting Up To Read Devastating Truths From My Notebook, Leaning Against The Microphone, Cigarette Dangling From My Hand.

I Don't Think The World Works On Merit.

I Wouldn't Like To Live In A World Where Everything's As Cut-and-dried As Most People Think It Is

All My Life I've Wanted To Be The Kid Who Gets To Cross Over Into The Magical Kingdom.

We're All Made Of Stories. When They Finally Put Us Underground, The Stories Are What Will Go On. Not Forever, Perhaps, But For A Time. It's A Kind Of Immortality, I Suppose, Bounded By Limits, It's True, But Then So's Everything.

Like Legend And Myth, Magic Fades When It Is Unused - Hence All The Old Tales Of Elfin Kingdoms Moving Further And Further Away From Our World, Or That Magical Beings Require Our Faith, Our Belief In Their Existence, To Survive. That Is A Lie. All They Require Is Our Recognition.

Every Time You Do A Good Turn, You Shine The Light A Little Further Into The Dark. And The Thing Is, Even When We're Gone, That Light's Going To Keep Shining On, Pushing The Shadows Back.

Often The Magical Elements In My Books Are Standing In For Elements Of The Real World, The Small And Magical-in-their-own-right Sorts Of Things That We Take For Granted And No Longer Pay Attention To, Like The Bonds Of Friendship That Entwine Our Own Lives With Those Of Other People And Places.

Living On The Street As A Kid Changed The Way I Looked At Everything. It Was A Different Time And While It Had Its Dangers, It Was Nothing Like It Would Be Today. It Was The Summer Of Love And There Was A Real Sense Of Community Among Us. We Were Hippies Who Looked Out For Each Other Instead Of Trying To Rip Each Other Off. We Only Had To Watch Out For The Police Who Liked To Roust Us Just On General Principles, And The Kids Who Came In From The Suburbs To Do A Little Hippie-bashing.

Most Times We Only See Things For The Way We Are. But We're Good At Lying To Ourselves. Sometimes We Need Somebody Who's Not Living In Our Skin To Point Out How Things Really Are.

Even, She Thought, Even Without The Gift Of Witchsight, There Was More Beauty To Be Found In The World Than Could Ever Be Snared In Language Or Music. And With The Sight.

You Know How We'd Get Along Better? If Everybody'd Just Remember How We're All Related. White, Black, Asian, Skin. No Difference. All The Bloodlines Go Back To That One Old Mama In Africa.

The Stronger A Woman Gets, The More Insecure The Men In Her Life Feel. It Doesn’t Work That Way For A Woman. We Celebrate Strength--in Our Partners As Well As In Ourselves.

It Is So Easy For Your People To Forget That Everything Has A Spirit, That All Are Equal. That Magic And Mystery Are A Part Of Your Lives, Not Something To Store Away In A Child's Bedroom, Or To Use As An Escape From Your Lives.

It's All A Matter Of Paying Attention, Being Awake In The Present Moment, And Not Expecting A Huge Payoff. The Magic In This World Seems To Work In Whispers And Small Kindnesses.

Well, While I Didn't Have The More Extreme Experiences Of Some Of My Characters, I Didn't Exactly Come From The Most Normal Of Households. Or Rather, It Was Normal, In That Dysfunctional Families Appear To Be The Norm.

Most Children Are Given Far Too Much Praise For Their Early Drawings, So Much So That They Rarely Learn The Ability To Refine Their First Crude Efforts The Way Their Early Attempts At Language Are Corrected.

You've Got To Spread Out As Far As You Can, Cut Down A Whole Forest, Irrigate A Whole Desert, Just To Make Sure That You Won't Accidentally Stumble Upon A Place That's Still In Its Natural State.

Let Me Give You Some Advice: Try To Approach Things Without Preconceived Ideas, Without Supposing You Already Know Everything There Is To Know About Them. Get That Trick Down And You'll Be Surprised At What's Really All Around You.

It Seems Like I Always Wrote, I Just Didn't Think Of It As A Career Choice. I Just Liked To Tell Stories ... To Myself, To Pen Pals (i Had A Lot Of Them, All Over The World). Like Legend And Myth, Magic Fades When It Is Unused.

I Think A Good Writer Is A Mix Of Confidence (sure That What They're Writing Is Going To Appeal To Their Readers) And Uncertainty (what If All These Words Are Crap?). If You're Too Confident, You Get An Attitude That Seeps Through Into Your Writing, Affecting The Characters And The Story. If You're Too Uncertain, You'll Never Finish Anything.

Every Time We Fix Something That Broken, Whether It's A Car Engine Or A Broken Heart, That An Act Of Magic. And What Makes It Magic Is That We Choose To Create Or Help, Just As We Can Choose To Harm.

The Only Real Reason For Self-referencing Is The Fun Factor. It's Fun For The Writer, Getting Little Peeks At What Old Characters Might Be Up To. And It's Fun For Readers To Spot A Familiar Face, Or Pick Up On A Made-up Book Title Or Something From An Earlier Story. I Don't Know That It Does -- Or Even Should -- Contribute To The Story In Hand Being Any Better Than It Would Have Been Without It.

What We Take From The Spirit World Is Only A Reflection Of What Lies Inside Ourselves.

The Magic In This World Seems To Work In Whispers And Small Kindnesses.

I'd Say That Any Character Or Setting Can Be Given A Bit Of An Otherworldly Sheen And Be The Better For It. The One Thing I Insist On With My Own Writing Is That I Won't Let Magic Solve My Characters' Real World Problems. The Solutions Have To Come From The Characters Themselves.
