I Write On A Computer, But I've Run The Complete Gambit. When I Was Very Young, I Wrote With A Ballpoint Pen In School Notebooks. Then I Got Pretentious And Started Writing With A Dip Pen On Parchment (i Wrote At Least A Novel-length Poem That Way). Moved On To A Fountain Pen. Then A Typewriter, Then An Electric Self-correct. Then Someone Gave Me A Word Processor And I Was Amazed At Being Able To Fit Ten Pages On One Of Those Floppy Discs.

When One Of My Characters Becomes Aware Of A Magical Element, It Might Be Because The World Is Wider Than We Assume It To Be, But It Might Also Be A Reminder To Pay Attention To What Is Here Already, Hidden Only Because It's Been Forgotten.

What I Want To Do Is Travel Deep And Deeper Into The Dreamlands, To Find That Place That I Know Is Waiting For Me Here. My Home.

In The Dark Attics Of Our Minds, All Times Mingle.

But That's What We All Are-just Stories. We Only Exist By How People Remember Us, By The Stories We Make Of Our Lives. Without The Stories, We'd Just Fade Away.

There Was Too Much Going On Here -- Too Much That Strayed From Odd All The Way Over Into Seriously Weird.

It's All A Matter Of Paying Attention, Being Awake In The Present Moment, And Not Expecting A Huge Payoff. The Magic In This World Seems To Work In Whispers And Small Kindnesses.

Books And Music Saved Me As A Teenager Because It Was Through Them That I Realized That I Wasn't Alone In My Obsessive Love For Words And Music.

You Don't Have To Be Michelangelo To Teach Basic Art, Just As You Don't Have To Be Shakespeare To Be Able To Teach The Correct Use Of Language.

The Only Real Reason For Self-referencing Is The Fun Factor. It's Fun For The Writer, Getting Little Peeks At What Old Characters Might Be Up To. And It's Fun For Readers To Spot A Familiar Face, Or Pick Up On A Made-up Book Title Or Something From An Earlier Story. I Don't Know That It Does -- Or Even Should -- Contribute To The Story In Hand Being Any Better Than It Would Have Been Without It.

A Long Time Ago A Bunch Of People Reached A General Consensus As To What's Real And What's Not And Most Of Us Have Been Going Along With It Ever Since.

Well, While I Didn't Have The More Extreme Experiences Of Some Of My Characters, I Didn't Exactly Come From The Most Normal Of Households. Or Rather, It Was Normal, In That Dysfunctional Families Appear To Be The Norm.

There Are Few Joys To Compare With The Telling Of A Well-told Tale.

The Family We Choose For Ourselves Is More Important Than The One We Were Born Into; That People Have To Earn Our Respect And Trust, Not Have It Handed To Them Simply Because Of Genetics.

Magic Lies In Between Things, Between The Day And The Night, Between Yellow And Blue, Between Any Two Things.

There Isn't A Single Day I Don't Do Some Writing -- If You Don't, You Won't Have A Book. When You're Self-employed It Is Very Easy To Burn Away Your Time Instead -- Answering E-mails, Surfing The Internet, Or Hanging Out With Friends. You Really Must Have The Discipline To Sit Down And Write Every Day. Most Of What I Am Writing Is Living In The Back Of My Head Or In My Subconscious. I Find If I Write Every Day, My Subconscious Will Do The Job For Me.

People Want To Know Those Details. They Think It Gives Them Greater Insight Into A Piece Of Art, But When They Approach A Painting In Such A Manner, They Are Belittling Both The Artist’s Work And Their Own Ability To Experience It. Each Painting I Do Says Everything I Want To Say On Its Subject And In Terms Of That Painting, And Not All The Trivia In The World Concerning My Private Life Will Give The Viewer More Insight Into It Than What Hangs There Before Their Eyes. Frankly, As Far As I’m Concerned, Even Titling A Work Is An Unnecessary Concession.

Everything Is The Way It Is Because We've All Agreed That's The Way It Is.

The Thing I Like So Much About Short Stories Is That There Isn't As Much Of An Investment Of Time So I'm Free To Experiment More. If It Doesn't Work Out, I've Only Lost A Week Or Two Of Work. If I Screw Up A Novel I've Lost At Least A Year's Worth Of Work. But The Nice Thing Is That Those Experiments With Short Stories Can Be Carried Over To Novels When The Experiments Do Work.

The Stronger A Woman Gets, The More Insecure The Men In Her Life Feel. It Doesn’t Work That Way For A Woman. We Celebrate Strength--in Our Partners As Well As In Ourselves.

All Forests Have Their Own Personality. I Don't Just Mean The Obvious Differences, Like How An English Woodland Is Different From A Central American Rain Forest, Or Comparing Tracts Of West Coast Redwoods To The Saguaro Forests Of The American Southwest... They Each Have Their Own Gossip, Their Own Sound, Their Own Rustling Whispers And Smells. A Voice Speaks Up When You Enter Their Acres That Can't Be Mistaken For One You'd Hear Anyplace Else, A Voice True To Those Particular Tress, Individual Rather Than Of Their Species.

Fairy Tales And Mythology Have Always Been An Exaggerated Distillation Of The Real World. Think Of Them As Blueprints For How To Deal With A Multitude Of Situations That Can Arise In A Person's Life. The Beauty Of Them Is That Their Analogies Resonate So Deeply And They Also Entertain While They Teach.

There Are No Happy Endings... There Are No Endings, Happy Or Otherwise. We All Have Our Own Stories Which Are Just Part Of The One Story That Binds Both This World And Faerie. Sometimes We Step Into Each Others Stories - Perhaps Just For A Few Minutes, Perhaps For Years - And Then We Step Out Of Them Again. But All The While, The Story Just Goes On.

A Name Can't Begin To Encompass The Sum Of All Her Parts. But That's The Magic Of Names, Isn't It? That The Complex, Contradictory Individuals We Are Can Be Called Up Complete And Whole In Another Mind Through The Simple Sorcery Of A Name.

I'd Say That Any Character Or Setting Can Be Given A Bit Of An Otherworldly Sheen And Be The Better For It. The One Thing I Insist On With My Own Writing Is That I Won't Let Magic Solve My Characters' Real World Problems. The Solutions Have To Come From The Characters Themselves.

Wisdom Never Comes To Those Who Believe They Have Nothing Left To Learn.

Inside Us Lies Every Possibility That Is Available To A Sentient Being. Every Darkness, Every Light. It Is The Choices We Make That Decide Who Or What We Will Be.

I Know It Can Work -- One Of My Favourite Record Stores (waterloo Music In Austin) Simply Files Everything Alphabetically And No One Seems To Have Much Problem Finding What They're Looking For.

As The New Work Fills My Notebooks, I've Come To Realize That The Characters In My Stories Were So Real Because I Really Did Want To Get Close To People, I Really Did Want To Know Them. It Was Just Easier To Do It On Paper, One Step Removed.

Beauty Isn't What You See On Tv Or In Magazine Ads Or Even Necessarily In Art Galleries. It's A Lot Deeper And A Lot Simpler Than That. It's Realizing The Goodness Of Things, It's Leaving The World A Little Better Than It Was Before You Got Here. It's Appreciating The Inspiration Of The World Around You And Trying To Inspire Others.

I'm Pretty Much Fixated On Certain Themes. Family, But It's Family Of Choice As Much As Family Of Blood. Individuality, Yes, But Not At The Cost Of Others' Happiness. Be True To Your Friends. Remembering To Find Some Wonder And Hope In The World. Basically It Boils Down To: Treat People Like You'd Like Them To Treat You, Leave The World A Little Better Than It Was When You Got Here, Respect Others And Stand Up For Those Who Can't Stand Up For Themselves.

Living On The Street As A Kid Changed The Way I Looked At Everything. It Was A Different Time And While It Had Its Dangers, It Was Nothing Like It Would Be Today. It Was The Summer Of Love And There Was A Real Sense Of Community Among Us. We Were Hippies Who Looked Out For Each Other Instead Of Trying To Rip Each Other Off. We Only Had To Watch Out For The Police Who Liked To Roust Us Just On General Principles, And The Kids Who Came In From The Suburbs To Do A Little Hippie-bashing.

The Thing To Remember When You're Writing Is, It's Not Whether Or Not What You Put On Paper Is True. It's Whether It Wakes A Truth In Your Reader.

Look Inside Yourself For The Answers - You're The Only One Who Knows What's Best For You. Everybody Else Is Only Guessing.

My Theory About Writing Is That One Should Write Books You'd Like To Read, But No One Else Has Written Yet. I Think If Modern Technology Had Been Around When I Was A Kid, I Would Never Have Left My Bedroom Except To Take The Dogs Out For Their Run Three Times A Day.

I Think A Good Writer Is A Mix Of Confidence (sure That What They're Writing Is Going To Appeal To Their Readers) And Uncertainty (what If All These Words Are Crap?). If You're Too Confident, You Get An Attitude That Seeps Through Into Your Writing, Affecting The Characters And The Story. If You're Too Uncertain, You'll Never Finish Anything.

It's Not Something You Can Prove....i Know You Hate To Hear This, But You Either Have It, Or You Don't.

There's Bad Apples In Whatever Way You Want To Group People - Doesn't Matter If It's Religious, Political Or Social. The Big Mistake Is Generalizing.
