Wherever There Is Great Property There Is Great Inequality. For One Very Rich Man There Must Be At Least Five Hundred Poor, And The Affluence Of The Few Supposes The Indigence Of The Many. The Affluence Of The Rich Excites The Indignation Of The Poor, Who Are Often Both Driven By Want, And Prompted By Envy, To Invade His Possessions.

What Is Prudence In The Conduct Of Every Private Family Can Scarce Be Folly In That Of A Great Kingdom.

People Of The Same Trade Seldom Meet Together, Even For Merriment And Diversion, But The Conversation Ends In A Conspiracy Against The Public, Or In Some Contrivance To Raise Prices.

Such Regulations May, No Doubt, Be Considered As In Some Respect A Violation Of Natural Liberty. But Those Exertions Of The Natural Liberty Of A Few Individuals, Which Might Endanger The Security Of The Whole Society, Are, And Ought To Be, Restrained By The Laws Of All Governments; Of The Most Free, As Well As Or The Most Despotical. The Obligation Of Building Party Walls, In Order To Prevent The Communication Of Fire, Is A Violation Of Natural Liberty, Exactly Of The Same Kind With The Regulations Of The Banking Trade Which Are Here Proposed.

A Power To Dispose Of Estates For Ever Is Manifestly Absurd. The Earth And The Fulness Of It Belongs To Every Generation, And The Preceding One Can Have No Right To Bind It Up From Posterity. Such Extension Of Property Is Quite Unnatural.

Civil Government, So Far As It Is Instituted For The Security Of Property, Is In Reality Instituted For The Defense Of The Rich Against The Poor, Or Of Those Who Have Some Property Against Those Who Have None At All.

There Is No Art Which Government Sooner Learns Of Another Than That Of Draining Money From The Pockets Of The People.

The Propensity To Truck, Barter And Exchange One Thing For Another Is Common To All Men, And To Be Found In No Other Race Of Animals.

The Problem With Fiat Money Is That It Rewards The Minority That Can Handle Money, But Fools The Generation That Has Worked And Saved Money.

It Is Not, Accordingly, In The Richest Countries, But In The Most Thriving, Or In Those Which Are Growing Rich The Fastest, That The Wages Of Labour Are Highest. England Is Certainly, In The Present Times, A Much Richer Country Than Any Part Of North America. The Wages Of Labour, However, Are Much Higher In North America Than In Any Part Of England.

Though The Principles Of The Banking Trade May Appear Somewhat Abstruse, The Practice Is Capable Of Being Reduced To Strict Rules. To Depart Upon Any Occasion From Those Rules, Is Consequence Of Some Flattering Speculation Of Extraordinary Gain, Is Almost Always Extremely Dangerous, And Frequently Fatal To The Banking Company Which Attempts It.

We Rarely Hear, It Has Been Said, Of The Combinations [that Is, Unions Or Colluding Organizations] Of Masters, Though Frequently Of Those Of Workmen. But Whoever Imagines, Upon This Account, That Masters Rarely Combine, Is As Ignorant Of The World As Of The Subject. Masters Are Always And Everywhere In A Sort Of Tacit, But Constant And Uniform Combination, Not To Raise The Wages Of Labor Above Their Actual Price.

It Must Always Be Remembered, However, That It Is The Luxuries, And Not The Necessary Expense Of The Inferior Ranks Of People, That Ought Ever To Be Taxed.

To Feel Much For Others And Little For Ourselves, That To Restrain Our Selfish, And To Indulge Our Benevolent Affections, Constitutes The Perfection Of Human Nature.

It Is The Highest Impertinence And Presumption, Therefore, In Kings And Ministers To Pretend To Watch Over The Economy Of Private People, And To Restrain Their Expense. They Are Themselves, Always, And Without Any Exception, The Greatest Spendthrifts In The Society.

We Are Delighted To Find A Person Who Values Us As We Value Ourselves, And Distinguishes Us From The Rest Of Mankind, With An Attention Not Unlike That With Which We Distinguish Ourselves.

By Pursuing His Own Interest (the Individual) Frequently Promotes That Of The Society More Effectually Than When He Really Intends To Promote It. I Have Never Known Much Good Done By Those Who Affected To Trade For The Public Good.

A Nation Is Not Made Wealthy By The Childish Accumulation Of Shiny Metals, But It Enriched By The Economic Prosperity Of It's People.

The Liberal Reward Of Labor, Therefore, As It Is The Necessary Effect, So It Is The Natural Symptom Of Increasing National Wealth. The Scanty Maintenance Of The Laboring Poor, On The Other Hand, Is The Natural Symptom That Things Are At A Stand, And Their Starving Condition That They Going Backwards Fast.

We Are But One Of The Multitude, In No Respect Better Than Any Other In It.

No Complaint... Is More Common Than That Of A Scarcity Of Money.

Whatever Work He Does, Beyond What Is Sufficient To Purchase His Own Maintenance, Can Be Squeezed Out Of Him By Violence Only, And Not By Any Interest Of His Own.

A Gardener Who Cultivates His Own Garden With His Own Hands, Unites In His Own Person The Three Different Characters, Of Landlord, Farmer, And Labourer. His Produce, Therefore, Should Pay Him The Rent Of The First, The Profit Of The Second, And The Wages Of The Third.

This Is One Of Those Cases In Which The Imagination Is Baffled By The Facts.

Great Ambition, The Desire Of Real Superiority, Of Leading And Directing, Seems To Be Altogether Peculiar To Man, And Speech Is The Great Instrument Of Ambition.

Every Tax Ought To Be So Contrived As Both To Take Out And To Keep Out Of The Pockets Of The People As Little As Possible, Over And Above What It Brings Into The Public Treasury Of The State.

Individual Ambition Serves The Common Good.

That A Joint Stock Company Should Be Able To Carry On Successfully Any Branch Of Foreign Trade, When Private Adventurers Can Come Into Any Sort Of Open And Fair Competition With Them, Seems Contrary To All Experience.

Among Civilized And Thriving Nations, On The Contrary, Though A Great Number Of People Do No Labor At All, Many Of Whom Consume The Produce Of Ten Times, Frequently Of A Hundred Times More Labour Than The Greater Part Of Those Who Work; Yet The Produce Of The Whole Labour Of The Society Is So Great, That All Are Often Abundantly Supplied, And A Workman, Even Of The Lowest And Poorest Order, If He Is Frugal And Industrious, May Enjoy A Greater Share Of The Necessaries And Conveniencies Of Life Than It Is Possible For Any Savage To Acquire.

Resentment Seems To Have Been Given Us By Nature For A Defense, And For A Defense Only! It Is The Safeguard Of Justice And The Security Of Innocence.

All Money Is A Matter Of Belief.

Nothing But The Most Exemplary Morals Can Give Dignity To A Man Of Small Fortune.

Thus The Labour Of A Manufacture Adds, Generally, To The Value Of The Materials Which He Works Upon, That Of His Own Maintenance, And Of His Masters Profits. The Labour Of A Menial Servant, On The Contrary, Adds To The Value Of Nothing.

That Wealth And Greatness Are Often Regarded With The Respect And Admiration Which Are Due Only To Wisdom And Virtue; And That The Contempt, Of Which Vice And Folly Are The Only Proper Objects, Is Most Often Unjustly Bestowed Upon Poverty And Weakness, Has Been The Complaint Of Moralists In All Ages.

The Value Of Any Commodity, Therefore, To The Person Who Possesses It, And Who Means Not To Use Or Consume It Himself, But To Exchange It For Other Commodities, Is Equal To The Quantity Of Labour Which It Enables Him To Purchase Or Command. Labour, Therefore, Is The Real Measure Of The Exchangeable Value Of All Commodities. The Real Price Of Everything, What Everything Really Costs To The Man Who Wants To Acquire It, Is The Toil And Trouble Of Acquiring It.

When Profit Diminishes, Merchants Are Very Apt To Complain That Trade Decays; Though The Diminution Of Profit Is The Natural Effect Of Its Prosperity, Or Of A Greater Stock Being Employed In It Than Before.

Little Else Is Requisite To Carry A State To The Highest Degree Of Opulence From The Lowest Barbarism But Peace, Easy Taxes, And A Tolerable Administration Of Justice: All The Rest Being Brought About By The Natural Course Of Things.

For A Very Small Expence The Public Can Facilitate, Can Encourage, And Can Even Impose Upon Almost The Whole Body Of The People, The Necessity Of Acquiring Those Most Essential Parts Of Education.

Progressive Taxation

The Uniform, Constant, And Uninterrupted Effort Of Every Man To Better His Condition . . . Is Frequently Powerful Enough To Maintain The Natural Progress Of Things Toward Improvement, In Spite Of The Extravagance Of Government, And Of The Greatest Errors Of Administration.

Masters Are Always And Everywhere In A Sort Of Tacit, But Constant And Uniform Combination, Not To Raise The Wages Of Labor.

It Is The Interest Of Every Man To Live As Much At His Ease As He Can; And If His Emoluments Are To Be Precisely The Same, Whether He Does Or Does Not Perform Some Very Laborious Duty, It Is Certainly His Interest, At Least As Interest Is Vulgarly Understood, Either To Neglect It Altogether, Or, If He Is Subject To Some Authority Which Will Not Suffer Him To Do This, To Perform It In As Careless And Slovenly A Manner As That Authority Will Permit.

With The Greater Part Of Rich People, The Chief Enjoyment Of Riches Consists In The Parade Of Riches, Which In Their Eye Is Never So Complete As When They Appear To Possess Those Decisive Marks Of Opulence Which Nobody Can Possess But Themselves.

Every Individual Necessarily Labors To Render The Annual Revenue Of Society As Great As He Can. He Generally Neither Intends To Promote The Public Interest, Nor Knows How Much He Is Promoting It. He Intends Only His Own Gain, And He Is, In This, As In Many Other Cases, Led By An Invisible Hand To Promote An End Which Was Not Part Of His Intention.

The Proprietor Of Stock Is Necessarily A Citizen Of The World, And Is Not Necessarily Attached To Any Particular Country.

It Seldom Happens, However, That A Great Proprietor Is A Great Improver.

The Subjects Of Every State Ought To Contribute Towards The Support Of The Government, As Nearly As Possible, In Proportion To Their Respective Abilities.

I Neither Have, Nor Can Have, Any Other Way Of Judging About Them.

I Have No Faith In Political Arithmetic.

The Man Of System, On The Contrary, Is Apt To Be Very Wise In His Own Conceit; And Is Often So Enamoured With The Supposed Beauty Of His Own Ideal Plan Of Government, That He Cannot Suffer The Smallest Deviation From Any Part Of It... He Seems To Imagine That He Can Arrange The Different Members Of A Great Society With As Much Ease As The Hand Arranges The Different Pieces Upon A Chess-board. He Does Not Consider That...in The Great Chess-board Of Human Society, Every Single Piece Has A Principle Of Motion Of Its Own, Altogether Different From That Which The Legislature Might Choose To Impress Upon It.

Every Individual Is Continually Exerting Himself To Find Out The Most Advantageous Employment For Whatever Capital He Can Command. It Is His Own Advantage, Indeed, And Not That Of The Society Which He Has In View. But The Study Of His Own Advantage Naturally, Or Rather Necessarily, Leads Him To Prefer That Employment Which Is Most Advantageous To Society... He Intends Only His Own Gain, And He Is In This, As In Many Other Cases, Led By An Invisible Hand To Promote An End Which Was Not Part Of His Intention

It Would Be Too Ridiculous To Go About Seriously To Prove That Wealth Does Not Consist In Money, Or In Gold And Silver; But In What Money Purchases, And Is Valuable Only For Purchasing.
