Now I Think One Of The Reasons Why Religion Developed In The Way That It Did Over The Centuries Was Precisely To Curb This Murderous Bent That We Have As Human Beings.

When Violence Becomes Imbedded In A Region, Then This Affects Everything. It Affects Your Dreams, Your Fantasies And Relationships, And Your Religion Becomes Violent, Too.

A Mode Of Knowledge Rooted In Silence And Intuitive Insight Which Gives Meaning To Life But Which Cannot Be Explained In Rational Terms.

We Want To Create, Never Mind The Leaders Or The Bishops Or Chief Rabbis Or Imams, Or Popes. We Want To Create A Grassroots Movement Where People Will Become Attuned To Uncompassionate Discourse In The Same Way As We Are Now Attuned To Sort Of Gender Imbalance In Our Speech.

Let Us Bring Something New To The Table. Let Us Use Our Pain Always To Remember The Others, Bring Them Into The Conversation, And Get Beyond The Stereotypes And Prejudices That Create Injustice All Over The World.

Whatever Conclusions We Reach About The Reality Of God, The History Of This Idea Must Tell Us Something Important About The Human Mind And The Nature Of Our Aspiration.

Respect Only Has Meaning As Respect For Those With Whom I Do Not Agree.

Today We Often Think That Before We Start Living A Religious Life We Have First To Accept The Creedal Doctrines And That Before One Can Have Any Comprehension Of The Loyalty And Trust Of Faith, One Must First Force One's Mind To Accept A Host Of Incomprehensible Doctrines. But This Is To Put The Cart Before The Horse.

Intelligence Doesn't Just Mean Tracking Down Terrorists; It Means Finding Out What Is In People's Hearts And Minds And Discovering The Complexity Of Most Issues.

People Knew There Were Two Ways Of Coming At Truth. One Was Science, Or What The Greeks Called Logos, Reason, Logic. And That Was Essential That The Discourse Of Science Or Logic Related Directed To The External World. The Other Was Mythos, What The Greeks Called Myth, Which Didn't Mean A Fantasy Story, But It Was A Narrative Associated With Ritual And Ethical Practice But It Helped Us To Address Problems For Which There Were No Easy Answers, Like Mortality, Cruelty, The Sorrow That Overtakes Us All That's Part Of The Human Condition. And These Two Were Not In Opposition, We Needed Both.

A Science Can Diagnose A Cancer And Can Even Find A Cure For It, But It Can't, And A Scientist Will Be The First To Say, It's Can't Help You To Deal With The Stress And Disappointment And Terror That Comes With A Diagnosis, And Nor Can It Help You To Die Well, Like Socrates, Kindly, Not Railing Against Faith, But In Possession Of Your Own Death. For These Imponderable Questions People Have Turned To Mythos.

Well, Logos Is Science Or Reason, Something That Helps Us To Function Practically And Effectively In The World, And It Must Therefore Be Closely In Tune And Reflect Accurately The Realities Of The World Around Us.

When You Feel Compassion, You Dethrone Yourself From The Centre Of The World.

After A Time I Found That I Could Almost Listen To The Silence, Which Had A Dimension All Of Its Own. I Started To Attend To Its Strange And Beautiful Texture, Which Of Course, It Was Impossible To Express In Words. I Discovered That I Felt At Home And Alive In The Silence, Which Compelled Me To Enter My Interior World And Around There. Without The Distraction Of Constant Conversation, The Words On The Page Began To Speak Directly To My Inner Self. They Were No Long Expressing Ideas That Were Simply Interesting Intellectually, But Were Talking Directly To My Own Yearning And Perplexity.

Religion Starts With The Perception That Something Is Wrong.

Religions Have Found That If You Behave In A Certain Way, If You Sort Of Perform Certain Rituals That Expand Your Mind And Make You Realize That Will Make You Realize And Help You To Seguey Into Transcendence And Perform Certain Acts, Adopt A Certain Lifestyle, You Develop New Capacities Of Mind And Heart, Just Like The Dancer, Or The Athlete That Make You Into A Whole Human Being And Principle After One Of These Disciplines Right Across The Board In All Of The Faiths Is Compassion, The Ability To Feel With The Other Person.

The Only Way To Show A True Respect For God Is To Act Morally While Ignoring God’s Existence.

It Is People Who Are Violent, Rather Than "religions"; And Since We Secularised Our Politics We Have Had Two Major World Wars, The Holocaust, The Soviet Gulag, And The Atomic Attacks On Hiroshima And Nagasaki - None Of Which Were Inspired By Religion. If We Want To Understand The Dangers Of Our World, We Can No Longer Accept The Old Received Ideas.

Each Of The World Religions Has Its Own Particular Genius, Its Own Special Insight Into The Nature And Requirements Of Compassion, And Has Something Unique To Teach Us.

We Are Most Creative And Sense Other Possibilities That Transcend Our Ordinary Experience When We Leave Ourselves Behind.

Yet While Nature Is In Constant Flux, We Always Go Against The Grain And Try To Freeze Our Ideas And Experiences And Make Them Absolute. It Is Egotism That Makes Us Identify With One Opinion Rather Than Another, Become Quarrelsome And Unkind, Say *this* Could Not Mean *that*, And Think We Have A Duty To Change Others To Suit Ourselves.

And Sometimes It's The Very Otherness Of A Stranger, Someone Who Doesn't Belong To Our Ethnic Or Ideological Or Religious Group, An Otherness That Can Repel Us Initially, But Which Can Jerk Us Out Of Our Habitual Selfishness, And Give Us Intonations Of That Sacred Otherness, Which Is God.

Compassion Is The Key In Islam And Buddhism And Judaism And Christianity. They Are Profoundly Similar.

In The Past Some Of The Most Influential Jewish, Christian And Muslim Theologians, Such As Maimonides, Aquinas And Ibn Sina, Made It Clear That It Was Very Difficult To Speak About God, Because When We Confront The Ultimate, We Are At The End Of What Words Or Thoughts Can Do.

Alas, All Traditions Lose Their Primal Purity And We All Fail Our Founders.

If We Want To Create A Viable, Peaceful World, We've Got To Integrate Compassion Into The Gritty Realities Of 21st Century Life.

We Have To Make A Disciplined Effort To Find Out What Our Governments Are Doing In These Various Parts Of The World And What Is Actually Happening. We Have To Learn To Listen To Each Other's Stories. Something We Are Not Very Good At.

Mohammed Was Not An Apparent Failure. He Was A Dazzling Success, Politically As Well As Spiritually, And Islam Went From Strength To Strength To Strength.

I Have A Very Sharp Tongue, I'm Very Impatient, And It's A Lifelong Struggle.

Theology Is-- Or Should Be-- A Species Of Poetry,which Read Quickly Or Encountered In A Hubbub Of Noise Makes No Sense. You Have To Open Yourself To A Poem With A Quiet, Receptive Mind, In The Same Way You Might Listen To A Difficult Piece Of Music... If You Seize Upon A Poem And Try To Extort Its Meaning Before You Are Ready, It Remains Opaque. After I Left The Convent, For 15 Years I Was Worn Out With Religion, I Wanted Nothing Whatever To Do With It. I Felt Disgusted With It. If I Saw Someone Reading A Religious Book On A Train, I'd Think, How Awful.

I Have Become Convinced, Through My Studies, That The Only Way To Achieve A Safe, Just And Viable World Is To Live By The Golden Rule. This Is What Drives My Writing. When The Horror Recedes And The World Resumes Its Normal Shape, You Cannot Forget It. You Have Seen What Is Really There, The Empty Horror That Exists When The Consoling Illusion Of Our Mundane Experience Is Stripped Away, So You Can Never Respond To The World In Quite The Same Way Again.

Illness Itself Can Make You Angry, Enraged, Furious, And It Made Me Angry, Enraged, And Furious. I Don't Think It Brought Me To God At All. It Depends How You Deal With It. And I Think That, At Its Best, Three Little Words That Always Have To Be Applied To Religion, Religion Can Help You To Deal With That.

Creation Stories Had Never Been Regarded As Historically Accurate; Their Purpose Was Therapeutic. But Once You Start Reading Genesis As Scientifically Valid, You Have Bad Science And Bad Religion.

Here In America, Religious People Often Prefer To Be Right Rather Than Compassionate. They've Lost The Axial Age Vision Of Concern For Everybody.

If God Is Seen As A Self In A World Of His Own, An Ego That Relates To A Thought, A Cause Separate From Its Effect, He Becomes A Being, Not Being Itself. An Omnipotent, All‐knowing Tyrant Is Not So Different From Earthly Dictators Who Make Everything And Everybody Mere Cogs In The Machine Which They Controlled. An Atheism That Rejects Such A God Is Amply Justified.

Every Fundamentalist Movement I've Studied In Judaism, Christianity And Islam Is Convinced At Some Gut, Visceral Level That Secular Liberal Society Wants To Wipe Out Religion.

I Want To Create A Rapid Response Team, Right Around The World, Perhaps Starting Originally With Our Partners, Similar To The One We Have In The United Nations Whereby, Where There's A Problem In Our Society Which Demands A Compassionate Response, An Educated, Informed, Not Just A Splurgy Emotional Thing, But An Informed Compassionate Response That Puts Yourself In The Position Of The Other And Sees All Sides Of The Problem, Not Just Your Own, There'll Be Somebody Poised In Each Society Who Can Write To The Media, Write An Op-ed Piece, To Go On Tv Or Radio.

God [is] Not The Exclusive Property Of Any One Tradition. The Divine Light [cannot] Be Confined To A Single Lamp, Belonging To The East Or The West, But Enlightens All Human Beings.

Compassion Doesn't, Of Course, Mean Feeling Sorry For People, Or Pity, Which Is How The Word Has Become Emasculated In A Way.

Compassion Has Been Advocated By All The Great Faiths Because It Has Been Found To Be The Safest And Surest Means Of Attaining Enlightenment. It Dethrones The Ego From The Center Of Our Lives And Puts Others There, Breaking Down The Carapace Of The Selfishness That Holds Us Back From An Experience Of The Sacred. And It Gives Us Ecstasy, Broadening Our Perspectives And Giving Us A Larger, Enhanced Vision.

He [aristotle] Pointed Out That People Who Had Become Initiates In The Various Mystery Religions Were Not Required To Learn Any Facts 'but To Experience Certain Emotions And To Be Put In A Certain Disposition.' Hence His Famous Literary Theory That Tragedy Effected A Purification (katharsis) Of The Emotions Of Terror And Pity That Amounted To An Experience Of Rebirth.

Western Liberal Humanism Is Not Something That Comes Naturally To Us: Like An Appreciation Of Art Or Poetry, It Has To Be Cultivated. Humanism Is Itself A Religion Without God-not All Religions, Of Course, Are Theistic. Our Ethical Secular Ideal Has It's Own Disciplines Of Mind And Heart And Gives People The Means Of Finding Faith In The Ultimate Meaning Of Human Life That Were Once Provided By The More Conventional Religions.

Religion Is A Practical Discipline And It's One That We Have Always Done, Ever Since Humanity Appeared On The Scene When Homo Sapiens Became Homo Sapiens. Sapiens Became A Human Being, Our Minds Very Naturally Segue Into Transcendence.

Important Thing About Myth Is That It's Not Just Something That You Believe, A Myth Is Essentially A Program For Action. And Unless You Translate A Mythical Story, Or A Doctrine Out Of The Church, Into Practical Action, It Just Remains Incomprehensible. Rather Like The Rules Of A Board Game Which Seem Very Sort Of Dull And Complicated And Incomprehensible Until You Pick Up The Dice And Start To Play, When Everything Falls Into Place.

You Are Your Best Self When You Give Yourself Away.

The Early Doctrines Of The Church, Even Doctrines Like Trinity And Incarnation Were Originally Also Calls For Action, Calls For Selflessness, Calls For Compassion, And Unless You Live That Out Compassionately, Selflessly, You Didn't Understand What The Doctrine Was Saying.

Compassion Is A Practically Acquired Knowledge, Like Dancing. You Must Do It And Practice Diligently Day By Day.

Sometimes I Call Myself A Freelance, I Can't See Any One Of The Great Religions As Superior To Others.

A Gentleman Is Not Born But Crafted. He Had To Work On Himself In The Same Way As A Sculptor Shaped A Rough Stone And Made It A Thing Of Beauty.

Eventually, With Regret, I Left The Religious Life, And, Once Freed Of The Burden Of Failure And Inadequacy, I Felt My Belief In God Slip Quietly Away. He Had Never Really Impinged Upon My Life, Though I Had Done My Best To Enable Him To Do So. Now That I No Longer Felt So Guilty And Anxious About Him, He Became Too Remote To Be A Reality.

The Awful Atrocities Of Religion Happened When People Assume That God Shares Your Likes And Dislikes. The Crusaders When Into Battle To Kill Muslims And Jews And Cried, "god Will's It." That Was Their Battle Cry. Obviously God Willed No Such Thing. The Crusaders Were Simply Projecting Onto A Deity They'd Created On Their Own Image And Likeness, All Their Hatred And Loathing Of These Faiths And Made It Endorse Some Of Their Most Awful Prejudices And Lethal Prejudices.

Likes And Dislikes

Myth Was Regarded As Primary; It Was Concerned With What Was Thought To Be Timeless And Constant In Our Existence. Myth Looked Back To The Origins Of Life, To The Foundations Of Culture, And To The Deepest Levels Of The Human Mind. Myth Was Not Concerned With Practical Matters, But With Meaning. Unless We Find Some Significance In Our Lives, We Mortal Men And Women Fall Very Easily Into Despair. The Mythos Of A Society Provided People With A Context That Made Sense Of Their Day-to-day Lives; It Directed Their Attention To The Eternal And The Universal.

Ever Since The Crusades, When Christians From Western Europe Were Fighting Holy Wars Against Muslims In The Near East, Western People Have Often Perceived Islam As A Violent And Intolerant Faith - Even Though When This Prejudice Took Root Islam Had A Better Record Of Tolerance Than Christianity.

If We Don't Manage To Implement The Golden Rule Globally, So That We Treat All Peoples, Wherever And Whoever They May Be, As Though They Were As Important As Ourselves, I Doubt That We'll Have A Viable World To Hand On To The Next Generation.

If We Try To Hold On To Our Partial Glimpses Of The Divine, We Cut It Down To Our Own Size And Close Our Minds. Like It Or Nor, Our Human Experience Of Anything Or Anybody Is Always Incomplete: There Is Usually Something That Eludes Us, Some Portion Of Experience That Evades Our Grasp.

It's Quite Common For A Sufi Mystic To Cry In Ecstasy That He's Neither A Jew, A Christian, Nor A Muslim. He Is At Home Equally In A Synagogue, A Mosque, A Temple, Or A Church Because When One's Glimpsed The Divine, One's Left These Man-made Distinctions Behind.

Religion Is A Practical Discipline And In The 17th Century In The West, We Turned It Onto A Head Trip. But It's Like Dancing, Or Swimming, Or Driving, Which You Can't Learn By Texts. You Have To Get Into The Car And Learn How To Manipulate The Vehicle.

It's A Great Event To Get Outside And Enjoy Nature. I Find It Very Exciting No Matter How Many Times I See Bald Eagles.

Religious People Often Prefer To Be Right Rather Than Compassionate. Often, They Don't Want To Give Up Their Egotism. They Want Their Religion To Endorse Their Ego, Their Identity.

From The Rabbis Of The Early Talmudic Age I Learned That There Is Never A Last Word On God. There's, You Always Continue To Question. Even God Himself Could Be Questioned And You Can Keep Arguing With One Another And There Will Be No End To This Conversation About The Divine Because No Human Expression Of God Can Be Ultimate.

Golden Rule Lies At The Heart Of Every Religious And Of Every Ethical System Of Morality, It What Makes Us Look At One Another. The Religions Have All Adopted It Independently, Chinese, Indian, Muslim, Christian, Jewish, Because They Find It Works And Because It Says Something Very Deep About The Structure Of Our Humanity.

The Hajj Is One Of The Five Essential Practices Of Islam; When They Make The Pilgrimage To Mecca, Muslims Ritually Act Out The Central Principles Of Their Faith.

When He Did Turn To Speak To Somebody, He Used To Swing His Entire Body And Address Him Full Face. When He Shook Hands, He Was Never The First To Withdraw His Own. He Inspired Such Confidence That He Was Known As Al-amin, The Reliable One.

I Left The Convent And That Was Because I Wasn't A Very Good Nun. I Could See That I Wasn't Going To Make It. It's Very Difficult To Be A Nun, Or To Live A Religious Life. It's Very Difficult To Live A Life Of Total Celibacy Or A Life Without Any Possessions Or Material Responsibilities At All, Or In Total Obedience To Somebody Else, And Remain A Mature Whole Human Being, And I Knew That I Wasn't Going To Be One Of Those.

All Religions Are Designed To Teach Us How To Live, Joyfully, Serenely, And Kindly, In The Midst Of Suffering.

Jewish, Christian, And Muslim Theologians Have Insisted For Centuries That God Does Not Exist And That There Is 'nothing' Out There; In Making These Assertions, Their Aim Was Not To Deny The Reality Of God But To Safeguard God's Transcendence.

Far From Being The Father Of Jihad, [prophet] Mohammad Was A Peacemaker, Who Risked His Life And Nearly Lost The Loyalty Of His Closest Companions Because He Was Determined To Effect A Reconciliation With Mecca

You Put Yourself In The Receptive Frame Of Mind With Which We Approach Music Or Poetry, Which You Can Measure The Difference On A Neurological Scanner.

The First Person To Promulgate The Golden Rule, Which Was The Bedrock Of This Empathic Spirituality, Was Confucius 500 Years Before Christ.

Religions Don't Own Compassion; It Is A Human Virtue.

In Order To Always Treat Others, As We Would Wish To Be Treated Ourselves, We Have To Learn About Each Other. Not Just Relying On An Op-ed Piece We May Have Read Here, Or A Half-remembered Interview On The Television Program There That Happens To Chime With Our Own Views.

Huge Imbalance In Power Has Resulted In The Alienation, Rage, Fury, And Awful Amoral Terrorism That Has Erupted And Is Erupting At The Present Time. And In Order To Counter This, We Need To Make The Compassionate Voice Of Religion And Morality A Dynamic Force In Our World.
