Today We Often Think That Before We Start Living A Religious Life We Have First To Accept The Creedal Doctrines And That Before One Can Have Any Comprehension Of The Loyalty And Trust Of Faith, One Must First Force One's Mind To Accept A Host Of Incomprehensible Doctrines. But This Is To Put The Cart Before The Horse.

Religion Is Not About Accepting Twenty Impossible Propositions Before Breakfast, But About Doing Things That Change You. It Is A Moral Aesthetic, An Ethical Alchemy. If You Behave In A Certain Way, You Will Be Transformed. The Myths And Laws Of Religion Are Not True Because They They Conform To Some Metaphysical, Scientific Or Historical Reality But Because They Are Life Enhancing. They Tell You How Human Nature Functions, But You Will Not Discover Their Truth Unless You Apply These Myths And Doctrines To Your Own Life And Put Them Into Practice.

My Greatest Solace Is My Study. If I Am Deprived Of My Study, I Can Become Lost, Unhappy And Unhinged.

When Violence Becomes Imbedded In A Region, Then This Affects Everything. It Affects Your Dreams, Your Fantasies And Relationships, And Your Religion Becomes Violent, Too.

Let's Use Our Stories To Encourage Listening To One Another And To Hear Not Just The Good News, But Also The Pain That Lies At The Back Of A Lot Of People's Stories And Histories.

Yes, All Fundamentalists Feel That In A Secular Society, God Has Been Relegated To The Margin, To The Periphery And They Are All In Different Ways Seeking To Drag Him Out Of That Peripheral Position, Back To Center Stage.

Theology Is-- Or Should Be-- A Species Of Poetry,which Read Quickly Or Encountered In A Hubbub Of Noise Makes No Sense. You Have To Open Yourself To A Poem With A Quiet, Receptive Mind, In The Same Way You Might Listen To A Difficult Piece Of Music... If You Seize Upon A Poem And Try To Extort Its Meaning Before You Are Ready, It Remains Opaque. If You Bring Your Own Personal Agenda To Bear Upon It, The Poem Will Close Upon Itself Like A Clam, Because You Have Denied Its Unique And Separate Identity, Its Inviolate Holiness.

Religious People Often Prefer To Be Right Rather Than Compassionate. Often, They Don't Want To Give Up Their Egotism. They Want Their Religion To Endorse Their Ego, Their Identity.

I Like Silence; I'm A Gregarious Loner And Without The Solitude, I Lose My Gregariousness.

Pain Is Something That's Common To Human Life. When We Ignore It, We Aren't Engaging In The Whole Reality, And The Pain Begins To Fester.

Alas, All Traditions Lose Their Primal Purity And We All Fail Our Founders.

Eventually, With Regret, I Left The Religious Life, And, Once Freed Of The Burden Of Failure And Inadequacy, I Felt My Belief In God Slip Quietly Away. He Had Never Really Impinged Upon My Life, Though I Had Done My Best To Enable Him To Do So. Now That I No Longer Felt So Guilty And Anxious About Him, He Became Too Remote To Be A Reality.

And Sometimes It's The Very Otherness Of A Stranger, Someone Who Doesn't Belong To Our Ethnic Or Ideological Or Religious Group, An Otherness That Can Repel Us Initially, But Which Can Jerk Us Out Of Our Habitual Selfishness, And Give Us Intonations Of That Sacred Otherness, Which Is God.

We Are Most Creative And Sense Other Possibilities That Transcend Our Ordinary Experience When We Leave Ourselves Behind.

Mythology And Science Both Extend The Scope Of Human Beings. Like Science And Technology, Mythology, As We Shall See, Is Not About Opting Out Of This World, But About Enabling Us To Live More Intensely Within It.

He [aristotle] Pointed Out That People Who Had Become Initiates In The Various Mystery Religions Were Not Required To Learn Any Facts 'but To Experience Certain Emotions And To Be Put In A Certain Disposition.' Compassion Has Been Advocated By All The Great Faiths Because It Has Been Found To Be The Safest And Surest Means Of Attaining Enlightenment. It Dethrones The Ego From The Center Of Our Lives And Puts Others There, Breaking Down The Carapace Of The Selfishness That Holds Us Back From An Experience Of The Sacred. And It Gives Us Ecstasy, Broadening Our Perspectives And Giving Us A Larger, Enhanced Vision.

Islam Is A Religion Of Success. Unlike Christianity, Which Has As Its Main Image, In The West At Least, A Man Dying In A Devastating, Disgraceful, Helpless Death. The Cross, Crucified, And That Turned Into Victory. Mohammad Was Not An Apparent Failure. If Your Understanding Of The Divine Made You Kinder, More Empathetic, And Impelled You To Express Sympathy In Concrete Acts Of Loving-kindness, This Was Good Theology. But If Your Notion Of God Made You Unkind, Belligerent, Cruel, Of Self-righteous, Or If It Led You To Kill In God's Name, It Was Bad Theology.

At The Beginning Of The Twentieth Century, Every Single Leading Muslim Intellectual Was In Love With The West, And Wanted Their Countries To Look Just Like Britain And France.

Religions Have Found That If You Behave In A Certain Way, If You Sort Of Perform Certain Rituals That Expand Your Mind And Make You Realize That Will Make You Realize And Help You To Seguey Into Transcendence And Perform Certain Acts, Adopt A Certain Lifestyle, You Develop New Capacities Of Mind And Heart, Just Like The Dancer, Or The Athlete That Make You Into A Whole Human Being And Principle After One Of These Disciplines Right Across The Board In All Of The Faiths Is Compassion, The Ability To Feel With The Other Person.

You Know How It Is In The Symphony When You Are Listening To The Symphony, The Last Notes Die Away, And There's Often A Beat Of Silence In The Auditorium Before The Applause Begins. It's A Very Full And Pregnant Silence. Now Theology Should Bring Us To Live Into That Silence, Into That Pregnant Pause.

He Was Decisive And Wholehearted In Everything He Did, So Intent On The Task At Hand That He Never Looked Over His Shoulder, Even If His Cloak Got Caught In A Thorny Bush. When He Did Turn To Speak To Somebody, He Used To Swing His Entire Body And Address Him Full Face. When He Shook Hands, He Was Never The First To Withdraw His Own. The First Person To Promulgate The Golden Rule, Which Was The Bedrock Of This Empathic Spirituality, Was Confucius 500 Years Before Christ.

Storytelling Is Fine As Long As You Can Encourage People To Act On The Stories.

If We Don't Manage To Implement The Golden Rule Globally, So That We Treat All Peoples, Wherever And Whoever They May Be, As Though They Were As Important As Ourselves, I Doubt That We'll Have A Viable World To Hand On To The Next Generation.

Yet While Nature Is In Constant Flux, We Always Go Against The Grain And Try To Freeze Our Ideas And Experiences And Make Them Absolute. It Is Egotism That Makes Us Identify With One Opinion Rather Than Another, Become Quarrelsome And Unkind, Say *this* Could Not Mean *that*, And Think We Have A Duty To Change Others To Suit Ourselves.

Ever Since The Crusades, When Christians From Western Europe Were Fighting Holy Wars Against Muslims In The Near East, Western People Have Often Perceived Islam As A Violent And Intolerant Faith - Even Though When This Prejudice Took Root Islam Had A Better Record Of Tolerance Than Christianity.

Compassion Is Not Feeling Sorry For Others. It's Not Soft. It Requires An Intellectual Effort.

Compassion Is The Key In Islam And Buddhism And Judaism And Christianity. They Are Profoundly Similar.

The Study Of The Traditions Doesn't Necessarily Make You Want To Convert To Another Tradition, But It Helps You To See Your Own Differently And Expands Your Outlook.

It Is Not Difficult To Find A Religious Justification For Killing.

There Is No Ascent To The Heights Without Prior Descent Into Darkness, No New Life Without Some Form Of Death.

That Was Their Battle Cry. Obviously God Willed No Such Thing. The Crusaders Were Simply Projecting Onto A Deity They'd Created On Their Own Image And Likeness, All Their Hatred And Loathing Of These Faiths And Made It Endorse Some Of Their Most Awful Prejudices And Lethal Prejudices.

Theologians In All The Great Faiths Have Devised All Kinds Of Myths To Show That This Type Of Kenosis, Of Self-emptying, Is Found In The Life Of God Itself. They Do Not Do This Because It Sounds Edifying, But Because This Is The Way That Human Nature Seems To Work. We Are Most Creative And Sense Other Possibilities That Transcend Our Ordinary Experience When We Leave Ourselves Behind.

We Have Domesticated God's Transcendence. We Often Learn About God At About The Same Time As We Are Learning About Santa Claus; But Our Ideas About Santa Claus Change, Mature And Become More Nuanced, Whereas Our Ideas Of God Can Remain At A Rather Infantile Level.

I Was A Lousy Nun. I Couldn't Do It. I Couldn't Find God. It Wasn't Suitable For Me. It Is Suitable For Very Few People.

Respect Only Has Meaning As Respect For Those With Whom I Do Not Agree.

Important Thing About Myth Is That It's Not Just Something That You Believe, A Myth Is Essentially A Program For Action. And Unless You Translate A Mythical Story, Or A Doctrine Out Of The Church, Into Practical Action, It Just Remains Incomprehensible. We Talk About God As Though He Was Like A Somebody. We Ask Him To Bless Our Nation, Or Save Our Queen, Or Give Us A Fine Day For The Picnic. And We Actually Expect Him To Be On Our Side In An Election Or War Even Though Our Opponents Are Also God's Children.

Religion Isn’t About Believing Things. It's Ethical Alchemy. It’s About Behaving In A Way That Changes You, That Gives You Intimations Of Holiness And Sacredness.

Well, Logos Is Science Or Reason, Something That Helps Us To Function Practically And Effectively In The World, And It Must Therefore Be Closely In Tune And Reflect Accurately The Realities Of The World Around Us.

Golden Rule Lies At The Heart Of Every Religious And Of Every Ethical System Of Morality, It What Makes Us Look At One Another. The Religions Have All Adopted It Independently, Chinese, Indian, Muslim, Christian, Jewish, Because They Find It Works And Because It Says Something Very Deep About The Structure Of Our Humanity.

The Values Of Islam Are Expressed By Muslims Clearly. September 11 Changed The World, And Put Muslims On The Spotlight.

Mohammed Was Not An Apparent Failure. He Was A Dazzling Success, Politically As Well As Spiritually, And Islam Went From Strength To Strength To Strength.

The Early Doctrines Of The Church, Even Doctrines Like Trinity And Incarnation Were Originally Also Calls For Action, Calls For Selflessness, Calls For Compassion, And Unless You Live That Out Compassionately, Selflessly, You Didn't Understand What The Doctrine Was Saying.

If We Try To Hold On To Our Partial Glimpses Of The Divine, We Cut It Down To Our Own Size And Close Our Minds. Like It Or Nor, Our Human Experience Of Anything Or Anybody Is Always Incomplete: There Is Usually Something That Eludes Us, Some Portion Of Experience That Evades Our Grasp.

Religion Is A Practical Discipline And It's One That We Have Always Done, Ever Since Humanity Appeared On The Scene When Homo Sapiens Became Homo Sapiens. Sapiens Became A Human Being, Our Minds Very Naturally Segue Into Transcendence.

We Are What We Are Because Of The Hard Work, Insights And Achievements Of Countless Others.

If It Is Not Tempered By Compassion, And Empathy, Reason Can Lead Men And Women Into A Moral Void.

Compassion Has To Become A Discipline. It's Something That You Do. It's No Good Thinking That You Agree With Compassion Or Not, You've Just Got To Do It. Just Like It's No Good Agreeing That It's Possible To Float, You Just Have To Get Into The Pool And Then You Learn That It's Possible.

Religious Ideas And Practices Take Root Not Because They Are Promoted By Forceful Theologians, Nor Because They Can Be Shown To Have A Sound Historical Or Rational Basis, But Because They Are Found In Practice To Give The Faithful A Sense Of Sacred Transcendence.

Compassion Is Not A Popular Virtue. Very Often When I Talk To Religious People, And Mention How Important It Is That Compassion Is The Key, That It's The Sine-qua-non Of Religion, People Look Kind Of Balked, And Stubborn Sometimes, As Much To Say, What's The Point Of Having Religion If You Can't Disapprove Of Other People?

But Human Beings Fall Easily Into Despair, And From The Very Beginning We Invented Stories That Enabled Us To Place Our Lives In A Larger Setting, That Revealed An Underlying Pattern, And Gave Us A Sense That, Against All The Depressing And Chaotic Evidence To The Contrary, Life Had Meaning And Value.

All Religions Are Designed To Teach Us How To Live, Joyfully, Serenely, And Kindly, In The Midst Of Suffering.

In The Holy City Of Mecca, Violence Of Any Kind Was Forbidden. From The Moment They Left Home, Pilgrims Were Not Permitted To Carry Weapons, To Swat An Insect Or Speak An Angry Word, A Discipline That Introduced Them To A New Way Of Living.

I Learned A Lot From Both, Initially Jewish And Muslim Theologians That Had Been Missing, Perhaps From My Rather Parochial Catholic Upbringing.

A God Who Kept Tinkering With The Universe Was Absurd; A God Who Interfered With Human Freedom And Creativity Was A Tyrant. If God Is Seen As A Self In A World Of His Own, An Ego That Relates To A Thought, A Cause Separate From Its Effect, He Becomes A Being, Not Being Itself. An Omnipotent, All‐knowing Tyrant Is Not So Different From Earthly Dictators Who Make Everything And Everybody Mere Cogs In The Machine Which They Controlled. An Atheism That Rejects Such A God Is Amply Justified.

After A Time I Found That I Could Almost Listen To The Silence, Which Had A Dimension All Of Its Own. I Started To Attend To Its Strange And Beautiful Texture, Which Of Course, It Was Impossible To Express In Words. I Discovered That I Felt At Home And Alive In The Silence, Which Compelled Me To Enter My Interior World And Around There. Without The Distraction Of Constant Conversation, The Words On The Page Began To Speak Directly To My Inner Self. They Were No Long Expressing Ideas That Were Simply Interesting Intellectually, But Were Talking Directly To My Own Yearning And Perplexity.

Intelligence Doesn't Just Mean Tracking Down Terrorists; It Means Finding Out What Is In People's Hearts And Minds And Discovering The Complexity Of Most Issues.

People Knew There Were Two Ways Of Coming At Truth. One Was Science, Or What The Greeks Called Logos, Reason, Logic. And That Was Essential That The Discourse Of Science Or Logic Related Directed To The External World. The Other Was Mythos, What The Greeks Called Myth, Which Didn't Mean A Fantasy Story, But It Was A Narrative Associated With Ritual And Ethical Practice But It Helped Us To Address Problems For Which There Were No Easy Answers, Like Mortality, Cruelty, The Sorrow That Overtakes Us All That's Part Of The Human Condition. And These Two Were Not In Opposition, We Needed Both.

I Have Become Convinced, Through My Studies, That The Only Way To Achieve A Safe, Just And Viable World Is To Live By The Golden Rule. This Is What Drives My Writing. I Want To Point Out This Interconnectedness, Point Out The Beauty Of The Faith In All Traditions Without Exception, Show The Complexity Of The Atrocities That We Have Experienced, And Our Shared Culpability As A Species.

I Am Continually Trying To Find Meaning In The World. If We Cannot Find Some Ultimate Significance Or Value In Our Lives, We Fall Very Easily Into Despair.

A Science Can Diagnose A Cancer And Can Even Find A Cure For It, But It Can't, And A Scientist Will Be The First To Say, It's Can't Help You To Deal With The Stress And Disappointment And Terror That Comes With A Diagnosis, And Nor Can It Help You To Die Well, Like Socrates, Kindly, Not Railing Against Faith, But In Possession Of Your Own Death. For These Imponderable Questions People Have Turned To Mythos.

My Study Of Religion, Which I Regard In Many Ways As An Art Form, Is A Search For Meaning.

Geniuses Are Not Always Pleasant People.

The More Aggressive Our Ideologies Become, The More Aggressive Our Discourse Whether It's In The United States, From Washington D.c., Or Whether It's From Tehran, Or From Some Underground Al-qaeda Cell. The More Aggressive That Discourse Is, The More People Of Moderate Persuasion Have To Organize And Speak A Voice Of Compassion. That Means To Feel With The Other.

Huge Imbalance In Power Has Resulted In The Alienation, Rage, Fury, And Awful Amoral Terrorism That Has Erupted And Is Erupting At The Present Time. And In Order To Counter This, We Need To Make The Compassionate Voice Of Religion And Morality A Dynamic Force In Our World.

Religion Is Hard Work. Its Insights Are Not Self-evident And Have To Be Cultivated In The Same Way As An Appreciation Of Art, Music, Or Poetry Must Be Developed.

It Is People Who Are Violent, Rather Than "religions"; And Since We Secularised Our Politics We Have Had Two Major World Wars, The Holocaust, The Soviet Gulag, And The Atomic Attacks On Hiroshima And Nagasaki - None Of Which Were Inspired By Religion. If We Want To Understand The Dangers Of Our World, We Can No Longer Accept The Old Received Ideas.

Now I Think One Of The Reasons Why Religion Developed In The Way That It Did Over The Centuries Was Precisely To Curb This Murderous Bent That We Have As Human Beings.

A Mode Of Knowledge Rooted In Silence And Intuitive Insight Which Gives Meaning To Life But Which Cannot Be Explained In Rational Terms.

If It Is Written And Read With Serious Attention, A Novel, Like A Myth Or Any Great Work Of Art, Can Become An Initiation That Helps Us To Make A Painful Rite Of Passage From One Phase Of Life, One State Of Mind, To Another. A Novel, Like A Myth, Teaches Us To See The World Differently; It Shows Us How To Look Into Our Own Hearts And To See Our World From A Perspective That Goes Beyond Our Own Self-interest.

Like Art, Religion Is An Imaginative And Creative Effort To Find A Meaning And Value In Human Life.

I Am Not Interested In The Afterlife. Religion Is Supposed To Be About Losing Your Ego, Not Preserving It Eternally In Optimum Conditions.

I Want To Create A Rapid Response Team, Right Around The World, Perhaps Starting Originally With Our Partners, Similar To The One We Have In The United Nations Whereby, Where There's A Problem In Our Society Which Demands A Compassionate Response, An Educated, Informed, Not Just A Splurgy Emotional Thing, But An Informed Compassionate Response That Puts Yourself In The Position Of The Other And Sees All Sides Of The Problem, Not Just Your Own, There'll Be Somebody Poised In Each Society Who Can Write To The Media, Write An Op-ed Piece, To Go On Tv Or Radio.

Look Into Your Own Heart, Discover What It Is That Gives You Pain And Then Refuse, Under Any Circumstance Whatsoever, To Inflict That Pain On Anybody Else.

If We Want To Create A Viable, Peaceful World, We've Got To Integrate Compassion Into The Gritty Realities Of 21st Century Life.
