That's What's Important To Me Is That Everybody - And I Don't Care What Side You're On. You Can Disagree With Me, But Everyone Better Get Active. Everybody Better Vote And Be Thoughtful.

I Was Very Combative As A Creative Person At That Time [while The Ben Stiller Show]. I Didn't Understand How To Play Politics With The Studios. I Didn't Know How To Creatively Collaborate With The People Who Were Paying The Bills, And That Came Up All The Time On Every Project I Was Doing, And It Took Me A Really Long Time To Figure Out How To Collaborate In A Healthy Way.

Nobody's Going To Like My Next Movie Because They Liked Trainwreck [2015]. It Has To Work On Its Own, And That Keeps It Really Scary.

I Test The Movies A Lot, And If The Audience Says They Love The Movie, We Know We're On The Right Track. And If They Tell Me They Hate It, I Try To Figure Out What I've Done Wrong. But Every Time Out, The Audience Wants Me To Go Deeper, They Want To Know More About The Characters, And They Don't Want These Movies To Be Shallow. So They Really Urge Me To Tell Them A Complicated Story, And Then When I Do So, They're Thrilled

Watching Shows On Netflix Is A Different Experience Because Most People Are Sitting There For Three To Five Hours. Very Few People Even Watch One Episode. So It's Not Like A Movie Theater Where You Want To The Movies To Be Shorter So You Can Go Urinate. You Can Pause And Urinate At Home, And If Something Is Longer, You're Allowed To Stop And Eat Breakfast And Then Watch Eight More Episodes.

Well, Every Movie Is An Experiment. And The Only Way You Can Grow At What You're Doing Is To Take Chances. You Can't Try To Stick With What Worked Last Time.

He Always Owned Small Labels As Well - He Had A Label Called Mainstream Records In The 70s.

I Was A Big Tv Kid.when I Was A Kid, I Would Go Home At 3:00 And Watch Tv Straight Through To The End Of Letterman At 1:30 In The Morning.i Was Obsessed With Comics.and I Would Watch Jerry Seinfeld And Jay Leno And Study Them As If It Was Tolstoy.

I Loved Working In Stand-up, And I Always Dreamed That I Could Make A Movie About It. I Didn't Know If I Would Have The Courage To, Because If You Make A Bad Movie About Stand-up, Then Comedians Will Mock You For The Rest Of Your Life. They're Still Mad About Movies Made 25 Years Ago. But It Was Always A Dream Of Mine, And I Was Glad I Finally Came Up With An Idea That Allowed Me To Explore It In Such A Way That It's Not All About Stand-up, But Stand-up Creates A Great Backdrop For Another Type Of Story.

The Ones [comedies] That I Always Liked, Whether It's Terms Of Endearment, Broadcast News, Or Fast Times Of Ridgemont High, They Were All About Two Hours, Or A Little Bit Over Two Hours. With That Extra 15 Or 20 Minutes, You Can Get To Real Character And You're Not Just Stuck In Plot.

Right When I Started Getting Solid Was When I Was Offered A Lot Of Writing Work. And When The Ben Stiller Show Was Picked Up, I Realized There Was No Way For Me To Do Stand-up Three Or Four Nights A Week And Run This Television Show With Ben. So That Was The Moment When I Had To Make A Choice.

I Try To Just Save A Fresh, Clear Head For Whoever I'm Working With, So Hopefully It's Helpful That There's Someone Who Doesn't Have To Sit In The Editing Room For 12 Hours A Day, And Who's Blinded By The Massive Footage And Options That They Have.

There's Something Honorable About Holding Out For Love And Not Breaking Up For The Sake Of The Baby. I See People Get Divorced, And There Is A Part Of Me That Thinks, I Wonder How Hard They Tried?

I Still Feel Like A Nerd.

When People Lose Their Jobs, They Can Either Get Another Job Or Be Entrepreneurs. In The Music Industry, A Lot Of People Have Attempted The Latter By Starting Their Own Labels, But In The Age Of Digital Downloads, It's Very Difficult To Succeed.

You Should Look Up Some Of The Reviews. The New York Times Review Is So Over-the-top Funny. It's Hysterical. You Should Dig It Out.

I Thought The Idea Jim [carrey] Had, Which Was To Do A Comedic Version Of Movies Like The Hand That Rocks The Cradle And Unlawful Entry, Was Really Funny. The Movie Was A Little Lighter When We First Came On, A Little More Like What About Bob? Or Something.

Literally, My Last Call Was With David Blaine, Congratulating Him On His Show. I Have A Camaraderie With David.

Some Stories Feel Like They Need More Time Or Less Time To Tell. To Not Obsessively Have To Trim Or Add That Final Two Or Three Minutes Is Very Helpful, Because You Can Just Organically Follow How The Story Feels.

I've Always Appreciated People Like Graham Parker Or Loudon Wainwright Iii, Who Spend Their Entire Lives Writing Songs And Working Their Asses Off Just To Have Complete Artistic Freedom. They're Just Sharing Their Lives With You Through Their Music. That's The Same Kind Of Work That I'm Trying To Do, In My Own Weird Way.

I Love Magazines And Film Critics, So I Eat It Up. I'm Not One Of Those People Who Says 'i Never Read Anything.' I Generally Read All Of It.

I Always See Other People As Predecessors And Admire Them.

Even Now If I See Someone Working Out, In Great Shape, Like A 40-year-old Guy With His Shirt Off Jogging I Always Think, "look At That Idiot." That's Why Everyone In My Movie Is Kind Of Goofy Because I'm A Champion Of The Goofball. What Sucks Is I Have To Work Out Now Not To Die. I Was Always Happy Not Working Out Because I Never Wanted To Be Someone Who Worked Out To Look Good, But Now I Have To Try To Not Die, Which Is Such A Drag.

Maybe You Just Get So Attached To The Music Of Your Youth That You Think It's Better Than What's Coming Out Now.

I Think It's Fun To Have People See Everything At Once, And Then I Think Certain Shows Are Very Well-suited To Being On Every Week And Being Spread Out Over Months.

I Think We All Have A Love/hate Relationship With The Media.

At Network Television You Could Make A Show Like Freaks And Geeks, And Even Though 7 Million People Watch Is Every Week, You Were Considered A Terrible Failure, And They Got Rid Of You And Staff. Now ... It's Like A World Where The Replacements Are The Biggest Fans In The World. It's, The Elvis Costellos Of Television Are The Winners. Creativity Is King And It's Very Very Exciting.

The Audience Doesn't Care That Most Of Happened. They Just Want A Good Movie.

I Think Jim [carrey], In The Best Possible Way, Thought, "i Need To Do Different Things To Establish To The Audience That I'm Not Going To Do The Same Thing Every Time."

Some People Are Probably Saner. They're Good Performers, And They Go About Their Day. I Just Get Obsessive About It.

I Have A Four-and-a-half-year-old And, When She Was Two And A Half, She Would Make My Wife And I Do Voices, Like Woody And Jessie The Cowgirl, Or Elmo, Or Yogi Bear And Booboo. If We Didn't Do It, She Would Scream At Us. So, My Wife And I Would Have Adult Conversations As Yogi Bear And Booboo. It Was Just A Nightmare Year.

I Did Get Good Enough To Get On Hbo's Young Comedians Special, But I Certainly Wasn't The Person Who Got Launched Off Of Hbo's Young Comedians Special. That Would Be Ray Romano That Year. I Had Some Semi-intelligent Jokes, But When People Would See Me, They Would Think, "oh, That's A Good Writer." No One Would Ever Have Said, "oh, That's A Good Performer."

It's A Pretty Humiliating Thing When You Get Picked Last Every Day In Gym Class And Then At Lunchtime All The Kids Play Sports And You Get Picked Last. At The Time I Just Thought, "this Is Awful," Because It Defines You As A Weak Person. It Defines You With Girls And If You're Bad At Sports, You Get Into This Funny Cycle Where The Ball Never Gets To You Because Now You're In The Worst Position, You're In Deep Right Field, So You Can Never Prove That You Got Better, So The Cycle Lasts Forever.

I Bring People On To The Movies To Type And To Help Punch Up And Look At Things. But A Lot Of It Is, You Want Fun People To Be Around, To Put You In A Good Mood, To Try And Access Your Creative Place.

As A Kid, I Was Obsessed With The Who. They Were The Most Important Band To Me. Songs Like "i'm One" Helped Me Get Through High School.

In My Beginnings, Those Nos Were Ever-present-even Today, Those Nos Are Ever-present-and It's The Workaround. I Always Found A Workaround For People Who Turned Their Back To Me. It's A Way Of Being Persistent That Makes Them Take Notice.

I'm Always Surprised When You Do Something Very Different That People Don't Get Behind You More, Because You're Always Told, "take Chances! Stretch!" And When You Do It, Sometimes People Get Really Supportive And Excited, But Sometimes People Go At You Because You've Tossed Out The Formula.

It Was Always The Most Fun Thing In The World To Think Of A Joke Area And Talk About It With Someone Like Jim Carrey, And Then He Would Get On Stage Fearlessly And Tear The House Down. That's Something I Always Enjoyed. It Also Allowed Me To Not Be Terrified.

The First Comedians I Became Fascinated With Were The Marx Brothers. I Couldn't Get Enough Of Them. Later In Life, I Thought, "well, Maybe It's Because They Were So Rebellious And They Were Just Flipping The Bird To Society And All The Rules We're Supposed To Follow." They Were Saying That None Of It Is Fair.

I Start Casting Early In The Writing Process, So I Can Tailor The Script To The Gifts Of The Actors.

I Used To Bug All Of The Comedians For Interviews, And When People Want To Talk To Me, Sometimes I'm Very Receptive And Sometimes I Say No. Sometimes If I Say No, I Think, "if They're Smart, They'll Figure Out How To Not Accept This No."

In My Work, There Is A Lot Of Storytelling. The Storytelling Is Not A New Thing. And Then They Come Back To Him, And They Tell Him How They Did. So In Every Episode He's Like, How Did - How'd Meatloaf Do, Ivanka? And Then She Says, Meatloaf Really Did A Great Presentation. And Then He Makes Some Impulsive Decision About Who To Fire Based On Not Being There, Not Really Even Understanding Anything.

If Anything Is Leaking, I Try To Plug The Hole.

I Was Bad At Sports And Picked Last Every Day. I Couldn't Quite Figure Out What My Role Was In The Social Order, So I Decided I Was Interested In Comedy. And What Was Then Interesting Was, Nobody Else Was Interested In It At All. I Didn't Find One Friend Who Was Interested In Comedy Until I Moved To California And Met Other Comedians. And Suddenly I Knew Hundreds Of People Who Knew As Much About Sctv As I Did. But It Took Me 20 Years To Find Those People.

Nowadays, When Kids Decide They Like An Artist, They'll Absorb Everything That Artist Has Ever Done In A Single Night.

I Don't Think Because A Story Has Humor In It Means It's Brief. For Some Reason, People Think Anything That's 30 Minutes Is A Comedy, Comedies Can Be Longer Or Shorter, So Can Dramas.

People Like The Comedy More When They Care About The Characters.

I Really Think More About Being Honest And Truthful About Feelings And How People Behave For The Movies That I Direct, But I Also Love Movies Like Zohan And Anchorman, Just Balls To The Wall, How Much Can You Make People Laugh In One 90 Minute Period.

I Like Working With People On Their First Movies. I Think That You Never Get That Level Of Effort Again. And I Think That Most People Only Have A Couple Of Amazing Stories From Their Lives, So You're Getting The Best Of Them.
