Twenty Or Thirty Years Ago, In The Army, We Had A Lot Of Obscure Adventures, And Years Later We Tell Them At Parties, And Suddenly We Realize That Those Two Very Difficult Years Of Our Lives Have Become Lumped Together Into A Few Episodes That Have Lodged In Our Memory In A Standardized Form, And Are Always Told In A Standardized Way, In The Same Words. But In Fact That Lump Of Memories Has Nothing Whatsoever To Do With Our Experience Of Those Two Years In The Army And What It Has Made Of Us.

But If I Were To Say Who Influenced Me Most, Then I'd Say Franz Kafka. And His Works Were Always Anchored In The Central European Region.

I Am Not Sure One Is Capable Of Reflecting Absurdity Without Having A Strong Sense Of Meaning. Absurdity Makes Sense Only Against A Meaningful Background. It Is The Deeper Meaning That Is Shedding Light On The Absurdity. There Must Be A Vanish Point, A Metaphysical Horizon If You Will Where Absurdity And Meaning Merge.

Our Country, If That Is What We Want, Can Now Permanently Radiate Love, Understanding, The Power Of The Spirit And Of Ideas. It Is Precisely This Glow That We Can Offer As Our Specific Contribution To International Politics.

Modern Man Must Descend The Spiral Of His Own Absurdity To The Lowest Point; Only Then Can He Look Beyond It. It Is Obviously Impossible To Get Around It, Jump Over It, Or Simply Avoid It.

People Have Passed Through A Very Dark Tunnel At The End Of Which There Was A Light Of Freedom. Unexpectedly They Passed Through The Prison Gates And Found Themselves In A Square. They Are Now Free And They Don't Know Where To Go.

Ownership Is Not A Vice, Not Something To Be Ashamed Of, But Rather A Commitment, And An Instrument By Which The General Good Can Be Served.

There Appear To Be No Integrating Forces, No Unified Meaning, No True Inner Understanding Of Phenomena In Our Experience Of The World. Experts Can Explain Anything In The Objective World To Us, Yet We Understand Our Own Lives Less And Less. In Short, We Live In The Postmodern World, Where Everything Is Possible And Almost Nothing Is Certain.

The Real Test Of A Man Is Not When He Plays The Role That He Wants For Himself But When He Plays The Role Destiny Has For Him.

I Feel That The Dormant Goodwill In People Needs To Be Stirred. People Need To Hear That It Makes Sense To Behave Decently Or To Help Others, To Place Common Interests Above Their Own, To Respect The Elementary Rules Of Human Coexistence.

The Exercise Of Power Is Determined By Thousands Of Interactions Between The World Of The Powerful And That Of The Powerless, All The More So Because These Worlds Are Never Divided By A Sharp Line: Everyone Has A Small Part Of Himself In Both.

It's Not True That You Should First Think Up An Idea For A Better World And Only Then "put It Into Practice," But, Rather, Through The Fact Of Your Existence In The World, You Create The Idea Or Manifest It - Create It, As It Were, From The "material Of The World," Articulate It In The "language Of The World."

Without Free, Self-respecting, And Autonomous Citizens There Can Be No Free And Independent Nations. Without Internal Peace, That Is, Peace Among Citizens And Between The Citizens And The State, There Can Be No Guarantee Of External Peace.

This Is A Confusing And Uncertain Period, When A Thousand Wise Words Can Go Completely Unnoticed, And One Thoughtless Word Can Provoke An Utterly Nonsensical Furor.

President Murabak Has Been A U.s. Ally For Decades. He Was A Guarantor Of Some Degree Of Peace In The Middle East And Has Kept A Good Relationship With The Western World.

I Am Convinced That We Will Never Build A Democratic State Based On Rule Of Law If We Do Not At The Same Time Build A State That Is-regardless Of How Unscientific This May Sound To The Ears Of A Political Scientist-humane, Moral, Intellectual And Spiritual, And Cultural.

We Must Come To Understand The Deep Mutual Connection Or Kinship Between The Various Forms Of Our Spirituality. We Must Recollect Our Original Spiritual And Moral Substance, Which Grew Out Of The Same Essential Experience Of Humanity. I Believe That This Is The Only Way To Achieve A Genuine Renewal Of Our Sense Of Responsibility For Ourselves And For The World. And At The Same Time, It Is The Only Way To Achieve A Deeper Understanding Among Cultures That Will Enable Them To Work Together In A Truly Ecumenical Way To Create A New Order For The World.

Ideology Is A Specious Way Of Relating To The World. It Offers Human Beings The Illusion Of An Identity, Of Dignity, And Of Morality While Making It Easier For Them To Part With Them.

Human Beings Are Compelled To Live Within A Lie, But They Can Be Compelled To Do So Only Because They Are In Fact Capable Of Living In This Way. Therefore Not Only Does The System Alienate Humanity, But At The Same Time Alienated Humanity Supports This System As Its Own Involuntary Master Plan, As A Degenerate Image Of Its Own Degeneration, As A Record Of People's Own Failure As Individuals.

It Was Never The People Who Complained Of The Universality Of Human Rights, Nor Did The People Consider Human Rights As A Western Or Northern Imposition. It Was Often Their Leaders Who Did So.

You Do Not Become A ''dissident'' Just Because You Decide One Day To Take Up This Most Unusual Career. You Are Thrown Into It By Your Personal Sense Of Responsibility, Combined With A Complex Set Of External Circumstances. You Are Cast Out Of The Existing Structures And Placed In A Position Of Conflict With Them. It Begins As An Attempt To Do Your Work Well, And Ends With Being Branded An Enemy Of Society.

None Of Us Know All The Potentialities That Slumber In The Spirit Of The Population, Or All The Ways In Which That Population Can Surprise Us When There Is The Right Interplay Of Events.

Just As The Constant Increase Of Entropy Is The Basic Law Of The Universe, So It Is The Basic Law Of Life To Be Ever More Highly Structured And To Struggle Against Entropy.

Life Cannot Be Destroyed For Good, Neithercan History Be Brought Entirely To A Halt. A Secret Streamlet Trickles On Beneath The Heavy Lid Of Inertia And Pseudo-events, Slowly And Inconspicuously Undercutting It. It May Be A Long Process, But One Day It Must Happen: The Lid Will No Longer Hold And Will Start To Crack. This Is The Moment When Something Once More Begins Visibly To Happen, Something Truly New And Uniquesomething Truly Historical, In The Sense That History Again Demands To Be Heard.

Anyone Who Takes Himself Too Seriously Always Runs The Risk Of Looking Ridiculous; Anyone Who Can Consistently Laugh At Himself Does Not.
