Sometimes, Whether A Desire Is Excessive Or Negative Depends On The Circumstances Or Society In Which You Live In.

In Our Concern For Others, We Worry Less About Ourselves. When We Worry Less About Ourselves An Experience Of Our Own Suffering Is Less Intense. What Does This Tell Us? Firstly, Because Our Every Action Has A Universal Dimension, A Potential Impact On Others' Happiness, Ethics Are Necessary As A Means To Ensure That We Do Not Harm Others. Secondly, It Tells Us That Genuine Happiness Consists In Those Spiritual Qualities Of Love, Compassion, Patience, Tolerance And Forgiveness And So On. For It Is These Which Provide Both For Our Happiness And Others' Happiness.

The Best Way Of Fulfilling Your Own Interest Is To Take Care Of Others.

Meditation Is Valuable For All Of Humanity Because It Involves Looking Inward. People Don't Have To Be Religious To Look Inside Themselves More Carefully. It Is Constructive And Worthwhile To Analyze Our Emotions, Including Compassion And Our Sense Of Caring, So That We Can Become More Calm And Happy.

Peace, In The Sense Of The Absence Of War, Is Of Little Value To Someone Who Is Dying Of Hunger Or Cold. It Will Not Remove The Pain Of Torture Inflicted On A Prisoner Of Conscience. It Does Not Comfort Those Who Have Lost Their Loved Ones In Floods Caused By Senseless Deforestation In A Neighboring Country. Peace Can Only Last Where Human Rights Are Respected, Where The People Are Fed, And Where Individuals And Nations Are Free.

I Remain Convinced That Most Human Conflicts Can Be Solved Through Genuine Dialogue Conducted With A Spirit Of Openness And Reconciliation.

Like Anyone Else, I Too Have The Potential For Violence; I Too Have Anger In Me. However, I Try To Recall That Anger Is A Destructive Emotion. I Remind Myself That Scientists Now Say That Anger Is Bad For Our Health; It Eats Into Our Immune System. So, Anger Destroys Our Peace Of Mind And Our Physical Health. We Shouldn’t Welcome It Or Think Of It As Natural Or As A Friend.

Cultivating Inner Discipline Is Something That Takes Time; Expecting Rapid Results Is Simply A Sign Of Impatience.

Consciousness Will Always Be Present, Though A Particular Consciousness May Cease. For Example, The Particular Tactile Consciousness That Is Present Within This Human Body Will Cease When The Body Comes To An End. Likewise, Consciousnesses That Are Influenced By Ignorance, By Anger Or By Attachment, These Too Will Cease. But The Basic, Ultimate, Innermost Subtle Consciousness Will Always Remain. It Has No Beginning, And It Will Have Not End.

Physical Comforts Cannot Subdue Mental Suffering, And If We Look Closely, We Can See That Those Who Have Many Possessions Are Not Necessarily Happy. In Fact, Being Wealthy Often Brings Even More Anxiety.

Inner Disarmament, External Disarmament; These Must Go Together, You See. Peace Is Not Just Mere Absence Of Violence - Genuine Peace Must Start In Each Individual Heart.

A Human Being Isn't Meant To Be Some Kind Of Machine Designed Only For Production. No. Human Life Isn't Just For Work.

These Days, In Our Materialistic Culture, Many People Are Led To Believe That Money Is The Ultimate Source Of Happiness. Consequently, When They Don’t Have Enough Of It They Feel Let Down. Therefore, It Is Important To Let People Know That They Have The Source Of Contentment And Happiness Within Themselves, And That It Is Related To Nurturing Our Natural Inner Values.

While It Is All Very Well To Distinguish Happiness That Is Transient From That Which Is Lasting, Between Ephemeral And Genuine Happiness, The Only Happiness It Is Meaningful To Speak Of When A Person Is Dying From Thirst Is Access To Water.

The Two Most Important Things To Remember In Business Are: To Be Aware Of The Consequential Impact On Ecology, And A Caring Relationship Between Employer And Employee.

When You Realize You've Made A Mistake, Take Immediate Steps To Correct It.

There Are Two Kinds Of Happiness - The Temporary Pleasure Derived Primarily From Material Comfort Alone And Another More Enduring Comfort That Results From The Thorough Transformation And Development Of The Mind. I Have Observed That Religious Practice Is Not A Precondition Either Of Ethical Conduct Or Of Happiness Itself. I Have Also Suggested That, Whether A Person Practices Religion Or Not, The Spiritual Qualities Of Love And Compassion, Patience, Tolerance, Forgiveness, Humility And So On Are Indispensable.

Like The Lotus Which Thrives In Mud, The Potential For Realization Grows In The Rich Soil Of Everyday Life

The Ultimate Source Of A Happy Life Is Warm-heartedness. This Means Extending To Others The Kind Of Concern We Have For Ourselves. On A Simple Level We Find That If We Have A Compassionate Heart We Naturally Have More Friends. And Scientists Today Are Discovering That While Anger And Hatred Eat Into Our Immune System, Warm-heartedness And Compassion Are Good For Our Health.

We All Have The Potential To Show Others Love And Affection, But As We Progress In Our Materialistic World, These Values Tend To Remain Dormant. We Can Develop Them On The Basis Of Common Sense, Common Experience And Scientific Findings. The Response To The Recent Tragedy In The Philippines Is An Example Of How Such Values Are Awakened; People Helped Simply Because Others Are Suffering And In Need Of Support.

Whether One Believes In A Religion Or Not, And Whether One Believes In Rebirth Or Not, There Isn't Anyone Who Doesn't Appreciate Kindness And Compassion.

It Is Important Not To Allow Ourselves To Be Put Off By The Magnitude Of Others' Suffering. The Misery Of Millions Is Not A Cause For Pity. Rather It Is A Cause For Compassion.

The Essence Of All Religions Is Love, Compassion, And Tolerance. Kindness Is My True Religion. The Clear Proof Of A Person's Love Of God Is If That Person Genuinely Shows Love To Fellow Human Beings.

We Humans Have Existed In Our Present Form For About A Hundred Thousand Years. I Believe That If During This Time The Human Mind Had Been Primarily Controlled By Anger And Hatred, Our Overall Population Would Have Decreased. But Today, Despite All Our Wars, We Find That The Human Population Is Greater Than Ever. This Clearly Indicates To Me That Love And Compassion Predominate In The World. And This Is Why Unpleasant Events Are "news"; Compassionate Activities Are So Much A Part Of Daily Life That They Are Taken For Granted And , Therefore, Largely Ignored.

Religion Does Not Mean Just Precepts, A Temple, Monastery, Or Other External Signs, For These As Well As Hearing And Thinking Are Subsidiary Factors In Taming The Mind.

Once You Develop Confidence In Your Own Ability, You'll Be Able To Make A Real Contribution To Creating A Better World. Self-confidence Is Very Important. Not In The Sense Of Blind Pride, But As A Realistic Awareness Of What You Can Do. As Human Beings We Can Transform Ourselves By Our Good Qualities And Reducing Our Faults. Our Intelligence Enables Us To Judge What Is Good From What Is Harmful.

True Compassion Is Not Just An Emotional Response, But A Firm Commitment Founded On Reason. Therefore, A Truly Compassionate Attitude Toward Others Does Not Change, Even If They Behave Negatively. Through Universal Altruism, You Develop A Feeling Of Responsibility For Others: The Wish To Help Them Actively Overcome Their Problems.

The Peace Of Mind, Is Very Essential For Our Health. So In That Level, I Think Scientific Finding, Immense Benefit To Get Our Wellness And Eventually Conviction, Peace Of Mind Is Not Just A Luxurious Item, But Peace Of Mind Is Actually Very Important For Our Survival, For Our Healthy Survival.

Peace Does Not Mean An Absence Of Conflicts; Differences Will Always Be There. Peace Means Solving These Differences Through Peaceful Means; Through Dialogue, Education, Knowledge; And Through Humane Ways.

The Mind Must Be Developed By You Alone. There Is No Way For Others To Do The Work And For You To Reap The Results. Reading Someone Else's Blueprint Of Mental Progress Will Not Transfer Its Realizations To You. You Have To Develop Them Yourself.

Historically, The East Was More Concerned With Understanding The Mind And The West Was More Involved In Understanding Matter.

Spend 5 Minutes At The Beginning Of Each Day Remembering We All Want The Same Things (to Be Happy And Be Loved) And We Are All Connected To One Another.

Basically, From The Viewpoint Of Real Human Value We Are All The Same.

Some People Automatically Associate Morality And Altruism With A Religious Vision Of The World. But I Believe It Is A Mistake To Think That Morality Is An Attribute Only Of Religion. We Can Imagine Two Types Of Spirituality: One Tied To Religion, While The Other Arises Spontaneously In The Human Heart As An Expression Of Love For Our Neighbors And A Desire To Do Them Good.

Try To Improve. Don't Expect Too Much, But Don't Feel Discouraged Either; Keep Up Your Enthusiasm; You Will Make Progress.

World Economies Are Always So Tenuous And We Are Subject To So Many Losses In Life, But A Compassionate Attitude Is Something We Can Always Carry With Us.

As Human Beings We Each Have A Responsibility To Care For Humanity. Expressing Concern For Others Brings Inner Strength And Deep Satisfaction. As Social Animals, Human Beings Need Friendship, But Friendship Doesn't Come From Wealth And Power, But From Showing Compassion And Concern For Others.

If We Can Manage To Refrain From Harming Others In Our Everyday Actions And Words, We Can Start To Give More Serious Attention To Actively Doing Good, And This Can Be A Source Of Great Joy And Inner Confidence. We Can Benefit Others Through Our Actions By Being Warm And Generous Toward Them, By Being Charitable, And By Helping Those In Need.

The Key Point Is Kindness. With Kindness One Will Have Inner Peace. Through Inner Peace, World Peace Can One Day Be A Reality.

The More You Think About Your Own Self, The More Self-centred You Are, The More Trouble Even Small Problems Can Create In Your Mind. The Stronger Your Sense Of 'i', The Narrower The Scope Of Your Thinking Becomes; Then Even Small Obstacles Become Unbearable. On The Other Hand, If You Concern Yourself Mainly With Others, The Broader Your Thinking Becomes, And Life's Inevitable Difficulties Disturb You Less.

Change Only Takes Place Through Action, Not Through Meditation And Prayer.

I Don't Think Generally Politician Come From Democratic Country. I Think Not That Thinking. But Sometimes Little Bit Short-sighted. They Are Mainly Looking For Their Next Vote.

Just As We Take For Granted The Need To Acquire Proficiency In The Basic Academic Subjects, I Am Hopeful That A Time Will Come When We Can Take It For Granted That Children Will Learn, As Part Of The Curriculum, The Indispensability Of Inner Values: Love, Compassion, Justice, And Forgiveness.

Ultimately, The Reason Why Love And Compassion Bring The Greatest Happiness Is Simply That Our Nature Cherishes Them Above All Else. The Need For Love Lies At The Very Foundation Of Human Existence.

Happiness Doesn't Always Come From A Pursuit. Sometimes It Comes When We Least Expect It.

Just As Ripples Spread Out When A Single Pebble Is Dropped Into Water, The Actions Of Individuals Can Have Far-reaching Effects.

This Is My Simple Religion. There Is No Need For Temples; No Need For Complicated Philosophy. Our Own Brain, Our Own Heart Is Our Temple; The Philosophy Is Kindness.

Cultivating A Close, Warmhearted Feeling For Others Automatically Puts The Mind At Ease. It Helps Remove Whatever Fears Or Insecurities We May Have And Gives Us The Strength To Cope With Any Obstacles We Encounter.

Religion Is Important For Humanity, But It Should Evolve With Humanity. The First Priority Is To Establish And Develop The Principle Of Pluralism In All Religious Traditions. If We, The Religious Leaders, Cultivate A Sincere Pluralistic Attitude, Then Everything Will Be More Simple. It Is Good That Most Religious Leaders Are At Least Beginning To Recognize Other Traditions, Even Though They May Not Approve Of Them. The Next Step Is To Accept That The Idea Of Propagating Religion Is Outdated. It No Longer Suits The Times.

If A Problem Is Fixable, If A Situation Is Such That You Can Do Something About It, Then There Is No Need To Worry. If It's Not Fixable, Then There Is No Help In Worrying. There Is No Benefit In Worrying Whatsoever.

Nonviolence Is The Only Way. Even If You Achieve Your Goal By Violent Means There Are Always Side Effects, And These Can Be Worse Than The Problem. Violence Is Against Human Nature.

When Our Mind Is Calm, We’re Better Able To Find Peace Of Mind And Live A Joyful Life.

Since We Became Buddhist, We Have Lived In Peace With Them. We Did Not Invade Them. We Did Not Want Them To Invade Us. We Have Never Declared War On China.

Just As Compassion Is The Wish That All Sentient Beings Be Free Of Suffering, Loving-kindness Is The Wish That All May Enjoy Happiness.

Whether We Like It Or Not, We Have All Been Born Into This World As Part Of One Great Human Family. Rich Or Poor, Educated Or Uneducated, Belonging To One Nation Or Another, To One Religion Or Another, Adhering To This Ideology Or That, Ultimately Each Of Is Just A Human Being Like Everyone Else. We All Desire Happiness And Do Not Want Suffering.

When We Consider Reality Itself We Quickly Become Aware Of Its Infinite Complexity, And We Realize That Our Habitual Perception Of It Is Often Inadequate. If This Were Not So, The Concept Of Deception Would Be Meaningless.

‎in Today's Materialistic World There Is A Risk Of People Becoming Slaves To Money, As Though They Were Simply Cogs In A Huge Money-making Machine. This Does Nothing For Human Dignity, Freedom, And Genuine Well-being. Wealth Should Serve Humanity, And Not The Other Way Around.

I Really Do Not Want To Carry Some Kind Of Party Function.

As Far As Ignorance Is Concerned, Not Just Buddhism, Every Religion Recognizes It As The Source Of Suffering.

Peace Starts Within Each One Of Us. When We Have Inner Peace, We Can Be At Peace With Those Around Us.

If Each Of Us Can Learn To Relate To Each Other More Out Of Compassion, With A Sense Of Connection To Each Other And A Deep Recognition Of Our Common Humanity, And More Important, To Teach This To Our Children, I Believe That This Can Go A Long Way In Reducing Many Of The Conflicts And Problems That We See Today.

Whatever Forms Of Meditation You Practice, The Most Important Point Is To Apply Mindfulness Continuously, And Make A Sustained Effort. It Is Unrealistic To Expect Results From Meditation Within A Short Period Of Time. What Is Required Is Continuous Sustained Effort.

In Order To Carry A Positive Action We Must Develop Here A Positive Vision.

You're Happy When You Help Others Become Happy.

You Are The People Who Are Shaping A Better World. One Of The Secrets Of Inner Peace Is The Practice Of Compassion.

Encountering Sufferings Will Definitely Contribute To The Elevation Of Your Spiritual Practice, Provided You Are Able To Transform Calamity And Misfortune Into The Path.

One Mongolian Leader Became A Very, Very Brutal Dictator And Eventually Became A Murderer. Previously, He Was A Monk, And Then He Became A Revolutionary. Under The Influence Of His New Ideology, He Actually Killed His Own Teacher. Pol Pot's Family Background Was Buddhist. Whether He Himself Was A Buddhist At A Young Age, I Don't Know. Even Chairman Mao's Family Background Was Buddhist. So One Day, If The Dalai Lama Becomes A Mass Murderer, He Will Become The Most Deadly Of Mass Murderers.

Yes. That's Wise Selfish,' He Replied. 'helping Others Not Means We Do This At Our Own Expense. Not Like This. Buddhas And Bodhisattvas, These People Very Wise. All Their Lives They Only Want One Thing: To Achieve Ultimate Happiness. How To Do This? By Cultivating Compassion, By Cultivating Altruism.

It Is Our Custom To Say That Someone Is 'lucky' Or 'unlucky' If They Meet With Fortunate Or Unfortunate Circumstances, Respectively. It Is, However, Too Simplistic To Think In Terms Of Random 'luck.' Even From A Scientific Point Of View, This Is Not A Sufficient Explanation.

To Foster Inner Awareness, Introspection, And Reasoning Is More Efficient Than Meditation And Prayer.

We Have Never Declared War On China. We Have Only Asked Them To Leave Us In Peace, To Let Us Have Our Natural Freedom.

In Today’s Interconnected And Globalized World, It Is Now Commonplace For People Of Dissimilar World Views, Faiths And Races To Live Side By Side. It Is A Matter Of Great Urgency, Therefore, That We Find Ways To Cooperate With One Another In A Spirit Of Mutual Acceptance And Respect.

To Be Aware Of A Single Shortcoming Within Oneself Is More Useful Than To Be Aware Of A Thousand In Somebody Else. Rather Than Speaking Badly About People And In Ways That Will Produce Friction And Unrest In Their Lives, We Should Practice A Purer Perception Of Them, And When We Speak Of Others, Speak Of Their Good Qualities.

Reality Is Devoid Of Any Intrinsic Identity That Can Be Captured By Any One Single Proposition - That Is What Buddha Meant By "voidness."
