And Doth Not The Gradual Condensation Of This Medium Extend To Some Distance From The Bodies, And Thereby Cause The Inflexions Of The Rays Of Light, Which Pass By The Edges Of Dense Bodies, At Some Distance From The Bodies?

One [method] Is By A Watch To Keep Time Exactly. But, By Reason Of The Motion Of The Ship, The Variation Of Heat And Cold, Wet And Dry, And The Difference Of Gravity In Different Latitudes, Such A Watch Hath Not Yet Been Made.

God Is Able To Create Particles Of Matter Of Several Sizes And Figures And Perhaps Of Different Densities And Forces, And Thereby To Vary The Laws Of Nature, And Make Worlds Of Several Sorts In Several Parts Of The Universe.

No Sciences Are Better Attested Than The Religion Of The Bible.

A Man May Imagine Things That Are False, But He Can Only Understand Things That Are True, For If The Things Be False, The Apprehension Of Them Is Not Understanding.

Now The Smallest Particles Of Matter May Cohere By The Strongest Attractions, And Compose Bigger Particles Of Weaker Virture.... By Such Deductions The Law Of Gravitation Is Rendered Probable, That Every Particle Attracts Every Other Particle With A Force Which Varies Inversely As The Square Of The Distance. The Law Thus Suggested Is Assumed To Be Universally True.

Our Present Work Sets Forth Mathematical Principles Of Philosophy. For The Basic Problem Of Philosophy Seems To Be To Discover The Forces Of Nature From The Phenomena Of Motions And Then To Demonstrate The Other Phenomena From These Forces. It Is To These Ends That The General Propositions In Books 1 And 2 Are Directed, While In Book 3 Our Explanation Of The System Of The World Illustrates These Propositions.
