I Cannot Be A Teacher Without Exposing Who I Am.

It Is Truly Difficult To Make A Democracy. Democracy, Like Arty Dream, Is Not Made With Spiritual Words But With Reflection And Practice. It Is Not What I Say That Says I Am A Democrat, That I Am Not Racist Or Machista But What I Do. What I Say Must Not Be Contradicted By What I Do. It Is What I Do That Bespeaks My Faithfulness Or Not To What I Say.

No One Can Be Authentically Human While He Prevents Others From Being So.

No One Can Learn Tolerance In A Climate Of Irresponsibility, Which Does Not Produce Democracy. The Act Of Tolerating Requires A Climate In Which Limits May Be Established, In Which There Are Principles To Be Respected. That Is Why Tolerance Is Not Coexistence With The Intolerable. Under An Authoritarian Regime, In Which Authority Is Abused, Or A Permissive One, In Which Freedom Is Not Limited, One Can Hardly Learn Tolerance. Tolerance Requires Respect, Discipline, And Ethics.

Teachers And Students (leadership And People), Co-intent On Reality, Are Both Subjects, Not Only In The Task Of Unveiling That Reality, And Thereby Coming To Know It Critically, But In The Task Of Re-creating That Knowledge. As They Attain This Knowledge Of Reality Through Common Reflection And Action, They Discover Themselves As Its Permanent Re-creators.

In Order For The Oppressed To Be Able To Wage The Struggle For Their Liberation, They Must Perceive The Reality Of Oppression Not As A Closed World From Which There Is No Exit , But As A Limiting Situation Which They Can Transform.

It's Really Not Possible For Someone To Imagine Himself/herself As A Subject In The Process Of Becoming Without Having At The Same Time A Disposition For Change. And Change Of Which She/he Is Not Merely The Victim But The Subject.

It Is Not Possible To Remake This Country, To Democratize It, Humanize It, Make It Serious, As Long As We Have Teenagers Killing People For Play And Offending Life, Destroying The Dream, And Making Love Unviable. If Education Alone Cannot Transform Society, Without It Society Cannot Change Either.

The Oppressors Develop A Series Of Methods Precluding Any Presentation Of The World As A Problem And Showing It Rather As A Fixed Entity, As Something Given--something To Which People, As Mere Spectators, Must Adapt.

The More People Participate In The Process Of Their Own Education, And The More People Participate In Defining What Kind Of Production To Produce, And For What And Why, The More People Participate In The Development Of Their Selves. The More People Become Themselves, The Better The Democracy.

In Order For This Struggle To Have Meaning, The Oppressed Must Not, In Seeking To Regain Their Humanity (which Is A Way To Create It), Become In Turn Oppressors Of The Oppressors, But Rather Restorers Of The Humanity Of Both

With The Establishment Of A Relationship Of Oppression, Violence Has Already Begun. Never In History Has Violence Been Initiated By The Oppressed. How Could They Be The Initiators, If They Themselves Are The Result Of Violence? How Could They Be The Sponsors Of Something Objective Whose Objective Inauguration Called Forth Their Existence As Oppressed? There Would Be No Oppressed Had There Been No Prior Of Violence To Establish Their Subjugation.

The Oppressors Do Not Favor Promoting The Community As A Whole, But Rather Selected Leaders.

Submission To Suffering Is A Form Of Annihilation, But Transformation Of Suffering Rekindles A Faith That Gives Life.

Critical Reflection On Practice Is A Requirement Of The Relationship Between Theory And Practice. Otherwise Theory Becomes Simply "blah, Blah, Blah, " And Practice, Pure Activism.

Education Either Functions As An Instrument Which Is Used To Facilitate Integration Of The Younger Generation Into The Logic Of The Present System And Bring About Conformity Or It Becomes The Practice Of Freedom, The Means By Which Men And Women Deal Critically And Creatively With Reality And Discover How To Participate In The Transformation Of Their World.

The Greatest Humanistic And Historical Task Of The Oppressed: To Liberate Themselves.

Transformation Is Only Valid If It Is Carried Out With The People, Not For Them. Liberation Is Like A Childbirth, And A Painful One. The Person Who Emerges Is A New Person: No Longer Either Oppressor Or Oppressed, But A Person In The Process Of Achieving Freedom. It Is Only The Oppressed Who, By Freeing Themselves, Can Free Their Oppressors.

This Book Will Present Some Aspects Of What The Writer Has Termed The Pedagogy Of The Oppressed, A Pedagogy Which Must Be Forged With, Not For, The Oppressed (whether Individuals Or Peoples) In The Incessant Struggle To Regain Their Humanity.

For People, 'here' Signifies Not Merely A Physical Space, But Also An Historical Space.

Language Is Never Neutral

If I Am A Pure Product Of Genetic, Cultural, Or Class Determination, I Have No Responsibility For My Action In The World And, Therefore, It Is Not Possible For Me To Speak Of Ethics. Some May Think That To Affirm Dialogue—the Encounter Of Women And Men In The World In Order To Transform The World—is Naively And Subjectively Idealistic. There Is Nothing, However, More Real Or Concrete Than People In The World And With The World, Than Humans With Other Humans.

The Object Of A Dialogical-liberterian Action Is Not To 'dislodge' The Oppressed From A Mythological Reality In Order To 'bind' Them To Another Reality. Whether The Teacher Is Authoritarian, Undisciplined, Competent, Incompetent, Serious, Irresponsible, Involved, A Lover Of People And Of Life, Cold, Angry With The World, Bureaucratic, Excessively Rational, Or Whatever Else, He/she Will Not Pass Through The Classroom Without Leaving His Or Her Mark On The Students.

No One Is Born Fully-formed: It Is Through Self-experience In The World That We Become What We Are.

What If We Discover That Our Present Way Of Life Is Irreconcilable With Our Vocation To Become Fully Human?

This Capacity To Go Beyond The Factors Of Conditioning Is One Of The Obvious Advantages Of The Human Person.

No Matter How Much Someone May Irritate Me, I Have No Right To Puff Myself Up With My Own Self-importance So As To Declare That Person To Be Absolutely Incompetent, Assuming A Posture Of Disdain From My Own Position Of False Superiority.

It Doesnt Hurt To Repeat Here The Statement, Still Rejected By Many People In Spite Of Its Obviousness, That Education Is A Political Act.

But Almost Always, During The Initial Stage Of The Struggle, The Oppressed, Instead Of Striving For Liberation, Tend Themselves To Become Oppressors, Or Sub Oppressors. No Pedagogy Which Is Truly Liberating Can Remain Distant From The Oppressed By Treating Them As Unfortunates And By Presenting For Their Emulation Models From Among The Oppressors. The Oppressed Must Be Their Own Example In The Struggle For Their Redemption (freire, 1970, P. 54).

The Unfinished Character Of Human Beings And The Transformational Character Of Reality Necessitate That Education Be An Ongoing Activity.

Reflection And Action Must Never Be Undertaken Independently.

No Reality Transforms Itself.

Dialogue Cannot Exist Without Humility.

One Cannot Expect Positive Results From An Educational Or Political Action Program Which Fails To Respect The Particular View Of The World Held By The People. Such A Program Constitutes Cultural Invasion, Good Intentions Notwithstanding.

To Simply Think About The People, As The Dominators Do, Without Any Self-giving In That Thought, To Fail To Think With The People, Is A Sure Way To Cease Being Revolutionary Leaders.
