Education Means Emancipation. It Means Light And Liberty. It Means The Uplifting Of The Soul Of Man Into The Glorious Light Of Truth, The Light By Which Men Can Only Be Made Free.

To Suppress Free Speech Is A Double Wrong. It Violates The Rights Of The Hearer As Well As Those Of The Speaker.

I Prayed For Twenty Years But Received No Answer Until I Prayed With My Legs.

From The First I Saw No Chance Of Bettering The Condition Of The Freedman Until He Should Cease To Be Merely A Freedman And Should Become A Citizen.

I Have One Great Political Idea... That Idea Is An Old One. It Is Widely And Generally Assented To; Nevertheless, It Is Very Generally Trampled Upon And Disregarded. The Best Expression Of It, I Have Found In The Bible. It Is In Substance, "righteousness Exalteth A Nation - Sin Is A Reproach To Any People." There Are At The Present Moment Many Colored Men In The Confederate Army Doing Duty Not Only As Cooks, Servants And Laborers , But As Real Soldiers, Having Muskets On Their Shoulders, And Bullets In Their Pockets, Ready To Shoot Down Loyal Troops, And Do All That Soldiers May To Destroy The Federal Government And Build Up That Of The Traitors And Rebels.
