Let Me Give You A Word Of The Philosophy Of Reform. The Whole History Of The Progress Of Human Liberty Shows That All Concessions Yet Made To Her August Claims, Have Been Born Of Earnest Struggle. The Conflict Has Been Exciting, Agitating, All-absorbing, And For The Time Being, Putting All Other Tumults To Silence. It Must Do This Or It Does Nothing. For Of All Slaveholders With Whom I Have Ever Met, Religious Slaveholders Are The Worst. I Have Ever Found Them The Meanest And Basest, The Most Cruel And Cowardly, Of All Others.

The Silver Trump Of Freedom Had Roused My Soul To Eternal Wakefulness. Freedom Now Appeared, To Disappear No More Forever. It Was Heard In Every Sound, And Seen In Every Thing.

The Constitution Is A Glorious Liberty Document. Read Its Preamble, Consider It Purposes. Is Slavery Among Them? Is It At The Gateway? Or Is It In The Temple? It Is Neither.

E Have Men Sold To Build Churches, Women Sold To Support The Gospel, And Babes Sold To Purchase Bibles For The Poor Heathen, All For The Glory Of God And The Good Of Souls. The Slave Auctioneer's Bell And The Church-going Bell Chime In With Each Other, And The Bitter Cries Of The Heart-broken Slave Are Drowned In The Religious Shouts Of His Pious Master. Revivals Of Religion And Revivals In The Slave Trade Go Hand In Hand.

Those Who Profess To Favor Freedom, And Yet Depreciate Agitation, Are Men Who Want Crops Without Plowing Up The Ground.

I Know Of No Rights Of Race Superior To The Rights Of Humanity...

Intelligence Is A Great Leveler Here As Elsewhere

If There's No Struggle, There's No Progress.

I Have Observed This In My Experience Of Slavery, That Whenever My Condition Was Improved, Instead Of Increasing My Contentment; It Only Increased My Desire To Be Free, And Set Me Thinking Of Plans To Gain My Freedom.

Mr. Lincoln Was Not Only A Great President, But A Great Man - Too Great To Be Small In Anything. In His Company I Was Never In Any Way Reminded Of My Humble Origin, Or Of My Unpopular Color.

Find Out Just What Any People Will Quietly Submit To And You Have Found Out The Exact Measure Of Injustice And Wrong Which Will Be Imposed Upon Them, And These Will Continue Till They Are Resisted With Either Words Or Blows, Or With Both.

To Make A Contented Slave It Is Necessary To Make A Thoughtless One. It Is Necessary To Darken The Moral And Mental Vision And, As Far As Possible, To Annihilate The Power Of Reason.

I Do Not Think Much Of The Good Luck Theory Of Self-made Men. It Is Worth But Little Attention And Has No Practical Value.

The More Men You Make Free, The More Freedom Is Strengthened, And The More Men You Give An Interest In The Welfare And Safety Of The State, The Greater Is The Security Of The State.

I Love The Religion Of Christianity - Which Cometh From Above - Which Is A Pure, Peaceable, Gentle, Easy To Be Entreated, Full Of Good Fruits, And Without Hypocrisy.

A Man, At Times, Gets Something For Nothing, But It Will, In His Hands, Amount To Nothing.

Now, Take The Constitution According To Its Plain Reading, And I Defy The Presentation Of A Single Pro-slavery Clause In It. On The Other Hand It Will Be Found To Contain Principles And Purposes, Entirely Hostile To The Existence Of Slavery.

If There Is No Struggle, There Is No Progress.

What Is Possible For Me Is Possible For You.

For It Is Not Light That Is Needed, But Fire; It Is Not The Gentle Shower, But Thunder. We Need The Storm, The Whirlwind, And The Earthquake. The Feeling In The Nation Must Be Quickened, The Conscience Of The Nation Must Be Roused, The Propriety Of The Nation Must Be Startled, The Hypocrisy Of The Nation Must Be Exposed: And Its Crimes Against God And Man Must Be Denounced.

One And God Make A Majority.

The Thing Worse Than Rebellion Is The Thing That Causes Rebellion.

The Destiny Of The Colored American ... Is The Destiny Of America.

The 4th Of July Is The First Great Fact In Your Nation's History — The Very Ring-bolt In The Chain Of Your Yet Undeveloped Destiny. Pride And Patriotism, Not Less Than Gratitude, Prompt You To Celebrate And To Hold It In Perpetual Remembrance. I Have Said That The Declaration Of Independence Is The Ring-bolt To The Chain Of Your Nation's Destiny; So, Indeed, I Regard It. The Principles Contained In That Instrument Are Saving Principles. Stand By Those Principles, Be True To Them On All Occasions, In All Places, Against All Foes, And At Whatever Cost.

I Have Observed This In My Experience Of Slavery, - That Whenever My Condition Was Improved, Instead Of Its Increasing My Contentment, It Only Increased My Desire To Be Free, And Set Me To Thinking Of Plans To Gain My Freedom. I Have Found That, To Make A Contented Slave, It Is Necessary To Make A Thoughtless One. No People To Whom Liberty Is Given Can Hold It As Firmly And Wear It As Grandly As Those Who Wrench Their Liberty From The Iron Hand Of The Tyrant.

In Regard To The Colored People, There Is Always More That Is Benevolent, I Perceive, Than Just, Manifested Towards Us. What I Ask For The Negro Is Not Benevolence, Not Pity, Not Sympathy, But Simply Justice.

Going To Live At Baltimore Laid The Foundation, And Opened The Gateway, To All My Subsequent Prosperity.

To Drag A Man In Fetters Into The Grand Illuminated Temple Of Liberty, And Call Upon Him To Join You In Joyous Anthems, Were Inhuman Mockery And Sacrilegious Irony.

Poverty, Ignorance And Degradation Are The Combined Evils, These Constitute The Social Disease Of The Free Colored People Of The Us.

We Have To Do With The Past Only As We Can Make It Useful To The Present And The Future.

I Have Often Sung To Drown My Sorrow, But Seldom To Express My Happiness. Crying For Joy, And Singing For Joy, Were Alike Uncommon To Me While In The Jaws Of Slavery. The Singing Of A Man Cast Away Upon A Desolate Island Might Be As Appropriately Considered As Evidence Of Contentment And Happiness, As The Singing Of A Slave; The Songs Of The One And Of The Other Are Prompted By The Same Emotion.

Viewing The Man From The Genuine Abolitionist Ground, Mr. Lincoln Seemed Cold, Tardy, Weak And Unequal To The Task.
