There Are A Number Of Things Wrong With Washington. One Of Them Is That Everyone Is Too Far From Home.

To Blend, Without Coercion, The Individual Good And The Common Good Is The Essence Of Citizenship In A Free Country.

I Like To Believe That People In The Long Run Are Going To Do More To Promote Peace Than Our Governments. Indeed, I Think That People Want Peace So Much That One Of These Days Governments Had Better Get Out Of The Way And Let Them Have It.

Some Years Ago I Became President Of Columbia University And Learned Within 24 Hours To Be Ready To Speak At The Drop Of A Hat, And I Learned Something More, The Trustees Were Expected To Be Ready To Speak At The Passing Of The Hat.

Any Nations Right To A Form Of Government And Economic System Of Its Own Choosing Is Inalienable. Any Nations Attempt To Dictate To Other Nations Their Form Of Government Is Indefensible.

The World Moves, And Ideas That Were Once Good Are Not Always Good.

I Had Been Conscious A Feeling Of Depression And So I Voiced To [secretary Of War Stimson] My Grave Misgivings, First On The Basis Of My Belief That Japan Was Already Defeated And That Dropping The Bomb Was Completely Unnecessary, And Secondly Because I Thought That Our Country Should Avoid Shocking World Opinion By The Use Of A Weapon Whose Employment Was, I Thought, No Longer Mandatory As A Measure To Save American Lives. It Was My Belief That Japan Was, At This Very Moment, Seeking A Way To Surrender With A Minimum Loss Of 'face.'

I Think Of Going Back To The Sports Field Again, And Let's Take A Baseball Game. Well, You Have Cracked Out A Grounder And You Put In Your Last Ounce Of Energy And You Just Happen To Make First Base. But You Don't Stop There. First Base Is The Beginning. Without A Doubt, Psychological Warfare Has Proven Its Right To A Place Of Dignity In Our Military Arsenal.

The United States Strongly Seeks A Lasting Agreement For The Discontinuance Of Nuclear Weapons Tests. We Believe That This Would Be An Important Step Toward Reduction Of International Tensions And Would Open The Way To Further Agreement On Substantial Measures Of Disarmament.

We Do Not Keep Security Establishments Merely To Defend Property Or Territory Or Rights Abroad Or At Sea. We Keep The Security Forces To Defend A Way Of Life.
