Because I Had Some Roles That Resonated With Women, I Immediately Noticed That There Were Far More Male Characters Than Female Characters In What We're Showing Little Kids In The 21st Century, Which Was Stunning To Me. But I Couldn't Find Anybody Else Who Noticed.

The Creators Of Kids' Media Had No Idea They Were Leaving Out That Many Female Characters. They Were In Utter Shock That The Worlds They Were Creating Were So Bereft Of Female Presences.

We Need More Female Directors, We Also Need Men To Step Up And Identify With Female Characters And Stories About Women. We Don't Want To Create A Ghetto Where Women Have To Do Movies About Women. To Assume Stories About Women Need To Be Told By A Woman Isn't Necessarily True, Just As Stories About Men Don't Need A Male Director.

I Would Say How Important It Is That We Stop Teaching Kids, From The Beginning, That Boys Are More Important Than Girls. It's The 21st Century, You Know, Let's Go Here. We Have To Show Kids That Boys And Girls Share The Sandbox Equally And Do Equally Interesting Things. We're Teaching Kids Something That We Have To Try To Get Rid Of Later On. Why Not Just Stop Filling Them With Unconscious Gender Bias?

I Played This Character Twice In Live Action, And Now I've Become An Animated Character. It Was Actually Fun To See Myself Drawn - I've Never Been A Drawn Character Before.

When I Started Watching Breaking Bad, I Binge-watched It. I Thought It Was So Good That I Started To Cry. It's The Only Time In My Life I've Been Completely Jealous, The Only Time. This Is Really Funny, But We Did A Study Of The Occupations Of Female Characters On Tv, And There Are So Many Female Forensic Scientists On Tv Because Of All The Csi Shows And Bones And Whatever. I Don't Have To Lobby Anybody To Add More Female Forensic Scientists As Role Models. There's Plenty.in Real Life, The People Going Into That Field Now Are Something Like Two-thirds Women.

It's Really As Simple As Showing Women Being In Charge Of Their Destiny And Giving Female Characters A Voice.

It's Okay If It Takes Two Or Three Years For Something Really Good To Come Along, But I Don't Want To Wait Ten Years For Something Great To Come Along.

Once I Fix What Kids Watch, I'll Be Moving On To Everything Else.

When It Came Time For College, I Told My Parents I Was Going To Major In Acting. And They Were So Removed From Anything To Do With Show Business - My Dad Built Our House And My Mom Grew Our Food.

The Film Festival Is In A Town In Arkansas, A Quintessentially American Town With A Little Town Square. It's To Champion Women And Diversity In All Media, So Tv, Movies, Eventually, Digital, Whatever You Get Into. That's The Goal. We're Using The Same Philosophy As My Institute, Which Is To Make It Research-based And Really Try To Work Directly With Filmmakers And Content Creators And Move The Needle. It's The Only Film Festival In The World Where The Prizes Are Guaranteed Distribution.

I Always Want A Challenge. My Whole Career Has Been Based On Trying To Avoid Female Characters That Don't Get To Do Anything. And It's Really Hard To Avoid Those.

It's Really Important For Boys To See That Girls Take Up Half Of The Planet - Which We Do.

All I Wanted, To Be Petite And Attractive. I Was Afraid I'd Never Stop Growing.

For A Long Time, Way Back In The ’30s And ’40s, There Were Fabulous Female Roles. Bette Davis And All Those People Had Incredible, Great Roles. After World War Ii, Something Happened Where It Was Not Only "get Out Of The Factories," But "get Out Of The Movies." That's When Women's Roles Started To Really [change].

She Said She Used To Get Letters From Little Boys Saying, "madam President, Do You Think It Will Ever Be Possible For A Boy To Be President?" Just Like We Assume That Girls Can't Be Politicians, They Were Assuming Boys Can't. That's What They Thought. It's So Crazy.

[my Aunt] Took Me To My First Play, Too, Which Was Dinner Theater. I Don't Know If They Have That In England, But You Eat A Dinner While You Watch A Play. And She Ordered A Glass Of Wine. I Was Like, "oh My God. This Is, Like, The Most Sophisticated Thing I Have Ever Done."

The Only Movies I Saw Till I Was 17 Were Made By Disney. My Parents Had This Thing. Disney Was Like, You Know, "ford Is A Good Car. Disney Makes Good Movies That Are Good For Kids And Safe."

My Knowledge Of Horror Films Is Pathetic Because I Can't Really Watch Them.

On Film, You Can't Do It Over Again. And You Do Have To Stop Shooting At A Certain Point.

Nobody Ever Said, "well If You Want To Be In Movies, You Should Go To L.a." Everybody Else Was Going To New York. So I Went To New York With Them. And Then I Was Like, "how Am I Supposed To Get A Movie?"

My Parents Are Both From Vermont, Very Old-fashioned New England. We Heated Our House With Wood My Father Chopped. My Mom Grew All Of Our Food. We Were Very Underexposed To Everything.

The Only Time I Got The Absolute Most Insanely Nervous In My Life Was At The Olympic Trials, Because Archery Is A Horrible Spectator Sport. Nobody Goes And Watches An Archery Tournament. Because The Targets Are Three-quarters Of A Football Field Away. Who Can Tell Who's Winning? You Can't Even See Your Own Target From Where You Are.

When My Friends And I Would Act Out Movies As Kids, We'd Play The Guys' Roles, Since They Had The Most Interesting Things To Do. Decades Later, I Can Hardly Believe My Sons And Daughter Are Seeing Many Of The Same Limited Choices In Current Films.

My Daughter Was A Toddler. I Had No Idea There Was Anything Wrong With Kids' Media.i Started Watching Little Preschool Shows With Her Or G-rated Videos Or Whatever; I Couldn't Believe What I Was Seeing, That There Seemed To Be Far More Male Characters Than Female Characters In What We Make For Little Kids. It Was Just A Shock.

I Was So Tall In High School That I Was Convinced That I Was Uncoordinated And Not Athletic. I Was Terrified To Play Any Sport At All, No Matter How Hard They Tried To Convince Me To Be On The Girls' Basketball Team As The Tallest Kid In Class.

I Had A Pretty Poor Self-image For A Long Time. I Broke Into Acting As A Model In New York. I Was Never Anything Like A "supermodel," But I Made A Living At It For A Couple Years. The Thing Was, I Was Convinced That I Was Tricking Everyone Into Thinking I Was Attractive.

Women Can Feel Inspired By The Story. People Who Haven't Been Traditionally Given A Chance To Use Their Skills Or Shine Are Given A Chance, And They Prevail.

Archery Is Something That I Took Up Later And Didn't Know I Had A Natural Aptitude For.

Look At The Number Of Cop Shows And Lawyer Shows And Forensics Shows... I Think There Could Be Room For Two Quite Different Examinations Of The Same Political Office.

The More Hours Of Television A Girl Watches, The Fewer Options She Thinks She Has In Life.

So Many Other Countries Have Had Female Leaders, In Fact The U.s. Ranks 61st In Female Representation In Government And I Think It Is Startling And Sign Of A Change That Needs To Be Made.

We All Know The Huge Problem There Is With Entertainment In General Leaving Out Women. Especially As Actors, We Know There Are Fewer Great Parts For Women.

So Many Female Characters Are The Girlfriend Of The Person Having The Adventure. I Want To Play Baseball, I Don't Want To Be The Girlfriend Of The One [who Plays].

The Fictitious Worlds Created For Kids Are Nearly Bereft Of Female Presence. Behind The Cameras, There's A Different Problem, Which I Think Is Not Unconscious Gender Bias. It's Probably Categorized More As Conscious Gender Bias. Because Everybody's Known The Numbers For Decades. Nobody's Stunned To Hear There Are Very Few Female Directors, Only 4 Or 7 Percent. Everybody Knows, But It Doesn't Change Anything. It Doesn't Make People Say, "wow! We Should Change That." Nothing Happens. It's Utterly Stagnant.
