Robert Nozick [a Havard Philosopher, Famous For His Book "anarchy, State And Utopia"] Defined Revenge As Delivering The Message That You Know What Someone Has Done, And It Doesn't Involve Hurting Them Or Doing Anything To Them Beyond That. It's Just Delivering The Message That Their Crime Has Been Noted Not Just By Its Victims, Because The Victim Might Be Dead, But By Another Who Has A Different Moral View And Will Challenge The Perpetrator's View.

Interviews, When They Are Just Simply An Exercise In Hearing What You Want To Hear, Are Of No Interest. And Many, Many, If Not Most Interviews Have That Character. The Interviewer Who Comes In With A List Of Bullet Points They're Going To Address One After The Other. Interviews, Properly Considered, Should Be Investigative. You Should Not Know What You're Going To Hear. You Should Be Surprised.

It's A Kind Of Honour When I See How Many People Are Imitating The Style Of How I Make Films.

Everything Is A Reenactment. We Are Reenacting The World In The Mind. The World Is Not Inside There. It Does Not Reside In The Gray Matter Of The Brain.

Appearing On The Front Page Of The New York Times Even Given The State Of Papers Today Is Still Something That's Seen By A Lot Of People.

[elsa Dorfman]was Well Known. Certainly In The Boston Area, She's Well Known As A Portrait Photographer. My Wife Always Wanted To Meet Her And Then There Was Some Benefit Where She Was Taking Pictures.

I've Always Wondered Where Explanations End And Excuses Begin.

Simply Coming To The Perpetrator And Delivering The Message Is Nozick's Definition Of Revenge. And In That Sense, Adi Is Exacting Revenge. When People Ask, "does Adi Want Revenge?" - They Mean Violent Revenge. But In Nozick's Formulation, It Is Revenge. That Is The Essence Of Revenge.

Basically, "making A Murderer" Chronicles A Set Of Crimes Committed In Wisconsin: Manitowoc, Wisconsin. The First Crime Is A Miscarriage Of Justice. Steven Avery Is Convicted And Sentenced To A Very, Very Long Prison Sentence For The Assault On A Woman. And It Comes To Light Through Dna Evidence That He Was Not The Assailant.

I Gave Someone A Perverse Argument Not So Long Ago About Why Advertising Is Better Than Movies. You Want To Hear It? Movies Operate From A Really Disingenuous Premise, That People Are Heroes. I Know A Lot Of People And Have Had An Opportunity Over The Years To Observe Them. Are They Heroes...? Let's Put It This Way. Advertising Tries Something Simpler And More Believable: Products As Heroes. I Guess The Idea Is: When All Else Fails, Put Your Faith In Conditioner.

There Is Something About The Photographs That Is Endlessly Disturbing. The Fact That We Like To Think Of Them As Torture Actually Hides What Is Really Deeply Offensive About Them.

What's Great About Documentary Genre, It Seems To Me, Is That It Can Be Experimental Filmmaking. You Have A License To Do A Lot Of Diverse Things Under The Umbrella Of "documentary."

I Believe That We Face Incredible Obstacles In Our Attempts To See The World. Everything In Our Nature Tries To Deny The World Around Us; To Refabricate It In Our Own Image; To Reinvent It For Our Own Benefit. And So, It Becomes Something Of A Challenge, A Task, To Recover (or At Least Attempt To Recover) The Real World Despite All The Impediments To That End.

I Like To Think That One Of Things I've Done With Non-fiction Since The Very Beginning Is To Find New Ways Of Telling True Stories.

Finding Truth Involves Some Kind Of Activity. As I Like To Point Out, Truth Isn't Handed To You On A Platter. It's Not Something That You Get At A Cafeteria, Where They Just Put It On Your Plate. It's A Search, A Quest, An Investigation, A Continual Process Of Looking At And Looking For Evidence, Trying To Figure Out What The Evidence Means.

All Alone - Shorn Of Context, Without Captions - A Photograph Is Neither True Nor False.... For Truth, Properly Considered, Is About The Relationship Between Language And The World, Not About Photographs And The World.

There's This Crazy Thinking That Style Guarantees Truth. You Go Out With A Hand-held Camera, Use Available Light, And Somehow The Truth Emerges.

We Falsely Interpret The World Around Us. We Ignore Evidence That Doesn't Support Our Prior Beliefs And We Convince Ourselves We Know Things We Don. We Think We Know Things We Don't Know.

Film Is Lies At Twenty-four Frames A Second.

We Live In A Very Litigious Society. I've Never Sued Anybody. I Certainly Can Imagine A Situation Where I Might Sue, But It Seems More Or Less In Bad Taste.

You Can Talk About A Caption Underneath A Photograph Being True Or False, Because There Is A Linguistic Element. You Can Claim That A Photograph Is A Picture Of A Horse Or A Cow, But It Is The Sentence That Expresses The Claim, Which Is True Or False, Not The Photograph.

It's Really Hard To Know Why Certain Artists Become Famous And Others Don't.

There Are Artists Who Are Very Well Known And Many Of Us Feel They Should Be Less Well Known, While There Are Others Who Aren't Well Known And Many Feel Deserve More Attention.

But There's A Big Difference Between, Say, Reporting On A Story And Simply Making Up A Story.

I'm One Simple Way I Think I've Succeeded Was Capturing Elsa [dorfman]. There's Something About Elsa, Her Personality, And Her Work That I Believe Is There.

The Smarter People I Know Declined To Watch The Most Recent Debate [with Donald Trump].

In The Case Of The Thin Blue Line, I Was Surprised Actually By Many Things. I Was Shooting Down In Texas Where The Actual Killer David Harris Lived And I Interviewed The Town Cop. He Described These Guys As Being David Harris' Partners In Crime And Even Though They Had Criminal Records And Had Committed Crimes, They Sued Me! More Often Than Not, The Insurance Company That Protects You Against This Type Of Lawsuit Will Settle It With Cash And Contest It In A Court Of Law.

A Movie Is Like A Tip Of An Iceberg, In A Way, Because So Little Of What You Do In Connection With Making A Movie Actually Gets Into The Movie. Almost Everything Gets Left Behind.

I've Done Interviews In One Day That Went On For Fifteen, Sixteen Hours. And At A Certain Point, The Control Over What They're Saying Breaks Down; It Becomes Different. It Becomes Really Powerful, And For Me, Real. It Becomes Out Of Control.

Photographs Attract False Beliefs The Way Flypaper Attracts Flies.

Listening To What People Were Saying Wasn't Even Important. But It Was Important To Look As If You Were Listening To What People Were Saying. Actually, Listening To What People Are Saying, To Me, Interferes With Looking As If You Were Listening To What People Are Saying.

The Chance That Any Given Sentence Is A Lie, Rather Than A Truth, I Think, Is Fairly Great. An Intentional Lie, A Self-deception, A Misconception - There Are Lots Of Categories Of Untruth, Not One Grab Bag. And Hotographs Can Reveal Something To Us, And They Can Also Conceal Things.

This Uses A Lens System, Which I Have Used For Years In Various Different Ways, But I've Never Used It In The Context Of An Interview. This Is The Very First Time That I've Done That. It's A Lens Called The Revolution, So It Allowed Me To Interview Elsa [dorfman] And Actually Operate The Camera. Well One Of The Cameras, Because There Were Four Cameras There.

Truth Exists Independent Of Style. It Involves All Kinds Of Issues. Properly Considered, It's A Quest, A Pursuit. To Say That Vérité Is More Truthful Than Something That Is Narrated Is Just Misplaced. Completely Wrong. And The Fact That People Still Talk About It As Though They're Really Talking About Something... It Puzzles Me Greatly. A Moment Of Reflection About It Tells You That It Makes No Sense!

Tell Me What's Wrong With This Idea: If You're Selling To Somebody, Find Someone Like That Person To Sell To Them. If You're Trying To Reach Swing Voters, If You're Trying To Reach People On The Fence, If You're Trying To Reach Republicans Who Are Unsure About This Candidate... Get People Who Switched! Get People Who Are Registered Republicans. Get People Who Were George Bush Voters Who Can't Bring Themselves To Do It Again. Talk To Them, Get Them To Explain What Their Reasons Are, And Show Them To People. What's Wrong With This Idea?!

I Used To Say That Interviewing Others Was Perhaps The Way I Could Stop Talking And Start Listening. It's A Kind Of Enforced Silence.

I Like To Point Out That People Very Often Confuse The Idea That Truth Is Subjective With The Fact That Truth Is Perishable.

I Used To Work As A Private Detective Years And Years Ago. And My Boss Gave Me This One Very Simple Piece Of Advice About Trying To Figure Out Who To Interview First In Any Investigation. His Recommendation: Always Pick The People Who Were Fired. Pick The People Who Are Pissed Off.

But There Is A Tabloid Newspaper Within The New York Times Very, Very Often.

People Think In Narratives - In Beginnings, Middles And Ends. The Danger When You Edit Something Too Severely Is That It No Longer Makes Sense; Worse Still, It Leaves People With The Disquieting Impression That Something Is Being Hidden.

You Know, Anything More Negative, Anything More Disparaging, Anything More Adversarial Than What [donald Trump] Does Already. The Mystery Is How He's Gotten As Far As He's Gotten.
