When You Put On A Uniform, There Are Certain Inhibitions That You Accept.

The Hope Of The World Is That Wisdom Can Arrest Conflict Between Brothers. I Believe That War Is The Deadly Harvest Of Arrogant And Unreasoning Minds. And I Find Grounds For This Belief In The Wisdom Literature Of Proverbs. It Says In Effect This: Panic Strikes Like A Storm And Calamity Comes Like A Whirlwind To Those Who Hate Knowledge And Ignore Their God.

Beware The Influence Of The Military-industrial Complex.

Because, Therefore, We Are Defending A Way Of Life, We Must Be Respectful Of That Way Of Life As We Proceed To The Solution Of Our Problem. We Must Not Violate Its Principles And Its Precepts, And We Must Not Destroy From Within What We Are Trying To Defend From Without.

Every Gun That Is Made, Every Warship Launched, Every Rocket Fired, Signifies In The Final Sense A Theft From Those Who Hunger And Are Not Fed, Those Who Are Cold And Are Not Clothed.

You Did Not Tell Me What You Are Doing Athletically Just Now But I Do Hope That If Your Arm Comes Along Next Spring You Can Get It In Good Shape To Try Out For The Pitching Spot On The Varsity. We Have Got To Fight It [communism] With Something Better, Not Try To Conceal The Thinking Of Our Own People. They Are Part Of America. And Even If They Think Ideas That Are Contrary To Ours, Their Right To Say Them, Their Right To Record Them, And Their Right To Have Them At Places Where They Are Accessible To Others Is Unquestioned, Or It Isn't America.

One Of The Things That I Noticed In War Was How Difficult It Was For Our Soldiers, At First, To Realize That There Are No Rules To War. Our Men Were Raised In Sports, Where A Referee Runs A Football Game, Or An Umpire A Baseball Game, And So Forth.

We Seek Peace, Knowing That Peace Is The Climate Of Freedom. And Now, As In No Other Age, We Seek It Because We Have Been Warned, By The Power Of Modern Weapons, That Peace May Be The Only Climate Possible For Human Life Itself.

Preparing For Battle, Plans Were Essential. But Once The Battle Was Joined, Plans Were Useless.

Freedom Bestows On Us The Priceless Gift Of Opportunity - If We Neglect Our Opportunities We Shall Certainly Lose Our Freedom.

Well, A Funny Thing, There Are Three That I Like All For The Same Reason, Golf, Fishing, And Shooting, And I Do Because First, They Take You Into The Fields. There Is Mild Exercise, The Kind That An Older Individual Probably Should Have. And On Top Of It, It Induces You To Take At Any One Time 2 Or 3 Hours, If You Can, Where You Are Thinking Of The Bird Or That Ball Or The Wily Trout. Now, To My Mind It Is A Very Healthful, Beneficial Kind Of Thing, And I Do It Whenever I Get A Chance, As You Well Know.

They [the Founders] Proclaimed To All The World The Revolutionary Doctrine Of The Divine Rights Of The Common Man. That Doctrine Has Ever Since Been The Heart Of The American Faith.

The Proper Role Of Government, However, Is That Of Partner With The Farmer -- Never His Master. By Every Possible Means We Must Develop And Promote That Partnership -- To The End That Agriculture May Continue To Be A Sound, Enduring Foundation For Our Economy And That Farm Living May Be A Profitable And Satisfying Experience.

War Is A Grim, Cruel Business, A Business Justified Only As A Means Of Sustaining The Forces Of Good Against Those Of Evil.

I Had Been Conscious A Feeling Of Depression And So I Voiced To [secretary Of War Stimson] My Grave Misgivings, First On The Basis Of My Belief That Japan Was Already Defeated And That Dropping The Bomb Was Completely Unnecessary, And Secondly Because I Thought That Our Country Should Avoid Shocking World Opinion By The Use Of A Weapon Whose Employment Was, I Thought, No Longer Mandatory As A Measure To Save American Lives. It Was My Belief That Japan Was, At This Very Moment, Seeking A Way To Surrender With A Minimum Loss Of 'face.'

Freedom From Fear And Injustice And Oppression Will Be Ours Only In The Measure That Men Who Value Such Freedom Are Ready To Sustain Its Possession - To Defend It Against Every Thrust From Within Or Without.

A Preventive War, To My Mind, Is An Impossibility Today. But I Believe This: By And Large, The United States Ought To Be Able To Choose For Its President Anybody That It Wants, Regardless Of The Number Of Terms He Has Served. That Is What I Believe. Now, Some People Have Said, "you Let Him Get Enough Power And This Will Lead Toward A One-party Government." That, I Don't Believe. I Have Got The Utmost Faith In The Long-term Common Sense Of The American People. Therefore, I Don't Think There Should Be Any Inhibitions Other Than Those That Were In The 35-year Age Limit And So On. I Think That Was Enough, Myself.

Compromise Is Like The Middle Of The Road; Always Safer To Walk On Than The Edges.

There's No Tragedy In Life Like The Death Of A Child. Things Never Get Back To The Way They Were.

Well, It's Hard For A Mere Man To Believe That Woman Doesn't Have Equal Rights.

The Clearest Way To Show What The Rule Of Law Means To Us In Everyday Life Is To Recall What Has Happened When There Is No Rule Of Law.

From Behind The Iron Curtain, There Are Signs That Tyranny Is In Trouble And Reminders That Its Structure Is As Brittle As Its Surface Is Hard.

We Have The Disgrace Of Racial Discrimination, Or We Have Prejudice Against People Because Of Their Religion. We Have Not Had The Courage To Uproot These Things, Although We Know They Are Wrong.

Why Are We Proud? We Are Proud, First Of All, Because From The Beginning Of This Nation, A Man Can Walk Upright, No Matter Who He Is, Or Who She Is. He Can Walk Upright And Meet His Friend - Or His Enemy; And He Does Not Fear That Because That Enemy May Be In A Position Of Great Power That He Can Be Suddenly Thrown In Jail To Rot There Without Charges And With No Recourse To Justice. We Have The Habeas Corpus Act, And We Respect It.

The System Is Not Intended As A Substitute For Private Savings, Pension Plans, And Insurance Protection. It Is, Rather, Intended As The Foundation Upon Which These Other Forms Of Protection Can Be Soundly Built. Thus, The Individual's Own Work, His Planning And His Thrift Will Bring Him A Higher Standard Of Living Upon His Retirement, Or His Family A Higher Standard Of Living In The Event Of His Death, Than Would Otherwise Be The Case. Hence The System Both Encourages Thrift And Self-reliance, And Helps To Prevent Destitution In Our National Life.

The Purpose Is Clear. It Is Safety With Solvency. The Country Is Entitled To Both.

In The Final Choice A Soldier's Pack Is Not So Heavy As A Prisoner's Chains.
