Disabled Children Are Equally Entitled To An Exciting And Brilliant Future.

No One In My Family Had Ever Attended School [...] On The First Day Of School My Teacher, Miss Mdingane, Gave Each Of Us An English Name. This Was The Custom Among Africans In Those Days And Was Undoubtedly Due To The British Bias Of Our Education. That Day, Miss Mdingane Told Me That My New Name Was Nelson. Why This Particular Name I Have No Idea.

I Am Sure That If Somebody Is Giving A Sum To Charity, He Or She Should Be Encouraged To Do So By The Authorities Because The Spirit In Which We Encourage People To Give Has Permeated Our Society.

We Speak Here Of The Challenge Of The Dichotomies Of War And Peace, Violence And Non-violence, Racism And Human Dignity, Oppression And Repression And Liberty And Human Rights, Poverty And Freedom From Want.

That Was One Of The Things That Worried Me – To Be Raised To The Position Of A Semi-god – Because Then You Are No Longer A Human Being. I Wanted To Be Known As Mandela, A Man With Weaknesses, Some Of Which Are Fundamental, And A Man Who Is Committed, But Never The Less, Sometimes He Fails To Live Up To Expectations.

Aids Is Our Number One Enemy. This Enemy Can Be Defeated. While The Research For A Cure Continues, Four Principles -- Love, Support, Acceptance And Care For Those Affected -- Can Make Us Winners.

If You Want To Change The World, Help The Women.

If There Are Dreams About A Beautiful South Africa, There Are Also Roads That Lead To Their Goal. Two Of These Roads Could Be Named Goodness And Forgiveness.

The Private Sector Granted Bursaries [scholarships] For The Children Of Their Workers. Some Of Them Built Homes For Their Workers. They Had In-service Training, Which Improved The Skills Of Their Workers. So That Spirit Was There. All We Did Was Merely Exploit It.

People Respond In Accordance To How You Relate To Them. If You Approach Them On The Basis Of Violence, That's How They'll React. But If You Say, 'we Want Peace, We Want Stability,' We Can Then Do A Lot Of Things That Will Contribute Towards The Progress Of Our Society.

South Africa Is The Most Beautiful Place On Earth. Admittedly, I Am Biased But When You Combine The Natural Beauty... And The Fact That The Region Is A Haven For Africa's Most Splendid Wildlife... Then I Think That We Have Been Blessed With A Truly Wonderful Land.

I Realized That They Could Take Everything From Me Except My Mind And My Heart. They Could Not Take Those Things. Those Things I Still Had Control Over. And I Decided Not To Give Them Away.

Racism Is A Blight On The Human Conscience. The Idea That Any People Can Be Inferior To Another, To The Point Where Those Who Consider Themselves Superior Define And Treat The Rest As Subhuman, Denies The Humanity Even Of Those Who Elevate Themselves To The Status Of Gods.

The Calm And Tolerant Atmosphere That Prevailed During The Elections Depicts The Type Of South Africa We Can Build. It Set The Tone For The Future. We Might Have Our Differences, But We Are One People With A Common Destiny In Our Rich Variety Of Culture, Race And Tradition.

Prison Life, Fortunately, I Spent A Lot Of Years, About 18 Years With Other Prisoners, And, As I Say, They Enriched Your Soul.

We Need A Fundamental Change Of Mindset With Regards To The Way We Speak And Behave About Sex And Sexuality. Boys And Men Have A Particularly Critical Role In This Regard, Changing The Chauvinist And Demeaning Ways Sexuality And Women Were Traditionally Dealt With In Both Our Actions And Speaking.

We Understand And Promote The Notion That While Children Need To Be Guided They Also Have An Entrenched Right To Be Whatever They Want To Be And That They Can Achieve This Only If They Are Given The Space To Dream And Live Out Their Dreams.

Only 50 Years Ago Persons With Intellectual Disabilities Were Scorned, Isolated And Neglected. Today, They Are Able To Attend School, Become Employed And Assimilate Into Their Local Community.

Aids Today In Africa Is Claiming More Lives Than The Sum Total Of All Wars, Famines And Floods And The Ravages Of Such Deadly Diseases As Malaria ... We Must Act Now For The Sake Of The World.

An Organisation Can Only Carry Out Its Mandate If There Is Discipline, And Where There Is No Discipline There Can Be No Real Progress

South Africans Must Recall The Terrible Past So That We Can Deal With It, Forgiving Where Forgiveness Is Necessary But Never Forgetting.

Like All Xhosa Children, I Acquired Knowledge Mainly Through Observation. We Were Meant To Learn Through Imitation And Emulation, Not Through Questions. When I First Visited The Homes Of Whites, I Was Often Dumbfounded By The Number And Nature Of Questions That Children Asked Of Their Parents-and Their Parents' Unfailing Willingness To Answer Them. In My Household, Questions Were Considered A Nuisance; Adults Imparted Information As They Considered Necessary.

Those South Africans Who Berate Me For Being Loyal To Our Friends, Literally They Can Go And Throw Themselves Into A Pool. I Am Not Going To Betray The Trust Of Those Who Helped Us.

We Can't Fight Aids Unless We Do Much More To Fight Tb As Well.

Our Children Are The Rock On Which Our Future Will Be Built, Our Greatest Asset As A Nation

What He Means By This Is That Instead Of Saying You'll "try", You Need To "do". And As We Let Our Light Shine, We Unconsciously Give Other People Permission To Do The Same. As We Are Liberated From Our Own Fear, Our Presence Automatically Liberates Others.

Overcoming Poverty Is Not A Gesture Of Charity. It Is An Act Of Justice. It Is The Protection Of A Fundamental Human Right, The Right To Dignity And A Decent Life . . .

We Now Undertake That We Cannot Rest While Millions Of Our People Suffer The Pain And Indignity Of Poverty In All Its Forms.

It Generally Appears Outlandish Until Its Carried Out.

As I Walked Out The Door Toward The Gate That Would Lead To My Freedom, I Knew If I Didn't Leave My Bitterness And Hatred Behind, I'd Still Be In Prison.

I Told My Cellmates About The Oppression Of The Whites And Apartheid. I Helped Organize Hunger Strikes And The Like In My Prison.

In All Disputes, A Point Is Arrived At Where No Party, No Matter How Right Or Wrong It Might Have Been At The Start Of That Dispute, Will Any Longer Be Totally In The Right Or Totally In The Wrong. Such A Point I Believe, Has Been Reached In This Debate... Let Us Not Equivocate. A Tragedy Of Unprecedented Proportions Is Unfolding In Africa.

Running Taught Me Valuable Lessons. In Cross-country Competition, Training Counted More Than Intrinsic Ability, And I Could Compensate For A Lack Of Natural Aptitude With Diligence And Discipline. I Applied This In Everything I Did.

I Regard It As A Duty Which I Owed, Not Just To My People, But Also To My Profession, To The Practice Of Law, And To The Justice For All Mankind, To Cry Out Against This Discrimination Which Is Essentially Unjust And Opposed To The Whole Basis Of The Attitude Towards Justice Which Is Part Of The Tradition Of Legal Training In This Country. I Do Not Deny That I Planned Sabotage. I Did Not Plan It In A Spirit Of Recklessness Nor Because I Have Any Love Of Violence. I Planned It As A Result Of A Calm And Sober Assessment Of The Political Situation That Had Arisen After Many Years Of Tyranny, Exploitation And Oppression Of My People By The Whites.

To Deny People Of Their Human Rights Is To Challenge Their Very Humanity. To Impose On Them A Wretched Life Of Huger And Deprivation Is To Dehumanize Them. But Such Has Been The Terrible Fate Of All Black Persons In Our Country Under The System Of Apartheid.

If There Is A Country That Has Committed Unspeakable Atrocities In The World, It Is The United States Of America. They Don't Care For Human Beings.... What I Am Condemning Is That One Power, With A President [george W. Bush] Who Has No Foresight, Who Cannot Think Properly, Is Now Wanting To Plunge The World Into A Holocaust.

We Understand It Still That There Is No Easy Road To Freedom. We Know It Well That None Of Us Acting Alone Can Achieve Success.
